Chapter 34
A Prophecy against Israel’s Shepherds
1
Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel. Prophesy and tell [them] that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Woe to the shepherds of Israel, who vvv only feed themselves! Should not the shepherds feed their flock?
𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀 𐤏𐤋 𐤓𐤅𐤏𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤅𐤉 𐤓𐤏𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤓𐤏𐤅 𐤄𐤑𐤀𐤍
בֶּן־ אָדָ֕ם הִנָּבֵ֖א עַל־ רוֹעֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל הִנָּבֵ֣א וְאָמַרְתָּ֩ אֲלֵיהֶ֨ם לָרֹעִ֜ים כֹּ֥ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֗ה אָמַ֣ר׀ ה֤וֹי רֹעֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֲשֶׁ֤ר הָיוּ֙ רֹעִ֣ים אוֹתָ֔ם הֲל֣וֹא הָרֹעִֽים׃ יִרְע֖וּ הַצֹּ֔אן ben- ’ā·ḏām hin·nā·ḇê ‘al- rō·w·‘ê yiś·rā·’êl hin·nā·ḇê wə·’ā·mar·tā ’ă·lê·hem lā·rō·‘îm kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar hō·w rō·‘ê- yiś·rā·’êl ’ă·šer hā·yū rō·‘îm ’ō·w·ṯām hă·lō·w hā·rō·‘îm yir·‘ū haṣ·ṣōn — WLC · 2

- You eat the fat, wear the wool, and butcher the fattened sheep, but you do not feed the flock.

אֶת־ תֹּאכֵ֙לוּ֙ וְאֶת־ הַחֵ֤לֶב תִּלְבָּ֔שׁוּ הַצֶּ֣מֶר תִּזְבָּ֑חוּ הַבְּרִיאָ֖ה לֹ֥א תִרְעֽוּ׃ הַצֹּ֖אן ’eṯ- tō·ḵê·lū wə·’eṯ- ha·ḥê·leḇ til·bā·šū haṣ·ṣe·mer tiz·bā·ḥū hab·bə·rî·’āh lō ṯir·‘ū haṣ·ṣōn — WLC · 3

- You have not strengthened the weak, healed the sick,… bound up the injured,… brought back the strays,… or searched for the lost. Instead, you have ruled them with violence and cruelty.

אֶֽת־ לֹ֨א חִזַּקְתֶּ֜ם וְאֶת־ הַנַּחְלוֹת֩ רִפֵּאתֶ֗ם הַחוֹלָ֣ה לֹֽא־ חֲבַשְׁתֶּ֔ם וְאֶת־ וְלַנִּשְׁבֶּ֙רֶת֙ לֹ֣א הֲשֵׁבֹתֶ֔ם וְאֶת־ הַנִּדַּ֙חַת֙ לֹ֣א בִקַּשְׁתֶּ֑ם הָאֹבֶ֖דֶת לֹ֣א רְדִיתֶ֥ם אֹתָ֖ם וּבְחָזְקָ֛ה וּבְפָֽרֶךְ׃ ’eṯ- lō ḥiz·zaq·tem wə·’eṯ- han·naḥ·lō·wṯ rip·pê·ṯem ha·ḥō·w·lāh lō- ḥă·ḇaš·tem wə·’eṯ- wə·lan·niš·be·reṯ lō hă·šê·ḇō·ṯem wə·’eṯ- han·nid·da·ḥaṯ lō ḇiq·qaš·tem hā·’ō·ḇe·ḏeṯ lō rə·ḏî·ṯem ’ō·ṯām ū·ḇə·ḥā·zə·qāh ū·ḇə·p̄ā·reḵ — WLC · 4

They were scattered for lack of a shepherd, and when they were scattered they became food for all the wild beasts.

וַתְּפוּצֶ֖ינָה מִבְּלִ֣י רֹעֶ֑ה וַתְּפוּצֶֽינָה׃ וַתִּהְיֶ֧ינָה לְאָכְלָ֛ה לְכָל־ הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה חַיַּ֥ת wat·tə·p̄ū·ṣe·nāh mib·bə·lî rō·‘eh wat·tə·p̄ū·ṣe·nāh wat·tih·ye·nāh lə·’āḵ·lāh lə·ḵāl haś·śā·ḏeh ḥay·yaṯ — WLC · 5

My flock went astray on all the mountains and every high… hill. They were scattered… over the face of all the earth, with no one to search [for them] or seek them out.’

צֹאנִי֙ יִשְׁגּ֤וּ בְּכָל־ הֶ֣הָרִ֔ים וְעַ֖ל כָּל־ רָמָ֑ה וְעַ֨ל גִּבְעָ֣ה נָפֹ֣צוּ צֹאנִ֔י פְּנֵ֤י כָּל־ הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ וְאֵ֥ין דּוֹרֵ֖שׁ וְאֵ֥ין מְבַקֵּֽשׁ׃ ṣō·nî yiš·gū bə·ḵāl he·hā·rîm wə·‘al kāl- rā·māh wə·‘al giḇ·‘āh nā·p̄ō·ṣū ṣō·nî pə·nê kāl- hā·’ā·reṣ wə·’ên dō·w·rêš wə·’ên mə·ḇaq·qêš — WLC · 6

Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the LORD:
𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
לָכֵ֣ן רֹעִ֔ים שִׁמְע֖וּ אֶת־ דְּבַ֥ר יְהוָֽה׃ lā·ḵên rō·‘îm šim·‘ū ’eṯ- də·ḇar Yah·weh — WLC · 7

‘As surely as I… live, declares the Lord GOD, because My flock lacks a shepherd and has become prey… [and] food for every wild beast, and because My shepherds did not search for My flock but fed themselves [instead]…,
𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤌 𐤇𐤉 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤑𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤁𐤆 𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤉𐤉𐤍𐤄 𐤑𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤄 𐤋𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤇𐤉𐤕 𐤓𐤏𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤃𐤓𐤔𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤑𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤏𐤅 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤀 𐤓𐤏𐤅𐤎 𐤑𐤀𐤍𐤉
אָ֜נִי אִם־ חַי־ נְאֻ֣ם׀ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֗ה לֹ֣א יַ֣עַן צֹאנִ֣י׀ מֵאֵ֣ין רֹעֶ֔ה הֱיֽוֹת־ לָבַ֡ז וַתִּֽהְיֶינָה֩ צֹאנִ֨י לְאָכְלָ֜ה לְכָל־ הַשָּׂדֶה֙ חַיַּ֤ת רֹעַ֖י וְלֹֽא־ דָרְשׁ֥וּ אֶת־ צֹאנִ֑י וַיִּרְע֤וּ הָֽרֹעִים֙ אוֹתָ֔ם וְאֶת־ לֹ֥א רָעֽוּ׃ס צֹאנִ֖י ’ā·nî ’im- ḥay- nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh lō ya·‘an ṣō·nî mê·’ên rō·‘eh hĕ·yō·wṯ- lā·ḇaz wat·tih·ye·nāh ṣō·nî lə·’āḵ·lāh lə·ḵāl haś·śā·ḏeh ḥay·yaṯ rō·‘ay wə·lō- ḏā·rə·šū ’eṯ- ṣō·nî way·yir·‘ū hā·rō·‘îm ’ō·w·ṯām wə·’eṯ- lō rā·‘ū ṣō·nî — WLC · 8

therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the LORD!’
𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
לָכֵן֙ הָֽרֹעִ֔ים שִׁמְע֖וּ דְּבַר־ יְהוָֽה׃ lā·ḵên hā·rō·‘îm šim·‘ū də·ḇar- Yah·weh — WLC · 9

This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I [am] against the shepherds, and I will demand from them My flock and remove them from tending the flock, so that they can no longer feed themselves. For I will deliver My flock from their mouths, and it will no longer be food for them.’
𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤃𐤓𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤌𐤉𐤃𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤑𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤓𐤏𐤅𐤕 𐤑𐤀𐤍 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤉𐤓𐤏𐤅 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤑𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤑𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤐𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤄𐤉𐤉𐤍 𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤄𐤎 𐤋𐤄𐤌
כֹּה־ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֗ה אָמַ֞ר הִנְנִ֨י אֶֽל־ הָרֹעִ֜ים וְֽדָרַשְׁתִּ֧י מִיָּדָ֗ם אֶת־ צֹאנִ֣י וְהִשְׁבַּתִּים֙ מֵרְע֣וֹת צֹ֔אן וְלֹא־ ע֛וֹד יִרְע֥וּ הָרֹעִ֖ים אוֹתָ֑ם וְהִצַּלְתִּ֤י צֹאנִי֙ מִפִּיהֶ֔ם וְלֹֽא־ תִהְיֶ֥יןָ לְאָכְלָֽה׃ס לָהֶ֖ם kōh- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar hin·nî ’el- hā·rō·‘îm wə·ḏā·raš·tî mî·yā·ḏām ’eṯ- ṣō·nî wə·hiš·bat·tîm mê·rə·‘ō·wṯ ṣōn wə·lō- ‘ō·wḏ yir·‘ū hā·rō·‘îm ’ō·w·ṯām wə·hiṣ·ṣal·tî ṣō·nî mip·pî·hem wə·lō- ṯih·ye·nā lə·’āḵ·lāh lā·hem — WLC · 10
The Good Shepherd

For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I Myself will search for My flock and seek them out.
𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤃𐤓𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤑𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤕𐤉𐤌
כִּ֛י כֹּ֥ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה אָמַ֖ר הִנְנִי־ אָ֕נִי וְדָרַשְׁתִּ֥י אֶת־ צֹאנִ֖י וּבִקַּרְתִּֽים׃ kî kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar hin·nî- ’ā·nî wə·ḏā·raš·tî ’eṯ- ṣō·nî ū·ḇiq·qar·tîm — WLC · 11

As a shepherd looks for his scattered sheep when he is among the flock, so I will look for My flock. I will rescue them from all the places to which they were scattered… on a day of clouds and darkness.

רֹעֶ֨ה כְּבַקָּרַת֩ נִפְרָשׁ֔וֹת עֶדְר֜וֹ בְּיוֹם־ הֱיוֹת֤וֹ בְתוֹךְ־ צֹאנוֹ֙ כֵּ֖ן אֲבַקֵּ֣ר אֶת־ צֹאנִ֑י וְהִצַּלְתִּ֣י אֶתְהֶ֗ם מִכָּל־ הַמְּקוֹמֹת֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נָפֹ֣צוּ שָׁ֔ם בְּי֥וֹם עָנָ֖ן וַעֲרָפֶֽל׃ rō·‘eh kə·ḇaq·qā·raṯ nip̄·rā·šō·wṯ ‘eḏ·rōw bə·yō·wm- hĕ·yō·w·ṯōw ḇə·ṯō·wḵ- ṣō·nōw kên ’ă·ḇaq·qêr ’eṯ- ṣō·nî wə·hiṣ·ṣal·tî ’eṯ·hem mik·kāl ham·mə·qō·w·mōṯ ’ă·šer nā·p̄ō·ṣū šām bə·yō·wm ‘ā·nān wa·‘ă·rā·p̄el — WLC · 12

I will bring them out from the peoples, gather them from the countries, and bring them into their own land. I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines, and in all the settlements of the land.
𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤑𐤀𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤒𐤁𐤑𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤓𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤀𐤐𐤉𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑
וְהוֹצֵאתִ֣ים מִן־ הָעַמִּ֗ים וְקִבַּצְתִּים֙ מִן־ הָ֣אֲרָצ֔וֹת וַהֲבִיאֹתִ֖ים אֶל־ אַדְמָתָ֑ם וּרְעִיתִים֙ אֶל־ הָרֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בָּאֲפִיקִ֕ים וּבְכֹ֖ל מוֹשְׁבֵ֥י הָאָֽרֶץ׃ wə·hō·w·ṣê·ṯîm min- hā·‘am·mîm wə·qib·baṣ·tîm min- hā·’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ wa·hă·ḇî·’ō·ṯîm ’el- ’aḏ·mā·ṯām ū·rə·‘î·ṯîm ’el- hā·rê yiś·rā·’êl bā·’ă·p̄î·qîm ū·ḇə·ḵōl mō·wō·šə·ḇê hā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 13

I will feed them in good pasture, and the lofty mountains of Israel will be their grazing land. There they will lie down in a good grazing land; they will feed in rich pasture on the mountains of Israel.

אֶרְעֶ֣ה אֹתָ֔ם טּוֹב֙ בְּמִרְעֶה־ מְרֽוֹם־ וּבְהָרֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל יִהְיֶ֣ה נְוֵהֶ֑ם שָׁ֤ם תִּרְבַּ֙צְנָה֙ טּ֔וֹב בְּנָ֣וֶה תִּרְעֶ֖ינָה שָׁמֵ֛ן וּמִרְעֶ֥ה אֶל־ הָרֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ ’er·‘eh ’ō·ṯām ṭō·wḇ bə·mir·‘eh- mə·rō·wm- ū·ḇə·hā·rê yiś·rā·’êl yih·yeh nə·wê·hem šām tir·baṣ·nāh ṭō·wḇ bə·nā·weh tir·‘e·nāh šā·mên ū·mir·‘eh ’el- hā·rê yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 14

I will tend My flock… and make them lie down, declares the Lord GOD.

אֲנִ֨י אֶרְעֶ֤ה צֹאנִי֙ וַאֲנִ֣י אַרְבִּיצֵ֔ם נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִֽה׃ ’ă·nî ’er·‘eh ṣō·nî wa·’ă·nî ’ar·bî·ṣêm nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh — WLC · 15

- I will seek the lost, bring back the strays, bind up the broken, and strengthen the weak; but the sleek and strong I will destroy. I will shepherd them with justice.’

This is what the Lord GOD… says to you, My flock: ‘I will judge between one sheep and another, between the rams and the goats.

Is it not enough for you to feed on the good pasture? Must you also trample the rest of the pasture with your feet? Is it not enough for you to drink the clear waters? Must you also muddy the rest with your feet?

I will appoint over them one shepherd, My servant David, and he will feed them. He will feed them and be their shepherd.

The Covenant of Peace

I will make with them a covenant of peace and rid the land of wild animals, so that they may dwell securely in the wilderness and sleep in the forest.

The trees of the field will give their fruit, and the land will yield its produce; My flock will be secure in their land. Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I have broken the bars of their yoke and delivered them from the hands that enslaved them.

They will no longer be prey for the nations, and the beasts of the earth will not consume them. They will dwell securely…, and no one will frighten them.

And I will raise up for them a garden of renown, and they will no longer be victims of famine in the land [or] bear the scorn of the nations.

Then they will know that I, the LORD their God, am with them, and that they, the house of Israel, are My people,’ declares the Lord GOD.
