Chapter 3

The Prophet’s Afflictions

1

I am the man who has seen affliction under the rod of [God’s] wrath.

𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤂𐤁𐤓 𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤏𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤔𐤁𐤈 𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤅

אֲנִ֤י הַגֶּ֙בֶר֙ רָאָ֣ה עֳנִ֔י בְּשֵׁ֖בֶט עֶבְרָתֽוֹ׃ ’ă·nî hag·ge·ḇer rā·’āh ‘o·nî bə·šê·ḇeṭ ‘eḇ·rā·ṯōwWLC · 1

  • He has driven me away and made me walk in darkness instead of light.

𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤉 𐤍𐤄𐤂 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤇𐤔𐤊 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤅𐤓

אוֹתִ֥י נָהַ֛ג וַיֹּלַ֖ךְ חֹ֥שֶׁךְ וְלֹא־ אֽוֹר׃ ’ō·w·ṯî nā·haḡ way·yō·laḵ ḥō·šeḵ wə·lō- ’ō·wrWLC · 2

Indeed, He keeps turning… His hand against me all day long…

אַ֣ךְ יָשֻׁ֛ב יַהֲפֹ֥ךְ יָד֖וֹ בִּ֥י כָּל־ הַיּֽוֹם׃ס ’aḵ yā·šuḇ ya·hă·p̄ōḵ yā·ḏōw bî kāl- hay·yō·wmWLC · 3

He has worn away my flesh and skin; He has shattered my bones.

בִּלָּ֤ה בְשָׂרִי֙ וְעוֹרִ֔י שִׁבַּ֖ר עַצְמוֹתָֽי׃ bil·lāh ḇə·śā·rî wə·‘ō·w·rî šib·bar ‘aṣ·mō·w·ṯāyWLC · 4

He has besieged me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship.

בָּנָ֥ה עָלַ֛י וַיַּקַּ֖ף רֹ֥אשׁ וּתְלָאָֽה׃ bā·nāh ‘ā·lay way·yaq·qap̄ rōš ū·ṯə·lā·’āhWLC · 5

He has made me dwell in darkness like those dead for ages.

𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤌𐤇𐤔𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌𐤎

הוֹשִׁיבַ֖נִי בְּמַחֲשַׁכִּ֥ים כְּמֵתֵ֥י עוֹלָֽם׃ס hō·wō·šî·ḇa·nî bə·ma·ḥă·šak·kîm kə·mê·ṯê ‘ō·w·lāmWLC · 6

He has walled me in… so I cannot escape; He has weighed me down with chains.

𐤂𐤃𐤓 𐤁𐤏𐤃𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤑𐤀 𐤄𐤊𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤍𐤇𐤔𐤕𐤉

גָּדַ֧ר בַּעֲדִ֛י וְלֹ֥א אֵצֵ֖א הִכְבִּ֥יד נְחָשְׁתִּֽי׃ gā·ḏar ba·‘ă·ḏî wə·lō ’ê·ṣê hiḵ·bîḏ nə·ḥā·šə·tîWLC · 7

Even when I cry out and plead for help, He shuts out my prayer.

𐤂𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤆𐤏𐤒 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤏 𐤔𐤕𐤌 𐤕𐤐𐤋𐤕𐤉

גַּ֣ם כִּ֤י אֶזְעַק֙ וַאֲשַׁוֵּ֔עַ שָׂתַ֖ם תְּפִלָּתִֽי׃ gam kî ’ez·‘aq wa·’ă·šaw·wê·a‘ śā·ṯam tə·p̄il·lā·ṯîWLC · 8

He has barred my ways with cut stones; He has made my paths crooked.

𐤂𐤃𐤓 𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤂𐤆𐤉𐤕 𐤍𐤕𐤉𐤁𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤅𐤄𐤎

גָּדַ֤ר דְּרָכַי֙ בְּגָזִ֔ית נְתִיבֹתַ֖י עִוָּֽה׃ס gā·ḏar də·rā·ḵay bə·ḡā·zîṯ nə·ṯî·ḇō·ṯay ‘iw·wāhWLC · 9

He is a bear lying in wait, a lion hiding in ambush.

𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤋𐤉 𐤃𐤁 𐤀𐤓𐤁 𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤌𐤎𐤕𐤓𐤉𐤌

הוּא֙ לִ֔י דֹּ֣ב אֹרֵ֥ב אַרְיֵה בְּמִסְתָּרִֽים׃ hū lî dōḇ ’ō·rêḇ ʾar·yēh bə·mis·tā·rîmWLC · 10

He forced me off my path and tore me to pieces; He left me without help.

𐤎𐤅𐤓𐤓 𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤔𐤇𐤍𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤌

סוֹרֵ֛ר דְּרָכַ֥י וַֽיְפַשְּׁחֵ֖נִי שָׂמַ֥נִי שֹׁמֵֽם׃ sō·w·rêr də·rā·ḵay way·p̄aš·šə·ḥê·nî śā·ma·nî šō·mêmWLC · 11

He bent His bow and set me as the target for His arrow.

𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤒𐤔𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤉𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤌𐤈𐤓𐤀 𐤋𐤇𐤑𐤎

דָּרַ֤ךְ קַשְׁתוֹ֙ וַיַּצִּיבֵ֔נִי כַּמַּטָּרָ֖א לַחֵֽץ׃ס dā·raḵ qaš·ṯō way·yaṣ·ṣî·ḇê·nî kam·maṭ·ṭā·rā la·ḥêṣWLC · 12

He pierced my kidneys with His arrows…

הֵבִיא֙ בְּכִלְיוֹתָ֔י בְּנֵ֖י אַשְׁפָּתֽוֹ׃ hê·ḇî bə·ḵil·yō·w·ṯāy bə·nê ’aš·pā·ṯōwWLC · 13

14

I am a laughingstock to all my people; they mock me in song all day long…

הָיִ֤יתִי שְּׂחֹק֙ לְכָל־ עַמִּ֔י נְגִינָתָ֖ם כָּל־ הַיּֽוֹם׃ hā·yî·ṯî śə·ḥōq lə·ḵāl ‘am·mî nə·ḡî·nā·ṯām kāl- hay·yō·wmWLC · 14

15

He has filled me with bitterness; He has intoxicated me with wormwood.

הִשְׂבִּיעַ֥נִי בַמְּרוֹרִ֖ים הִרְוַ֥נִי לַעֲנָֽה׃ס hiś·bî·‘a·nî ḇam·mə·rō·w·rîm hir·wa·nî la·‘ă·nāhWLC · 15

16

He has ground my teeth with gravel and trampled me in the dust.

𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤓𐤎 𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤇𐤑𐤑 𐤄𐤊𐤐𐤉𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤀𐤐𐤓

וַיַּגְרֵ֤ס שִׁנָּ֔י בֶּֽחָצָץ֙ הִכְפִּישַׁ֖נִי בָּאֵֽפֶר׃ way·yaḡ·rês šin·nāy be·ḥā·ṣāṣ hiḵ·pî·ša·nî bā·’ê·p̄erWLC · 16

17

My soul has been deprived of peace; I have forgotten what prosperity is.

𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤆𐤍𐤇 𐤌𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤈𐤅𐤁𐤄

נַפְשִׁ֖י וַתִּזְנַ֧ח מִשָּׁל֛וֹם נָשִׁ֥יתִי טוֹבָֽה׃ nap̄·šî wat·tiz·naḥ miš·šā·lō·wm nā·šî·ṯî ṭō·w·ḇāhWLC · 17

18

So I say, “My strength has perished, along with my hope from the LORD.”

וָאֹמַר֙ נִצְחִ֔י אָבַ֣ד וְתוֹחַלְתִּ֖י מֵיְהוָֽה׃ס wā·’ō·mar niṣ·ḥî ’ā·ḇaḏ wə·ṯō·w·ḥal·tî Yah·wehWLC · 18

The Prophet’s Hope

Remember my affliction and wandering, the wormwood and the gall.

𐤆𐤊𐤓 𐤏𐤍𐤉𐤉 𐤅𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤃𐤉 𐤋𐤏𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤓𐤀𐤔

זְכָר־ עָנְיִ֥י וּמְרוּדִ֖י לַעֲנָ֥ה וָרֹֽאשׁ׃ zə·ḵār- ‘ā·nə·yî ū·mə·rū·ḏî la·‘ă·nāh wā·rōšWLC · 19

20

Surely my soul remembers and is humbled within me.

𐤆𐤊𐤅𐤓 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤉 𐤕𐤆𐤊𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤉𐤇 𐤏𐤋𐤉

זָכ֣וֹר נַפְשִֽׁי׃ תִּזְכּ֔וֹר וְתָשִׁיחַ עָלַ֖י zā·ḵō·wr nap̄·šî tiz·kō·wr wə·ṯå̄·šī·aḥ ‘ā·layWLC · 20

21

Yet I call this to mind, and therefore… I have hope:

𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤁 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤁𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤍 𐤀𐤅𐤇𐤉𐤋𐤎

אָשִׁ֥יב זֹ֛את אֶל־ לִבִּ֖י עַל־ כֵּ֥ן אוֹחִֽיל׃ס ’ā·šîḇ zōṯ ’el- lib·bî ‘al- kên ’ō·w·ḥîlWLC · 21

22

Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail.

𐤊𐤉 𐤇𐤎𐤃𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤓𐤇𐤌𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤊𐤋𐤅

כִּ֣י חַֽסְדֵ֤י יְהוָה֙ לֹא־ תָ֔מְנוּ כִּ֥י רַחֲמָֽיו׃ לֹא־ כָל֖וּ kî ḥas·ḏê Yah·weh lō- ṯā·mə·nū kî ra·ḥă·māw lō- ḵā·lūWLC · 22

23

They are new every morning…; great is Your faithfulness!

𐤇𐤃𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤊

חֲדָשִׁים֙ לַבְּקָרִ֔ים רַבָּ֖ה אֱמוּנָתֶֽךָ׃ ḥă·ḏā·šîm lab·bə·qā·rîm rab·bāh ’ĕ·mū·nā·ṯe·ḵāWLC · 23

24

“The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore… I will hope in Him.”

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤇𐤋𐤒𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤄 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤍 𐤀𐤅𐤇𐤉𐤋 𐤋𐤅𐤎

יְהוָה֙ חֶלְקִ֤י אָמְרָ֣ה נַפְשִׁ֔י עַל־ כֵּ֖ן אוֹחִ֥יל לֽוֹ׃ס Yah·weh ḥel·qî ’ā·mə·rāh nap̄·šî ‘al- kên ’ō·w·ḥîl lōwWLC · 24

25

The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤋𐤒𐤅𐤅 𐤋𐤍𐤐𐤔 𐤕𐤃𐤓𐤔𐤍𐤅

יְהוָה֙ ט֤וֹב לְקוָֹ֔ו לְנֶ֖פֶשׁ תִּדְרְשֶֽׁנּוּ׃ Yah·weh ṭō·wḇ lə·qōw lə·ne·p̄eš tiḏ·rə·šen·nūWLC · 25

26

It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD.

𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤉𐤋 𐤅𐤃𐤅𐤌𐤌 𐤋𐤕𐤔𐤅𐤏𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

ט֤וֹב וְיָחִיל֙ וְדוּמָ֔ם לִתְשׁוּעַ֖ת יְהוָֽה׃ ṭō·wḇ wə·yā·ḥîl wə·ḏū·mām liṯ·šū·‘aṯ Yah·wehWLC · 26

27

It is good for a man… to bear the yoke while he is still young.

𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤋𐤂𐤁𐤓 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤀 𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤏𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤅𐤎

ט֣וֹב לַגֶּ֔בֶר כִּֽי־ יִשָּׂ֥א עֹ֖ל בִּנְעוּרָֽיו׃ס ṭō·wḇ lag·ge·ḇer kî- yiś·śā ‘ōl bin·‘ū·rāwWLC · 27

28

Let him sit alone in silence, for [the LORD] has laid it upon him.

𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤁𐤃𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤍𐤈𐤋 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅

יֵשֵׁ֤ב בָּדָד֙ וְיִדֹּ֔ם כִּ֥י נָטַ֖ל עָלָֽיו׃ yê·šêḇ bā·ḏāḏ wə·yid·dōm kî nā·ṭal ‘ā·lāwWLC · 28

29

Let him bury his face in the dust— perhaps there is still hope.

𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤐𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤏𐤐𐤓 𐤀𐤅𐤋𐤉 𐤉𐤔 𐤕𐤒𐤅𐤄

יִתֵּ֤ן פִּ֔יהוּ בֶּֽעָפָר֙ אוּלַ֖י יֵ֥שׁ תִּקְוָֽה׃ yit·tên pî·hū be·‘ā·p̄ār ’ū·lay yêš tiq·wāhWLC · 29

30

Let him offer his cheek to the one who would strike him; let him be filled with reproach.

𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤇𐤉 𐤋𐤌𐤊𐤄𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤏 𐤁𐤇𐤓𐤐𐤄𐤎

יִתֵּ֧ן לֶ֖חִי לְמַכֵּ֛הוּ יִשְׂבַּ֥ע בְּחֶרְפָּֽה׃ס yit·tên le·ḥî lə·mak·kê·hū yiś·ba‘ bə·ḥer·pāhWLC · 30

31

For the Lord will not cast us off forever.

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤆𐤍𐤇 𐤋𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌

כִּ֣י אֲדֹנָֽי׃ לֹ֥א יִזְנַ֛ח לְעוֹלָ֖ם kî ’ă·ḏō·nāy lō yiz·naḥ lə·‘ō·w·lāmWLC · 31

32

Even if He causes grief, He will show compassion according to His abundant loving devotion.

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤌 𐤄𐤅𐤂𐤄 𐤅𐤓𐤇𐤌 𐤊𐤓𐤁 𐤇𐤎𐤃𐤅

כִּ֣י אִם־ הוֹגָ֔ה וְרִחַ֖ם כְּרֹ֥ב חַסְדּוֹ׃ kî ’im- hō·w·ḡāh wə·ri·ḥam kə·rōḇ ḥas·dōWLC · 32

33

For He does not willingly afflict or grieve the sons of men.

𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤌𐤋𐤁𐤅 𐤏𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤄 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤔𐤎

כִּ֣י לֹ֤א מִלִּבּ֔וֹ עִנָּה֙ וַיַּגֶּ֖ה בְנֵי־ אִֽישׁ׃ס kî lō mil·lib·bōw ‘in·nāh way·yag·geh bə·nê- ʾīšWLC · 33

34

To crush underfoot… all the prisoners of the land,

𐤋𐤃𐤊𐤀 𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤎𐤉𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤑

לְדַכֵּא֙ תַּ֣חַת רַגְלָ֔יו כֹּ֖ל אֲסִ֥ירֵי אָֽרֶץ׃ lə·ḏak·kê ta·ḥaṯ raḡ·lāw kōl ’ă·sî·rê ’ā·reṣWLC · 34

35

to deny a man justice before… the Most High,

𐤋𐤄𐤈𐤅𐤕 𐤂𐤁𐤓 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤍𐤂𐤃 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤍

לְהַטּוֹת֙ גָּ֔בֶר מִשְׁפַּט־ נֶ֖גֶד פְּנֵ֥י עֶלְיֽוֹן׃ lə·haṭ·ṭō·wṯ gā·ḇer miš·paṭ- ne·ḡeḏ pə·nê ‘el·yō·wnWLC · 35

36

to subvert a man in his lawsuit— of these the Lord does not approve.

𐤋𐤏𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤁𐤅 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤓𐤀𐤄𐤎

לְעַוֵּ֤ת אָדָם֙ בְּרִיב֔וֹ אֲדֹנָ֖י לֹ֥א רָאָֽה׃ס lə·‘aw·wêṯ ’ā·ḏām bə·rî·ḇōw ’ă·ḏō·nāy lō rā·’āhWLC · 36

God’s Justice

37

Who… has spoken and it came to pass, unless the Lord has ordained it?

𐤌𐤉 𐤆𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤑𐤅𐤄

מִ֣י זֶ֤ה אָמַר֙ וַתֶּ֔הִי לֹ֥א אֲדֹנָ֖י צִוָּֽה׃ mî zeh ’ā·mar wat·te·hî lō ’ă·ḏō·nāy ṣiw·wāhWLC · 37

38

Do not both adversity and good come from the mouth of the Most High?

𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤕𐤑𐤀 𐤌𐤐𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤍

לֹ֣א הָרָע֖וֹת וְהַטּֽוֹב׃ תֵצֵ֔א מִפִּ֤י עֶלְיוֹן֙ lō hā·rā·‘ō·wṯ wə·haṭ·ṭō·wḇ ṯê·ṣê mip·pî ‘el·yō·wnWLC · 38

39

Why should any mortal man complain, in view of [his] sins?

𐤌𐤄 𐤇𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤉𐤕𐤀𐤅𐤍𐤍 𐤏𐤋 𐤂𐤁𐤓 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤅𐤎

מַה־ חָ֔י אָדָ֣ם יִּתְאוֹנֵן֙ עַל־ גֶּ֖בֶר חֶטְאוֹ׃ס mah- ḥāy ’ā·ḏām yiṯ·’ō·w·nên ‘al- ge·ḇer ḥɛṭ·ʾōWLC · 39

40

Let us examine and test our ways, and turn back to the LORD.

𐤍𐤇𐤐𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤍𐤇𐤒𐤓𐤄 𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤄 𐤏𐤃 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

נַחְפְּשָׂ֤ה וְֽנַחְקֹ֔רָה דְרָכֵ֙ינוּ֙ וְנָשׁ֖וּבָה עַד־ יְהוָֽה׃ naḥ·pə·śāh wə·naḥ·qō·rāh ḏə·rā·ḵê·nū wə·nā·šū·ḇāh ‘aḏ- Yah·wehWLC · 40

41

Let us lift up our hearts and hands to God in heaven:

𐤍𐤔𐤀 𐤋𐤁𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌

נִשָּׂ֤א לְבָבֵ֙נוּ֙ אֶל־ כַּפָּ֔יִם אֶל־ אֵ֖ל בַּשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ niś·śā lə·ḇā·ḇê·nū ’el- kap·pā·yim ’el- ’êl baš·šā·mā·yimWLC · 41

“We have sinned and rebelled; You have not forgiven.”

𐤍𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤐𐤔𐤏𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤎𐤋𐤇𐤕𐤎

You have covered Yourself in anger and pursued us; You have killed without pity.

You have covered Yourself with a cloud that no prayer can pass through.

You have made us scum and refuse among the nations.

All our enemies open their mouths against us.

Panic and pitfall have come upon us— devastation and destruction.

Streams of tears flow from my eyes over the destruction of the daughter of my people.

My eyes overflow unceasingly…, without relief,

until the LORD looks down from heaven and sees.

עַד־ יְהוָ֖ה יַשְׁקִ֣יף מִשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ וְיֵ֔רֶא ‘aḏ- Yah·weh yaš·qîp̄ miš·šā·mā·yim wə·yê·reWLC · 50

My eyes bring grief to my soul because of all the daughters of my city.

Without cause my enemies hunted me… like a bird.

They dropped me alive into a pit and cast stones upon me.

The waters flowed over my head, and I thought I was going to die.

I called on Your name, O LORD, out of the depths of the Pit.

You heard my plea: “Do not ignore… my cry for relief.”

You drew near when I called on You; You said, “Do not be afraid.”

You defend my cause, O Lord; You redeem my life.

You have seen, O LORD, the wrong done to me; vindicate my cause!

You have seen all their malice, all their plots against me.

O LORD, You have heard their insults, all their plots against me—

the slander and murmuring of my assailants against me all day long.

When they sit and when they rise, see how vvv they mock me in song.

שִׁבְתָּ֤ם וְקִֽימָתָם֙ הַבִּ֔יטָה אֲנִ֖י מַנְגִּינָתָֽם׃ס šiḇ·tām wə·qî·mā·ṯām hab·bî·ṭāh ’ă·nî man·gî·nā·ṯāmWLC · 63

You will pay them back what they deserve, O LORD, according to the work of their hands.

Put a veil of anguish over their hearts; may Your curse be upon them!

You will pursue them in anger and exterminate them from under [Your] heavens, O LORD.
