Chapter 11
Evil in High Places
1
Then the Spirit lifted me up and brought me to the gate of the house of the LORD that faces east. And there at the entrance of the gate [were] twenty-five… men. Among them I saw Jaazaniah son of Azzur and Pelatiah son of Benaiah, who were leaders of the people.
𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤀 𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤒𐤃𐤌𐤅𐤍𐤉 𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤐𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤒𐤃𐤉𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤄𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤉𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤏𐤆𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤋𐤈𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤍 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤌𐤐
ר֗וּחַ וַתִּשָּׂ֨א אֹתִ֜י וַתָּבֵ֣א אֹ֠תִי אֶל־ הַקַּדְמוֹנִי֙ שַׁ֨עַר בֵּית־ יְהוָ֤ה הַפּוֹנֶ֣ה קָדִ֔ימָה וְהִנֵּה֙ בְּפֶ֣תַח הַשַּׁ֔עַר עֶשְׂרִ֥ים וַחֲמִשָּׁ֖ה אִ֑ישׁ בְתוֹכָ֜ם אֶת־ וָאֶרְאֶ֨ה יַאֲזַנְיָ֧ה בֶן־ עַזֻּ֛ר וְאֶת־ פְּלַטְיָ֥הוּ בֶן־ בְּנָיָ֖הוּ שָׂרֵ֖י הָעָֽם׃פ rū·aḥ wat·tiś·śā ’ō·ṯî wat·tā·ḇê ’ō·ṯî ’el- haq·qaḏ·mō·w·nî ša·‘ar bêṯ- Yah·weh hap·pō·w·neh qā·ḏî·māh wə·hin·nêh bə·p̄e·ṯaḥ haš·ša·‘ar ‘eś·rîm wa·ḥă·miš·šāh ’îš ḇə·ṯō·w·ḵām ’eṯ- wā·’er·’eh ya·’ă·zan·yāh ḇen- ‘az·zur wə·’eṯ- pə·laṭ·yā·hū ḇen- bə·nā·yā·hū śā·rê hā·‘ām — WLC · 1

And [the LORD] said to me, “Son of man, these are the men who plot evil and give wicked counsel in this city.
𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤇𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤏𐤑𐤉𐤌 𐤓𐤏 𐤏𐤑𐤕 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤓
וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֵלָ֑י בֶּן־ אָדָ֕ם אֵ֣לֶּה הָאֲנָשִׁ֞ים הַחֹשְׁבִ֥ים אָ֛וֶן וְהַיֹּעֲצִ֥ים רָ֖ע עֲצַת־ הַזֹּֽאת׃ בָּעִ֥יר way·yō·mer ’ê·lāy ben- ’ā·ḏām ’êl·leh hā·’ă·nā·šîm ha·ḥō·šə·ḇîm ’ā·wen wə·hay·yō·‘ă·ṣîm rā‘ ‘ă·ṣaṯ- haz·zōṯ bā·‘îr — WLC · 2

They are saying, ‘Is not the time near to build houses? The city [is] the cooking pot, and we are the meat.’

הָאֹ֣מְרִ֔ים לֹ֥א בְקָר֖וֹב בְּנ֣וֹת בָּתִּ֑ים הִ֣יא הַסִּ֔יר וַאֲנַ֖חְנוּ הַבָּשָֽׂר׃ hā·’ō·mə·rîm lō ḇə·qā·rō·wḇ bə·nō·wṯ bāt·tîm hî has·sîr wa·’ă·naḥ·nū hab·bā·śār — WLC · 3

Therefore prophesy against them; prophesy, O son of man!”

לָכֵ֖ן הִנָּבֵ֣א עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם הִנָּבֵ֖א בֶּן־ אָדָֽם׃ lā·ḵên hin·nā·ḇê ‘ă·lê·hem hin·nā·ḇê ben- ’ā·ḏām — WLC · 4

And the Spirit of the LORD fell upon me and told me to declare that this is what the LORD says: “That is what you are thinking, O house of Israel; and I know the thoughts that arise in your minds.
𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤐𐤋 𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤍 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤓𐤅𐤇𐤊𐤌
ר֣וּחַ יְהוָה֒ וַתִּפֹּ֣ל עָלַי֮ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֗י אֱמֹר֙ כֹּה־ יְהוָ֔ה אָמַ֣ר כֵּ֥ן אֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֲנִ֥י יְדַעְתִּֽיהָ׃ וּמַעֲל֥וֹת רֽוּחֲכֶ֖ם rū·aḥ Yah·weh wat·tip·pōl ‘ā·lay way·yō·mer ’ê·lay ’ĕ·mōr kōh- Yah·weh ’ā·mar kên ’ă·mar·tem bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl ’ă·nî yə·ḏa‘·tî·hā ū·ma·‘ă·lō·wṯ rū·ḥă·ḵem — WLC · 5

You have multiplied those you killed in this city and filled its streets with the dead.

הִרְבֵּיתֶ֥ם חַלְלֵיכֶ֖ם הַזֹּ֑את בָּעִ֣יר וּמִלֵּאתֶ֥ם חוּצֹתֶ֖יהָ חָלָֽל׃פ hir·bê·ṯem ḥal·lê·ḵem haz·zōṯ bā·‘îr ū·mil·lê·ṯem ḥū·ṣō·ṯe·hā ḥā·lāl — WLC · 6

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: The slain you have laid within [this city] are the meat, and the city is the pot; but I will remove you from it.

לָכֵ֗ן כֹּֽה־ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִה֒ אָמַר֮ חַלְלֵיכֶם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר שַׂמְתֶּ֣ם בְּתוֹכָ֔הּ הֵ֥מָּה הַבָּשָׂ֖ר וְהִ֣יא הַסִּ֑יר וְאֶתְכֶ֖ם הוֹצִ֥יא מִתּוֹכָֽהּ׃ lā·ḵên kōh- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar ḥal·lê·ḵem ’ă·šer śam·tem bə·ṯō·w·ḵāh hêm·māh hab·bā·śār wə·hî has·sîr wə·’eṯ·ḵem hō·w·ṣî mit·tō·w·ḵāh — WLC · 7

You fear the sword, so I will bring the sword against you, declares the Lord GOD.
𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤅𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
יְרֵאתֶ֑ם חֶ֖רֶב אָבִ֣יא וְחֶ֙רֶב֙ עֲלֵיכֶ֔ם נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִֽה׃ yə·rê·ṯem ḥe·reḇ ’ā·ḇî wə·ḥe·reḇ ‘ă·lê·ḵem nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh — WLC · 8

I will bring you out of [the city] and deliver you into the hands of foreigners, and I will execute judgments against you.
𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤑𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤌𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤄 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤆𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤊𐤌
וְהוֹצֵאתִ֤י אֶתְכֶם֙ מִתּוֹכָ֔הּ וְנָתַתִּ֥י אֶתְכֶ֖ם בְּיַד־ זָרִ֑ים וְעָשִׂ֛יתִי שְׁפָטִֽים׃ בָכֶ֖ם wə·hō·w·ṣê·ṯî ’eṯ·ḵem mit·tō·w·ḵāh wə·nā·ṯat·tî ’eṯ·ḵem bə·yaḏ- zā·rîm wə·‘ā·śî·ṯî šə·p̄ā·ṭîm ḇā·ḵem — WLC · 9

You will fall by the sword, and I will judge you even to the borders of Israel. Then you will know that I am the LORD.

תִּפֹּ֔לוּ בַּחֶ֣רֶב אֶשְׁפּ֣וֹט אֶתְכֶ֑ם עַל־ גְּב֥וּל יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וִֽידַעְתֶּ֖ם כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ tip·pō·lū ba·ḥe·reḇ ’eš·pō·wṭ ’eṯ·ḵem ‘al- gə·ḇūl yiś·rā·’êl wî·ḏa‘·tem kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh — WLC · 10

The city will not be a pot for you, nor will you be the meat within it. I will judge you even to the borders of Israel.

הִ֗יא לֹֽא־ תִהְיֶ֤ה לְסִ֔יר לָכֶם֙ וְאַתֶּ֛ם תִּהְי֥וּ לְבָשָׂ֑ר בְתוֹכָ֖הּ אֶשְׁפֹּ֥ט אֶתְכֶֽם׃ אֶל־ גְּב֥וּל יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל hî lō- ṯih·yeh lə·sîr lā·ḵem wə·’at·tem tih·yū lə·ḇā·śār ḇə·ṯō·w·ḵāh ’eš·pōṭ ’eṯ·ḵem ’el- gə·ḇūl yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 11

Then you will know that I am the LORD. For you have neither followed My statutes nor practiced My ordinances, but you have conformed to the ordinances of the nations around you.”
𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤇𐤒𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤉 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤉 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌
וִֽידַעְתֶּם֙ כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹ֣א הֲלַכְתֶּ֔ם בְּחֻקַּי֙ לֹ֣א עֲשִׂיתֶ֑ם וּמִשְׁפָּטַ֖י עֲשִׂיתֶֽם׃ וּֽכְמִשְׁפְּטֵ֧י הַגּוֹיִ֛ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר סְבִיבוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם wî·ḏa‘·tem kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh ’ă·šer lō hă·laḵ·tem bə·ḥuq·qay lō ‘ă·śî·ṯem ū·miš·pā·ṭay ‘ă·śî·ṯem ū·ḵə·miš·pə·ṭê hag·gō·w·yim ’ă·šer sə·ḇî·ḇō·w·ṯê·ḵem — WLC · 12
A Promise of Restoration

Now as I was prophesying, Pelatiah son of Benaiah died. Then I fell facedown… and cried out in a loud… voice, “Oh, Lord GOD, will You bring… the remnant of Israel to a complete end?”
𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀𐤉 𐤅𐤐𐤋𐤈𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤍 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤐𐤋 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤆𐤏𐤒 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤀𐤄𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋𐤐 𐤊𐤋𐤄
וַֽיְהִי֙ כְּהִנָּ֣בְאִ֔י וּפְלַטְיָ֥הוּ בֶן־ בְּנָיָ֖ה מֵ֑ת וָאֶפֹּ֨ל עַל־ פָּנַ֜י וָאֶזְעַ֣ק גָּד֗וֹל וָאֹמַר֙ קוֹל־ אֲהָהּ֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה אַתָּ֣ה עֹשֶׂ֔ה אֵ֖ת שְׁאֵרִ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ כָּלָה֙ way·hî kə·hin·nā·ḇə·’î ū·p̄ə·laṭ·yā·hū ḇen- bə·nā·yāh mêṯ wā·’ep·pōl ‘al- pā·nay wā·’ez·‘aq gā·ḏō·wl wā·’ō·mar qō·wl- ’ă·hāh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’at·tāh ‘ō·śeh ’êṯ šə·’ê·rîṯ yiś·rā·’êl kā·lāh — WLC · 13

Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 14

“Son of man, your brothers— your relatives, your fellow exiles…, and the whole house of Israel -— are those of whom the people of Jerusalem have said, ‘They are far away from the LORD; this land has been given to us as a possession.’
𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉 𐤂𐤀𐤋𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤓𐤇𐤒𐤅 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤍𐤕𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤓𐤔𐤄𐤎
בֶּן־ אָדָ֗ם אַחֶ֤יךָ אַחֶ֙יךָ֙ אַנְשֵׁ֣י גְאֻלָּתֶ֔ךָ וְכָל־ בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל כֻּלֹּ֑ה אֲשֶׁר֩ יֹשְׁבֵ֣י יְרוּשָׁלִַ֗ם אָמְר֨וּ לָהֶ֜ם רַֽחֲקוּ֙ מֵעַ֣ל יְהוָ֔ה הִ֛יא הָאָ֖רֶץ נִתְּנָ֥ה לָ֥נוּ לְמוֹרָשָֽׁה׃ס ben- ’ā·ḏām ’a·ḥe·ḵā ’a·ḥe·ḵā ’an·šê ḡə·’ul·lā·ṯe·ḵā wə·ḵāl bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl kul·lōh ’ă·šer yō·šə·ḇê yə·rū·šā·lim ’ā·mə·rū lā·hem ra·ḥă·qū mê·‘al Yah·weh hî hā·’ā·reṣ nit·tə·nāh lā·nū lə·mō·w·rā·šāh — WLC · 15

Therefore declare that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Although I sent them far away among the nations… and scattered them among the countries, yet for a little while I have been a sanctuary for them in the countries to which they have gone…’

לָכֵ֣ן אֱמֹ֗ר כֹּֽה־ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִה֒ אָמַר֮ כִּ֤י הִרְחַקְתִּים֙ בַּגּוֹיִ֔ם וְכִ֥י הֲפִֽיצוֹתִ֖ים בָּאֲרָצ֑וֹת מְעַ֔ט וָאֱהִ֤י לְמִקְדָּ֣שׁ לָהֶם֙ בָּאֲרָצ֖וֹת אֲשֶׁר־ בָּ֥אוּ שָֽׁם׃ס lā·ḵên ’ĕ·mōr kōh- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar kî hir·ḥaq·tîm bag·gō·w·yim wə·ḵî hă·p̄î·ṣō·w·ṯîm bā·’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ mə·‘aṭ wā·’ĕ·hî lə·miq·dāš lā·hem bā·’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ ’ă·šer- bā·’ū šām — WLC · 16

Therefore declare that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘I will gather you from the peoples and assemble you from the countries to which you have been scattered and I will give back to you the land of Israel.’

When they return to it, they will remove - all its detestable things and all its abominations.

And I will give them singleness of heart and put a new spirit within them; I will remove their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh,

so that they may follow My statutes, keep My ordinances, and practice them. Then they will be My people, and I will be their God.

But as for those whose hearts pursue detestable things and abominations…, I will bring their conduct down upon their own heads, declares the Lord GOD.”

Then the cherubim, with the wheels beside them, spread their wings, and the glory of the God of Israel was above them.

And the Spirit lifted me up and carried me back to Chaldea, to the exiles in the vision [given] by the Spirit of God. After the vision - had gone up from me,
