Chapter 19
A Lament for the Princes of Israel

[“]As for you, take up a lament for the princes of Israel
𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤔𐤀 𐤒𐤉𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤀𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋
וְאַתָּה֙ שָׂ֣א קִינָ֔ה אֶל־ נְשִׂיאֵ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ wə·’at·tāh śā qî·nāh ’el- nə·śî·’ê yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 1

and say: ‘What was your mother? A lioness among the lions! She lay down among the young lions; she reared her cubs.

וְאָמַרְתָּ֗ מָ֤ה אִמְּךָ֙ לְבִיָּ֔א בֵּ֥ין אֲרָי֖וֹת רָבָ֑צָה בְּת֥וֹךְ כְּפִרִ֖ים רִבְּתָ֥ה גוּרֶֽיהָ׃ wə·’ā·mar·tā māh ’im·mə·ḵā lə·ḇî·yā bên ’ă·rā·yō·wṯ rā·ḇā·ṣāh bə·ṯō·wḵ kə·p̄i·rîm rib·bə·ṯāh ḡū·re·hā — WLC · 2

She brought up one of her cubs, and he became a young lion. After learning to tear [his] prey, he devoured men.

וַתַּ֛עַל אֶחָ֥ד מִגֻּרֶ֖יהָ הָיָ֑ה כְּפִ֣יר וַיִּלְמַ֥ד לִטְרָף־ טֶ֖רֶף אָכָֽל׃ אָדָ֥ם wat·ta·‘al ’e·ḥāḏ mig·gu·re·hā hā·yāh kə·p̄îr way·yil·maḏ liṭ·rāp̄- ṭe·rep̄ ’ā·ḵāl ’ā·ḏām — WLC · 3

When the nations heard of him, he was trapped in their pit. With hooks they led him away to the land of Egypt.

גּוֹיִ֖ם וַיִּשְׁמְע֥וּ אֵלָ֛יו נִתְפָּ֑שׂ בְּשַׁחְתָּ֣ם בַֽחַחִ֖ים וַיְבִאֻ֥הוּ אֶל־ אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ gō·w·yim way·yiš·mə·‘ū ’ê·lāw niṯ·pāś bə·šaḥ·tām ḇa·ḥa·ḥîm way·ḇi·’u·hū ’el- ’e·reṣ miṣ·rā·yim — WLC · 4

When she saw that she had waited in vain, that her hope was lost, she took another of her cubs and made him a young lion.

וַתֵּ֙רֶא֙ כִּ֣י נֽוֹחֲלָ֔ה תִּקְוָתָ֑הּ אָבְדָ֖ה וַתִּקַּ֛ח אֶחָ֥ד מִגֻּרֶ֖יהָ שָׂמָֽתְהוּ׃ כְּפִ֥יר wat·tê·re kî nō·w·ḥă·lāh tiq·wā·ṯāh ’ā·ḇə·ḏāh wat·tiq·qaḥ ’e·ḥāḏ mig·gu·re·hā śā·mā·ṯə·hū kə·p̄îr — WLC · 5

He prowled among the lions, and became a young lion. After learning to tear [his] prey, he devoured men.

וַיִּתְהַלֵּ֥ךְ בְּתוֹךְ־ אֲרָי֖וֹת הָיָ֑ה כְּפִ֣יר וַיִּלְמַ֥ד לִטְרָף־ טֶ֖רֶף אָכָֽל׃ אָדָ֥ם way·yiṯ·hal·lêḵ bə·ṯō·wḵ- ’ă·rā·yō·wṯ hā·yāh kə·p̄îr way·yil·maḏ liṭ·rāp̄- ṭe·rep̄ ’ā·ḵāl ’ā·ḏām — WLC · 6

He broke down their strongholds and devastated their cities. The land and everything in it shuddered at the sound of his roaring.

וַיֵּ֙דַע֙ אַלְמְנוֹתָ֔יו הֶחֱרִ֑יב וְעָרֵיהֶ֖ם אֶ֙רֶץ֙ וּמְלֹאָ֔הּ וַתֵּ֤שַׁם מִקּ֖וֹל שַׁאֲגָתֽוֹ׃ way·yê·ḏa‘ ’al·mə·nō·w·ṯāw he·ḥĕ·rîḇ wə·‘ā·rê·hem ’e·reṣ ū·mə·lō·’āh wat·tê·šam miq·qō·wl ša·’ă·ḡā·ṯōw — WLC · 7

Then the nations set out against him from the provinces on every side. They spread their net over him; he was trapped in their pit.
𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤌𐤃𐤉𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤓𐤔𐤅 𐤓𐤔𐤕𐤌 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤍𐤕𐤐𐤔 𐤁𐤔𐤇𐤕𐤌
גּוֹיִ֛ם וַיִּתְּנ֨וּ עָלָ֥יו מִמְּדִינ֑וֹת סָבִ֖יב וַֽיִּפְרְשׂ֥וּ רִשְׁתָּ֖ם עָלָ֛יו נִתְפָּֽשׂ׃ בְּשַׁחְתָּ֥ם gō·w·yim way·yit·tə·nū ‘ā·lāw mim·mə·ḏî·nō·wṯ sā·ḇîḇ way·yip̄·rə·śū riš·tām ‘ā·lāw niṯ·pāś bə·šaḥ·tām — WLC · 8

With hooks they caged him… and brought him to the king of Babylon. They brought him into captivity so that his roar was heard no longer on the mountains of Israel.

בַּֽחַחִ֔ים וַֽיִּתְּנֻ֤הוּ בַסּוּגַר֙ וַיְבִאֻ֖הוּ אֶל־ מֶ֣לֶךְ בָּבֶ֑ל יְבִאֻ֙הוּ֙ בַּמְּצֹד֔וֹת לְמַ֗עַן קוֹל֛וֹ יִשָּׁמַ֥ע לֹא־ ע֖וֹד אֶל־ הָרֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ ba·ḥa·ḥîm way·yit·tə·nu·hū ḇas·sū·ḡar way·ḇi·’u·hū ’el- me·leḵ bā·ḇel yə·ḇi·’u·hū bam·mə·ṣō·ḏō·wṯ lə·ma·‘an qō·w·lōw yiš·šā·ma‘ lō- ‘ō·wḏ ’el- hā·rê yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 9

Your mother was like a vine in your vineyard, planted by the water; it was fruitful and full of branches because of the abundant waters.

אִמְּךָ֥ כַגֶּ֛פֶן בְּדָמְךָ֖ שְׁתוּלָ֑ה עַל־ מַ֣יִם הָיְתָ֖ה פֹּֽרִיָּה֙ וַֽעֲנֵפָ֔ה רַבִּֽים׃ מִמַּ֥יִם ’im·mə·ḵā ḵag·ge·p̄en bə·ḏā·mə·ḵā šə·ṯū·lāh ‘al- ma·yim hā·yə·ṯāh pō·rî·yāh wa·‘ă·nê·p̄āh rab·bîm mim·ma·yim — WLC · 10

It had strong branches, fit for a ruler’s scepter. It towered high above… the thick branches, conspicuous for its height and for its dense foliage.
𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤄 𐤏𐤆 𐤌𐤈𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤁𐤈𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤂𐤁𐤄 𐤒𐤅𐤌𐤕𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤏𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤁𐤂𐤁𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤓𐤁 𐤃𐤋𐤉𐤕𐤉𐤅
וַיִּֽהְיוּ־ לָ֞הּ עֹ֗ז מַטּ֣וֹת אֶל־ מֹֽשְׁלִ֔ים שִׁבְטֵי֙ וַתִּגְבַּ֥הּ קֽוֹמָת֖וֹ עַל־ בֵּ֣ין עֲבֹתִ֑ים וַיֵּרָ֣א בְגָבְה֔וֹ בְּרֹ֖ב דָּלִיֹּתָֽיו׃ way·yih·yū- lāh ‘ōz maṭ·ṭō·wṯ ’el- mō·šə·lîm šiḇ·ṭê wat·tiḡ·bah qō·w·mā·ṯōw ‘al- bên ‘ă·ḇō·ṯîm way·yê·rā ḇə·ḡā·ḇə·hōw bə·rōḇ dā·lî·yō·ṯāw — WLC · 11

But it was uprooted in fury, cast down to the ground, and the east wind dried up its fruit. Its strong branches were stripped off and they withered; the fire consumed them.
𐤅𐤕𐤕𐤔 𐤁𐤇𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤔𐤋𐤊𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤄𐤒𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤄𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤔 𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤏𐤆𐤄 𐤌𐤈𐤄 𐤄𐤕𐤐𐤓𐤒𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤔𐤅 𐤀𐤔 𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤕𐤄𐤅
וַתֻּתַּ֤שׁ בְּחֵמָה֙ הֻשְׁלָ֔כָה לָאָ֣רֶץ הַקָּדִ֖ים וְר֥וּחַ הוֹבִ֣ישׁ פִּרְיָ֑הּ עֻזָּ֖הּ מַטֵּ֥ה הִתְפָּרְק֧וּ וְיָבֵ֛שׁוּ אֵ֥שׁ אֲכָלָֽתְהוּ׃ wat·tut·taš bə·ḥê·māh huš·lā·ḵāh lā·’ā·reṣ haq·qā·ḏîm wə·rū·aḥ hō·w·ḇîš pir·yāh ‘uz·zāh maṭ·ṭêh hiṯ·pā·rə·qū wə·yā·ḇê·šū ’êš ’ă·ḵā·lā·ṯə·hū — WLC · 12

Now it is planted in the wilderness, in a dry and thirsty land.
𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤔𐤕𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤁𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤑𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤑𐤌𐤀 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑
וְעַתָּ֖ה שְׁתוּלָ֣ה בַמִּדְבָּ֑ר צִיָּ֥ה וְצָמָֽא׃ בְּאֶ֖רֶץ wə·‘at·tāh šə·ṯū·lāh ḇam·miḏ·bār ṣî·yāh wə·ṣā·mā bə·’e·reṣ — WLC · 13

Fire has gone out from its main branch… and devoured its fruit; on it no strong branch remains fit for a ruler’s scepter.’ This is a lament and shall be used as a lament.”

אֵ֜שׁ וַתֵּצֵ֨א מִמַּטֵּ֤ה בַדֶּ֙יהָ֙ אָכָ֔לָה פִּרְיָ֣הּ בָ֛הּ וְלֹא־ עֹ֖ז מַטֵּה־ הָ֥יָה לִמְשׁ֑וֹל שֵׁ֣בֶט הִ֖יא קִ֥ינָה וַתְּהִ֥י לְקִינָֽה׃פ ’êš wat·tê·ṣê mim·maṭ·ṭêh ḇad·de·hā ’ā·ḵā·lāh pir·yāh ḇāh wə·lō- ‘ōz maṭ·ṭêh- hā·yāh lim·šō·wl šê·ḇeṭ hî qî·nāh wat·tə·hî lə·qî·nāh — WLC · 14
