Chapter 26
A Prophecy against Tyre
1
In the eleventh [month of the twelfth]… year, on the first day of the month,… the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

בְּעַשְׁתֵּֽי־ עֶשְׂרֵ֥ה שָׁנָ֖ה בְּאֶחָ֣ד לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ הָיָ֥ה דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֛י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ bə·‘aš·tê- ‘eś·rêh šā·nāh bə·’e·ḥāḏ la·ḥō·ḏeš hā·yāh ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“Son of man, because Tyre has said of Jerusalem, ‘Aha! The gate to the nations is broken; it has swung open to me; now that she lies in ruins I will be filled,’

בֶּן־ אָדָ֗ם יַ֠עַן אֲשֶׁר־ צֹּ֤ר אָ֨מְרָה עַל־ יְרוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ הֶאָ֔ח דַּלְת֥וֹת הָעַמִּ֖ים נִשְׁבְּרָ֛ה נָסֵ֣בָּה אֵלָ֑י הָחֳרָֽבָה׃ אִמָּלְאָ֖ה ben- ’ā·ḏām ya·‘an ’ă·šer- ṣōr ’ā·mə·rāh ‘al- yə·rū·šā·lim he·’āḥ dal·ṯō·wṯ hā·‘am·mîm niš·bə·rāh nā·sêb·bāh ’ê·lāy hā·ḥo·rā·ḇāh ’im·mā·lə·’āh — WLC · 2

therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, O Tyre, [I am] against you, and I will raise up many nations against you, as the sea brings up its waves.
𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤑𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤂𐤋𐤉𐤅
לָכֵ֗ן כֹּ֤ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה אָמַר֙ הִנְנִ֥י צֹ֑ר עָלַ֖יִךְ וְהַעֲלֵיתִ֤י רַבִּ֔ים גּוֹיִ֣ם עָלַ֙יִךְ֙ הַיָּ֖ם כְּהַעֲל֥וֹת לְגַלָּֽיו׃ lā·ḵên kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar hin·nî ṣōr ‘ā·la·yiḵ wə·ha·‘ă·lê·ṯî rab·bîm gō·w·yim ‘ā·la·yiḵ hay·yām kə·ha·‘ă·lō·wṯ lə·ḡal·lāw — WLC · 3

They will destroy the walls of Tyre and demolish her towers. I will scrape the soil from her and make her a bare rock.

וְשִׁחֲת֞וּ חֹמ֣וֹת צֹ֗ר וְהָֽרְסוּ֙ מִגְדָּלֶ֔יהָ וְסִֽחֵיתִ֥י עֲפָרָ֖הּ מִמֶּ֑נָּה וְנָתַתִּ֥י אוֹתָ֖הּ לִצְחִ֥יחַ סָֽלַע׃ wə·ši·ḥă·ṯū ḥō·mō·wṯ ṣōr wə·hā·rə·sū miḡ·dā·le·hā wə·si·ḥê·ṯî ‘ă·p̄ā·rāh mim·men·nāh wə·nā·ṯat·tî ’ō·w·ṯāh liṣ·ḥî·aḥ sā·la‘ — WLC · 4

She will become a place to spread nets in the sea, for I have spoken, declares the Lord GOD. She will become plunder for the nations,

תִּֽהְיֶה֙ בְּת֣וֹךְ מִשְׁטַ֨ח חֲרָמִ֤ים הַיָּ֔ם כִּ֚י אֲנִ֣י דִבַּ֔רְתִּי נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה וְהָיְתָ֥ה לְבַ֖ז לַגּוֹיִֽם׃ tih·yeh bə·ṯō·wḵ miš·ṭaḥ ḥă·rā·mîm hay·yām kî ’ă·nî ḏib·bar·tî nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh wə·hā·yə·ṯāh lə·ḇaz lag·gō·w·yim — WLC · 5

and the villages on her mainland will be slain by the sword. Then they will know that I am the LORD.’

וּבְנוֹתֶ֙יהָ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה תֵּהָרַ֑גְנָה בַּחֶ֖רֶב וְיָדְע֖וּ כִּי־ אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃פ ū·ḇə·nō·w·ṯe·hā ’ă·šer baś·śā·ḏeh tê·hā·raḡ·nāh ba·ḥe·reḇ wə·yā·ḏə·‘ū kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh — WLC · 6

For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I will bring against Tyre from the north Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, king of kings, with horses and chariots, with cavalry and a great company of troops.

כִּ֣י כֹ֤ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה אָמַר֙ הִנְנִ֧י מֵבִ֣יא אֶל־ צֹ֗ר מִצָּפ֖וֹן נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֧ר מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶ֛ל מֶ֣לֶךְ מְלָכִ֑ים בְּס֛וּס וּבְרֶ֥כֶב וּבְפָרָשִׁ֖ים רָֽב׃ וְקָהָ֥ל וְעַם־ kî ḵōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar hin·nî mê·ḇî ’el- ṣōr miṣ·ṣā·p̄ō·wn nə·ḇū·ḵaḏ·reṣ·ṣar me·leḵ- bā·ḇel me·leḵ mə·lā·ḵîm bə·sūs ū·ḇə·re·ḵeḇ ū·ḇə·p̄ā·rā·šîm rāḇ wə·qā·hāl wə·‘am- — WLC · 7

He will slaughter the villages of your mainland with the sword; he will set up siege works against you, build a ramp to your walls…, and raise his shields against you.

יַהֲרֹ֑ג בְּנוֹתַ֥יִךְ בַּשָּׂדֶ֖ה בַּחֶ֣רֶב וְנָתַ֨ן דָּיֵ֗ק עָלַ֜יִךְ וְשָׁפַ֤ךְ סֹֽלְלָ֔ה עָלַ֙יִךְ֙ וְהֵקִ֥ים צִנָּֽה׃ עָלַ֖יִךְ ya·hă·rōḡ bə·nō·w·ṯa·yiḵ baś·śā·ḏeh ba·ḥe·reḇ wə·nā·ṯan dā·yêq ‘ā·la·yiḵ wə·šā·p̄aḵ sō·lə·lāh ‘ā·la·yiḵ wə·hê·qîm ṣin·nāh ‘ā·la·yiḵ — WLC · 8

He will direct the blows of his battering rams against your walls and tear down your towers with his axes.

יִתֵּ֖ן וּמְחִ֣י קָֽבָלּ֔וֹ בְּחֹֽמוֹתָ֑יִךְ יִתֹּ֖ץ וּמִ֨גְדְּלֹתַ֔יִךְ בְּחַרְבוֹתָֽיו׃ yit·tên ū·mə·ḥî qā·ḇāl·lōw bə·ḥō·mō·w·ṯā·yiḵ yit·tōṣ ū·miḡ·də·lō·ṯa·yiḵ bə·ḥar·ḇō·w·ṯāw — WLC · 9

His multitude of horses will cover you in their dust. When he enters your gates as an army entering a breached city, your walls will shake from the noise of cavalry, wagons, and chariots.

מִשִּׁפְעַ֥ת סוּסָ֖יו יְכַסֵּ֣ךְ אֲבָקָ֑ם בְּבֹאוֹ֙ בִּשְׁעָרַ֔יִךְ כִּמְבוֹאֵ֖י מְבֻקָּעָֽה׃ עִ֥יר חֽוֹמוֹתַ֔יִךְ תִּרְעַ֙שְׁנָה֙ מִקּוֹל֩ פָּרַ֨שׁ וְגַלְגַּ֜ל וָרֶ֗כֶב miš·šip̄·‘aṯ sū·sāw yə·ḵas·sêḵ ’ă·ḇā·qām bə·ḇō·’ōw biš·‘ā·ra·yiḵ kim·ḇō·w·’ê mə·ḇuq·qā·‘āh ‘îr ḥō·w·mō·w·ṯa·yiḵ tir·‘aš·nāh miq·qō·wl pā·raš wə·ḡal·gal wā·re·ḵeḇ — WLC · 10

The hooves of his horses will trample all your streets. He will slaughter your people with the sword, and your mighty pillars will fall to the ground.

בְּפַרְס֣וֹת סוּסָ֔יו יִרְמֹ֖ס אֶת־ כָּל־ חֽוּצוֹתָ֑יִךְ יַהֲרֹ֔ג עַמֵּךְ֙ בַּחֶ֣רֶב עֻזֵּ֖ךְ וּמַצְּב֥וֹת תֵּרֵֽד׃ לָאָ֥רֶץ bə·p̄ar·sō·wṯ sū·sāw yir·mōs ’eṯ- kāl- ḥū·ṣō·w·ṯā·yiḵ ya·hă·rōḡ ‘am·mêḵ ba·ḥe·reḇ ‘uz·zêḵ ū·maṣ·ṣə·ḇō·wṯ tê·rêḏ lā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 11

They will plunder your wealth and pillage your merchandise. They will demolish your walls, tear down your beautiful homes, and throw your stones and timber and soil into the water.

וְשָׁלְל֣וּ חֵילֵ֗ךְ וּבָֽזְזוּ֙ רְכֻלָּתֵ֔ךְ וְהָֽרְסוּ֙ חוֹמוֹתַ֔יִךְ יִתֹּ֑צוּ חֶמְדָּתֵ֖ךְ וּבָתֵּ֥י יָשִֽׂימוּ׃ וַאֲבָנַ֤יִךְ וְעֵצַ֙יִךְ֙ וַֽעֲפָרֵ֔ךְ בְּת֥וֹךְ מַ֖יִם wə·šā·lə·lū ḥê·lêḵ ū·ḇā·zə·zū rə·ḵul·lā·ṯêḵ wə·hā·rə·sū ḥō·w·mō·w·ṯa·yiḵ yit·tō·ṣū ḥem·dā·ṯêḵ ū·ḇāt·tê yā·śî·mū wa·’ă·ḇā·na·yiḵ wə·‘ê·ṣa·yiḵ wa·‘ă·p̄ā·rêḵ bə·ṯō·wḵ ma·yim — WLC · 12

So I will silence the sound of your songs, and the music of your lyres will no longer be heard.

וְהִשְׁבַּתִּ֖י הֲמ֣וֹן שִׁירָ֑יִךְ וְק֣וֹל כִּנּוֹרַ֔יִךְ לֹ֥א עֽוֹד׃ יִשָּׁמַ֖ע wə·hiš·bat·tî hă·mō·wn šî·rā·yiḵ wə·qō·wl kin·nō·w·ra·yiḵ lō ‘ō·wḏ yiš·šā·ma‘ — WLC · 13

I will make you a bare rock, and you will become a place to spread the fishing nets. You will never… be rebuilt, for I, the LORD, have spoken, declares the Lord GOD.’

וּנְתַתִּ֞יךְ לִצְחִ֣יחַ סֶ֗לַע תִּֽהְיֶ֔ה מִשְׁטַ֤ח חֲרָמִים֙ לֹ֥א ע֑וֹד תִבָּנֶ֖ה כִּ֣י אֲנִ֤י יְהוִֽה׃ס דִּבַּ֔רְתִּי נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוָה֙ ū·nə·ṯat·tîḵ liṣ·ḥî·aḥ se·la‘ tih·yeh miš·ṭaḥ ḥă·rā·mîm lō ‘ō·wḏ ṯib·bā·neh kî ’ă·nî Yah·weh dib·bar·tî nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh — WLC · 14

This is what the Lord GOD says to Tyre: ‘Will not the coastlands quake at the sound of your downfall, when the wounded… groan at the slaughter in your midst?
𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤑𐤅𐤓 𐤄𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤓𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤌𐤐𐤋𐤕𐤊 𐤇𐤋𐤋 𐤁𐤄𐤓𐤂 𐤁𐤀𐤍𐤒 𐤄𐤓𐤂 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤊
כֹּ֥ה אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִ֖ה אָמַ֛ר לְצ֑וֹר הֲלֹ֣א׀ הָאִיִּֽים׃ יִרְעֲשׁ֖וּ מִקּ֣וֹל מַפַּלְתֵּ֗ךְ חָלָ֜ל בֵּהָ֤רֵֽג בֶּאֱנֹ֨ק הֶ֙רֶג֙ בְּתוֹכֵ֔ךְ kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar lə·ṣō·wr hă·lō hā·’î·yîm yir·‘ă·šū miq·qō·wl map·pal·têḵ ḥā·lāl bê·hā·rêḡ be·’ĕ·nōq he·reḡ bə·ṯō·w·ḵêḵ — WLC · 15

All the princes of the sea will descend from their thrones, remove their robes, and strip off their embroidered garments. Clothed with terror, they will sit on the ground, trembling [every] moment, appalled over you.

כֹּ֚ל נְשִׂיאֵ֣י הַיָּ֔ם וְֽיָרְד֞וּ מֵעַ֣ל כִּסְאוֹתָ֗ם וְהֵסִ֙ירוּ֙ אֶת־ מְעִ֣ילֵיהֶ֔ם וְאֶת־ יִפְשֹׁ֑טוּ רִקְמָתָ֖ם בִּגְדֵ֥י יִלְבָּ֙שׁוּ֙ חֲרָד֤וֹת׀ יֵשֵׁ֔בוּ עַל־ הָאָ֣רֶץ וְחָֽרְדוּ֙ לִרְגָעִ֔ים וְשָׁמְמ֖וּ עָלָֽיִךְ׃ kōl nə·śî·’ê hay·yām wə·yā·rə·ḏū mê·‘al kis·’ō·w·ṯām wə·hê·sî·rū ’eṯ- mə·‘î·lê·hem wə·’eṯ- yip̄·šō·ṭū riq·mā·ṯām biḡ·ḏê yil·bā·šū ḥă·rā·ḏō·wṯ yê·šê·ḇū ‘al- hā·’ā·reṣ wə·ḥā·rə·ḏū lir·ḡā·‘îm wə·šā·mə·mū ‘ā·lā·yiḵ — WLC · 16

Then they will lament… for you, saying -, “How you have perished, O city of renown inhabited by seafaring [men]— she who was powerful on the sea, along with her people, who imposed terror on all peoples!

For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘When I make you a desolate city like other deserted… cities, [and] when I raise up the deep against you so that the mighty waters cover you,

then I will bring you down with those who descend to the Pit, to the people of antiquity. I will make you dwell in the earth below like the ancient ruins, with those who descend to the Pit, so that you will no longer be inhabited or set in splendor in the land of the living.

I will make you an object of horror, and you will be no more. You will be sought, but will never… be found -,’ declares the Lord GOD.”
