Chapter 16
Jerusalem’s Unfaithfulness
1
Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“Son of man, confront Jerusalem with her abominations
𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤏 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤕𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤄
בֶּן־ אָדָ֕ם הוֹדַ֥ע אֶת־ יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם אֶת־ תּוֹעֲבֹתֶֽיהָ׃ ben- ’ā·ḏām hō·w·ḏa‘ ’eṯ- yə·rū·šā·lim ’eṯ- tō·w·‘ă·ḇō·ṯe·hā — WLC · 2

and tell [her that] this is what the Lord GOD says to Jerusalem: Your origin and your birth were in the land of the Canaanites. Your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite.
𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤌𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤌𐤋𐤃𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤄𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤊 𐤄𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤊 𐤇𐤕𐤉𐤕
וְאָמַרְתָּ֞ כֹּה־ אֲדֹנָ֤י יְהוִה֙ אָמַ֨ר לִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם מְכֹרֹתַ֙יִךְ֙ וּמֹ֣לְדֹתַ֔יִךְ מֵאֶ֖רֶץ הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֑י אָבִ֥יךְ הָאֱמֹרִ֖י וְאִמֵּ֥ךְ חִתִּֽית׃ wə·’ā·mar·tā kōh- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar lî·rū·šā·lim mə·ḵō·rō·ṯa·yiḵ ū·mō·lə·ḏō·ṯa·yiḵ mê·’e·reṣ hak·kə·na·‘ă·nî ’ā·ḇîḵ hā·’ĕ·mō·rî wə·’im·mêḵ ḥit·tîṯ — WLC · 3

On the day of your birth your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water for cleansing. You were not rubbed with salt… or wrapped in cloths… -.

בְּי֨וֹם וּמוֹלְדוֹתַ֗יִךְ הוּלֶּ֤דֶת שָׁרֵּ֔ךְ לֹֽא־ כָרַּ֣ת אֹתָךְ֙ לֹֽא־ רֻחַ֖צְתְּ וּבְמַ֥יִם לְמִשְׁעִ֑י לֹ֣א וְהָמְלֵ֙חַ֙ הֻמְלַ֔חַתְּ וְהָחְתֵּ֖ל לֹ֥א חֻתָּֽלְתְּ׃ bə·yō·wm ū·mō·wl·ḏō·w·ṯa·yiḵ hūl·le·ḏeṯ šār·rêḵ lō- ḵār·raṯ ’ō·ṯāḵ lō- ru·ḥaṣt ū·ḇə·ma·yim lə·miš·‘î lō wə·hā·mə·lê·aḥ hum·la·ḥat wə·hā·ḥə·têl lō ḥut·tā·lət — WLC · 4

No one cared enough… for you to do even one of these things out of compassion for you. Instead, you were thrown out into the open field, because you were despised on the day of your birth -.

לֹא־ חָ֨סָה עַ֗יִן עָלַ֜יִךְ לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת לָ֛ךְ אַחַ֥ת מֵאֵ֖לֶּה לְחֻמְלָ֣ה עָלָ֑יִךְ וַֽתֻּשְׁלְכִ֞י אֶל־ פְּנֵ֤י הַשָּׂדֶה֙ נַפְשֵׁ֔ךְ בְּגֹ֣עַל בְּי֖וֹם הֻלֶּ֥דֶת אֹתָֽךְ׃ lō- ḥā·sāh ‘a·yin ‘ā·la·yiḵ la·‘ă·śō·wṯ lāḵ ’a·ḥaṯ mê·’êl·leh lə·ḥum·lāh ‘ā·lā·yiḵ wat·tuš·lə·ḵî ’el- pə·nê haś·śā·ḏeh nap̄·šêḵ bə·ḡō·‘al bə·yō·wm hul·le·ḏeṯ ’ō·ṯāḵ — WLC · 5

Then I passed by and saw you wallowing in your blood, and as you lay there in your blood I said to you, ‘Live!’ [There] I said to you, ‘Live!’

וָאֶעֱבֹ֤ר עָלַ֙יִךְ֙ וָֽאֶרְאֵ֔ךְ מִתְבּוֹסֶ֖סֶת בְּדָמָ֑יִךְ בְּדָמַ֣יִךְ וָאֹ֤מַר לָךְ֙ חֲיִ֔י בְּדָמַ֥יִךְ וָאֹ֥מַר לָ֖ךְ חֲיִֽי׃ wā·’e·‘ĕ·ḇōr ‘ā·la·yiḵ wā·’er·’êḵ miṯ·bō·w·se·seṯ bə·ḏā·mā·yiḵ bə·ḏā·ma·yiḵ wā·’ō·mar lāḵ ḥă·yî bə·ḏā·ma·yiḵ wā·’ō·mar lāḵ ḥă·yî — WLC · 6

I made you thrive like a plant of the field. You grew up and matured and became… very beautiful. Your breasts were formed and your hair grew, but you were naked and bare.
𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤓𐤁𐤁𐤄 𐤊𐤑𐤌𐤇 𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤓𐤁𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤁𐤀𐤉 𐤁𐤏𐤃𐤉 𐤏𐤃𐤉𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤊𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤔𐤏𐤓𐤊 𐤑𐤌𐤇 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤄
נְתַתִּ֔יךְ רְבָבָ֗ה כְּצֶ֤מַח הַשָּׂדֶה֙ וַתִּרְבִּי֙ וַֽתִּגְדְּלִ֔י וַתָּבֹ֖אִי בַּעֲדִ֣י עֲדָיִ֑ים שָׁדַ֤יִם נָכֹ֙נוּ֙ וּשְׂעָרֵ֣ךְ צִמֵּ֔חַ וְאַ֖תְּ עֵרֹ֥ם וְעֶרְיָֽה׃ nə·ṯat·tîḵ rə·ḇā·ḇāh kə·ṣe·maḥ haś·śā·ḏeh wat·tir·bî wat·tiḡ·də·lî wat·tā·ḇō·’î ba·‘ă·ḏî ‘ă·ḏā·yîm šā·ḏa·yim nā·ḵō·nū ū·śə·‘ā·rêḵ ṣim·mê·aḥ wə·’at ‘ê·rōm wə·‘er·yāh — WLC · 7

Then I passed by and saw you, and you were indeed old enough… for love. So I spread My cloak over you and covered your nakedness. I pledged Myself to you, entered into a covenant with you, and you became Mine, declares the Lord GOD.
𐤅𐤀𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤀𐤊 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤕𐤊 𐤏𐤕 𐤃𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤐𐤓𐤔 𐤊𐤍𐤐𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤊𐤎𐤄 𐤏𐤓𐤅𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤁𐤏 𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤉𐤉 𐤋𐤉 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
וָאֶעֱבֹ֨ר עָלַ֜יִךְ וָאֶרְאֵ֗ךְ וְהִנֵּ֤ה עִתֵּךְ֙ עֵ֣ת דֹּדִ֔ים וָאֶפְרֹ֤שׂ כְּנָפִי֙ עָלַ֔יִךְ וָאֲכַסֶּ֖ה עֶרְוָתֵ֑ךְ וָאֶשָּׁ֣בַֽע לָ֠ךְ וָאָב֨וֹא בִבְרִ֜ית אֹתָ֗ךְ וַתִּ֥הְיִי לִֽי׃ נְאֻ֛ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִ֖ה wā·’e·‘ĕ·ḇōr ‘ā·la·yiḵ wā·’er·’êḵ wə·hin·nêh ‘it·têḵ ‘êṯ dō·ḏîm wā·’ep̄·rōś kə·nā·p̄î ‘ā·la·yiḵ wā·’ă·ḵas·seh ‘er·wā·ṯêḵ wā·’eš·šā·ḇa‘ lāḵ wā·’ā·ḇō·w ḇiḇ·rîṯ ’ō·ṯāḵ wat·tih·yî lî nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh — WLC · 8

Then I bathed you with water, rinsed off your blood,… and anointed you with oil.
𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤇𐤑𐤊 𐤁𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤈𐤐 𐤃𐤌𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤎𐤊𐤊 𐤁𐤔𐤌𐤍
וָאֶרְחָצֵ֣ךְ בַּמַּ֔יִם וָאֶשְׁטֹ֥ף דָּמַ֖יִךְ מֵֽעָלָ֑יִךְ וָאֲסֻכֵ֖ךְ בַּשָּֽׁמֶן׃ wā·’er·ḥā·ṣêḵ bam·ma·yim wā·’eš·ṭōp̄ dā·ma·yiḵ mê·‘ā·lā·yiḵ wā·’ă·su·ḵêḵ baš·šā·men — WLC · 9

I clothed you in embroidered cloth and gave you sandals of fine leather. I wrapped you in fine linen and covered you with silk.

וָאַלְבִּישֵׁ֣ךְ רִקְמָ֔ה וָאֶנְעֲלֵ֖ךְ תָּ֑חַשׁ וָאֶחְבְּשֵׁ֣ךְ בַּשֵּׁ֔שׁ וַאֲכַסֵּ֖ךְ מֶֽשִׁי׃ wā·’al·bî·šêḵ riq·māh wā·’en·‘ă·lêḵ tā·ḥaš wā·’eḥ·bə·šêḵ baš·šêš wa·’ă·ḵas·sêḵ me·šî — WLC · 10

I adorned you with jewelry, and I put bracelets on your wrists and a chain around your neck.

וָאֶעְדֵּ֖ךְ עֶ֑דִי וָאֶתְּנָ֤ה צְמִידִים֙ עַל־ יָדַ֔יִךְ וְרָבִ֖יד עַל־ גְּרוֹנֵֽךְ׃ wā·’e‘·dêḵ ‘e·ḏî wā·’et·tə·nāh ṣə·mî·ḏîm ‘al- yā·ḏa·yiḵ wə·rā·ḇîḏ ‘al- gə·rō·w·nêḵ — WLC · 11

I put a ring in your nose, earrings on your ears, and a beautiful crown upon your head.

וָאֶתֵּ֥ן נֶ֙זֶם֙ עַל־ אַפֵּ֔ךְ וַעֲגִילִ֖ים עַל־ אָזְנָ֑יִךְ תִּפְאֶ֖רֶת וַעֲטֶ֥רֶת בְּרֹאשֵֽׁךְ׃ wā·’et·tên ne·zem ‘al- ’ap·pêḵ wa·‘ă·ḡî·lîm ‘al- ’ā·zə·nā·yiḵ tip̄·’e·reṯ wa·‘ă·ṭe·reṯ bə·rō·šêḵ — WLC · 12

So you were adorned with gold and silver, and your clothing [was made of] fine linen, silk, and embroidered cloth. You ate fine flour, honey, and oil. You became very… beautiful and rose to be queen.

וַתַּעְדִּ֞י זָהָ֣ב וָכֶ֗סֶף וּמַלְבּוּשֵׁךְ֙ שֵׁשִׁי וָמֶ֙שִׁי֙ וְרִקְמָ֔ה אָכָלְתִּי סֹ֧לֶת וּדְבַ֛שׁ וָשֶׁ֖מֶן בִּמְאֹ֣ד מְאֹ֔ד וַתִּ֙יפִי֙ וַֽתִּצְלְחִ֖י לִמְלוּכָֽה׃ wat·ta‘·dî zā·hāḇ wā·ḵe·sep̄ ū·mal·bū·šêḵ šē·šī wā·me·šî wə·riq·māh ʾå̄·ḵå̄·lə·tī sō·leṯ ū·ḏə·ḇaš wā·še·men bim·’ōḏ mə·’ōḏ wat·tî·p̄î wat·tiṣ·lə·ḥî lim·lū·ḵāh — WLC · 13

Your fame spread among the nations on account of your beauty, for it [was] perfect in the splendor I bestowed on you, declares the Lord GOD.
𐤋𐤊 𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤁𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤐𐤉𐤊 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤊𐤋𐤉𐤋 𐤁𐤄𐤃𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
לָ֥ךְ שֵׁ֛ם וַיֵּ֨צֵא בַּגּוֹיִ֖ם בְּיָפְיֵ֑ךְ כִּ֣י׀ ה֗וּא כָּלִ֣יל בַּֽהֲדָרִי֙ אֲשֶׁר־ שַׂ֣מְתִּי עָלַ֔יִךְ נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִֽה׃ lāḵ šêm way·yê·ṣê bag·gō·w·yim bə·yā·p̄ə·yêḵ kî hū kā·lîl ba·hă·ḏā·rî ’ă·šer- śam·tî ‘ā·la·yiḵ nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh — WLC · 14

But because of your fame, you trusted in your beauty and played the harlot. You lavished your favors on everyone who passed by and your beauty was theirs for the asking.
𐤏𐤋 𐤔𐤌𐤊 𐤅𐤕𐤁𐤈𐤇𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤐𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤕𐤆𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤐𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤕𐤆𐤍𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤅𐤁𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤉
עַל־ שְׁמֵ֑ךְ וַתִּבְטְחִ֣י בְיָפְיֵ֔ךְ וַתִּזְנִ֖י וַתִּשְׁפְּכִ֧י אֶת־ תַּזְנוּתַ֛יִךְ עַל־ כָּל־ עוֹבֵ֖ר לוֹ־ יֶֽהִי׃ ‘al- šə·mêḵ wat·tiḇ·ṭə·ḥî ḇə·yā·p̄ə·yêḵ wat·tiz·nî wat·tiš·pə·ḵî ’eṯ- taz·nū·ṯa·yiḵ ‘al- kāl- ‘ō·w·ḇêr lōw- ye·hî — WLC · 15

You took some of your garments and made colorful high places for yourself, and on them you prostituted yourself. Such things should not have happened; never should they have occurred!
𐤅𐤕𐤒𐤇𐤉 𐤌𐤁𐤂𐤃𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤕𐤏𐤔𐤉 𐤈𐤋𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤆𐤍𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄
וַתִּקְחִ֣י מִבְּגָדַ֗יִךְ וַתַּֽעֲשִׂי־ טְלֻא֔וֹת בָּמ֣וֹת לָךְ֙ עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם וַתִּזְנִ֖י לֹ֥א בָא֖וֹת וְלֹ֥א יִהְיֶֽה׃ wat·tiq·ḥî mib·bə·ḡā·ḏa·yiḵ wat·ta·‘ă·śî- ṭə·lu·’ō·wṯ bā·mō·wṯ lāḵ ‘ă·lê·hem wat·tiz·nî lō ḇā·’ō·wṯ wə·lō yih·yeh — WLC · 16

You also took the fine jewelry of gold and silver I had given you, and you made male idols with which to prostitute yourself.

וַתִּקְחִ֞י תִפְאַרְתֵּ֗ךְ כְּלֵ֣י מִזְּהָבִ֤י וּמִכַּסְפִּי֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נָתַ֣תִּי לָ֔ךְ וַתַּעֲשִׂי־ לָ֖ךְ זָכָ֑ר צַלְמֵ֣י בָֽם׃ וַתִּזְנִי־ wat·tiq·ḥî ṯip̄·’ar·têḵ kə·lê miz·zə·hā·ḇî ū·mik·kas·pî ’ă·šer nā·ṯat·tî lāḵ wat·ta·‘ă·śî- lāḵ zā·ḵār ṣal·mê ḇām wat·tiz·nî- — WLC · 17

You took your embroidered garments to cover them, and you set My oil and incense before them.
𐤅𐤕𐤒𐤇𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤓𐤒𐤌𐤕𐤊 𐤁𐤂𐤃𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤊𐤎𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤒𐤈𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌
וַתִּקְחִ֛י אֶת־ רִקְמָתֵ֖ךְ בִּגְדֵ֥י וַתְּכַסִּ֑ים נָתַתִּי וְשַׁמְנִי֙ וּקְטָרְתִּ֔י לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃ wat·tiq·ḥî ’eṯ- riq·mā·ṯêḵ biḡ·ḏê wat·tə·ḵas·sîm nå̄·ṯat·tī wə·šam·nî ū·qə·ṭā·rə·tî lip̄·nê·hem — WLC · 18

And you set before them as a pleasing aroma the food I had given you— the fine flour, oil, and honey that I had fed you. That is what happened, declares the Lord GOD.

So your prostitution is the opposite of that of other women: No one solicited your favors, and you paid a fee instead of receiving one; so you are the very opposite!

But I will restore - Sodom and her daughters from captivity, as well as Samaria and her daughters. And I will restore you… along with them.

So you will bear your disgrace and be ashamed of all you did to comfort them -.

And your sisters, Sodom with her daughters and Samaria with her daughters, will return to their former state. You and your daughters… will also return to your former state.

before your wickedness was uncovered? Even so, you are now scorned by the daughters of Edom and all those around her, and by the daughters of the Philistines— all those around you who despise you.

For this is what the Lord GOD says: I will deal with you according to your deeds, since you have despised the oath by breaking the covenant.

But I will remember the covenant… I made with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you.

אֲנִ֧י אֶת־ וְזָכַרְתִּ֨י בְּרִיתִ֛י בְּרִ֥ית אוֹתָ֖ךְ בִּימֵ֣י נְעוּרָ֑יִךְ וַהֲקִמוֹתִ֥י עוֹלָֽם׃ לָ֖ךְ ’ă·nî ’eṯ- wə·zā·ḵar·tî bə·rî·ṯî bə·rîṯ ’ō·w·ṯāḵ bî·mê nə·‘ū·rā·yiḵ wa·hă·qi·mō·w·ṯî ‘ō·w·lām lāḵ — WLC · 60

Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed when you receive your older and younger… sisters. I will give them to you as daughters, but not because of My covenant with you.

So I will establish My covenant with you, and you will know that I am the LORD,

so that when I make atonement for all you have done, you will remember and be ashamed and never… again open your mouth because of your disgrace, declares the Lord GOD.”
