Chapter 40

The Man with a Measuring Rod

1

In the twenty-fifth… year of our exile, at the beginning of the year, on the tenth day of the month— in the fourteenth… year after Jerusalem had been struck down— on that very day the hand of the LORD was upon me, and He took me there.

𐤁𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤇𐤌𐤔 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤂𐤋𐤅𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤓𐤀𐤔 𐤄𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤓 𐤋𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤇𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤄𐤊𐤕𐤄 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤁𐤏𐤑𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤉𐤃 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤄

בְּעֶשְׂרִ֣ים וְחָמֵ֣שׁ שָׁנָ֣ה לְ֠גָלוּתֵנוּ בְּרֹ֨אשׁ הַשָּׁנָ֜ה בֶּעָשׂ֣וֹר לַחֹ֗דֶשׁ בְּאַרְבַּ֤ע עֶשְׂרֵה֙ שָׁנָ֔ה אַחַ֕ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָעִ֑יר הֻכְּתָ֖ה הַזֶּ֗ה בְּעֶ֣צֶם׀ הַיּ֣וֹם יַד־ יְהוָ֔ה הָיְתָ֤ה עָלַי֙ וַיָּבֵ֥א אֹתִ֖י שָֽׁמָּה׃ bə·‘eś·rîm wə·ḥā·mêš šā·nāh lə·ḡā·lū·ṯê·nū bə·rōš haš·šā·nāh be·‘ā·śō·wr la·ḥō·ḏeš bə·’ar·ba‘ ‘eś·rêh šā·nāh ’a·ḥar ’ă·šer hā·‘îr huk·kə·ṯāh haz·zeh bə·‘e·ṣem hay·yō·wm yaḏ- Yah·weh hā·yə·ṯāh ‘ā·lay way·yā·ḇê ’ō·ṯî šām·māhWLC · 1

In visions of God He took me to the land of Israel and set me on a very… high mountain, on whose southern slope was a structure that resembled a city.

בְּמַרְא֣וֹת אֱלֹהִ֔ים הֱבִיאַ֖נִי אֶל־ אֶ֣רֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיְנִיחֵ֗נִי אֶל־ מְאֹ֔ד וְעָלָ֥יו גָּבֹ֙הַּ֙ הַ֤ר מִנֶּֽגֶב׃ כְּמִבְנֵה־ עִ֖יר bə·mar·’ō·wṯ ’ĕ·lō·hîm hĕ·ḇî·’a·nî ’el- ’e·reṣ yiś·rā·’êl way·nî·ḥê·nî ’el- mə·’ōḏ wə·‘ā·lāw gā·ḇō·ah har min·ne·ḡeḇ kə·miḇ·nêh- ‘îrWLC · 2

So He took me there, and I saw a man whose appearance… was like bronze. He was standing in the gateway with a linen cord and a measuring rod in his hand.

𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤄𐤅 𐤊𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤍𐤇𐤔𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤁𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤐𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤐𐤕𐤉𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤅

וַיָּבֵ֨יא אוֹתִ֜י שָׁ֗מָּה וְהִנֵּה־ אִישׁ֙ מַרְאֵ֙הוּ֙ כְּמַרְאֵ֣ה נְחֹ֔שֶׁת וְה֥וּא עֹמֵ֖ד בַּשָּֽׁעַר׃ פִּשְׁתִּ֥ים וּפְתִיל־ הַמִּדָּ֑ה וּקְנֵ֣ה בְּיָד֖וֹ way·yā·ḇê ’ō·w·ṯî šām·māh wə·hin·nêh- ’îš mar·’ê·hū kə·mar·’êh nə·ḥō·šeṯ wə·hū ‘ō·mêḏ baš·šā·‘ar piš·tîm ū·p̄ə·ṯîl- ham·mid·dāh ū·qə·nêh bə·yā·ḏōwWLC · 3

“Son of man,” he said to me…, “look with your eyes, hear with your ears, and pay attention… to everything I am going to show you, for that [is why] you have been brought here. Report to the house of Israel everything you see.”

בֶּן־ אָדָ֡ם וַיְדַבֵּ֨ר אֵלַ֜י הָאִ֗ישׁ רְאֵ֣ה בְעֵינֶיךָ֩ שְּׁמָ֜ע וּבְאָזְנֶ֨יךָ וְשִׂ֣ים לִבְּךָ֗ לְכֹ֤ל אֲשֶׁר־ אֲנִי֙ מַרְאֶ֣ה אוֹתָ֔ךְ כִּ֛י לְמַ֥עַן הַרְאוֹתְכָ֖ה הֻבָ֣אתָה הֵ֑נָּה הַגֵּ֛ד אֶת־ לְבֵ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ כָּל־ אֲשֶׁר־ אַתָּ֥ה רֹאֶ֖ה ben- ’ā·ḏām way·ḏab·bêr ’ê·lay hā·’îš rə·’êh ḇə·‘ê·ne·ḵā šə·mā‘ ū·ḇə·’ā·zə·ne·ḵā wə·śîm lib·bə·ḵā lə·ḵōl ’ă·šer- ’ă·nî mar·’eh ’ō·w·ṯāḵ kî lə·ma·‘an har·’ō·wṯ·ḵāh hu·ḇā·ṯāh hên·nāh hag·gêḏ ’eṯ- lə·ḇêṯ yiś·rā·’êl kāl- ’ă·šer- ’at·tāh rō·’ehWLC · 4

The East Gate

And I saw a wall surrounding… vvv the temple area. Now the length of the measuring rod in the man’s hand [was] six [long] cubits ([each measuring a] cubit and a handbreadth), and he measured the [wall to be] one rod thick [and] one rod high.

𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤇𐤅𐤌𐤄 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤌𐤇𐤅𐤑 𐤋𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤃𐤄 𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤔𐤔 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤀𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤈𐤐𐤇 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤍 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤓𐤇𐤁 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤒𐤅𐤌𐤄

וְהִנֵּ֥ה חוֹמָ֛ה סָבִ֣יב׀ סָבִ֑יב מִח֥וּץ לַבַּ֖יִת הַמִּדָּ֗ה קְנֵ֣ה הָאִ֜ישׁ וּבְיַ֨ד שֵׁשׁ־ אַמּ֤וֹת בָּֽאַמָּה֙ וָטֹ֔פַח וַיָּ֜מָד אֶת־ הַבִּנְיָן֙ אֶחָ֔ד קָנֶ֣ה רֹ֤חַב אֶחָֽד׃ קָנֶ֥ה וְקוֹמָ֖ה wə·hin·nêh ḥō·w·māh sā·ḇîḇ sā·ḇîḇ mi·ḥūṣ lab·ba·yiṯ ham·mid·dāh qə·nêh hā·’îš ū·ḇə·yaḏ šêš- ’am·mō·wṯ bā·’am·māh wā·ṭō·p̄aḥ way·yā·māḏ ’eṯ- hab·bin·yān ’e·ḥāḏ qā·neh rō·ḥaḇ ’e·ḥāḏ qā·neh wə·qō·w·māhWLC · 5

Then he came to the gate vvv facing… east and climbed its steps. He measured the threshold of the gate [to be] one rod deep -…

𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤄𐤒𐤃𐤉𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤎𐤐 𐤄𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤓𐤇𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤎𐤐 𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤓𐤇𐤁

וַיָּב֗וֹא אֶל־ שַׁ֙עַר֙ אֲשֶׁ֤ר פָּנָיו֙ דֶּ֣רֶךְ הַקָּדִ֔ימָה וַיַּ֖עַל בְּמַעֲלוֹתוֹ וַיָּ֣מָד׀ אֶת־ סַ֣ף הַשַּׁ֗עַר אֶחָד֙ קָנֶ֤ה רֹ֔חַב וְאֵת֙ אֶחָ֔ד סַ֣ף קָנֶ֥ה אֶחָ֖ד רֹֽחַב׃ way·yā·ḇō·w ’el- ša·‘ar ’ă·šer pā·nāw de·reḵ haq·qā·ḏî·māh way·ya·‘al bə·ma·ʿă·lō·ṯō way·yā·māḏ ’eṯ- sap̄ haš·ša·‘ar ’e·ḥāḏ qā·neh rō·ḥaḇ wə·’êṯ ’e·ḥāḏ sap̄ qā·neh ’e·ḥāḏ rō·ḥaḇWLC · 6

Each gate chamber [was] one rod long and one [rod]… wide, and [there were] five cubits between the gate chambers. The inner threshold of the gate by the portico… facing inward [was] one rod [deep].

𐤅𐤄𐤕𐤀 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤓𐤊 𐤅𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤓𐤇𐤁 𐤇𐤌𐤔 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤕𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤎𐤐 𐤄𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤌𐤀𐤑𐤋 𐤀𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤌𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤒𐤍𐤄

וְהַתָּ֗א אֶחָ֥ד קָנֶ֨ה אֹ֙רֶךְ֙ וְקָנֶ֤ה אֶחָד֙ רֹ֔חַב חָמֵ֣שׁ אַמּ֑וֹת וּבֵ֥ין הַתָּאִ֖ים וְסַ֣ף הַ֠שַּׁעַר מֵאֵ֨צֶל אוּלָ֥ם הַשַּׁ֛עַר מֵֽהַבַּ֖יִת אֶחָֽד׃ קָנֶ֥ה wə·hat·tā ’e·ḥāḏ qā·neh ’ō·reḵ wə·qā·neh ’e·ḥāḏ rō·ḥaḇ ḥā·mêš ’am·mō·wṯ ū·ḇên hat·tā·’îm wə·sap̄ haš·ša·‘ar mê·’ê·ṣel ’ū·lām haš·ša·‘ar mê·hab·ba·yiṯ ’e·ḥāḏ qā·nehWLC · 7

Then he measured the portico of the gateway inside

𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤌𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤇𐤃

וַיָּ֜מָד אֶת־ אֻלָ֥ם הַשַּׁ֛עַר מֵהַבַּ֖יִת קָנֶ֥ה אֶחָֽד׃ way·yā·māḏ ’eṯ- ’u·lām haš·ša·‘ar mê·hab·ba·yiṯ qā·neh ’e·ḥāḏWLC · 8

[it was] - eight cubits [deep], and its jambs [were] two cubits [thick]. And the portico of the gateway faced [the temple].

𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤔𐤌𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤋𐤅 𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤌𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕

וַיָּ֜מָד אֶת־ אֻלָ֤ם הַשַּׁ֙עַר֙ שְׁמֹנֶ֣ה אַמּ֔וֹת וְאֵילוֹ שְׁתַּ֣יִם אַמּ֑וֹת וְאֻלָ֥ם הַשַּׁ֖עַר מֵהַבָּֽיִת׃ way·yā·māḏ ’eṯ- ’u·lām haš·ša·‘ar šə·mō·neh ’am·mō·wṯ wə·ʾē·lō šə·ta·yim ’am·mō·wṯ wə·’u·lām haš·ša·‘ar mê·hab·bā·yiṯWLC · 9

There were three gate chambers on each side… of the east gate,… each with the same… measurements, and the gateposts on either side… also had the same measurements.

𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤉 𐤌𐤐𐤄 𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤄 𐤌𐤐𐤄 𐤄𐤒𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤋𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤃𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤋𐤌 𐤌𐤐𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤐𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤅𐤌𐤃𐤄

שְׁלֹשָׁ֤ה וְתָאֵ֨י מִפֹּה֙ וּשְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה מִפֹּ֔ה הַקָּדִ֗ים הַשַּׁ֜עַר דֶּ֣רֶךְ אַחַ֖ת לִשְׁלָשְׁתָּ֑ם מִדָּ֥ה לָאֵילִ֖ם מִפֹּ֥ה וּמִפּֽוֹ׃ אַחַ֛ת וּמִדָּ֥ה šə·lō·šāh wə·ṯā·’ê mip·pōh ū·šə·lō·šāh mip·pōh haq·qā·ḏîm haš·ša·‘ar de·reḵ ’a·ḥaṯ liš·lā·šə·tām mid·dāh lā·’ê·lim mip·pōh ū·mip·pōw ’a·ḥaṯ ū·mid·dāhWLC · 10

And he measured the width of the gateway entrance [to be] ten cubits, and its length… [was] thirteen… cubits.

𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤓𐤇𐤁 𐤄𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤏𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤊 𐤄𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤔 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤕

וַיָּ֛מָד אֶת־ רֹ֥חַב הַשַּׁ֖עַר פֶּֽתַח־ עֶ֣שֶׂר אַמּ֑וֹת אֹ֣רֶךְ הַשַּׁ֔עַר שְׁל֥וֹשׁ עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה אַמּֽוֹת׃ way·yā·māḏ ’eṯ- rō·ḥaḇ haš·ša·‘ar pe·ṯaḥ- ‘e·śer ’am·mō·wṯ ’ō·reḵ haš·ša·‘ar šə·lō·wōš ‘eś·rêh ’am·mō·wṯWLC · 11

In front of each gate chamber was a wall one cubit [high], and the gate chambers [were] six vvv cubits… square.

𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤕𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤋 𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤀𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤕𐤀 𐤔𐤔 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤋 𐤌𐤐𐤄 𐤌𐤐𐤅 𐤅𐤔𐤔 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤐𐤅

לִפְנֵ֤י הַתָּאוֹת֙ וּגְב֞וּל אֶחָ֔ת אַמָּ֣ה וְהַתָּ֕א שֵׁשׁ־ אַמּ֣וֹת וְאַמָּה־ אַחַ֥ת גְּב֖וּל מִפֹּ֑ה מִפּ֔וֹ וְשֵׁ֥שׁ אַמּ֖וֹת מִפּֽוֹ׃ lip̄·nê hat·tā·’ō·wṯ ū·ḡə·ḇūl ’e·ḥāṯ ’am·māh wə·hat·tā šêš- ’am·mō·wṯ wə·’am·māh- ’a·ḥaṯ gə·ḇūl mip·pōh mip·pōw wə·šêš ’am·mō·wṯ mip·pōwWLC · 12

Then he measured the gateway from the roof of [one] gate chamber to the roof of the opposite one; [the distance was] twenty-five… cubits from doorway to doorway.

𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤌𐤂𐤂 𐤄𐤕𐤀 𐤋𐤂𐤂𐤅 𐤓𐤇𐤁 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤇𐤌𐤔 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤍𐤂𐤃 𐤐𐤕𐤇

וַיָּ֣מָד אֶת־ הַשַּׁ֗עַר מִגַּ֤ג הַתָּא֙ לְגַגּ֔וֹ רֹ֕חַב עֶשְׂרִ֥ים וְחָמֵ֖שׁ אַמּ֑וֹת פֶּ֖תַח נֶ֥גֶד פָּֽתַח׃ way·yā·māḏ ’eṯ- haš·ša·‘ar mig·gaḡ hat·tā lə·ḡag·gōw rō·ḥaḇ ‘eś·rîm wə·ḥā·mêš ’am·mō·wṯ pe·ṯaḥ ne·ḡeḏ pā·ṯaḥWLC · 13

Next he measured the gateposts [to be] sixty cubits [high]. The gateway [extended] vvv around to the gatepost of the courtyard.

𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤉𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤉𐤋 𐤄𐤇𐤑𐤓

וַיַּ֥עַשׂ אֶת־ אֵילִ֖ים שִׁשִּׁ֣ים אַמָּ֑ה הַשַּׁ֖עַר סָבִ֥יב׀ סָבִֽיב׃ וְאֶל־ אֵיל֙ הֶֽחָצֵ֔ר way·ya·‘aś ’eṯ- ’ê·lîm šiš·šîm ’am·māh haš·ša·‘ar sā·ḇîḇ sā·ḇîḇ wə·’el- ’êl he·ḥā·ṣêrWLC · 14

And the distance from vvv the entrance of the gateway to the far end of [its] inner portico [was] fifty cubits.

𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤀𐤕𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤄𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤌 𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤄

וְעַ֗ל פְּנֵי֙ הַיֹּאתוֹן הַשַּׁ֣עַר עַל־ לִפְנֵ֕י הַשַּׁ֖עַר הַפְּנִימִ֑י אֻלָ֥ם חֲמִשִּׁ֖ים אַמָּֽה׃ wə·‘al pə·nê hay·yō·ṯōn haš·ša·‘ar ‘al- lip̄·nê haš·ša·‘ar hap·pə·nî·mî ’u·lām ḥă·miš·šîm ’am·māhWLC · 15

The gate chambers… and their side pillars had beveled windows all around… the inside of the gateway. The porticos also had windows all around… on the inside… Each side pillar was decorated with palm trees.

The Outer Court

Then he brought me into the outer court, and there were chambers and a pavement laid out all around… the court. Thirty chambers faced the pavement,

which flanked the gateways and corresponded to the length of the gates;… this was the lower pavement -.

Then he measured the distance from the front of the lower gateway to the outside of the inner court; it was a hundred cubits on the east side as well as on the north.

The North Gate

He also measured the length and width of the gateway of the outer court facing… north.

Its three gate chambers on each side,… its side pillars, and its portico all had the same measurements as the first gate: fifty cubits long vvv and twenty-five cubits wide.

Its windows, portico, and palm trees had the same measurements as those of the gate facing… east. Seven steps led up to it, with its portico opposite them.

There was a gate to the inner court facing the north gate, just as there was on the east. He measured the distance from gateway to gateway [to be] a hundred cubits.

The South Gate

Then he led me to the south side, and I saw a gateway facing south. He measured its side pillars and portico, and they had the same measurements as the others.

Both the gateway and its portico had windows all around…, like the other windows. [It was] fifty cubits long vvv and twenty-five cubits wide.

Seven steps led up to it, and its portico was opposite them; it had palm trees on its side pillars, one on each side…

The inner court also had a gate facing south, and he measured [the distance] from gateway to gateway toward the south [to be] a hundred cubits.

Next he brought me into the inner court through the south gate, and he measured the south gate; it had the same measurements as the others.

(The porticoes vvv around [the inner court] [were] twenty-five… cubits long and five cubits deep.

Its portico faced the outer court, and its side pillars were decorated with palm trees… on each side… Eight steps led up to it.

Then he brought me to the north gate and measured [it]. It had the same measurements as the others,

as did its gate chambers, side pillars, and portico. It also had windows all around… [It was] fifty cubits long and twenty-five… cubits wide.

There was a chamber with a doorway by the portico in each of the inner gateways. There the burnt offering was to be washed -.

וְלִשְׁכָּ֣ה וּפִתְחָ֔הּ בְּאֵילִ֖ים הַשְּׁעָרִ֑ים שָׁ֖ם הָעֹלָֽה׃ יָדִ֥יחוּ אֶת־ wə·liš·kāh ū·p̄iṯ·ḥāh bə·’ê·lîm haš·šə·‘ā·rîm šām hā·‘ō·lāh yā·ḏî·ḥū ’eṯ-WLC · 38

Inside the portico of the gateway [were] two tables on each side,… on which the burnt offerings, sin offerings, and guilt offerings were to be slaughtered.

Outside, as one goes up to the entrance of the north gateway, there were two tables on one side and two more tables on the other side of the gate’s portico.

So there were four tables inside the gateway and four outside eight tables in all— on which the sacrifices were to be slaughtered.

There were also four tables of dressed stone… for the burnt offering, each a cubit and a half long, a cubit and a half wide, and a cubit high. On these were placed the utensils used to slaughter the burnt offerings and the other sacrifices.

The double-pronged hooks, each a handbreadth [long], were fastened all around… the inside of the room, and the flesh of the offering was to be placed on the tables.

Chambers for Ministry

Outside the inner gate, within the inner court, were two chambers [one] beside… the north gate and facing… south, and another beside… the south gate… and facing… north.

Then the man said to me: “The chamber that faces… south is for the priests who keep charge of the temple,

וַיְדַבֵּ֖ר אֵלָ֑י זֹ֣ה הַלִּשְׁכָּ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר פָּנֶ֙יהָ֙ דֶּ֣רֶךְ הַדָּר֔וֹם לַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים שֹׁמְרֵ֖י מִשְׁמֶ֥רֶת הַבָּֽיִת׃ way·ḏab·bêr ’ê·lāy zōh hal·liš·kāh ’ă·šer pā·ne·hā de·reḵ had·dā·rō·wm lak·kō·hă·nîm šō·mə·rê miš·me·reṯ hab·bā·yiṯWLC · 45

and the chamber that faces… north is for the priests who keep charge of the altar. These are the sons of Zadok, vvv the [only] Levites… who may approach the LORD to minister before Him.”

The Inner Court

Next he measured the court. It was square, a hundred cubits long and a hundred cubits wide. And the altar [was] in front of the temple.

Then he brought me to the portico of the temple and measured the side pillars of the portico [to be] five cubits on each side. The width of the gateway was [fourteen cubits and its sidewalls were] three cubits on either side…

The portico [was] twenty cubits wide and twelve… cubits deep, and [ten] steps led up to it. There were columns by the side pillars, one on each side…
