Chapter 32
A Lament for Pharaoh King of Egypt

In the twelfth… year, on the first day of the twelfth… month, the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤁𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤋𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤔𐤓 𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

“Son of man, take up a lament for Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him: ‘You are like a lion among the nations; you are like a monster in the seas. You thrash about in your rivers, churning up the waters with your feet and muddying the streams.’

בֶּן־ אָדָ֗ם שָׂ֤א קִינָה֙ עַל־ פַּרְעֹ֣ה מֶֽלֶךְ־ מִצְרַ֔יִם וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֵלָ֔יו נִדְמֵ֑יתָ כְּפִ֥יר גּוֹיִ֖ם וְאַתָּה֙ כַּתַּנִּ֣ים בַּיַּמִּ֔ים וַתָּ֣גַח בְּנַהֲרוֹתֶ֗יךָ וַתִּדְלַח־ מַ֙יִם֙ בְּרַגְלֶ֔יךָ וַתִּרְפֹּ֖ס נַהֲרוֹתָֽם׃ ben- ’ā·ḏām śā qî·nāh ‘al- par·‘ōh me·leḵ- miṣ·ra·yim wə·’ā·mar·tā ’ê·lāw niḏ·mê·ṯā kə·p̄îr gō·w·yim wə·’at·tāh kat·tan·nîm bay·yam·mîm wat·tā·ḡaḥ bə·na·hă·rō·w·ṯe·ḵā wat·tiḏ·laḥ- ma·yim bə·raḡ·le·ḵā wat·tir·pōs na·hă·rō·w·ṯām — WLC · 2

This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘I will spread My net over you with a company of many peoples, and they will draw you up in My net.

כֹּ֤ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה אָמַר֙ וּפָרַשְׂתִּ֤י רִשְׁתִּ֔י עָלֶ֙יךָ֙ אֶת־ בִּקְהַ֖ל רַבִּ֑ים עַמִּ֣ים וְהֶעֱל֖וּךָ בְּחֶרְמִֽי׃ kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar ū·p̄ā·raś·tî riš·tî ‘ā·le·ḵā ’eṯ- biq·hal rab·bîm ‘am·mîm wə·he·‘ĕ·lū·ḵā bə·ḥer·mî — WLC · 3

I will abandon you on the land and hurl you into the open field. I will cause all the birds of the air to settle upon you, and all the beasts of the earth to eat their fill of you.

וּנְטַשְׁתִּ֣יךָ בָאָ֔רֶץ אֲטִילֶ֑ךָ עַל־ פְּנֵ֥י הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה כָּל־ ע֣וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וְהִשְׁכַּנְתִּ֤י עָלֶ֙יךָ֙ כָּל־ חַיַּ֥ת הָאָֽרֶץ׃ וְהִשְׂבַּעְתִּ֥י מִמְּךָ֖ ū·nə·ṭaš·tî·ḵā ḇā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·ṭî·le·ḵā ‘al- pə·nê haś·śā·ḏeh kāl- ‘ō·wp̄ haš·šā·ma·yim wə·hiš·kan·tî ‘ā·le·ḵā kāl- ḥay·yaṯ hā·’ā·reṣ wə·hiś·ba‘·tî mim·mə·ḵā — WLC · 4

I will put your flesh on the mountains and fill the valleys with your remains.

וְנָתַתִּ֥י אֶת־ בְּשָׂרְךָ֖ עַל־ הֶֽהָרִ֑ים וּמִלֵּאתִ֥י הַגֵּאָי֖וֹת רָמוּתֶֽךָ׃ wə·nā·ṯat·tî ’eṯ- bə·śā·rə·ḵā ‘al- he·hā·rîm ū·mil·lê·ṯî hag·gê·’ā·yō·wṯ rā·mū·ṯe·ḵā — WLC · 5

I will drench the land with the flow of your blood, all the way to the mountains— the ravines will be filled

וְהִשְׁקֵיתִ֨י אֶ֧רֶץ צָפָתְךָ֛ מִדָּמְךָ֖ אֶל־ הֶֽהָרִ֑ים וַאֲפִקִ֖ים יִמָּלְא֥וּן מִמֶּֽךָּ׃ wə·hiš·qê·ṯî ’e·reṣ ṣā·p̄ā·ṯə·ḵā mid·dā·mə·ḵā ’el- he·hā·rîm wa·’ă·p̄i·qîm yim·mā·lə·’ūn mim·me·kā — WLC · 6

When I extinguish you, I will cover the heavens and darken their stars. I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon will not give its light…

בְכַבּֽוֹתְךָ֙ וְכִסֵּיתִ֤י שָׁמַ֔יִם וְהִקְדַּרְתִּ֖י אֶת־ כֹּֽכְבֵיהֶ֑ם אֲכַסֶּ֔נּוּ שֶׁ֚מֶשׁ בֶּעָנָ֣ן וְיָרֵ֖חַ לֹא־ יָאִ֥יר אוֹרֽוֹ׃ ḇə·ḵab·bō·wṯ·ḵā wə·ḵis·sê·ṯî šā·ma·yim wə·hiq·dar·tî ’eṯ- kō·ḵə·ḇê·hem ’ă·ḵas·sen·nū meš be·‘ā·nān wə·yā·rê·aḥ lō- yā·’îr ’ō·w·rōw — WLC · 7

All the shining lights in the heavens I will darken over you, and I will bring darkness upon your land,’ declares the Lord GOD.

כָּל־ מְא֤וֹרֵי אוֹר֙ בַּשָּׁמַ֔יִם אַקְדִּירֵ֖ם עָלֶ֑יךָ וְנָתַ֤תִּי חֹ֙שֶׁךְ֙ עַֽל־ אַרְצְךָ֔ נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִֽה׃ kāl- mə·’ō·w·rê ’ō·wr baš·šā·ma·yim ’aq·dî·rêm ‘ā·le·ḵā wə·nā·ṯat·tî ḥō·šeḵ ‘al- ’ar·ṣə·ḵā nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh — WLC · 8

‘I will trouble the hearts of many peoples, when I bring about your destruction among the nations, in countries you do not know.
𐤅𐤄𐤊𐤏𐤎𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤁 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤉 𐤔𐤁𐤓𐤊 𐤁𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤌
וְהִ֨כְעַסְתִּ֔י לֵ֖ב רַבִּ֑ים עַמִּ֣ים בַּהֲבִיאִ֤י שִׁבְרְךָ֙ בַּגּוֹיִ֔ם עַל־ אֲרָצ֖וֹת אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־ יְדַעְתָּֽם׃ wə·hiḵ·‘as·tî lêḇ rab·bîm ‘am·mîm ba·hă·ḇî·’î šiḇ·rə·ḵā bag·gō·w·yim ‘al- ’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ ’ă·šer lō- yə·ḏa‘·tām — WLC · 9

I will cause many peoples to be appalled over you, and their kings will shudder in horror… because of you when I brandish My sword before them. On the day of your downfall each of them will tremble every moment for his life.’

רַבִּ֗ים עַמִּ֣ים וַהֲשִׁמּוֹתִ֨י עָלֶ֜יךָ וּמַלְכֵיהֶם֙ יִשְׂעֲר֤וּ שַׂ֔עַר עָלֶ֙יךָ֙ בְּעוֹפְפִ֥י חַרְבִּ֖י עַל־ פְּנֵיהֶ֑ם בְּי֖וֹם מַפַּלְתֶּֽךָ׃ס אִ֣ישׁ וְחָרְד֤וּ לִרְגָעִים֙ לְנַפְשׁ֔וֹ rab·bîm ‘am·mîm wa·hă·šim·mō·w·ṯî ‘ā·le·ḵā ū·mal·ḵê·hem yiś·‘ă·rū śa·‘ar ‘ā·le·ḵā bə·‘ō·wp̄·p̄î ḥar·bî ‘al- pə·nê·hem bə·yō·wm map·pal·te·ḵā ’îš wə·ḥā·rə·ḏū lir·ḡā·‘îm lə·nap̄·šōw — WLC · 10

For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘The sword of the king of Babylon will come against you!
𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤁𐤋 𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤀𐤊
כִּ֛י כֹּ֥ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה אָמַ֖ר חֶ֥רֶב מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶ֖ל תְּבוֹאֶֽךָ׃ kî kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar ḥe·reḇ me·leḵ- bā·ḇel tə·ḇō·w·’e·ḵā — WLC · 11

I will make your hordes fall by the swords of the mighty, the most ruthless of all nations. They will ravage the pride of Egypt and all her multitudes will be destroyed.

הֲמוֹנֶ֔ךָ אַפִּ֣יל בְּחַרְב֤וֹת גִּבּוֹרִים֙ עָרִיצֵ֥י כֻּלָּ֑ם גוֹיִ֖ם וְשָֽׁדְדוּ֙ אֶת־ גְּא֣וֹן מִצְרַ֔יִם כָּל־ הֲמוֹנָֽהּ׃ וְנִשְׁמַ֖ד hă·mō·w·ne·ḵā ’ap·pîl bə·ḥar·ḇō·wṯ gib·bō·w·rîm ‘ā·rî·ṣê kul·lām ḡō·w·yim wə·šā·ḏə·ḏū ’eṯ- gə·’ō·wn miṣ·ra·yim kāl- hă·mō·w·nāh wə·niš·maḏ — WLC · 12

I will slaughter all her cattle beside the abundant waters. No human foot will muddy them again, and no cattle hooves will disturb them.

וְהַֽאֲבַדְתִּי֙ אֶת־ כָּל־ בְּהֶמְתָּ֔הּ מֵעַ֖ל רַבִּ֑ים מַ֣יִם וְלֹ֨א אָדָם֙ רֶֽגֶל־ תִדְלָחֵ֤ם ע֔וֹד לֹ֥א בְּהֵמָ֖ה וּפַרְס֥וֹת תִדְלָחֵֽם׃ wə·ha·’ă·ḇaḏ·tî ’eṯ- kāl- bə·hem·tāh mê·‘al rab·bîm ma·yim wə·lō ’ā·ḏām re·ḡel- ṯiḏ·lā·ḥêm ‘ō·wḏ lō bə·hê·māh ū·p̄ar·sō·wṯ ṯiḏ·lā·ḥêm — WLC · 13

Then I will let her waters settle and will make her rivers flow like oil,’ declares the Lord GOD.

אָ֚ז מֵֽימֵיהֶ֔ם אַשְׁקִ֣יעַ וְנַהֲרוֹתָ֖ם אוֹלִ֑יךְ כַּשֶּׁ֣מֶן נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִֽה׃ ’āz mê·mê·hem ’aš·qî·a‘ wə·na·hă·rō·w·ṯām ’ō·w·lîḵ kaš·še·men nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh — WLC · 14

‘When I make the land of Egypt a desolation and empty [it] of all that filled it, when I strike down all who live there, then they will know that I am the LORD.’

בְּתִתִּי֩ אֶת־ אֶ֨רֶץ מִצְרַ֜יִם שְׁמָמָ֣ה וּנְשַׁמָּ֗ה אֶ֚רֶץ מִמְּלֹאָ֔הּ בְּהַכּוֹתִ֖י אֶת־ כָּל־ י֣וֹשְׁבֵי בָ֑הּ וְיָדְע֖וּ כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ bə·ṯit·tî ’eṯ- ’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim šə·mā·māh ū·nə·šam·māh ’e·reṣ mim·mə·lō·’āh bə·hak·kō·w·ṯî ’eṯ- kāl- yō·wō·šə·ḇê ḇāh wə·yā·ḏə·‘ū kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh — WLC · 15

This is the lament they will chant for her; the daughters of the nations will chant it -. Over Egypt… and all her multitudes they will chant it -, declares the Lord GOD.”

In the twelfth… year, on the fifteenth… day of the month,… the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

“Son of man, wail for the multitudes of Egypt, and consign her and the daughters of the mighty nations to the depths of the earth with those who descend to the Pit:

Mighty chiefs will speak from the midst of Sheol about [Egypt] and her allies: ‘They have come down and lie with the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword.’

Elam is there with all her multitudes around her grave. All of them are slain, fallen by the sword— those who went down uncircumcised to the earth below, who once spread their terror in the land of the living. They bear their disgrace with those who descend to the Pit.

Among the slain they prepare a resting place for [Elam] with all her hordes, with her graves all around her. All of them are uncircumcised, slain by the sword, although their terror was once spread in the land of the living. They bear their disgrace with those who descend to the Pit. They are placed among the slain.

They do not lie down with the fallen warriors of old, who went down to Sheol with their weapons of war, whose swords were placed under their heads, whose shields rested on their bones, although the terror of the mighty was once in the land of the living.

Edom is there, and all her kings and princes, who despite their might are laid among those slain by the sword. They lie down with the uncircumcised, with those who descend to the Pit.

All the leaders of the north and all the Sidonians are there; they went down in disgrace with the slain, despite the terror of their might. They lie uncircumcised with those slain by the sword and bear their shame with those who descend to the Pit.
