Chapter 33

The Excellence of the Restored Nation

1

While [Jeremiah] was still confined in the courtyard of the guard, the word of the LORD came to [him] a second time -:

𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤏𐤅𐤃𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤑𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤇𐤑𐤓 𐤄𐤌𐤈𐤓𐤄 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

וְהוּא֙ עוֹדֶ֣נּוּ עָצ֔וּר בַּחֲצַ֥ר הַמַּטָּרָ֖ה דְבַר־ יְהוָ֛ה וַיְהִ֧י אֶֽל־ יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ שֵׁנִ֑ית לֵאמֹֽר׃ wə·hū ‘ō·w·ḏen·nū ‘ā·ṣūr ba·ḥă·ṣar ham·maṭ·ṭā·rāh ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’el- yir·mə·yā·hū šê·nîṯ lê·mōrWLC · 1

“Thus says the LORD who made the earth, the LORD who formed it and established it, the LORD is His name:

𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤅𐤑𐤓 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤄𐤊𐤉𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤔𐤌𐤅

כֹּֽה־ אָמַ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה עֹשָׂ֑הּ יְהוָ֗ה יוֹצֵ֥ר אוֹתָ֛הּ לַהֲכִינָ֖הּ יְהוָ֥ה שְׁמֽוֹ׃ kōh- ’ā·mar Yah·weh ‘ō·śāh Yah·weh yō·w·ṣêr ’ō·w·ṯāh la·hă·ḵî·nāh Yah·weh šə·mōwWLC · 2

Call to Me, and I will answer and show you great and unsearchable things you do not know.

𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤏𐤍𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤂𐤉𐤃𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤁𐤑𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤌𐤎

קְרָ֥א אֵלַ֖י וְאֶעֱנֶ֑ךָּ וְאַגִּ֧ידָה לְּךָ֛ גְּדֹל֥וֹת וּבְצֻר֖וֹת לֹ֥א יְדַעְתָּֽם׃ס qə·rā ’ê·lay wə·’e·‘ĕ·ne·kā wə·’ag·gî·ḏāh lə·ḵā gə·ḏō·lō·wṯ ū·ḇə·ṣu·rō·wṯ lō yə·ḏa‘·tāmWLC · 3

For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says about the houses of this… city and the palaces of the kings of Judah that have been torn down for defense against the siege ramps… and the sword:

𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤕𐤉 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤁𐤕𐤉 𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤄𐤍𐤕𐤑𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤎𐤋𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤇𐤓𐤁

כִּי֩ כֹ֨ה יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אָמַ֤ר עַל־ בָּתֵּי֙ הַזֹּ֔את וְעַל־ הָעִ֣יר בָּתֵּ֖י מַלְכֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה הַנְּתֻצִ֕ים אֶל־ הַסֹּלְל֖וֹת וְאֶל־ הֶחָֽרֶב׃ kî ḵōh Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl ’ā·mar ‘al- bāt·tê haz·zōṯ wə·‘al- hā·‘îr bāt·tê mal·ḵê yə·hū·ḏāh han·nə·ṯu·ṣîm ’el- has·sō·lə·lō·wṯ wə·’el- he·ḥā·reḇWLC · 4

  • The Chaldeans are coming to fight and to fill [those places] with the corpses of the men I will strike down in My anger and in My wrath. I have hidden My face from this city because of all its wickedness.

אֶת־ הַכַּשְׂדִּ֔ים בָּאִ֗ים לְהִלָּחֵם֙ וּלְמַלְאָם֙ אֶת־ פִּגְרֵ֣י הָאָדָ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־ הִכֵּ֥יתִי בְאַפִּ֖י וּבַחֲמָתִ֑י וַאֲשֶׁ֨ר הִסְתַּ֤רְתִּי פָנַי֙ הַזֹּ֔את מֵהָעִ֣יר עַ֖ל כָּל־ רָעָתָֽם׃ ’eṯ- hak·kaś·dîm bā·’îm lə·hil·lā·ḥêm ū·lə·mal·’ām ’eṯ- piḡ·rê hā·’ā·ḏām ’ă·šer- hik·kê·ṯî ḇə·’ap·pî ū·ḇa·ḥă·mā·ṯî wa·’ă·šer his·tar·tî p̄ā·nay haz·zōṯ mê·hā·‘îr ‘al kāl- rā·‘ā·ṯāmWLC · 5

Nevertheless, I will bring to it health and healing, and I will heal [its people] and reveal to them the abundance of peace and truth.

הִנְנִ֧י מַעֲלֶה־ לָּ֛הּ אֲרֻכָ֥ה וּמַרְפֵּ֖א וּרְפָאתִ֑ים וְגִלֵּיתִ֣י לָהֶ֔ם עֲתֶ֥רֶת שָׁל֖וֹם וֶאֱמֶֽת׃ hin·nî ma·‘ă·leh- lāh ’ă·ru·ḵāh ū·mar·pê ū·rə·p̄ā·ṯîm wə·ḡil·lê·ṯî lā·hem ‘ă·ṯe·reṯ šā·lō·wm we·’ĕ·meṯWLC · 6

I will restore Judah and Israel from captivity and will rebuild them as in former times.

𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤁𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤍𐤄

וַהֲשִֽׁבֹתִי֙ אֶת־ יְהוּדָ֔ה וְאֵ֖ת שְׁב֣וּת יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל שְׁב֣וּת וּבְנִתִ֖ים כְּבָרִֽאשֹׁנָֽה׃ wa·hă·ši·ḇō·ṯî ’eṯ- yə·hū·ḏāh wə·’êṯ šə·ḇūṯ yiś·rā·’êl šə·ḇūṯ ū·ḇə·ni·ṯîm kə·ḇā·ri·šō·nāhWLC · 7

And I will cleanse them from all the iniquity they have committed against Me, and will forgive all… their sins of rebellion against Me.

𐤅𐤈𐤄𐤓𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤅 𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤎𐤋𐤇𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤊𐤅𐤋 𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤅 𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤐𐤔𐤏𐤅 𐤁𐤉

וְטִ֣הַרְתִּ֔ים מִכָּל־ עֲוֺנָ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֣ר חָֽטְאוּ־ לִ֑י וְסָלַחְתִּ֗י לְכוֹל עֲוֺנֽוֹתֵיהֶם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר חָֽטְאוּ־ לִ֔י וַאֲשֶׁ֖ר פָּ֥שְׁעוּ בִֽי׃ wə·ṭi·har·tîm mik·kāl ‘ă·wō·nām ’ă·šer ḥā·ṭə·’ū- lî wə·sā·laḥ·tî lə·ḵōl ‘ă·wō·nō·w·ṯê·hem ’ă·šer ḥā·ṭə·’ū- lî wa·’ă·šer pā·šə·‘ū ḇîWLC · 8

So [this city] will bring Me renown, joy, praise, and glory before all the nations of the earth, who will hear of all the good I do for it. They will tremble in awe because of all the goodness… and prosperity that I will provide for it.

וְהָ֣יְתָה לִּ֗י לְשֵׁ֤ם שָׂשׂוֹן֙ לִתְהִלָּ֣ה וּלְתִפְאֶ֔רֶת לְכֹ֖ל גּוֹיֵ֣י הָאָ֑רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִשְׁמְע֜וּ אֶת־ כָּל־ הַטּוֹבָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר אָֽנֹכִי֙ עֹשֶׂ֣ה אֹתָ֔ם וְרָֽגְז֗וּ וּפָחֲד֣וּ עַ֤ל כָּל־ הַטּוֹבָה֙ וְעַ֣ל כָּל־ הַשָּׁל֔וֹם אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָֽנֹכִ֖י עֹ֥שֶׂה לָּֽהּ׃ס wə·hā·yə·ṯāh lî lə·šêm śā·śō·wn liṯ·hil·lāh ū·lə·ṯip̄·’e·reṯ lə·ḵōl gō·w·yê hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer yiš·mə·‘ū ’eṯ- kāl- haṭ·ṭō·w·ḇāh ’ă·šer ’ā·nō·ḵî ‘ō·śeh ’ō·ṯām wə·rā·ḡə·zū ū·p̄ā·ḥă·ḏū ‘al kāl- haṭ·ṭō·w·ḇāh wə·‘al kāl- haš·šā·lō·wm ’ă·šer ’ā·nō·ḵî ‘ō·śeh lāhWLC · 9

This is what the LORD says: In this place you say is a wasteland… without man [or] beast, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem that are deserted— inhabited by neither man nor beast— there will be heard again

𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤁𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤌𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤁𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤏𐤓𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤇𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤄𐤍𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤁 𐤅𐤌𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤁𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤏𐤅𐤃

כֹּ֣ה׀ יְהוָ֗ה אָמַ֣ר הַזֶּה֒ בַּמָּקוֹם־ אֲשֶׁר֙ אַתֶּ֣ם אֹֽמְרִ֔ים חָרֵ֣ב ה֔וּא מֵאֵ֥ין אָדָ֖ם וּמֵאֵ֣ין בְּהֵמָ֑ה בְּעָרֵ֤י יְהוּדָה֙ וּבְחֻצ֣וֹת יְרוּשָׁלִַ֔ם הַֽנְשַׁמּ֗וֹת מֵאֵ֥ין יוֹשֵׁ֖ב וּמֵאֵ֥ין אָדָ֛ם וּמֵאֵ֥ין בְּהֵמָֽה׃ יִשָּׁמַ֣ע עוֹד֮ kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar haz·zeh bam·mā·qō·wm- ’ă·šer ’at·tem ’ō·mə·rîm ḥā·rêḇ hū mê·’ên ’ā·ḏām ū·mê·’ên bə·hê·māh bə·‘ā·rê yə·hū·ḏāh ū·ḇə·ḥu·ṣō·wṯ yə·rū·šā·lim han·šam·mō·wṯ mê·’ên yō·wō·šêḇ ū·mê·’ên ’ā·ḏām ū·mê·’ên bə·hê·māh yiš·šā·ma‘ ‘ō·wḏWLC · 10

the sounds of joy [and] gladness, the voices of the bride [and] bridegroom, and the voices of those bringing thank offerings into the house of the LORD, saying: ‘Give thanks to the LORD of Hosts, for the LORD is good; His loving devotion endures forever.’ For I will restore the land from captivity as in former times, says the LORD.

ק֣וֹל שָׂשׂ֞וֹן וְק֣וֹל שִׂמְחָ֗ה ק֣וֹל כַּלָּה֒ וְק֣וֹל חָתָן֮ ק֣וֹל מְבִאִ֥ים תּוֹדָ֖ה בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה אֹמְרִ֡ים הוֹדוּ֩ אֶת־ יְהוָ֨ה צְבָא֜וֹת כִּֽי־ יְהוָה֙ ט֤וֹב כִּֽי־ חַסְדּ֔וֹ לְעוֹלָ֣ם כִּֽי־ אָשִׁ֧יב אֶת־ הָאָ֛רֶץ שְׁבוּת־ כְּבָרִאשֹׁנָ֖ה אָמַ֥ר יְהוָֽה׃ס qō·wl śā·śō·wn wə·qō·wl śim·ḥāh qō·wl kal·lāh wə·qō·wl ḥā·ṯān qō·wl mə·ḇi·’îm tō·w·ḏāh bêṯ Yah·weh ’ō·mə·rîm hō·w·ḏū ’eṯ- Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ kî- Yah·weh ṭō·wḇ kî- ḥas·dōw lə·‘ō·w·lām kî- ’ā·šîḇ ’eṯ- hā·’ā·reṣ šə·ḇūṯ- kə·ḇā·ri·šō·nāh ’ā·mar Yah·wehWLC · 11

This is what the LORD of Hosts says: In this desolate place, without man… or beast, and in all its cities, there will once more be pastures for shepherds to rest [their] flocks.

𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤁𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤁𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤍𐤅𐤄 𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤓𐤁𐤑𐤉𐤌 𐤑𐤀𐤍

כֹּֽה־ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָאוֹת֒ אָמַר֮ הַזֶּ֗ה הֶחָרֵ֛ב בַּמָּק֣וֹם מֵֽאֵין־ אָדָ֥ם וְעַד־ בְּהֵמָ֖ה וּבְכָל־ עָרָ֑יו ע֞וֹד יִֽהְיֶ֣ה׀ נְוֵ֣ה רֹעִ֔ים מַרְבִּצִ֖ים צֹֽאן׃ kōh- Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ā·mar haz·zeh he·ḥā·rêḇ bam·mā·qō·wm mê·’ên- ’ā·ḏām wə·‘aḏ- bə·hê·māh ū·ḇə·ḵāl ‘ā·rāw ‘ō·wḏ yih·yeh nə·wêh rō·‘îm mar·bi·ṣîm ṣōnWLC · 12

In the cities of the hill country, the foothills, [and] the Negev, in the land of Benjamin and the cities surrounding Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, the flocks will again pass under the hands of the one who counts them, says the LORD.

בְּעָרֵ֨י הָהָ֜ר בְּעָרֵ֤י הַשְּׁפֵלָה֙ וּבְעָרֵ֣י הַנֶּ֔גֶב וּבְאֶ֧רֶץ בִּנְיָמִ֛ן וּבִסְבִיבֵ֥י יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם וּבְעָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה הַצֹּ֛אן עֹ֣ד תַּעֲבֹ֧רְנָה עַל־ יְדֵ֥י מוֹנֶ֖ה אָמַ֥ר יְהוָֽה׃ס bə·‘ā·rê hā·hār bə·‘ā·rê haš·šə·p̄ê·lāh ū·ḇə·‘ā·rê han·ne·ḡeḇ ū·ḇə·’e·reṣ bin·yā·min ū·ḇis·ḇî·ḇê yə·rū·šā·lim ū·ḇə·‘ā·rê yə·hū·ḏāh haṣ·ṣōn ‘ōḏ ta·‘ă·ḇō·rə·nāh ‘al- yə·ḏê mō·w·neh ’ā·mar Yah·wehWLC · 13

The Covenant with David

Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will fulfill the gracious promise that I have spoken to the house of Israel… and the house of Judah.

In those days and at that time I will cause to sprout for David a righteous Branch, and He will administer justice and righteousness in the land.

In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell securely…, and this is the name by which it will be called The LORD Our Righteousness.

For this is what the LORD says: David will never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel,

כִּי־ כֹ֖ה יְהוָ֑ה אָמַ֣ר לְדָוִ֔ד לֹֽא־ יִכָּרֵ֣ת אִ֕ישׁ יֹשֵׁ֖ב עַל־ כִּסֵּ֥א בֵֽית־ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ kî- ḵōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar lə·ḏā·wiḏ lō- yik·kā·rêṯ ’îš yō·šêḇ ‘al- kis·sê ḇêṯ- yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 17

nor will the priests who are Levites ever… fail to have a man before Me to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings, and to present sacrifices.”

“This is what the LORD says: If you can break My covenant with the day and My covenant with the night, so that day and night cease to occupy their appointed time,

then My covenant may also be broken with David My servant and with My ministers the Levites who are priests, so that [David] will not have a son to reign on his throne.

As the hosts of heaven cannot be counted [and as] the sand on the seashore cannot be measured, so too will I multiply the descendants of My servant David and the Levites who minister before Me.”

“Have you not noticed what these people are saying…: ‘The LORD has rejected the two families He had chosen’? So they despise My people and no longer regard them as a nation -.

This is what the LORD says: If I have not established My covenant with the day and the night and the fixed order of heaven and earth,

𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤉𐤅𐤌𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄 𐤇𐤒𐤅𐤕 𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤑

כֹּ֚ה יְהוָ֔ה אָמַ֣ר אִם־ לֹ֥א לֹא־ שָֽׂמְתִּי׃ בְרִיתִ֖י יוֹמָ֣ם וָלָ֑יְלָה חֻקּ֛וֹת שָׁמַ֥יִם וָאָ֖רֶץ kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar ’im- lō lō- śā·mə·tî ḇə·rî·ṯî yō·w·mām wā·lā·yə·lāh ḥuq·qō·wṯ šā·ma·yim wā·’ā·reṣWLC · 25

then I would also reject the descendants of Jacob and of My servant David, so as not to take from his descendants rulers over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. For I will restore them from captivity and will have compassion on them.”
