Chapter 38
A Prophecy against Gog
1
And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“Son of man, set your face against Gog of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. Prophesy against him
𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤂𐤅𐤂 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤄𐤌𐤂𐤅𐤂 𐤓𐤀𐤔 𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤀 𐤌𐤔𐤊 𐤅𐤕𐤁𐤋 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅
בֶּן־ אָדָ֗ם שִׂ֤ים פָּנֶ֙יךָ֙ אֶל־ גּוֹג֙ אֶ֣רֶץ הַמָּג֔וֹג רֹ֖אשׁ נְשִׂ֕יא מֶ֣שֶׁךְ וְתֻבָ֑ל וְהִנָּבֵ֖א עָלָֽיו׃ ben- ’ā·ḏām śîm pā·ne·ḵā ’el- gō·wḡ ’e·reṣ ham·mā·ḡō·wḡ rōš nə·śî me·šeḵ wə·ṯu·ḇāl wə·hin·nā·ḇê ‘ā·lāw — WLC · 2

and declare that this is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, I am against you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal.
𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤂𐤅𐤂 𐤓𐤀𐤔 𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤀 𐤌𐤔𐤊 𐤅𐤕𐤁𐤋
וְאָ֣מַרְתָּ֔ כֹּ֥ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה אָמַ֖ר הִנְנִ֤י אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ גּ֔וֹג רֹ֖אשׁ נְשִׂ֕יא מֶ֥שֶׁךְ וְתֻבָֽל׃ wə·’ā·mar·tā kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar hin·nî ’ê·le·ḵā gō·wḡ rōš nə·śî me·šeḵ wə·ṯu·ḇāl — WLC · 3

I will turn you around, put hooks in your jaws, and bring you out - with all your army— your horses, your horsemen in full armor…, [and] a great company armed with shields and bucklers, all brandishing their swords.

וְשׁ֣וֹבַבְתִּ֔יךָ וְנָתַתִּ֥י חַחִ֖ים בִּלְחָיֶ֑יךָ וְהוֹצֵאתִי֩ אוֹתְךָ֨ וְאֶת־ כָּל־ חֵילֶ֜ךָ סוּסִ֣ים וּפָרָשִׁ֗ים כֻּלָּ֔ם לְבֻשֵׁ֤י מִכְלוֹל֙ רָב֙ קָהָ֥ל צִנָּ֣ה וּמָגֵ֔ן כֻּלָּֽם׃ תֹּפְשֵׂ֥י חֲרָב֖וֹת wə·šō·w·ḇaḇ·tî·ḵā wə·nā·ṯat·tî ḥa·ḥîm bil·ḥā·ye·ḵā wə·hō·w·ṣê·ṯî ’ō·wṯ·ḵā wə·’eṯ- kāl- ḥê·le·ḵā sū·sîm ū·p̄ā·rā·šîm kul·lām lə·ḇu·šê miḵ·lō·wl rāḇ qā·hāl ṣin·nāh ū·mā·ḡên kul·lām tō·p̄ə·śê ḥă·rā·ḇō·wṯ — WLC · 4

Persia, Cush, and Put will accompany them, all with shields and helmets,

פָּרַ֛ס כּ֥וּשׁ וּפ֖וּט אִתָּ֑ם כֻּלָּ֖ם מָגֵ֥ן וְכוֹבָֽע׃ pā·ras kūš ū·p̄ūṭ ’it·tām kul·lām mā·ḡên wə·ḵō·w·ḇā‘ — WLC · 5

[as well as] Gomer with all its troops, and Beth-togarmah… from the far north with all its troops— the many nations with you.

גֹּ֚מֶר וְכָל־ אֲגַפֶּ֔יהָ בֵּ֚ית תּֽוֹגַרְמָ֔ה יַרְכְּתֵ֥י צָפ֖וֹן וְאֶת־ כָּל־ אֲגַפָּ֑יו רַבִּ֖ים עַמִּ֥ים אִתָּֽךְ׃ gō·mer wə·ḵāl ’ă·ḡap·pe·hā bêṯ tō·w·ḡar·māh yar·kə·ṯê ṣā·p̄ō·wn wə·’eṯ- kāl- ’ă·ḡap·pāw rab·bîm ‘am·mîm ’it·tāḵ — WLC · 6

Get ready; prepare yourself, you and all your company gathered around you; you will be their guard.

הִכֹּן֙ וְהָכֵ֣ן לְךָ֔ אַתָּ֕ה וְכָל־ קְהָלֶ֖ךָ הַנִּקְהָלִ֣ים עָלֶ֑יךָ וְהָיִ֥יתָ לָהֶ֖ם לְמִשְׁמָֽר׃ hik·kōn wə·hā·ḵên lə·ḵā ’at·tāh wə·ḵāl qə·hā·le·ḵā han·niq·hā·lîm ‘ā·le·ḵā wə·hā·yî·ṯā lā·hem lə·miš·mār — WLC · 7

After a long time you will be summoned. In the latter years you will enter… a land that has recovered from war, [whose people] were gathered from many nations to the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate. They had been brought out from the nations, and all now dwell securely.
𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤐𐤒𐤃 𐤁𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤁𐤕 𐤌𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤌𐤒𐤁𐤑𐤕 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤓𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤇𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤄𐤅𐤑𐤀𐤄 𐤌𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤋𐤁𐤈𐤇
רַבִּים֮ מִיָּמִ֣ים תִּפָּקֵד֒ בְּאַחֲרִ֨ית הַשָּׁנִ֜ים תָּב֣וֹא׀ אֶל־ אֶ֣רֶץ׀ מְשׁוֹבֶ֣בֶת מֵחֶ֗רֶב מְקֻבֶּ֙צֶת֙ רַבִּ֔ים מֵעַמִּ֣ים עַ֚ל הָרֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֲשֶׁר־ תָּמִ֑יד הָי֥וּ לְחָרְבָּ֖ה וְהִיא֙ הוּצָ֔אָה מֵעַמִּ֣ים כֻּלָּֽם׃ וְיָשְׁב֥וּ לָבֶ֖טַח rab·bîm mî·yā·mîm tip·pā·qêḏ bə·’a·ḥă·rîṯ haš·šā·nîm tā·ḇō·w ’el- ’e·reṣ mə·šō·w·ḇe·ḇeṯ mê·ḥe·reḇ mə·qub·be·ṣeṯ rab·bîm mê·‘am·mîm ‘al hā·rê yiś·rā·’êl ’ă·šer- tā·mîḏ hā·yū lə·ḥā·rə·bāh wə·hî hū·ṣā·’āh mê·‘am·mîm kul·lām wə·yā·šə·ḇū lā·ḇe·ṭaḥ — WLC · 8

You and all your troops, and many peoples with you will go up, advancing like a thunderstorm; you will be like a cloud covering the land.
𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤂𐤐𐤉𐤊 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤊𐤎 𐤅𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤕 𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤊𐤔𐤀𐤄 𐤕𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤏𐤍𐤍 𐤋𐤊𐤎𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑
אַתָּה֙ וְכָל־ אֲגַפֶּ֔יךָ רַבִּ֖ים וְעַמִּ֥ים אוֹתָֽךְ׃ס וְעָלִ֙יתָ֙ תָב֔וֹא כַּשֹּׁאָ֣ה תִּֽהְיֶ֑ה כֶּעָנָ֛ן לְכַסּ֥וֹת הָאָ֖רֶץ ’at·tāh wə·ḵāl ’ă·ḡap·pe·ḵā rab·bîm wə·‘am·mîm ’ō·w·ṯāḵ wə·‘ā·lî·ṯā ṯā·ḇō·w kaš·šō·’āh tih·yeh ke·‘ā·nān lə·ḵas·sō·wṯ hā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 9

This is what the Lord GOD says:… On that day, thoughts will arise in your mind, and you will devise an evil plan.
𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤏𐤋𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤋𐤁𐤁𐤊 𐤅𐤇𐤔𐤁𐤕 𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤌𐤇𐤔𐤁𐤕
כֹּ֥ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה אָמַ֖ר וְהָיָ֣ה׀ הַה֗וּא בַּיּ֣וֹם דְבָרִים֙ יַעֲל֤וּ עַל־ לְבָבֶ֔ךָ וְחָשַׁבְתָּ֖ רָעָֽה׃ מַחֲשֶׁ֥בֶת kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar wə·hā·yāh ha·hū bay·yō·wm ḏə·ḇā·rîm ya·‘ă·lū ‘al- lə·ḇā·ḇe·ḵā wə·ḥā·šaḇ·tā rā·‘āh ma·ḥă·še·ḇeṯ — WLC · 10

You will say, ‘I will go up against a land of unwalled villages; I will come against a quiet people who dwell securely, all of them living without walls [or] bars or gates—
𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤐𐤓𐤆𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤔𐤒𐤈𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤋𐤁𐤈𐤇 𐤊𐤋𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤇𐤅𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤇 𐤅𐤃𐤋𐤕𐤉𐤌
וְאָמַרְתָּ֗ אֶֽעֱלֶה֙ עַל־ אֶ֣רֶץ פְּרָז֔וֹת אָבוֹא֙ הַשֹּׁ֣קְטִ֔ים יֹשְׁבֵ֖י לָבֶ֑טַח כֻּלָּ֗ם יֹֽשְׁבִים֙ בְּאֵ֣ין חוֹמָ֔ה אֵ֥ין לָהֶֽם׃ וּבְרִ֥יחַ וּדְלָתַ֖יִם wə·’ā·mar·tā ’e·‘ĕ·leh ‘al- ’e·reṣ pə·rā·zō·wṯ ’ā·ḇō·w haš·šō·qə·ṭîm yō·šə·ḇê lā·ḇe·ṭaḥ kul·lām yō·šə·ḇîm bə·’ên ḥō·w·māh ’ên lā·hem ū·ḇə·rî·aḥ ū·ḏə·lā·ṯa·yim — WLC · 11

in order to seize the spoil and carry off the plunder…, to turn a hand against the desolate places now inhabited and against a people gathered from the nations, who have acquired livestock and possessions and who live at the center of the land.’
𐤋𐤔𐤋𐤋 𐤔𐤋𐤋 𐤅𐤋𐤁𐤆 𐤁𐤆 𐤋𐤄𐤔𐤉𐤁 𐤉𐤃𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤇𐤓𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤍𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤎𐤐 𐤌𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤌𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤒𐤍𐤉𐤍 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤈𐤁𐤅𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑
לִשְׁלֹ֥ל שָׁלָ֖ל וְלָבֹ֣ז בַּ֑ז לְהָשִׁ֨יב יָדְךָ֜ עַל־ חֳרָב֣וֹת נוֹשָׁבֹ֗ת וְאֶל־ עַם֙ מְאֻסָּ֣ף מִגּוֹיִ֔ם עֹשֶׂה֙ מִקְנֶ֣ה וְקִנְיָ֔ן יֹשְׁבֵ֖י עַל־ טַבּ֥וּר הָאָֽרֶץ׃ liš·lōl šā·lāl wə·lā·ḇōz baz lə·hā·šîḇ yā·ḏə·ḵā ‘al- ḥo·rā·ḇō·wṯ nō·wō·šā·ḇōṯ wə·’el- ‘am mə·’us·sāp̄ mig·gō·w·yim ‘ō·śeh miq·neh wə·qin·yān yō·šə·ḇê ‘al- ṭab·būr hā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 12

Sheba and Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish with all its villages will ask -, ‘Have you come to capture the plunder? Have you assembled your hordes to carry away loot, to make off with silver and gold, to take cattle and goods, to seize great spoil?’
𐤔𐤁𐤀 𐤅𐤃𐤃𐤍 𐤅𐤎𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤕𐤓𐤔𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤊𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤀 𐤄𐤋𐤔𐤋𐤋 𐤔𐤋𐤋 𐤄𐤒𐤄𐤋𐤕 𐤒𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤄𐤋𐤁𐤆 𐤁𐤆 𐤋𐤔𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤎𐤐 𐤅𐤆𐤄𐤁 𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤕 𐤌𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤒𐤍𐤉𐤍 𐤋𐤔𐤋𐤋 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋𐤎 𐤔𐤋𐤋
שְׁבָ֡א וּ֠דְדָן וְסֹחֲרֵ֨י תַרְשִׁ֤ישׁ וְכָל־ כְּפִרֶ֙יהָ֙ יֹאמְר֣וּ לְךָ֔ אַתָּ֣ה בָ֔א הֲלִשְׁלֹ֤ל שָׁלָל֙ הִקְהַ֣לְתָּ קְהָלֶ֑ךָ הֲלָבֹ֥ז בַּ֖ז לָשֵׂ֣את׀ כֶּ֣סֶף וְזָהָ֗ב לָקַ֙חַת֙ מִקְנֶ֣ה וְקִנְיָ֔ן לִשְׁלֹ֖ל גָּדֽוֹל׃ס שָׁלָ֥ל šə·ḇā ū·ḏə·ḏān wə·sō·ḥă·rê ṯar·šîš wə·ḵāl kə·p̄i·re·hā yō·mə·rū lə·ḵā ’at·tāh ḇā hă·liš·lōl šā·lāl hiq·hal·tā qə·hā·le·ḵā hă·lā·ḇōz baz lā·śêṯ ke·sep̄ wə·zā·hāḇ lā·qa·ḥaṯ miq·neh wə·qin·yān liš·lōl gā·ḏō·wl šā·lāl — WLC · 13

Therefore prophesy, son of man, and tell Gog that this is what the Lord GOD says: On that day when My people Israel are dwelling securely, will you not take notice of this?
𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤋𐤂𐤅𐤂 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤔𐤁𐤕 𐤋𐤁𐤈𐤇 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤕𐤃𐤏
לָכֵן֙ הִנָּבֵ֣א בֶן־ אָדָ֔ם וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ לְג֔וֹג כֹּ֥ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה אָמַ֖ר הַה֗וּא בַּיּ֣וֹם עַמִּ֧י יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל בְּשֶׁ֨בֶת לָבֶ֖טַח הֲל֣וֹא׀ תֵּדָֽע׃ lā·ḵên hin·nā·ḇê ḇen- ’ā·ḏām wə·’ā·mar·tā lə·ḡō·wḡ kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar ha·hū bay·yō·wm ‘am·mî yiś·rā·’êl bə·še·ḇeṯ lā·ḇe·ṭaḥ hă·lō·w tê·ḏā‘ — WLC · 14

And you will come from your place out of the far north— you and many peoples with you, all riding horses— a mighty horde, a huge army.
𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌𐤊 𐤌𐤉𐤓𐤊𐤕𐤉 𐤑𐤐𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤊 𐤊𐤋𐤌 𐤓𐤊𐤁𐤉 𐤎𐤅𐤎𐤉𐤌 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤒𐤄𐤋 𐤓𐤁 𐤅𐤇𐤉𐤋
וּבָ֤אתָ מִמְּקֽוֹמְךָ֙ מִיַּרְכְּתֵ֣י צָפ֔וֹן אַתָּ֕ה רַבִּ֖ים וְעַמִּ֥ים אִתָּ֑ךְ כֻּלָּ֔ם רֹכְבֵ֤י סוּסִים֙ גָּד֖וֹל קָהָ֥ל רָֽב׃ וְחַ֥יִל ū·ḇā·ṯā mim·mə·qō·wm·ḵā mî·yar·kə·ṯê ṣā·p̄ō·wn ’at·tāh rab·bîm wə·‘am·mîm ’it·tāḵ kul·lām rō·ḵə·ḇê sū·sîm gā·ḏō·wl qā·hāl rāḇ wə·ḥa·yil — WLC · 15

You will advance against My people Israel like a cloud covering the land. It will happen in the latter days, O Gog, that I will bring you against My land, so that the nations may know Me when I show Myself holy in you before their eyes.

This is what the Lord GOD says: Are you the one of whom I have spoken in former days through My servants, the prophets of Israel, who in those times prophesied for years that I would bring you against them?

Now on that day when Gog comes against the land of Israel, declares the Lord GOD, My wrath… will flare up.

In My zeal and fiery rage I proclaim… that on that day there will be a great earthquake in the land of Israel.

The fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the beasts of the field, every creature that crawls upon the ground, and all mankind on the face of the earth will tremble at My presence. The mountains will be thrown down, the cliffs will collapse, and every wall will fall to the ground.

And I will summon a sword against Gog on all My mountains, declares the Lord GOD, and every man’s sword will be against his brother.

I will execute judgment upon him with plague and bloodshed. I will pour out torrents of rain, hailstones…, fire, and sulfur on him and on his troops and on the many nations with him.

I will magnify and sanctify Myself, and I will reveal Myself in the sight of many nations. Then they will know that I am the LORD.
