Chapter 37

Jeremiah Warns Zedekiah

1

Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon {made} Zedekiah son of Josiah the king of Judah, and he reigned… in place of Coniah son of Jehoiakim.

𐤍𐤁𐤅𐤊𐤃𐤓𐤀𐤑𐤓 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤁𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤊𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤉𐤌

נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֥ר מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר צִדְקִיָּ֖הוּ בֶּן־ יֹֽאשִׁיָּ֑הוּ הִמְלִ֛יךְ בְּאֶ֥רֶץ יְהוּדָֽה׃ וַיִּ֨מְלָךְ־ מֶ֔לֶךְ תַּ֗חַת כָּנְיָ֙הוּ֙ בֶּן־ יְה֣וֹיָקִ֔ים nə·ḇū·ḵaḏ·reṣ·ṣar me·leḵ- bā·ḇel ’ă·šer ṣiḏ·qî·yā·hū ben- yō·šî·yā·hū him·lîḵ bə·’e·reṣ yə·hū·ḏāh way·yim·lāḵ- me·leḵ ta·ḥaṯ kā·nə·yā·hū ben- yə·hō·w·yā·qîmWLC · 1

But he and his officers and the people of the land refused to obey the words that the LORD had spoken through Jeremiah the prophet.

ה֥וּא וַעֲבָדָ֖יו וְעַ֣ם הָאָ֑רֶץ אֶל־ וְלֹ֥א שָׁמַ֛ע דִּבְרֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבֶּ֔ר בְּיַ֖ד יִרְמְיָ֥הוּ הַנָּבִֽיא׃ hū wa·‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw wə·‘am hā·’ā·reṣ ’el- wə·lō šā·ma‘ diḇ·rê Yah·weh ’ă·šer dib·ber bə·yaḏ yir·mə·yā·hū han·nā·ḇîWLC · 2

Yet King Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the priest, the son of Maaseiah, to Jeremiah the prophet with the message, “Please pray to the LORD our God for us!”

הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ צִדְקִיָּ֜הוּ אֶת־ וַיִּשְׁלַח֩ יְהוּכַ֣ל בֶּן־ שֶֽׁלֶמְיָ֗ה וְאֶת־ צְפַנְיָ֤הוּ הַכֹּהֵ֔ן בֶן־ מַֽעֲשֵׂיָה֙ אֶל־ יִרְמְיָ֥הוּ הַנָּבִ֖יא לֵאמֹ֑ר נָ֣א הִתְפַּלֶּל־ אֶל־ יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃ בַעֲדֵ֔נוּ ham·me·leḵ ṣiḏ·qî·yā·hū ’eṯ- way·yiš·laḥ yə·hū·ḵal ben- še·lem·yāh wə·’eṯ- ṣə·p̄an·yā·hū hak·kō·hên ḇen- ma·‘ă·śê·yāh ’el- yir·mə·yā·hū han·nā·ḇî lê·mōr nā hiṯ·pal·lel- ’el- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū ḇa·‘ă·ḏê·nūWLC · 3

Now Jeremiah was free to come and go among the people, for they had not yet put him in prison…

וְיִרְמְיָ֕הוּ בָּ֥א וְיֹצֵ֖א בְּת֣וֹךְ הָעָ֑ם וְלֹֽא־ נָתְנ֥וּ אֹת֖וֹ בֵּ֥ית הַכְּלִיא׃ wə·yir·mə·yā·hū bā wə·yō·ṣê bə·ṯō·wḵ hā·‘ām wə·lō- nā·ṯə·nū ’ō·ṯōw bêṯ hak·kə·līWLC · 4

Pharaoh’s army had left Egypt, and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard the report, they withdrew from… Jerusalem.

𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤇𐤉𐤋 𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤊𐤔𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤐

פַּרְעֹ֖ה וְחֵ֥יל יָצָ֣א מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם הַכַּשְׂדִּ֜ים הַצָּרִ֤ים יְרוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ אֶת־ וַיִּשְׁמְע֨וּ שִׁמְעָ֔ם וַיֵּ֣עָל֔וּ מֵעַ֖ל עַל־ יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃פ par·‘ōh wə·ḥêl yā·ṣā mim·miṣ·rā·yim hak·kaś·dîm haṣ·ṣā·rîm yə·rū·šā·lim ’eṯ- way·yiš·mə·‘ū šim·‘ām way·yê·‘ā·lū mê·‘al ‘al- yə·rū·šā·limWLC · 5

Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet -:

𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

דְּבַר־ יְהוָ֔ה וַֽיְהִי֙ אֶל־ יִרְמְיָ֥הוּ הַנָּבִ֖יא לֵאמֹֽר׃ də·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’el- yir·mə·yā·hū han·nā·ḇî lê·mōrWLC · 6

“This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says that you are to tell… the king of Judah, who sent you to Me: Behold, Pharaoh’s army, which has marched out to help you, will go back to its own land of Egypt.

𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤄 𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤄𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤃𐤓𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤇𐤉𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤋𐤏𐤆𐤓𐤄 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤔𐤁 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤅 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌

כֹּֽה־ יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אָמַ֤ר כֹּ֤ה תֹֽאמְרוּ֙ אֶל־ מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֔ה הַשֹּׁלֵ֧חַ אֶתְכֶ֛ם לְדָרְשֵׁ֑נִי אֵלַ֖י הִנֵּ֣ה׀ פַּרְעֹ֗ה חֵ֣יל הַיֹּצֵ֤א לְעֶזְרָ֔ה לָכֶם֙ שָׁ֥ב לְאַרְצ֖וֹ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ kōh- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl ’ā·mar kōh ṯō·mə·rū ’el- me·leḵ yə·hū·ḏāh haš·šō·lê·aḥ ’eṯ·ḵem lə·ḏā·rə·šê·nî ’ê·lay hin·nêh par·‘ōh ḥêl hay·yō·ṣê lə·‘ez·rāh lā·ḵem šāḇ lə·’ar·ṣōw miṣ·rā·yimWLC · 7

Then the Chaldeans will return and fight against this city. They will capture it and burn it down…

הַכַּשְׂדִּ֔ים וְשָׁ֙בוּ֙ וְנִלְחֲמ֖וּ עַל־ הַזֹּ֑את הָעִ֣יר וּלְכָדֻ֖הָ וּשְׂרָפֻ֥הָ בָאֵֽשׁ׃ס hak·kaś·dîm wə·šā·ḇū wə·nil·ḥă·mū ‘al- haz·zōṯ hā·‘îr ū·lə·ḵā·ḏu·hā ū·śə·rā·p̄u·hā ḇā·’êšWLC · 8

This is what the LORD says: Do not deceive yourselves by saying, ‘The Chaldeans will go away for good…,’ for they will not -!

𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤔𐤀𐤅 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤊𐤔𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤅

כֹּ֣ה׀ יְהוָ֗ה אָמַ֣ר אַל־ תַּשִּׁ֤אוּ נַפְשֹֽׁתֵיכֶם֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הַכַּשְׂדִּ֑ים הָלֹ֛ךְ יֵלְכ֥וּ מֵעָלֵ֖ינוּ כִּי־ לֹ֖א יֵלֵֽכוּ׃ kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar ’al- taš·ši·’ū nap̄·šō·ṯê·ḵem lê·mōr hak·kaś·dîm hā·lōḵ yê·lə·ḵū mê·‘ā·lê·nū kî- lō yê·lê·ḵūWLC · 9

Indeed, if you were to strike down the entire army of the Chaldeans that is fighting against you, and only wounded men remained… vvv in their tents, they would still get up and burn this city down -.”

כִּ֣י אִם־ הִכִּיתֶ֞ם כָּל־ חֵ֤יל כַּשְׂדִּים֙ הַנִּלְחָמִ֣ים אִתְּכֶ֔ם מְדֻקָּרִ֑ים אֲנָשִׁ֖ים וְנִ֨שְׁאֲרוּ בָ֔ם אִ֤ישׁ בְּאָהֳלוֹ֙ יָק֔וּמוּ הַזֹּ֖את הָעִ֥יר וְשָֽׂרְפ֛וּ אֶת־ בָּאֵֽשׁ׃ kî ’im- hik·kî·ṯem kāl- ḥêl kaś·dîm han·nil·ḥā·mîm ’it·tə·ḵem mə·ḏuq·qā·rîm ’ă·nā·šîm wə·niš·’ă·rū ḇām ’îš bə·’ā·ho·lōw yā·qū·mū haz·zōṯ hā·‘îr wə·śā·rə·p̄ū ’eṯ- bā·’êšWLC · 10

Jeremiah Imprisoned

  • When the Chaldean army withdrew from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh’s army,

𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤊𐤔𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤇𐤉𐤋 𐤁𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄𐤎 𐤇𐤉𐤋

וְהָיָ֗ה הַכַּשְׂדִּ֔ים חֵ֣יל בְּהֵֽעָלוֹת֙ מֵעַ֖ל יְרֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם מִפְּנֵ֖י פַּרְעֹֽה׃ס חֵ֥יל wə·hā·yāh hak·kaś·dîm ḥêl bə·hê·‘ā·lō·wṯ mê·‘al yə·rū·šā·lim mip·pə·nê par·‘ōh ḥêlWLC · 11

Jeremiah started to leave Jerusalem to go to the land of Benjamin to claim his portion there among the people.

𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤌𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤋𐤋𐤊𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌𐤍 𐤋𐤇𐤋𐤒 𐤌𐤔𐤌 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤏𐤌

יִרְמְיָ֙הוּ֙ וַיֵּצֵ֤א מִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם לָלֶ֖כֶת אֶ֣רֶץ בִּנְיָמִ֑ן לַחֲלִ֥ק מִשָּׁ֖ם בְּת֥וֹךְ הָעָֽם׃ yir·mə·yā·hū way·yê·ṣê mî·rū·šā·lim lā·le·ḵeṯ ’e·reṣ bin·yā·min la·ḥă·liq miš·šām bə·ṯō·wḵ hā·‘āmWLC · 12

But when he reached the Gate of Benjamin, the captain of the guard -, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah, seized [him]… and said, “You are deserting to the Chaldeans!”

𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤁𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌𐤍 𐤁𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤒𐤃𐤕 𐤅𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤅 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤇𐤍𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤐𐤔 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤍𐤐𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤊𐤔𐤃𐤉𐤌

ה֞וּא וַיְהִי־ בְּשַׁ֣עַר בִּנְיָמִ֗ן בַּ֣עַל פְּקִדֻ֔ת וְשָׁם֙ וּשְׁמוֹ֙ יִרְאִיָּ֔יה בֶּן־ שֶֽׁלֶמְיָ֖ה בֶּן־ חֲנַנְיָ֑ה וַיִּתְפֹּ֞שׂ אֶֽת־ יִרְמְיָ֤הוּ הַנָּבִיא֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אַתָּ֥ה נֹפֵֽל׃ אֶל־ הַכַּשְׂדִּ֖ים hū way·hî- bə·ša·‘ar bin·yā·min ba·‘al pə·qi·ḏuṯ wə·šām ū·šə·mōw yir·’î·yāyh ben- še·lem·yāh ben- ḥă·nan·yāh way·yiṯ·pōś ’eṯ- yir·mə·yā·hū han·nā·ḇî lê·mōr ’at·tāh nō·p̄êl ’el- hak·kaś·dîmWLC · 13

“That is a lie,” Jeremiah replied. “I am not deserting to the Chaldeans!” But Irijah would not listen to him; instead, he arrested Jeremiah and took him to the officials.

שֶׁ֗קֶר יִרְמְיָ֜הוּ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵינֶ֤נִּי נֹפֵל֙ עַל־ הַכַּשְׂדִּ֔ים יִרְאִיָּיה֙ וְלֹ֥א שָׁמַ֖ע אֵלָ֑יו וַיִּתְפֹּ֤שׂ בְּיִרְמְיָ֔הוּ וַיְבִאֵ֖הוּ אֶל־ הַשָּׂרִֽים׃ še·qer yir·mə·yā·hū way·yō·mer ’ê·nen·nî nō·p̄êl ‘al- hak·kaś·dîm yir·’î·yāyh wə·lō šā·ma‘ ’ê·lāw way·yiṯ·pōś bə·yir·mə·yā·hū way·ḇi·’ê·hū ’el- haś·śā·rîmWLC · 14

The officials were angry with Jeremiah, and they beat him and placed him in jail… in the house of Jonathan the scribe, for it had been made into a prison…

הַשָּׂרִ֛ים וַיִּקְצְפ֧וּ עַֽל־ יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ וְהִכּ֣וּ אֹת֑וֹ וְנָתְנ֨וּ אוֹת֜וֹ בֵּ֣ית הָאֵס֗וּר בֵּ֚ית יְהוֹנָתָ֣ן הַסֹּפֵ֔ר כִּֽי־ אֹת֥וֹ עָשׂ֖וּ לְבֵ֥ית הַכֶּֽלֶא׃ haś·śā·rîm way·yiq·ṣə·p̄ū ‘al- yir·mə·yā·hū wə·hik·kū ’ō·ṯōw wə·nā·ṯə·nū ’ō·w·ṯōw bêṯ hā·’ê·sūr bêṯ yə·hō·w·nā·ṯān has·sō·p̄êr kî- ’ō·ṯōw ‘ā·śū lə·ḇêṯ hak·ke·leWLC · 15

So Jeremiah went into a cell… in the dungeon and remained there… a long time…

כִּ֣י יִרְמְיָ֛הוּ בָ֧א אֶל־ בֵּ֥ית הַבּ֖וֹר וְאֶל־ הַֽחֲנֻ֑יוֹת וַיֵּֽשֶׁב־ שָׁ֥ם יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ רַבִּֽים׃פ יָמִ֥ים kî yir·mə·yā·hū ḇā ’el- bêṯ hab·bō·wr wə·’el- ha·ḥă·nu·yō·wṯ way·yê·šeḇ- šām yir·mə·yā·hū rab·bîm yā·mîmWLC · 16

Later, King Zedekiah sent for [Jeremiah] and received him in his palace, where he asked him privately, “Is there a word from the LORD?” “There is,”… Jeremiah replied… “You will be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.”

Then Jeremiah asked… King Zedekiah, “How have I sinned against you or your servants or these people, that you have put me in prison…?

Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, claiming, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you… or this land’?

וְאַיּוֹ נְבִ֣יאֵיכֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־ נִבְּא֥וּ לָכֶ֖ם לֵאמֹ֑ר מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶל֙ לֹֽא־ יָבֹ֤א עֲלֵיכֶ֔ם וְעַ֖ל הַזֹּֽאת׃ הָאָ֥רֶץ wə·ʾay·yō nə·ḇî·’ê·ḵem ’ă·šer- nib·bə·’ū lā·ḵem lê·mōr me·leḵ- bā·ḇel lō- yā·ḇō ‘ă·lê·ḵem wə·‘al haz·zōṯ hā·’ā·reṣWLC · 19

But now please listen, O my lord the king. May my petition come… before you. Do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the scribe, or I will die there.”

וְעַתָּ֕ה נָ֖א שְֽׁמַֽע־ אֲדֹנִ֣י הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ תְחִנָּתִי֙ תִּפָּל־ נָ֤א לְפָנֶ֔יךָ וְאַל־ תְּשִׁבֵ֗נִי בֵּ֚ית יְהוֹנָתָ֣ן הַסֹּפֵ֔ר וְלֹ֥א אָמ֖וּת שָֽׁם׃ wə·‘at·tāh nā šə·ma‘- ’ă·ḏō·nî ham·me·leḵ ṯə·ḥin·nā·ṯî tip·pāl- nā lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā wə·’al- tə·ši·ḇê·nî bêṯ yə·hō·w·nā·ṯān has·sō·p̄êr wə·lō ’ā·mūṯ šāmWLC · 20

So King Zedekiah gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed in the courtyard of the guard and given a loaf of bread daily from the street of the bakers, until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.
