Chapter 24
The Parable of the Cooking Pot
1
In the ninth year, on the tenth day of the tenth month, the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

“Son of man, write down… - today’s date, for on this very day the king of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem - -.

Now speak a parable… to this rebellious house and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Put the pot on the fire; put it on and pour in the water.

וּמְשֹׁ֤ל מָשָׁ֔ל אֶל־ הַמֶּ֙רִי֙ בֵּית־ וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם כֹּ֥ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה אָמַ֖ר הַסִּיר֙ שְׁפֹ֤ת שְׁפֹ֔ת וְגַם־ יְצֹ֥ק בּ֖וֹ מָֽיִם׃ ū·mə·šōl mā·šāl ’el- ham·me·rî bêṯ- wə·’ā·mar·tā ’ă·lê·hem kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar has·sîr šə·p̄ōṯ šə·p̄ōṯ wə·ḡam- yə·ṣōq bōw mā·yim — WLC · 3

Put in the pieces of meat, every good piece— thigh and shoulder— fill it with choice bones.

אֱסֹ֤ף נְתָחֶ֙יהָ֙ אֵלֶ֔יהָ כָּל־ ט֖וֹב נֵ֥תַח יָרֵ֣ךְ וְכָתֵ֑ף מַלֵּֽא׃ מִבְחַ֥ר עֲצָמִ֖ים ’ĕ·sōp̄ nə·ṯā·ḥe·hā ’ê·le·hā kāl- ṭō·wḇ nê·ṯaḥ yā·rêḵ wə·ḵā·ṯêp̄ mal·lê miḇ·ḥar ‘ă·ṣā·mîm — WLC · 4

Take the choicest of the flock and pile the fuel beneath it. Bring it to a boil… and cook the bones in it.’

לָק֔וֹחַ מִבְחַ֤ר הַצֹּאן֙ וְגַ֛ם דּ֥וּר הָעֲצָמִ֖ים תַּחְתֶּ֑יהָ רְתָחֶ֔יהָ רַתַּ֣ח גַּם־ בָּשְׁל֥וּ עֲצָמֶ֖יהָ בְּתוֹכָֽהּ׃ס lā·qō·w·aḥ miḇ·ḥar haṣ·ṣōn wə·ḡam dūr hā·‘ă·ṣā·mîm taḥ·te·hā rə·ṯā·ḥe·hā rat·taḥ gam- bā·šə·lū ‘ă·ṣā·me·hā bə·ṯō·w·ḵāh — WLC · 5

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Woe to the city of bloodshed, to the pot vvv now rusted whose rust will not come off…! Empty it piece by piece; cast no lots for its contents.

לָכֵ֞ן כֹּה־ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהֹוִ֗ה אָמַ֣ר׀ אוֹי֮ עִ֣יר הַדָּמִים֒ סִ֚יר אֲשֶׁ֣ר חֶלְאָתָ֣ה בָ֔הּ וְחֶ֨לְאָתָ֔הּ לֹ֥א יָצְאָ֖ה מִמֶּ֑נָּה הוֹצִיאָ֔הּ לִנְתָחֶ֤יהָ לִנְתָחֶ֙יהָ֙ נָפַ֥ל לֹא־ גּוֹרָֽל׃ עָלֶ֖יהָ lā·ḵên kōh- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar ’ō·w ‘îr had·dā·mîm sîr ’ă·šer ḥel·’ā·ṯāh ḇāh wə·ḥel·’ā·ṯāh lō yā·ṣə·’āh mim·men·nāh hō·w·ṣî·’āh lin·ṯā·ḥe·hā lin·ṯā·ḥe·hā nā·p̄al lō- gō·w·rāl ‘ā·le·hā — WLC · 6

For the blood she shed is still within her; she poured it out on the bare rock; she did not pour it on the ground to cover… it with dust.

כִּ֤י דָמָהּ֙ הָיָ֔ה בְּתוֹכָ֣הּ שָׂמָ֑תְהוּ עַל־ צְחִ֥יחַ סֶ֖לַע לֹ֤א שְׁפָכַ֙תְהוּ֙ עַל־ הָאָ֔רֶץ לְכַסּ֥וֹת עָלָ֖יו עָפָֽר׃ kî ḏā·māh hā·yāh bə·ṯō·w·ḵāh śā·mā·ṯə·hū ‘al- ṣə·ḥî·aḥ se·la‘ lō šə·p̄ā·ḵaṯ·hū ‘al- hā·’ā·reṣ lə·ḵas·sō·wṯ ‘ā·lāw ‘ā·p̄ār — WLC · 7

In order to stir up wrath and take vengeance…, I have placed her blood on the bare rock, so that it would not be covered.’

לְהַעֲל֤וֹת חֵמָה֙ לִנְקֹ֣ם נָקָ֔ם נָתַ֥תִּי אֶת־ דָּמָ֖הּ עַל־ צְחִ֣יחַ סָ֑לַע לְבִלְתִּ֖י הִכָּסֽוֹת׃פ lə·ha·‘ă·lō·wṯ ḥê·māh lin·qōm nā·qām nā·ṯat·tî ’eṯ- dā·māh ‘al- ṣə·ḥî·aḥ sā·la‘ lə·ḇil·tî hik·kā·sō·wṯ — WLC · 8

Yes, this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Woe to the city of bloodshed!… I, too, will pile the kindling high.

לָכֵ֗ן כֹּ֤ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה אָמַר֙ א֖וֹי עִ֣יר הַדָּמִ֑ים גַּם־ אֲנִ֖י הַמְּדוּרָֽה׃ אַגְדִּ֥יל lā·ḵên kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar ’ō·w ‘îr had·dā·mîm gam- ’ă·nî ham·mə·ḏū·rāh ’aḡ·dîl — WLC · 9

Pile on the logs and kindle the fire; cook the meat well and mix in the spices; let the bones be burned.

הַרְבֵּ֤ה הָעֵצִים֙ הַדְלֵ֣ק הָאֵ֔שׁ הָתֵ֖ם הַבָּשָׂ֑ר וְהַרְקַח֙ הַמֶּרְקָחָ֔ה וְהָעֲצָמ֖וֹת יֵחָֽרוּ׃ har·bêh hā·‘ê·ṣîm haḏ·lêq hā·’êš hā·ṯêm hab·bā·śār wə·har·qaḥ ham·mer·qā·ḥāh wə·hā·‘ă·ṣā·mō·wṯ yê·ḥā·rū — WLC · 10

Set the empty pot on its coals until it becomes hot and its copper glows. Then its impurity will melt within; its rust will be consumed.

וְהַעֲמִידֶ֥הָ רֵקָ֑ה עַל־ גֶּחָלֶ֖יהָ לְמַ֨עַן תֵּחַ֜ם נְחֻשְׁתָּ֗הּ וְחָ֣רָה טֻמְאָתָ֔הּ וְנִתְּכָ֤ה בְתוֹכָהּ֙ חֶלְאָתָֽהּ׃ תִּתֻּ֖ם wə·ha·‘ă·mî·ḏe·hā rê·qāh ‘al- ge·ḥā·le·hā lə·ma·‘an tê·ḥam nə·ḥuš·tāh wə·ḥā·rāh ṭum·’ā·ṯāh wə·nit·tə·ḵāh ḇə·ṯō·w·ḵāh ḥel·’ā·ṯāh tit·tum — WLC · 11

It has frustrated every effort; its thick rust has not been removed…, even by the fire -.

הֶלְאָ֑ת תְּאֻנִ֖ים רַבַּ֣ת חֶלְאָתָ֔הּ וְלֹֽא־ תֵצֵ֤א מִמֶּ֙נָּה֙ בְּאֵ֖שׁ חֶלְאָתָֽהּ׃ hel·’āṯ tə·’u·nîm rab·baṯ ḥel·’ā·ṯāh wə·lō- ṯê·ṣê mim·men·nāh bə·’êš ḥel·’ā·ṯāh — WLC · 12

Because of the indecency of your uncleanness I tried to cleanse you, but you would not be purified from your filthiness. You will not be pure again until My wrath against you has subsided.

יַ֤עַן זִמָּ֑ה בְּטֻמְאָתֵ֖ךְ טִֽהַרְתִּיךְ֙ וְלֹ֣א טָהַ֔רְתְּ מִטֻּמְאָתֵךְ֙ לֹ֣א תִטְהֲרִי־ ע֔וֹד עַד־ אֶת־ חֲמָתִ֖י בָּֽךְ׃ הֲנִיחִ֥י ya·‘an zim·māh bə·ṭum·’ā·ṯêḵ ṭi·har·tîḵ wə·lō ṭā·hart miṭ·ṭum·’ā·ṯêḵ lō ṯiṭ·hă·rî- ‘ō·wḏ ‘aḏ- ’eṯ- ḥă·mā·ṯî bāḵ hă·nî·ḥî — WLC · 13

I, the LORD, have spoken; [the time] is coming, and I will act. I will not refrain [or] show pity, nor will I relent. I will judge you according to your ways and deeds,’ declares the Lord GOD.”

אֲנִ֨י יְהוָ֤ה דִּבַּ֙רְתִּי֙ בָּאָ֣ה וְעָשִׂ֔יתִי לֹֽא־ אֶפְרַ֥ע וְלֹא־ אָח֖וּס וְלֹ֣א אֶנָּחֵ֑ם שְׁפָט֔וּךְ כִּדְרָכַ֤יִךְ וְכַעֲלִילוֹתַ֙יִךְ֙ נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהֹוִֽה׃פ ’ă·nî Yah·weh dib·bar·tî bā·’āh wə·‘ā·śî·ṯî lō- ’ep̄·ra‘ wə·lō- ’ā·ḥūs wə·lō ’en·nā·ḥêm šə·p̄ā·ṭūḵ kiḏ·rā·ḵa·yiḵ wə·ḵa·‘ă·lî·lō·w·ṯa·yiḵ nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh — WLC · 14
Ezekiel’s Wife Dies

Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

“Son of man, behold, I am about to take away the desire of your eyes… with a fatal blow. But you must not mourn… or weep… or let your tears flow.

בֶּן־ אָדָ֕ם הִנְנִ֨י לֹקֵ֧חַ מַחְמַ֥ד עֵינֶ֖יךָ מִמְּךָ֛ אֶת־ בְּמַגֵּפָ֑ה וְלֹ֤א תִסְפֹּד֙ וְלֹ֣א תִבְכֶּ֔ה וְל֥וֹא דִּמְעָתֶֽךָ׃ תָב֖וֹא ben- ’ā·ḏām hin·nî lō·qê·aḥ maḥ·maḏ ‘ê·ne·ḵā mim·mə·ḵā ’eṯ- bə·mag·gê·p̄āh wə·lō ṯis·pōḏ wə·lō ṯiḇ·keh wə·lō·w dim·‘ā·ṯe·ḵā ṯā·ḇō·w — WLC · 16

Groan quietly; do not vvv mourn for the dead. Put on your turban and strap your sandals on your feet; do not cover… [your] lips or eat the bread of mourners…”

הֵאָנֵ֣ק׀ דֹּ֗ם לֹֽא־ תַֽעֲשֶׂ֔ה אֵ֣בֶל מֵתִים֙ חֲב֣וֹשׁ עָלֶ֔יךָ פְאֵֽרְךָ֙ תָּשִׂ֣ים וּנְעָלֶ֖יךָ בְּרַגְלֶ֑יךָ וְלֹ֤א תַעְטֶה֙ עַל־ שָׂפָ֔ם תֹאכֵֽל׃ וְלֶ֥חֶם אֲנָשִׁ֖ים לֹ֥א hê·’ā·nêq dōm lō- ṯa·‘ă·śeh ’ê·ḇel mê·ṯîm ḥă·ḇō·wōš ‘ā·le·ḵā p̄ə·’ê·rə·ḵā tā·śîm ū·nə·‘ā·le·ḵā bə·raḡ·le·ḵā wə·lō ṯa‘·ṭeh ‘al- śā·p̄ām ṯō·ḵêl wə·le·ḥem ’ă·nā·šîm lō — WLC · 17

So I spoke to the people in the morning, and in the evening my wife died. And the next morning I did as I had been commanded.

וָאֲדַבֵּ֤ר אֶל־ הָעָם֙ בַּבֹּ֔קֶר בָּעָ֑רֶב אִשְׁתִּ֖י וַתָּ֥מָת בַּבֹּ֖קֶר וָאַ֥עַשׂ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר צֻוֵּֽיתִי׃ wā·’ă·ḏab·bêr ’el- hā·‘ām bab·bō·qer bā·‘ā·reḇ ’iš·tî wat·tā·māṯ bab·bō·qer wā·’a·‘aś ka·’ă·šer ṣuw·wê·ṯî — WLC · 18

Then the people asked me,… “Won’t you tell us what these [things]… you are doing mean to us?”

הָעָ֑ם וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ אֵלַ֖י הֲלֹֽא־ תַגִּ֥יד לָ֙נוּ֙ מָה־ אֵ֣לֶּה כִּ֥י אַתָּ֖ה עֹשֶֽׂה׃ לָּ֔נוּ hā·‘ām way·yō·mə·rū ’ê·lay hă·lō- ṯag·gîḏ lā·nū māh- ’êl·leh kî ’at·tāh ‘ō·śeh lā·nū — WLC · 19

So I answered them, “The word of the LORD came to me, saying:
𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
וָאֹמַ֖ר אֲלֵיהֶ֑ם דְּבַ֨ר־ יְהוָ֔ה הָיָ֥ה אֵלַ֖י לֵאמֹֽר׃ wā·’ō·mar ’ă·lê·hem də·ḇar- Yah·weh hā·yāh ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 20

Tell the house of Israel that this is what the Lord GOD… says: ‘I am about to desecrate My sanctuary, the pride of your power, the desire of your eyes, and the delight of your soul. And the sons and daughters you left behind will fall by the sword.’

אֱמֹ֣ר׀ לְבֵ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל כֹּֽה־ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִה֒ הִנְנִ֨י אָמַר֮ מְחַלֵּ֤ל אֶת־ מִקְדָּשִׁי֙ גְּא֣וֹן עֻזְּכֶ֔ם מַחְמַ֥ד עֵֽינֵיכֶ֖ם וּמַחְמַ֣ל נַפְשְׁכֶ֑ם וּבְנֵיכֶ֧ם וּבְנֽוֹתֵיכֶ֛ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר עֲזַבְתֶּ֖ם יִפֹּֽלוּ׃ בַּחֶ֥רֶב ’ĕ·mōr lə·ḇêṯ yiś·rā·’êl kōh- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh hin·nî ’ā·mar mə·ḥal·lêl ’eṯ- miq·dā·šî gə·’ō·wn ‘uz·zə·ḵem maḥ·maḏ ‘ê·nê·ḵem ū·maḥ·mal nap̄·šə·ḵem ū·ḇə·nê·ḵem ū·ḇə·nō·w·ṯê·ḵem ’ă·šer ‘ă·zaḇ·tem yip·pō·lū ba·ḥe·reḇ — WLC · 21

Then you will do as I have done:… You will not cover [your] lips or eat the bread of mourners…

וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֖ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשִׂ֑יתִי עַל־ לֹ֣א תַעְט֔וּ שָׂפָם֙ תֹאכֵֽלוּ׃ וְלֶ֥חֶם אֲנָשִׁ֖ים לֹ֥א wa·‘ă·śî·ṯem ka·’ă·šer ‘ā·śî·ṯî ‘al- lō ṯa‘·ṭū śā·p̄ām ṯō·ḵê·lū wə·le·ḥem ’ă·nā·šîm lō — WLC · 22

Your turbans will remain on your heads and your sandals on your feet. You will not mourn or weep, but you will waste away because of your sins, and you will groan among… yourselves.

‘Thus Ezekiel will be a sign for you; you will do everything that he has done. When this happens, you will know that I am the Lord GOD.’

And you, son of man,… know that on the day I take away their stronghold, their pride and joy— the desire of their eyes which uplifted their souls— and their sons and daughters as well,

וְאַתָּ֣ה בֶן־ אָדָ֔ם הֲל֗וֹא בְּי֨וֹם קַחְתִּ֤י מֵהֶם֙ אֶת־ מָ֣עוּזָּ֔ם תִּפְאַרְתָּ֑ם אֶת־ מְשׂ֖וֹשׂ מַחְמַ֤ד עֵֽינֵיהֶם֙ וְאֶת־ מַשָּׂ֣א נַפְשָׁ֔ם בְּנֵיהֶ֖ם וּבְנוֹתֵיהֶֽם׃ wə·’at·tāh ḇen- ’ā·ḏām hă·lō·w bə·yō·wm qaḥ·tî mê·hem ’eṯ- mā·‘ūz·zām tip̄·’ar·tām ’eṯ- mə·śō·wś maḥ·maḏ ‘ê·nê·hem wə·’eṯ- maś·śā nap̄·šām bə·nê·hem ū·ḇə·nō·w·ṯê·hem — WLC · 25

on that day a fugitive will come vvv and tell you the news…

הַה֔וּא בַּיּ֣וֹם הַפָּלִ֖יט יָב֥וֹא אֵלֶ֑יךָ לְהַשְׁמָע֖וּת אָזְנָֽיִם׃ ha·hū bay·yō·wm hap·pā·lîṭ yā·ḇō·w ’ê·le·ḵā lə·haš·mā·‘ūṯ ’ā·zə·nā·yim — WLC · 26

On that day your mouth… will be opened to him who has escaped; you will speak and no longer be mute. So you will be a sign to them, and they will know that I am the LORD.”
