Chapter 31

Mourning Turned to Joy

1

“At that time,” declares the LORD, “I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they will be My people.”

𐤄𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤏𐤌𐤎

הַהִיא֙ בָּעֵ֤ת נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֔ה אֶֽהְיֶה֙ לֵֽאלֹהִ֔ים לְכֹ֖ל מִשְׁפְּח֣וֹת יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְהֵ֖מָּה יִֽהְיוּ־ לִ֥י לְעָֽם׃ס ha·hî bā·‘êṯ nə·’um- Yah·weh ’eh·yeh lê·lō·hîm lə·ḵōl miš·pə·ḥō·wṯ yiś·rā·’êl wə·hêm·māh yih·yū- lî lə·‘āmWLC · 1

This is what the LORD says: “The people who survived the sword found favor in the wilderness when Israel went to find rest.”

𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤏𐤌 𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤇𐤍 𐤁𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤊 𐤋𐤄𐤓𐤂𐤉𐤏𐤅

כֹּ֚ה יְהוָ֔ה אָמַ֣ר עַ֖ם שְׂרִ֣ידֵי חָ֑רֶב מָצָ֥א חֵן֙ בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ הָל֥וֹךְ לְהַרְגִּיע֖וֹ kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar ‘am śə·rî·ḏê ḥā·reḇ mā·ṣā ḥên bam·miḏ·bār yiś·rā·’êl hā·lō·wḵ lə·har·gî·‘ōwWLC · 2

The LORD appeared to us in the past, [saying]: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore… I have drawn you with loving devotion.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤍𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤋𐤉 𐤌𐤓𐤇𐤅𐤒 𐤀𐤄𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤄𐤁𐤕 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤍 𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤇𐤎𐤃

יְהוָ֖ה נִרְאָ֣ה לִ֑י מֵרָח֕וֹק אֲהַבְתִּ֔יךְ עוֹלָם֙ וְאַהֲבַ֤ת עַל־ כֵּ֖ן מְשַׁכְתִּ֥יךְ חָֽסֶד׃ Yah·weh nir·’āh lî mê·rā·ḥō·wq ’ă·haḇ·tîḵ ‘ō·w·lām wə·’a·hă·ḇaṯ ‘al- kên mə·šaḵ·tîḵ ḥā·seḏWLC · 3

Again I will build you, and you will be rebuilt, O Virgin Israel. Again you will take up your tambourines and go out in joyful dancing.

𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤊 𐤅𐤍𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤕 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤋𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤕𐤏𐤃𐤉 𐤕𐤐𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤔𐤇𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤇𐤅𐤋

ע֤וֹד אֶבְנֵךְ֙ וְֽנִבְנֵ֔ית בְּתוּלַ֖ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל ע֚וֹד תַּעְדִּ֣י תֻפַּ֔יִךְ וְיָצָ֖את מְשַׂחֲקִֽים׃ בִּמְח֥וֹל ‘ō·wḏ ’eḇ·nêḵ wə·niḇ·nêṯ bə·ṯū·laṯ yiś·rā·’êl ‘ō·wḏ ta‘·dî ṯup·pa·yiḵ wə·yā·ṣāṯ mə·śa·ḥă·qîm bim·ḥō·wlWLC · 4

Again you will plant vineyards on the hills of Samaria; the farmers will plant and enjoy the fruit.

𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤕𐤈𐤏𐤉 𐤊𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤄𐤓𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤍𐤈𐤏𐤅 𐤍𐤈𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤇𐤋𐤋𐤅

ע֚וֹד תִּטְּעִ֣י כְרָמִ֔ים בְּהָרֵ֖י שֹֽׁמְר֑וֹן נָטְע֥וּ נֹטְעִ֖ים וְחִלֵּֽלוּ׃ ‘ō·wḏ tiṭ·ṭə·‘î ḵə·rā·mîm bə·hā·rê šō·mə·rō·wn nā·ṭə·‘ū nō·ṭə·‘îm wə·ḥil·lê·lūWLC · 5

For there will be a day when watchmen will call out on the hills of Ephraim, ‘Arise, let us go up to Zion, to the LORD our God!’”

𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤍𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤁𐤄𐤓 𐤀𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤒𐤅𐤌𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤑𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤍𐤅𐤐

כִּ֣י יֶשׁ־ י֔וֹם נֹצְרִ֖ים קָרְא֥וּ בְּהַ֣ר אֶפְרָ֑יִם ק֚וּמוּ וְנַעֲלֶ֣ה צִיּ֔וֹן אֶל־ יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃פ kî yeš- yō·wm nō·ṣə·rîm qā·rə·’ū bə·har ’ep̄·rā·yim qū·mū wə·na·‘ă·leh ṣî·yō·wn ’el- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nūWLC · 6

For this is what the LORD says: “Sing with joy for Jacob; shout for the foremost of the nations! Make your praises heard, and say, ‘O LORD, save Your people, the remnant of Israel!’

𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤓𐤍𐤅 𐤔𐤌𐤇𐤄 𐤋𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤅𐤑𐤄𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤓𐤀𐤔 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤏𐤅 𐤄𐤋𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤏𐤌𐤊 𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

כִּי־ כֹ֣ה׀ יְהוָ֗ה אָמַ֣ר רָנּ֤וּ שִׂמְחָ֔ה לְיַֽעֲקֹב֙ וְצַהֲל֖וּ בְּרֹ֣אשׁ הַגּוֹיִ֑ם הַשְׁמִ֤יעוּ הַֽלְלוּ֙ וְאִמְר֔וּ יְהוָה֙ אֶֽת־ הוֹשַׁ֤ע עַמְּךָ֔ אֵ֖ת שְׁאֵרִ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ kî- ḵōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar rān·nū śim·ḥāh lə·ya·‘ă·qōḇ wə·ṣa·hă·lū bə·rōš hag·gō·w·yim haš·mî·‘ū hal·lū wə·’im·rū Yah·weh ’eṯ- hō·wō·ša‘ ‘am·mə·ḵā ’êṯ šə·’ê·rîṯ yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 7

Behold, I will bring them from the land of the north and gather them from the farthest parts of the earth, including the blind and the lame, expectant mothers and women in labor. They will return… as a great assembly!

𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤑𐤐𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤒𐤁𐤑𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤉𐤓𐤊𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤁𐤌 𐤏𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤐𐤎𐤇 𐤉𐤇𐤃𐤅 𐤄𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤅 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤒𐤄𐤋

הִנְנִי֩ מֵבִ֨יא אוֹתָ֜ם מֵאֶ֣רֶץ צָפ֗וֹן וְקִבַּצְתִּים֮ מִיַּרְכְּתֵי־ אָרֶץ֒ בָּ֚ם עִוֵּ֣ר וּפִסֵּ֔חַ יַחְדָּ֑ו הָרָ֥ה וְיֹלֶ֖דֶת יָשׁ֥וּבוּ הֵֽנָּה׃ גָּד֖וֹל קָהָ֥ל hin·nî mê·ḇî ’ō·w·ṯām mê·’e·reṣ ṣā·p̄ō·wn wə·qib·baṣ·tîm mî·yar·kə·ṯê- ’ā·reṣ bām ‘iw·wêr ū·p̄is·sê·aḥ yaḥ·dāw hā·rāh wə·yō·le·ḏeṯ yā·šū·ḇū hên·nāh gā·ḏō·wl qā·hālWLC · 8

They will come with weeping, and by their supplication I will lead them; I will make them walk beside streams of waters, on a level path where they will not stumble For I am Israel’s Father, and Ephraim is My firstborn…”

יָבֹ֗אוּ בִּבְכִ֣י וּֽבְתַחֲנוּנִים֮ אֽוֹבִילֵם֒ אֽוֹלִיכֵם֙ אֶל־ נַ֣חֲלֵי מַ֔יִם יָשָׁ֔ר בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ לֹ֥א יִכָּשְׁל֖וּ בָּ֑הּ כִּֽי־ הָיִ֤יתִי לְיִשְׂרָאֵל֙ לְאָ֔ב וְאֶפְרַ֖יִם בְּכֹ֥רִי הֽוּא׃ס yā·ḇō·’ū biḇ·ḵî ū·ḇə·ṯa·ḥă·nū·nîm ’ō·w·ḇî·lêm ’ō·w·lî·ḵêm ’el- na·ḥă·lê ma·yim yā·šār bə·ḏe·reḵ lō yik·kā·šə·lū bāh kî- hā·yî·ṯî lə·yiś·rā·’êl lə·’āḇ wə·’ep̄·ra·yim bə·ḵō·rî hūWLC · 9

Hear, O nations, the word of the LORD, and proclaim it in distant coastlands -: “The One who scattered Israel will gather them and keep them as a shepherd [keeps] his flock.

𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤂𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤌𐤌𐤓𐤇𐤒 𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤌𐤆𐤓𐤄 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤒𐤁𐤑𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤊𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤏𐤃𐤓𐤅

שִׁמְע֤וּ גּוֹיִ֔ם דְבַר־ יְהוָה֙ וְהַגִּ֥ידוּ מִמֶּרְחָ֑ק בָאִיִּ֖ים וְאִמְר֗וּ מְזָרֵ֤ה יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ יְקַבְּצֶ֔נּוּ וּשְׁמָר֖וֹ כְּרֹעֶ֥ה עֶדְרֽוֹ׃ šim·‘ū gō·w·yim ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh wə·hag·gî·ḏū mim·mer·ḥāq ḇā·’î·yîm wə·’im·rū mə·zā·rêh yiś·rā·’êl yə·qab·bə·ṣen·nū ū·šə·mā·rōw kə·rō·‘eh ‘eḏ·rōwWLC · 10

For the LORD has ransomed Jacob and redeemed him from the hand that had overpowered him.

𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤃𐤄 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤅𐤂𐤀𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤇𐤆𐤒

כִּֽי־ יְהוָ֖ה אֶֽת־ פָדָ֥ה יַעֲקֹ֑ב וּגְאָל֕וֹ מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ מִיַּ֖ד חָזָ֥ק kî- Yah·weh ’eṯ- p̄ā·ḏāh ya·‘ă·qōḇ ū·ḡə·’ā·lōw mim·men·nū mî·yaḏ ḥā·zāqWLC · 11

They will come and shout for joy on the heights of Zion; they will be radiant over the bounty of the LORD— the grain, new wine, and oil,… and the young of the flocks and herds. Their life will be like a well-watered garden, and never again will they languish.

𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤅𐤓𐤍𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤌 𐤑𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤍𐤄𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤃𐤂𐤍 𐤕𐤉𐤓𐤔 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤑𐤄𐤓 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤑𐤀𐤍 𐤅𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤓𐤅𐤄 𐤊𐤂𐤍 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤉𐤐𐤅 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤋𐤃𐤀𐤁𐤄

וּבָאוּ֮ וְרִנְּנ֣וּ בִמְרוֹם־ צִיּוֹן֒ וְנָהֲר֞וּ אֶל־ ט֣וּב יְהוָ֗ה עַל־ דָּגָן֙ תִּירֹ֣שׁ וְעַל־ יִצְהָ֔ר וְעַל־ וְעַל־ בְּנֵי־ צֹ֖אן וּבָקָ֑ר נַפְשָׁם֙ וְהָיְתָ֤ה רָוֶ֔ה כְּגַ֣ן וְלֹא־ יוֹסִ֥יפוּ עֽוֹד׃ לְדַאֲבָ֖ה ū·ḇā·’ū wə·rin·nə·nū ḇim·rō·wm- ṣî·yō·wn wə·nā·hă·rū ’el- ṭūḇ Yah·weh ‘al- dā·ḡān tî·rōš wə·‘al- yiṣ·hār wə·‘al- wə·‘al- bə·nê- ṣōn ū·ḇā·qār nap̄·šām wə·hā·yə·ṯāh rā·weh kə·ḡan wə·lō- yō·w·sî·p̄ū ‘ō·wḏ lə·ḏa·’ă·ḇāhWLC · 12

Then the maidens will rejoice with dancing, young men and old as well. I will turn their mourning into joy, and give them comfort and joy for their sorrow.

אָ֣ז בְּתוּלָה֙ תִּשְׂמַ֤ח בְּמָח֔וֹל וּבַחֻרִ֥ים וּזְקֵנִ֖ים יַחְדָּ֑ו וְהָפַכְתִּ֨י אֶבְלָ֤ם לְשָׂשׂוֹן֙ וְנִ֣חַמְתִּ֔ים וְשִׂמַּחְתִּ֖ים מִיגוֹנָֽם׃ ’āz bə·ṯū·lāh tiś·maḥ bə·mā·ḥō·wl ū·ḇa·ḥu·rîm ū·zə·qê·nîm yaḥ·dāw wə·hā·p̄aḵ·tî ’eḇ·lām lə·śā·śō·wn wə·ni·ḥam·tîm wə·śim·maḥ·tîm mî·ḡō·w·nāmWLC · 13

I will fill the souls of the priests abundantly, and will fill My people with My goodness,” declares the LORD.

𐤅𐤓𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤍𐤐𐤔 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤃𐤔𐤍 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤈𐤅𐤁𐤉 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄𐤎

וְרִוֵּיתִ֛י נֶ֥פֶשׁ הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים דָּ֑שֶׁן יִשְׂבָּ֖עוּ וְעַמִּ֛י אֶת־ טוּבִ֥י נְאֻם־ יְהוָֽה׃ס wə·riw·wê·ṯî ne·p̄eš hak·kō·hă·nîm dā·šen yiś·bā·‘ū wə·‘am·mî ’eṯ- ṭū·ḇî nə·’um- Yah·wehWLC · 14

This is what the LORD says: “A voice is heard in Ramah, mourning and great weeping, Rachel weeping for her children [and] refusing to be comforted -, because they are no more.”

𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤍𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤁𐤓𐤌𐤄 𐤍𐤄𐤉 𐤕𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤊𐤉 𐤓𐤇𐤋 𐤌𐤁𐤊𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤀𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤄𐤍𐤇𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤍𐤍𐤅𐤎

כֹּ֣ה׀ יְהוָ֗ה אָמַ֣ר ק֣וֹל נִשְׁמָע֙ בְּרָמָ֤ה נְהִי֙ תַמְרוּרִ֔ים בְּכִ֣י רָחֵ֖ל מְבַכָּ֣ה עַל־ בָּנֶ֑יהָ מֵאֲנָ֛ה לְהִנָּחֵ֥ם עַל־ בָּנֶ֖יהָ כִּ֥י אֵינֶֽנּוּ׃ס kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar qō·wl niš·mā‘ bə·rā·māh nə·hî ṯam·rū·rîm bə·ḵî rā·ḥêl mə·ḇak·kāh ‘al- bā·ne·hā mê·’ă·nāh lə·hin·nā·ḥêm ‘al- bā·ne·hā kî ’ê·nen·nūWLC · 15

This is what the LORD says: “Keep your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears, for the reward for your work will come, declares the LORD. Then [your children] will return from the land of the enemy.

𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤍𐤏𐤉 𐤒𐤅𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤁𐤊𐤉 𐤅𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤃𐤌𐤏𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤔𐤊𐤓 𐤋𐤐𐤏𐤋𐤕𐤊 𐤉𐤔 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤅𐤉𐤁

כֹּ֣ה׀ יְהוָ֗ה אָמַ֣ר מִנְעִ֤י קוֹלֵךְ֙ מִבֶּ֔כִי וְעֵינַ֖יִךְ מִדִּמְעָ֑ה כִּי֩ שָׂכָ֤ר לִפְעֻלָּתֵךְ֙ יֵ֨שׁ נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֔ה וְשָׁ֖בוּ מֵאֶ֥רֶץ אוֹיֵֽב׃ kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar min·‘î qō·w·lêḵ mib·be·ḵî wə·‘ê·na·yiḵ mid·dim·‘āh kî śā·ḵār lip̄·‘ul·lā·ṯêḵ yêš nə·’um- Yah·weh wə·šā·ḇū mê·’e·reṣ ’ō·w·yêḇWLC · 16

So there is hope for your future, declares the LORD, and your children will return to their own land.

וְיֵשׁ־ תִּקְוָ֥ה לְאַחֲרִיתֵ֖ךְ נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֑ה בָנִ֖ים וְשָׁ֥בוּ לִגְבוּלָֽם׃ס wə·yêš- tiq·wāh lə·’a·ḥă·rî·ṯêḵ nə·’um- Yah·weh ḇā·nîm wə·šā·ḇū liḡ·ḇū·lāmWLC · 17

I have surely heard… Ephraim’s moaning: ‘You disciplined me severely…, like an untrained… calf. Restore me, that I may return, for You [are] the LORD my God.

After I returned, I repented; and after I was instructed, I struck [my thigh]… in grief. I was ashamed and humiliated because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’

Is not Ephraim… a precious son to Me, a delightful… child? Though I often speak against him, I still remember him… Therefore… My heart yearns for him; I have great compassion for him…,” declares the LORD.

“Set up the road markers, put up the signposts. Keep the highway in mind…, the road you have traveled. Return, O Virgin Israel, return to these cities of yours.

How long… will you wander, O faithless daughter? For the LORD has created a new thing in the land— a woman will shelter a man.”

This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: “When I restore them from captivity, they will once again speak this word in the land of Judah and in its cities: ‘May the LORD bless you, O righteous dwelling place, O holy mountain.’

And Judah and all its cities will dwell together in [the land], the farmers and those who move with the flocks,

At this I awoke and looked around. My sleep had been most pleasant to me.

“- The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man [and] of beast.

  • Just as I watched over them to uproot and tear down, to demolish, destroy, and bring disaster, so I will watch over them to build and to plant,” declares the LORD.

“In those days, it will no longer be said: ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the teeth of the children are set on edge.’

Instead…, each will die for his own iniquity. If anyone… eats the sour grapes, his own teeth will be set on edge.

Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.

It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt— a covenant they broke -, though I was a husband to them, declares the LORD.

“But this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD. I will put My law in their minds and inscribe it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they will be My people.

No longer will each man teach his neighbor [or] his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ because they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquities and will remember their sins no more.”

Thus says the LORD, who gives the sun for light by day, [who] sets in order the moon and stars for light by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar— the LORD of Hosts is His name:

“Only if this fixed order departed from My presence, declares the LORD, would Israel’s descendants ever… cease to be a nation before Me.”

אִם־ הָאֵ֛לֶּה הַחֻקִּ֥ים יָמֻ֜שׁוּ מִלְּפָנַ֖י נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֑ה יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל זֶ֨רַע גַּם֩ כָּל־ הַיָּמִֽים׃ס יִשְׁבְּת֗וּ מִֽהְי֥וֹת גּ֛וֹי לְפָנַ֖י ’im- hā·’êl·leh ha·ḥuq·qîm yā·mu·šū mil·lə·p̄ā·nay nə·’um- Yah·weh yiś·rā·’êl ze·ra‘ gam kāl- hay·yā·mîm yiš·bə·ṯū mih·yō·wṯ gō·w lə·p̄ā·nayWLC · 36

This is what the LORD says: “Only if the heavens above could be measured and the foundations of the earth below… searched out would I reject all of Israel’s descendants because of all they have done,” declares the LORD.

כֹּ֣ה׀ יְהוָ֗ה אָמַ֣ר אִם־ שָׁמַ֙יִם֙ מִלְמַ֔עְלָה יִמַּ֤דּוּ מֽוֹסְדֵי־ אֶ֖רֶץ לְמָ֑טָּה גַּם־ וְיֵחָקְר֥וּ אֲנִ֞י אֶמְאַ֨ס בְּכָל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל זֶ֧רַע עַֽל־ כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשׂ֖וּ נְאֻם־ יְהוָֽה׃ס kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar ’im- šā·ma·yim mil·ma‘·lāh yim·mad·dū mō·ws·ḏê- ’e·reṣ lə·māṭ·ṭāh gam- wə·yê·ḥā·qə·rū ’ă·nî ’em·’as bə·ḵāl yiś·rā·’êl ze·ra‘ ‘al- kāl- ’ă·šer ‘ā·śū nə·’um- Yah·wehWLC · 37

“The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when this city will be rebuilt for [Me], from the tower of Hananel to the Corner Gate.

The measuring line will once again stretch out straight to the hill of Gareb and then turn toward Goah.

הַמִּדָּה֙ קְוֵה ע֜וֹד וְיָצָ֨א נֶגְדּ֔וֹ עַ֖ל גִּבְעַ֣ת גָּרֵ֑ב וְנָסַ֖ב גֹּעָֽתָה׃ ham·mid·dāh qə·wēh ‘ō·wḏ wə·yā·ṣā neḡ·dōw ‘al giḇ·‘aṯ gā·rêḇ wə·nā·saḇ gō·‘ā·ṯāhWLC · 39

The whole valley of the dead bodies and ashes, and all the fields as far as the Kidron Valley, to the corner of the Horse Gate to the east, will be holy to the LORD. It will never… again be uprooted… or demolished.”
