Chapter 22
The Sins of Jerusalem
1
Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“As for you, son of man, will you judge her? Will you pass judgment on the city of bloodshed? Then confront her with all her abominations
𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤄𐤕𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤄𐤕𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤄𐤃𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤕𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤄
וְאַתָּ֣ה בֶן־ אָדָ֔ם הֲתִשְׁפֹּ֥ט הֲתִשְׁפֹּ֖ט אֶת־ עִ֣יר הַדָּמִ֑ים וְה֣וֹדַעְתָּ֔הּ אֵ֖ת כָּל־ תּוֹעֲבוֹתֶֽיהָ׃ wə·’at·tāh ḇen- ’ā·ḏām hă·ṯiš·pōṭ hă·ṯiš·pōṭ ’eṯ- ‘îr had·dā·mîm wə·hō·w·ḏa‘·tāh ’êṯ kāl- tō·w·‘ă·ḇō·w·ṯe·hā — WLC · 2

and tell her that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘O city who brings her own doom… by shedding blood within her walls and making idols vvv to defile herself,
𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤔𐤐𐤊𐤕 𐤃𐤌 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤕𐤄 𐤂𐤋𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤈𐤌𐤀𐤄
וְאָמַרְתָּ֗ כֹּ֤ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה אָמַר֙ עִ֣יר עִתָּ֑הּ לָב֣וֹא שֹׁפֶ֥כֶת דָּ֛ם בְּתוֹכָ֖הּ וְעָשְׂתָ֧ה גִלּוּלִ֛ים עָלֶ֖יהָ לְטָמְאָֽה׃ wə·’ā·mar·tā kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar ‘îr ‘it·tāh lā·ḇō·w šō·p̄e·ḵeṯ dām bə·ṯō·w·ḵāh wə·‘ā·śə·ṯāh ḡil·lū·lîm ‘ā·le·hā lə·ṭā·mə·’āh — WLC · 3

you are guilty of the blood you have shed, and you are defiled by the idols you have made. You have brought your days to a close and have come to [the] [end] [of] your years. Therefore… I have made you a reproach to the nations and a mockery to all the lands.

אָשַׁ֗מְתְּ בְּדָמֵ֨ךְ אֲשֶׁר־ שָׁפַ֜כְתְּ טָמֵ֔את וּבְגִלּוּלַ֤יִךְ אֲשֶׁר־ עָשִׂית֙ יָמַ֔יִךְ וַתַּקְרִ֣יבִי וַתָּב֖וֹא עַד־ שְׁנוֹתָ֑יִךְ עַל־ כֵּ֗ן נְתַתִּ֤יךְ חֶרְפָּה֙ לַגּוֹיִ֔ם וְקַלָּסָ֖ה לְכָל־ הָאֲרָצֽוֹת׃ ’ā·šamt bə·ḏā·mêḵ ’ă·šer- šā·p̄aḵt ṭā·mêṯ ū·ḇə·ḡil·lū·la·yiḵ ’ă·šer- ‘ā·śîṯ yā·ma·yiḵ wat·taq·rî·ḇî wat·tā·ḇō·w ‘aḏ- šə·nō·w·ṯā·yiḵ ‘al- kên nə·ṯat·tîḵ ḥer·pāh lag·gō·w·yim wə·qal·lā·sāh lə·ḵāl hā·’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ — WLC · 4

Those near and far will mock you, O infamous [city]…, full of turmoil.

הַקְּרֹב֛וֹת וְהָרְחֹק֥וֹת מִמֵּ֖ךְ יִתְקַלְּסוּ־ בָ֑ךְ טְמֵאַ֣ת הַשֵּׁ֔ם רַבַּ֖ת הַמְּהוּמָֽה׃ haq·qə·rō·ḇō·wṯ wə·hā·rə·ḥō·qō·wṯ mim·mêḵ yiṯ·qal·lə·sū- ḇāḵ ṭə·mê·’aṯ haš·šêm rab·baṯ ham·mə·hū·māh — WLC · 5

See how every prince of Israel within you has used his power to shed blood.

הִנֵּה֙ אִ֥ישׁ נְשִׂיאֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בָ֑ךְ הָ֣יוּ לִזְרֹע֖וֹ לְמַ֖עַן שְׁפָךְ־ דָּֽם׃ hin·nêh ’îš nə·śî·’ê yiś·rā·’êl ḇāḵ hā·yū liz·rō·‘ōw lə·ma·‘an šə·p̄āḵ- dām — WLC · 6

Father and mother are treated with contempt. Within your walls the foreign resident is exploited… -, the fatherless and the widow are oppressed
𐤀𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤌 𐤄𐤒𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤊 𐤋𐤂𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤁𐤏𐤔𐤒 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤊 𐤉𐤕𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤅𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤊
אָ֤ב וָאֵם֙ הֵקַ֣לּוּ בָ֔ךְ לַגֵּ֛ר עָשׂ֥וּ בַעֹ֖שֶׁק בְּתוֹכֵ֑ךְ יָת֥וֹם וְאַלְמָנָ֖ה ה֥וֹנוּ בָֽךְ׃ ’āḇ wā·’êm hê·qal·lū ḇāḵ lag·gêr ‘ā·śū ḇa·‘ō·šeq bə·ṯō·w·ḵêḵ yā·ṯō·wm wə·’al·mā·nāh hō·w·nū ḇāḵ — WLC · 7

You have despised My holy things and profaned My Sabbaths.
𐤁𐤆𐤉𐤕 𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤇𐤋𐤋𐤕 𐤔𐤁𐤕𐤕𐤉
בָּזִ֑ית קָדָשַׁ֖י וְאֶת־ חִלָּֽלְתְּ׃ שַׁבְּתֹתַ֖י bā·zîṯ qā·ḏā·šay wə·’eṯ- ḥil·lā·lət šab·bə·ṯō·ṯay — WLC · 8

Among you are slanderous men bent on bloodshed; within you are those who eat on the mountain [shrines] and commit acts of indecency -.
𐤁𐤊 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤓𐤊𐤉𐤋 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤔𐤐𐤊 𐤃𐤌 𐤁𐤊 𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤆𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤊
בָ֖ךְ הָ֥יוּ רָכִ֛יל אַנְשֵׁ֥י לְמַ֣עַן שְׁפָךְ־ דָּ֑ם בָ֔ךְ אָ֣כְלוּ וְאֶל־ הֶֽהָרִים֙ עָשׂ֥וּ זִמָּ֖ה בְתוֹכֵֽךְ׃ ḇāḵ hā·yū rā·ḵîl ’an·šê lə·ma·‘an šə·p̄āḵ- dām ḇāḵ ’ā·ḵə·lū wə·’el- he·hā·rîm ‘ā·śū zim·māh ḇə·ṯō·w·ḵêḵ — WLC · 9

In you they have uncovered the nakedness of their fathers; in you they violate women during their menstrual impurity…
𐤁𐤊 𐤂𐤋𐤄 𐤏𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤁 𐤁𐤊 𐤏𐤍𐤅 𐤈𐤌𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤍𐤃𐤄
בָ֑ךְ גִּלָּה־ עֶרְוַת־ אָ֖ב בָֽךְ׃ עִנּוּ־ טְמֵאַ֥ת הַנִּדָּ֖ה ḇāḵ gil·lāh- ‘er·waṯ- ’āḇ ḇāḵ ‘in·nū- ṭə·mê·’aṯ han·nid·dāh — WLC · 10

One man commits an abomination with his neighbor’s wife; another wickedly defiles his daughter-in-law; and yet another violates his sister, his own father’s daughter.
𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤕𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤓𐤏𐤄𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤆𐤌𐤄 𐤈𐤌𐤀 𐤊𐤋𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤊 𐤀𐤇𐤕𐤅 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤕
וְאִ֣ישׁ׀ עָשָׂה֙ תּֽוֹעֵבָ֔ה אֶת־ רֵעֵ֗הוּ אֵ֣שֶׁת וְאִ֥ישׁ אֶת־ בְזִמָּ֑ה טִמֵּ֣א כַּלָּת֖וֹ וְאִ֛ישׁ אֶת־ עִנָּה־ בָֽךְ׃ אֲחֹת֥וֹ אָבִ֖יו בַת־ wə·’îš ‘ā·śāh tō·w·‘ê·ḇāh ’eṯ- rê·‘ê·hū ’ê·šeṯ wə·’îš ’eṯ- ḇə·zim·māh ṭim·mê kal·lā·ṯōw wə·’îš ’eṯ- ‘in·nāh- ḇāḵ ’ă·ḥō·ṯōw ’ā·ḇîw ḇaṯ- — WLC · 11

In you they take bribes to shed blood. You engage in usury, take excess interest, and extort your neighbors. But Me you have forgotten, declares the Lord GOD.
𐤁𐤊 𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤅 𐤔𐤇𐤃 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤔𐤐𐤊 𐤃𐤌 𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤕 𐤍𐤔𐤊 𐤅𐤕𐤁𐤑𐤏𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤁𐤏𐤔𐤒 𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤔𐤊𐤇𐤕 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
בָ֖ךְ לָֽקְחוּ־ שֹׁ֥חַד לְמַ֣עַן שְׁפָךְ־ דָּ֑ם לָקַ֗חַתְּ נֶ֧שֶׁךְ וַתְּבַצְּעִ֤י וְתַרְבִּ֣ית בַּעֹ֔שֶׁק רֵעַ֙יִךְ֙ וְאֹתִ֣י שָׁכַ֔חַתְּ נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִֽה׃ ḇāḵ lā·qə·ḥū- šō·ḥaḏ lə·ma·‘an šə·p̄āḵ- dām lā·qa·ḥat ne·šeḵ wat·tə·ḇaṣ·ṣə·‘î wə·ṯar·bîṯ ba·‘ō·šeq rê·‘a·yiḵ wə·’ō·ṯî šā·ḵa·ḥat nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh — WLC · 12

Now look, I strike My hands together against your unjust gain - and against the blood you have shed - in your midst.
𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤊𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤐𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤑𐤏𐤊 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤃𐤌𐤊 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤊
וְהִנֵּה֙ הִכֵּ֣יתִי כַפִּ֔י אֶל־ בִּצְעֵ֖ךְ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשִׂ֑ית וְעַ֨ל־ דָּמֵ֔ךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָי֖וּ בְּתוֹכֵֽךְ׃ wə·hin·nêh hik·kê·ṯî ḵap·pî ’el- biṣ·‘êḵ ’ă·šer ‘ā·śîṯ wə·‘al- dā·mêḵ ’ă·šer hā·yū bə·ṯō·w·ḵêḵ — WLC · 13

Will your courage endure or your hands be strong in the day I deal with you? I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will act.

לִבֵּךְ֙ הֲיַעֲמֹ֤ד אִם־ יָדַ֔יִךְ תֶּחֱזַ֣קְנָה לַיָּמִ֕ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲנִ֖י עֹשֶׂ֣ה אוֹתָ֑ךְ אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה דִּבַּ֥רְתִּי וְעָשִֽׂיתִי׃ lib·bêḵ hă·ya·‘ă·mōḏ ’im- yā·ḏa·yiḵ te·ḥĕ·zaq·nāh lay·yā·mîm ’ă·šer ’ă·nî ‘ō·śeh ’ō·w·ṯāḵ ’ă·nî Yah·weh dib·bar·tî wə·‘ā·śî·ṯî — WLC · 14

I will disperse you among the nations and scatter you throughout the lands; I will purge your uncleanness…

וַהֲפִיצוֹתִ֤י אוֹתָךְ֙ בַּגּוֹיִ֔ם וְזֵרִיתִ֖יךְ בָּאֲרָצ֑וֹת וַהֲתִמֹּתִ֥י טֻמְאָתֵ֖ךְ מִמֵּֽךְ׃ wa·hă·p̄î·ṣō·w·ṯî ’ō·w·ṯāḵ bag·gō·w·yim wə·zê·rî·ṯîḵ bā·’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ wa·hă·ṯim·mō·ṯî ṭum·’ā·ṯêḵ mim·mêḵ — WLC · 15

And when you have defiled yourself in the eyes of the nations, then you will know that I am the LORD.’”

וְנִחַ֥לְתְּ בָּ֖ךְ לְעֵינֵ֣י גוֹיִ֑ם וְיָדַ֖עַתְּ כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃פ wə·ni·ḥalt bāḵ lə·‘ê·nê ḡō·w·yim wə·yā·ḏa·‘at kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh — WLC · 16
The Refining Furnace

Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 17

“Son of man, the house of Israel has become dross to Me. All of them are copper, tin, iron, and lead inside the furnace; they are but the dross of silver.
𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤎𐤅𐤂 𐤋𐤉 𐤊𐤋𐤌 𐤍𐤇𐤔𐤕 𐤅𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤋 𐤅𐤁𐤓𐤆𐤋 𐤅𐤏𐤅𐤐𐤓𐤕 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤊𐤅𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤎 𐤎𐤂𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤎𐤐
בֶּן־ אָדָ֕ם בֵֽית־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל הָיוּ־ לְסוּג לִ֥י כֻּלָּ֡ם נְ֠חֹשֶׁת וּבְדִ֨יל וּבַרְזֶ֤ל וְעוֹפֶ֙רֶת֙ בְּת֣וֹךְ כּ֔וּר הָיֽוּ׃ס סִגִ֥ים כֶּ֖סֶף ben- ’ā·ḏām ḇêṯ- yiś·rā·’êl hā·yū- lə·sūḡ lî kul·lām nə·ḥō·šeṯ ū·ḇə·ḏîl ū·ḇar·zel wə·‘ō·w·p̄e·reṯ bə·ṯō·wḵ kūr hā·yū si·ḡîm ke·sep̄ — WLC · 18

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Because all of you have become dross, vvv behold, I will gather you into… Jerusalem.
𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤊𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤎𐤂𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤒𐤁𐤑 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌
לָכֵ֗ן כֹּ֤ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה אָמַר֙ יַ֛עַן כֻּלְּכֶ֖ם הֱי֥וֹת לְסִגִ֑ים לָכֵן֙ הִנְנִ֣י קֹבֵ֣ץ אֶתְכֶ֔ם אֶל־ תּ֖וֹךְ יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ lā·ḵên kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar ya·‘an kul·lə·ḵem hĕ·yō·wṯ lə·si·ḡîm lā·ḵên hin·nî qō·ḇêṣ ’eṯ·ḵem ’el- tō·wḵ yə·rū·šā·lim — WLC · 19

Just as one gathers silver, copper, iron, lead, and tin into… the furnace to melt with a fiery blast…, so I will gather you in My anger and wrath, leave [you] [there], and melt you.

The conspiracy of the princes in her midst is like a roaring lion tearing its prey. They devour the people, seize the treasures and precious things, and multiply the widows within her.

I searched for a man among them to repair the wall and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, so that I should not destroy it. But I found no one.
