Chapter 28
A Prophecy against the Ruler of Tyre
1
And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“Son of man, tell the ruler of Tyre that this is what the Lord GOD… says: Your heart is proud, and you have said, ‘I am a god; I sit in the seat of gods in the heart of the sea.’ Yet you are a man and not a god, though you have regarded your heart as that of a god.

Behold, you are wiser than Daniel;… no secret is hidden from you!

הִנֵּ֥ה אַתָּ֖ה חָכָ֛ם מִדָּנִאֵל כָּל־ לֹ֥א סָת֖וּם עֲמָמֽוּךָ׃ hin·nêh ’at·tāh ḥā·ḵām mid·då̄·ni·ʾēl kāl- lō sā·ṯūm ‘ă·mā·mū·ḵā — WLC · 3

By your wisdom and understanding you have gained your wealth and amassed gold and silver for your treasuries.

בְּחָכְמָֽתְךָ֙ וּבִתְבוּנָ֣תְךָ֔ עָשִׂ֥יתָ לְּךָ֖ חָ֑יִל וַתַּ֛עַשׂ זָהָ֥ב וָכֶ֖סֶף בְּאוֹצְרוֹתֶֽיךָ׃ bə·ḥā·ḵə·mā·ṯə·ḵā ū·ḇiṯ·ḇū·nā·ṯə·ḵā ‘ā·śî·ṯā lə·ḵā ḥā·yil wat·ta·‘aś zā·hāḇ wā·ḵe·sep̄ bə·’ō·wṣ·rō·w·ṯe·ḵā — WLC · 4

By your great skill in trading you have increased your wealth, but your heart has grown proud because of [it].

בְּרֹ֧ב חָכְמָתְךָ֛ בִּרְכֻלָּתְךָ֖ הִרְבִּ֣יתָ חֵילֶ֑ךָ לְבָבְךָ֖ וַיִּגְבַּ֥הּ בְּחֵילֶֽךָ׃ס bə·rōḇ ḥā·ḵə·mā·ṯə·ḵā bir·ḵul·lā·ṯə·ḵā hir·bî·ṯā ḥê·le·ḵā lə·ḇā·ḇə·ḵā way·yiḡ·bah bə·ḥê·le·ḵā — WLC · 5

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Because you regard your heart as the heart of a god,

לָכֵ֕ן כֹּ֥ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה אָמַ֖ר יַ֛עַן תִּתְּךָ֥ אֶת־ לְבָבְךָ֖ כְּלֵ֥ב אֱלֹהִֽים׃ lā·ḵên kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar ya·‘an tit·tə·ḵā ’eṯ- lə·ḇā·ḇə·ḵā kə·lêḇ ’ĕ·lō·hîm — WLC · 6

- behold, I will bring foreigners against you, the most ruthless of nations. They will draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdom and will defile your splendor.
𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤆𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤑𐤉 𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤒𐤅 𐤇𐤓𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤐𐤉 𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤇𐤋𐤋𐤅 𐤉𐤐𐤏𐤕𐤊
לָכֵ֗ן הִנְנִ֨י מֵבִ֤יא זָרִ֔ים עָלֶ֙יךָ֙ עָרִיצֵ֖י גּוֹיִ֑ם וְהֵרִ֤יקוּ חַרְבוֹתָם֙ עַל־ יְפִ֣י חָכְמָתֶ֔ךָ וְחִלְּל֖וּ יִפְעָתֶֽךָ׃ lā·ḵên hin·nî mê·ḇî zā·rîm ‘ā·le·ḵā ‘ā·rî·ṣê gō·w·yim wə·hê·rî·qū ḥar·ḇō·w·ṯām ‘al- yə·p̄î ḥā·ḵə·mā·ṯe·ḵā wə·ḥil·lə·lū yip̄·‘ā·ṯe·ḵā — WLC · 7

They will bring you down to the Pit, and you will die a violent death in the heart of the seas.

יֽוֹרִד֑וּךָ לַשַּׁ֖חַת מְמוֹתֵ֥י חָלָ֖ל וָמַ֛תָּה בְּלֵ֥ב יַמִּֽים׃ yō·w·ri·ḏū·ḵā laš·ša·ḥaṯ mə·mō·w·ṯê ḥā·lāl wā·mat·tāh bə·lêḇ yam·mîm — WLC · 8

Will you still say…, ‘I am a god,’ in the presence of those who slay you? You will be only a man, not a god, in the hands of those who wound you.

הֶאָמֹ֤ר תֹּאמַר֙ אָ֔נִי אֱלֹהִ֣ים לִפְנֵ֖י הֹֽרְגֶ֑ךָ וְאַתָּ֥ה אָדָ֛ם וְלֹא־ אֵ֖ל בְּיַ֥ד מְחַלְלֶֽיךָ׃ he·’ā·mōr tō·mar ’ā·nî ’ĕ·lō·hîm lip̄·nê hō·rə·ḡe·ḵā wə·’at·tāh ’ā·ḏām wə·lō- ’êl bə·yaḏ mə·ḥal·le·ḵā — WLC · 9

You will die the death of the uncircumcised at the hands of foreigners. For I have spoken, declares the Lord GOD.”

A Lament for the King of Tyre

Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

“Son of man, take up a lament for the king of Tyre and tell him that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤔𐤀 𐤒𐤉𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤑𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤋𐤅 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤇𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤕𐤊𐤍𐤉𐤕 𐤌𐤋𐤀 𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤋𐤉𐤋 𐤉𐤐𐤉
בֶּן־ אָדָ֕ם שָׂ֥א קִינָ֖ה עַל־ מֶ֣לֶךְ צ֑וֹר וְאָמַ֣רְתָּ לּ֗וֹ כֹּ֤ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה אָמַר֙ אַתָּה֙ חוֹתֵ֣ם תָּכְנִ֔ית מָלֵ֥א חָכְמָ֖ה וּכְלִ֥יל יֹֽפִי׃ ben- ’ā·ḏām śā qî·nāh ‘al- me·leḵ ṣō·wr wə·’ā·mar·tā lōw kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar ’at·tāh ḥō·w·ṯêm tā·ḵə·nîṯ mā·lê ḥāḵ·māh ū·ḵə·lîl yō·p̄î — WLC · 12

You were in Eden, the garden of God. Every kind of precious stone adorned you: ruby, topaz, and diamond, beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and emerald. Your mountings and settings were crafted in gold, prepared on the day of your creation.

הָיִ֗יתָ בְּעֵ֨דֶן גַּן־ אֱלֹהִ֜ים כָּל־ יְקָרָ֤ה אֶ֨בֶן מְסֻכָתֶ֙ךָ֙ אֹ֣דֶם פִּטְדָ֞ה וְיָהֲלֹ֗ם תַּרְשִׁ֥ישׁ שֹׁ֙הַם֙ וְיָ֣שְׁפֵ֔ה סַפִּ֣יר נֹ֔פֶךְ וּבָרְקַ֖ת וּנְקָבֶ֙יךָ֙ בָּ֔ךְ תֻּפֶּ֤יךָ מְלֶ֨אכֶת וְזָהָ֑ב כּוֹנָֽנוּ׃ בְּי֥וֹם הִבָּרַאֲךָ֖ hā·yî·ṯā bə·‘ê·ḏen gan- ’ĕ·lō·hîm kāl- yə·qā·rāh ’e·ḇen mə·su·ḵā·ṯe·ḵā ’ō·ḏem piṭ·ḏāh wə·yā·hă·lōm tar·šîš šō·ham wə·yā·šə·p̄êh sap·pîr nō·p̄eḵ ū·ḇā·rə·qaṯ ū·nə·qā·ḇe·ḵā bāḵ tup·pe·ḵā mə·le·ḵeṯ wə·zā·hāḇ kō·w·nā·nū bə·yō·wm hib·bā·ra·’ă·ḵā — WLC · 13

You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for I had ordained you. You were on the holy mountain of God; you walked among the fiery stones.

אַ֨תְּ־ מִמְשַׁ֖ח הַסּוֹכֵ֑ךְ כְּר֔וּב וּנְתַתִּ֗יךָ הָיִ֔יתָ קֹ֤דֶשׁ בְּהַ֨ר אֱלֹהִים֙ הִתְהַלָּֽכְתָּ׃ בְּת֥וֹךְ אֵ֖שׁ אַבְנֵי־ ’at- mim·šaḥ has·sō·w·ḵêḵ kə·rūḇ ū·nə·ṯat·tî·ḵā hā·yî·ṯā qō·ḏeš bə·har ’ĕ·lō·hîm hiṯ·hal·lā·ḵə·tā bə·ṯō·wḵ ’êš ’aḇ·nê- — WLC · 14

From the day you were created you were blameless in your ways— until wickedness was found in you.

מִיּ֖וֹם הִבָּֽרְאָ֑ךְ אַתָּה֙ תָּמִ֤ים בִּדְרָכֶ֔יךָ עַד־ עַוְלָ֖תָה נִמְצָ֥א בָּֽךְ׃ mî·yō·wm hib·bā·rə·’āḵ ’at·tāh tā·mîm biḏ·rā·ḵe·ḵā ‘aḏ- ‘aw·lā·ṯāh nim·ṣā bāḵ — WLC · 15

By the vastness of your trade, you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mountain of God, and I banished you, O guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones.

בְּרֹ֣ב רְכֻלָּתְךָ֗ תוֹכְךָ֛ מָל֧וּ חָמָ֖ס וַֽתֶּחֱטָ֑א וָאֶחַלֶּלְךָ֩ מֵהַ֨ר אֱלֹהִ֤ים וָֽאַבֶּדְךָ֙ הַסֹּכֵ֔ךְ כְּר֣וּב מִתּ֖וֹךְ אֵֽשׁ׃ אַבְנֵי־ bə·rōḇ rə·ḵul·lā·ṯə·ḵā ṯō·wḵ·ḵā mā·lū ḥā·mās wat·te·ḥĕ·ṭā wā·’e·ḥal·lel·ḵā mê·har ’ĕ·lō·hîm wā·’ab·beḏ·ḵā has·sō·ḵêḵ kə·rūḇ mit·tō·wḵ ’êš ’aḇ·nê- — WLC · 16

Your heart grew proud of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor; so I cast you to the earth; I made you a spectacle before kings.

לִבְּךָ֙ גָּבַ֤הּ בְּיָפְיֶ֔ךָ שִׁחַ֥תָּ חָכְמָתְךָ֖ עַל־ יִפְעָתֶ֑ךָ הִשְׁלַכְתִּ֗יךָ עַל־ אֶ֣רֶץ נְתַתִּ֖יךָ לְרַ֥אֲוָה בָֽךְ׃ לִפְנֵ֧י מְלָכִ֛ים lib·bə·ḵā gā·ḇah bə·yā·p̄ə·ye·ḵā ši·ḥa·tā ḥā·ḵə·mā·ṯə·ḵā ‘al- yip̄·‘ā·ṯe·ḵā hiš·laḵ·tî·ḵā ‘al- ’e·reṣ nə·ṯat·tî·ḵā lə·ra·’ă·wāh ḇāḵ lip̄·nê mə·lā·ḵîm — WLC · 17

By the multitude of your iniquities and the dishonesty of your trading you have profaned your sanctuaries. So I made fire come from within you, and it consumed you. I reduced you to ashes on the ground in the eyes of all who saw you.

מֵרֹ֣ב עֲוֺנֶ֗יךָ בְּעֶ֙וֶל֙ רְכֻלָּ֣תְךָ֔ חִלַּ֖לְתָּ מִקְדָּשֶׁ֑יךָ אֵ֤שׁ וָֽאוֹצִא־ מִתּֽוֹכְךָ֙ הִ֣יא אֲכָלַ֔תְךָ וָאֶתֶּנְךָ֤ לְאֵ֙פֶר֙ עַל־ הָאָ֔רֶץ לְעֵינֵ֖י כָּל־ רֹאֶֽיךָ׃ mê·rōḇ ‘ă·wō·ne·ḵā bə·‘e·wel rə·ḵul·lā·ṯə·ḵā ḥil·lal·tā miq·dā·še·ḵā ’êš wā·’ō·w·ṣi- mit·tō·wḵ·ḵā hî ’ă·ḵā·laṯ·ḵā wā·’et·ten·ḵā lə·’ê·p̄er ‘al- hā·’ā·reṣ lə·‘ê·nê kāl- rō·’e·ḵā — WLC · 18

All the nations who know you are appalled over you. You have come to a horrible end and [will] [be] no more…’”

A Prophecy against Sidon

Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 20

“Son of man, set your face against Sidon and prophesy against her.
𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤑𐤉𐤃𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄
בֶּן־ אָדָ֕ם שִׂ֥ים פָּנֶ֖יךָ אֶל־ צִיד֑וֹן וְהִנָּבֵ֖א עָלֶֽיהָ׃ ben- ’ā·ḏām śîm pā·ne·ḵā ’el- ṣî·ḏō·wn wə·hin·nā·ḇê ‘ā·le·hā — WLC · 21

And you are to declare that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I am against you, O Sidon, and I will be glorified within you. They will know that I am the LORD when I execute judgments against her and demonstrate My holiness through her.

I will send a plague against her and shed blood in her streets; the slain will fall within her, while the sword is against her on every side. Then they will know that I am the LORD.

For the people of Israel will no longer face a pricking brier or a painful thorn from all around them who treat them with contempt -. Then they will know that I am the Lord GOD.’

The Restoration of Israel

This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘When I gather the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they have been scattered I will show Myself holy among them in the sight of the nations. Then they will dwell in their own land, which I have given to My servant Jacob.

כֹּֽה־ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִה֒ אָמַר֮ בְּקַבְּצִ֣י׀ אֶת־ בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל מִן־ הָֽעַמִּים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נָפֹ֣צוּ בָ֔ם וְנִקְדַּ֥שְׁתִּי בָ֖ם לְעֵינֵ֣י הַגּוֹיִ֑ם וְיָֽשְׁבוּ֙ עַל־ אַדְמָתָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָתַ֖תִּי לְעַבְדִּ֥י לְיַעֲקֹֽב׃ kōh- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar bə·qab·bə·ṣî ’eṯ- bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl min- hā·‘am·mîm ’ă·šer nā·p̄ō·ṣū ḇām wə·niq·daš·tî ḇām lə·‘ê·nê hag·gō·w·yim wə·yā·šə·ḇū ‘al- ’aḏ·mā·ṯām ’ă·šer nā·ṯat·tî lə·‘aḇ·dî lə·ya·‘ă·qōḇ — WLC · 25

And there they will dwell… securely, build houses, and plant vineyards. They will dwell securely when I execute judgments against all [those] around them who treat them with contempt -. Then they will know that I am the LORD their God.’”
