Chapter 37
The Valley of Dry Bones
1
The hand of the LORD was upon me, and He brought me out by His Spirit and set me down in the middle of the valley, and it [was] full of bones.
𐤉𐤃 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤑𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤇𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤁𐤒𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤄 𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤅𐤕
יַד־ יְהוָה֒ הָיְתָ֣ה עָלַי֮ וַיּוֹצִאֵ֤נִי יְהוָ֔ה בְר֙וּחַ֙ וַיְנִיחֵ֖נִי בְּת֣וֹךְ הַבִּקְעָ֑ה וְהִ֖יא מְלֵאָ֥ה עֲצָמֽוֹת׃ yaḏ- Yah·weh hā·yə·ṯāh ‘ā·lay way·yō·w·ṣi·’ê·nî Yah·weh ḇə·rū·aḥ way·nî·ḥê·nî bə·ṯō·wḵ hab·biq·‘āh wə·hî mə·lê·’āh ‘ă·ṣā·mō·wṯ — WLC · 1

He led me all around among them, and I saw a great many [bones] on the floor of the valley, and indeed, they were very dry.

וְהֶעֱבִירַ֥נִי סָבִ֣יב׀ סָבִ֑יב עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם וְהִנֵּ֨ה מְאֹד֙ רַבּ֤וֹת עַל־ פְּנֵ֣י הַבִּקְעָ֔ה וְהִנֵּ֖ה מְאֹֽד׃ יְבֵשׁ֥וֹת wə·he·‘ĕ·ḇî·ra·nî sā·ḇîḇ sā·ḇîḇ ‘ă·lê·hem wə·hin·nêh mə·’ōḏ rab·bō·wṯ ‘al- pə·nê hab·biq·‘āh wə·hin·nêh mə·’ōḏ yə·ḇê·šō·wṯ — WLC · 2

Then He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones come to life?” “O Lord GOD,” I replied, “only You know.”
𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤕𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֔י בֶּן־ אָדָ֕ם הָאֵ֑לֶּה הָעֲצָמ֣וֹת הֲתִחְיֶ֖ינָה אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִ֖ה וָאֹמַ֕ר אַתָּ֥ה יָדָֽעְתָּ׃ way·yō·mer ’ê·lay ben- ’ā·ḏām hā·’êl·leh hā·‘ă·ṣā·mō·wṯ hă·ṯiḥ·ye·nāh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh wā·’ō·mar ’at·tāh yā·ḏā·‘ə·tā — WLC · 3

And He said to me, “Prophesy concerning these bones and tell them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD!
𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤁𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֔י הִנָּבֵ֖א עַל־ הָאֵ֑לֶּה הָעֲצָמ֣וֹת וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם הַיְבֵשׁ֔וֹת הָעֲצָמוֹת֙ שִׁמְע֖וּ דְּבַר־ יְהוָֽה׃ way·yō·mer ’ê·lay hin·nā·ḇê ‘al- hā·’êl·leh hā·‘ă·ṣā·mō·wṯ wə·’ā·mar·tā ’ă·lê·hem hay·ḇê·šō·wṯ hā·‘ă·ṣā·mō·wṯ šim·‘ū də·ḇar- Yah·weh — WLC · 4

This is what the Lord GOD says to these… bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you will come to life.
𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤌𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤁𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤕𐤌
כֹּ֤ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה אָמַר֙ הָאֵ֑לֶּה הִנֵּ֨ה לָעֲצָמ֖וֹת אֲנִ֜י ר֖וּחַ מֵבִ֥יא בָכֶ֛ם וִחְיִיתֶֽם׃ kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar hā·’êl·leh hin·nêh lā·‘ă·ṣā·mō·wṯ ’ă·nî rū·aḥ mê·ḇî ḇā·ḵem wiḥ·yî·ṯem — WLC · 5

I will attach tendons to you and make flesh grow upon you and cover you with skin. I will put breath within you so that you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’”
𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤂𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤁𐤔𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤒𐤓𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤏𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤁𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
וְנָתַתִּי֩ גִּדִ֜ים עֲלֵיכֶ֨ם בָּשָׂ֗ר וְֽהַעֲלֵתִ֧י עֲלֵיכֶ֣ם וְקָרַמְתִּ֤י עֲלֵיכֶם֙ ע֔וֹר וְנָתַתִּ֥י ר֖וּחַ בָכֶ֛ם וִחְיִיתֶ֑ם וִידַעְתֶּ֖ם כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ wə·nā·ṯat·tî gi·ḏîm ‘ă·lê·ḵem bā·śār wə·ha·‘ă·lê·ṯî ‘ă·lê·ḵem wə·qā·ram·tî ‘ă·lê·ḵem ‘ō·wr wə·nā·ṯat·tî rū·aḥ ḇā·ḵem wiḥ·yî·ṯem wî·ḏa‘·tem kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh — WLC · 6

So I prophesied as I had been commanded. And as I prophesied, there was suddenly a noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to bone.
𐤅𐤍𐤁𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤑𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤓𐤏𐤔 𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤕𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤅 𐤏𐤑𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤅
וְנִבֵּ֖אתִי כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר צֻוֵּ֑יתִי כְּהִנָּֽבְאִי֙ וַֽיְהִי־ וְהִנֵּה־ ק֤וֹל רַ֔עַשׁ עֲצָמ֔וֹת וַתִּקְרְב֣וּ עֶ֖צֶם אֶל־ עַצְמֽוֹ׃ wə·nib·bê·ṯî ka·’ă·šer ṣuw·wê·ṯî kə·hin·nā·ḇə·’î way·hî- wə·hin·nêh- qō·wl ra·‘aš ‘ă·ṣā·mō·wṯ wat·tiq·rə·ḇū ‘e·ṣem ’el- ‘aṣ·mōw — WLC · 7

As I looked on, tendons appeared on them, flesh grew, and skin… covered them;… but there was no breath in them.
𐤅𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤂𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤏𐤅𐤓 𐤌𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤌 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤁𐤄𐤌
וְרָאִ֜יתִי גִּדִים֙ וְהִנֵּֽה־ עֲלֵיהֶ֤ם וּבָשָׂ֣ר עָלָ֔ה ע֖וֹר מִלְמָ֑עְלָה וַיִּקְרַ֧ם עֲלֵיהֶ֛ם אֵ֥ין וְר֖וּחַ בָּהֶֽם׃ wə·rā·’î·ṯî gi·ḏîm wə·hin·nêh- ‘ă·lê·hem ū·ḇā·śār ‘ā·lāh ‘ō·wr mil·mā·‘ə·lāh way·yiq·ram ‘ă·lê·hem ’ên wə·rū·aḥ bā·hem — WLC · 8

Then He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and tell… the breath that this is what the Lord GOD says: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe into these slain, so that they may live!”
𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤁𐤀𐤉 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏 𐤄𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤓𐤅𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤐𐤇𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤁𐤄𐤓𐤅𐤂𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤉𐤅
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֔י הִנָּבֵ֖א אֶל־ הָר֑וּחַ הִנָּבֵ֣א בֶן־ אָ֠דָם וְאָמַרְתָּ֨ אֶל־ הָר֜וּחַ כֹּֽה־ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֗ה אָמַ֣ר׀ בֹּ֣אִי מֵאַרְבַּ֤ע הָר֔וּחַ רוּחוֹת֙ וּפְחִ֛י הָאֵ֖לֶּה בַּהֲרוּגִ֥ים וְיִֽחְיֽוּ׃ way·yō·mer ’ê·lay hin·nā·ḇê ’el- hā·rū·aḥ hin·nā·ḇê ḇen- ’ā·ḏām wə·’ā·mar·tā ’el- hā·rū·aḥ kōh- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar bō·’î mê·’ar·ba‘ hā·rū·aḥ rū·ḥō·wṯ ū·p̄ə·ḥî hā·’êl·leh ba·hă·rū·ḡîm wə·yiḥ·yū — WLC · 9

So I prophesied as He had commanded me, and the breath entered them, and they came to life and stood on their feet— a vast… army.
𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤑𐤅𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤅𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤌𐤀𐤃𐤎 𐤇𐤉𐤋
וְהִנַּבֵּ֖אתִי כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר צִוָּ֑נִי הָר֜וּחַ וַתָּבוֹא֩ בָהֶ֨ם וַיִּֽחְי֗וּ וַיַּֽעַמְדוּ֙ עַל־ רַגְלֵיהֶ֔ם גָּד֥וֹל מְאֹד־ מְאֹֽד׃ס חַ֖יִל wə·hin·nab·bê·ṯî ka·’ă·šer ṣiw·wā·nî hā·rū·aḥ wat·tā·ḇō·w ḇā·hem way·yiḥ·yū way·ya·‘am·ḏū ‘al- raḡ·lê·hem gā·ḏō·wl mə·’ōḏ- mə·’ōḏ ḥa·yil — WLC · 10

Then He said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Look, they are saying, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope has perished; we are cut off
𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤉𐤁𐤔𐤅 𐤕𐤒𐤅𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤃𐤄 𐤍𐤂𐤆𐤓𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤍𐤅
וַיֹּאמֶר֮ אֵלַי֒ בֶּן־ אָדָ֕ם הָאֵ֔לֶּה הָעֲצָמ֣וֹת כָּל־ בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל הִנֵּ֣ה הֵ֑מָּה אֹמְרִ֗ים עַצְמוֹתֵ֛ינוּ יָבְשׁ֧וּ תִקְוָתֵ֖נוּ וְאָבְדָ֥ה נִגְזַ֥רְנוּ לָֽנוּ׃ way·yō·mer ’ê·lay ben- ’ā·ḏām hā·’êl·leh hā·‘ă·ṣā·mō·wṯ kāl- bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl hin·nêh hêm·māh ’ō·mə·rîm ‘aṣ·mō·w·ṯê·nū yā·ḇə·šū ṯiq·wā·ṯê·nū wə·’ā·ḇə·ḏāh niḡ·zar·nū lā·nū — WLC · 11

Therefore prophesy and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘O My people, I will open your graves and bring you up from them, and I will bring you back to the land of Israel.

לָכֵן֩ הִנָּבֵ֨א וְאָמַרְתָּ֜ אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם כֹּֽה־ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִה֒ אָמַר֮ הִנֵּה֩ עַמִּ֑י אֲנִ֨י פֹתֵ֜חַ אֶת־ קִבְרֽוֹתֵיכֶ֗ם וְהַעֲלֵיתִ֥י אֶתְכֶ֛ם מִקִּבְרוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם וְהֵבֵאתִ֥י אֶתְכֶ֖ם אֶל־ אַדְמַ֥ת יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס lā·ḵên hin·nā·ḇê wə·’ā·mar·tā ’ă·lê·hem kōh- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar hin·nêh ‘am·mî ’ă·nî p̄ō·ṯê·aḥ ’eṯ- qiḇ·rō·w·ṯê·ḵem wə·ha·‘ă·lê·ṯî ’eṯ·ḵem miq·qiḇ·rō·w·ṯê·ḵem wə·hê·ḇê·ṯî ’eṯ·ḵem ’el- ’aḏ·maṯ yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 12

Then you, My people, will know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves and bring you up from them.
𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤐𐤕𐤇𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤒𐤁𐤓𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤌𐤒𐤁𐤓𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌
עַמִּֽי׃ וִֽידַעְתֶּ֖ם כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֑ה בְּפִתְחִ֣י אֶת־ קִבְרֽוֹתֵיכֶ֗ם וּבְהַעֲלוֹתִ֥י אֶתְכֶ֛ם מִקִּבְרוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם ‘am·mî wî·ḏa‘·tem kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh bə·p̄iṯ·ḥî ’eṯ- qiḇ·rō·w·ṯê·ḵem ū·ḇə·ha·‘ă·lō·w·ṯî ’eṯ·ḵem miq·qiḇ·rō·w·ṯê·ḵem — WLC · 13

I will put My Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will do it, declares the LORD.’”

וְנָתַתִּ֨י רוּחִ֤י בָכֶם֙ וִחְיִיתֶ֔ם וְהִנַּחְתִּ֥י אֶתְכֶ֖ם עַל־ אַדְמַתְכֶ֑ם וִידַעְתֶּ֞ם כִּי־ אֲנִ֧י יְהוָ֛ה דִּבַּ֥רְתִּי וְעָשִׂ֖יתִי נְאֻם־ יְהוָֽה׃פ wə·nā·ṯat·tî rū·ḥî ḇā·ḵem wiḥ·yî·ṯem wə·hin·naḥ·tî ’eṯ·ḵem ‘al- ’aḏ·maṯ·ḵem wî·ḏa‘·tem kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh dib·bar·tî wə·‘ā·śî·ṯî nə·’um- Yah·weh — WLC · 14
One Nation with One King

Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 15

“And you, son of man, take a single stick and write on it: ‘Belonging to Judah and to the Israelites… associated with him.’ Then take another stick and write on it: ‘Belonging to Joseph— the stick of Ephraim— and to all the house of Israel associated with him.’

you are to tell them that this is what the Lord GOD… says: ‘I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel associated with him, and I will put them together with the stick of Judah. I will make them into a single stick, and they will become one in My hand.’

I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel, and one king will rule over… all of them. Then they will no… longer be two nations and will never again be divided into two kingdoms.

They will no longer defile themselves with their idols or detestable images, or with any of their transgressions. I will save them from all their apostasies by which they sinned, and I will cleanse them. Then they will be My people, and I will be their God.

My servant David will be king over them, and there will be one shepherd for all of them. They will follow My ordinances and keep and observe My statutes. -

They will live in the land that I gave to My servant Jacob, where your fathers lived They will live there… forever… with their children and grandchildren…, and My servant David will be their prince forever.

And I will make a covenant of peace with them; it will be… an everlasting covenant. I will establish them and multiply them, and I will set My sanctuary among them forever.
