Hananiah’s False Prophecy
1
In the fifth month of that same year, the fourth year, near the beginning of the reign of King Zedekiah of Judah, the prophet Hananiah son of Azzur, who was from Gibeon, said to me in the house of the LORD in the presence of the priests and all the people -:
𐤄𐤇𐤌𐤉𐤔𐤉 𐤁𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤄𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤕 𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤕 𐤁𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤌𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤕 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤉𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤇𐤍𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤏𐤆𐤅𐤓 𐤌𐤂𐤁𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤁𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
הַחֲמִישִׁ֑י בַּחֹ֖דֶשׁ וַיְהִ֣י׀ הַהִ֗יא בַּשָּׁנָ֣ה הָֽרְבִעִ֔ית בִּשְׁנַת בְּרֵאשִׁית֙ מַמְלֶ֙כֶת֙ מֶֽלֶךְ־ צִדְקִיָּ֣ה יְהוּדָ֔ה הַנָּבִ֜יא אֲשֶׁ֤ר חֲנַנְיָה֩ בֶן־ עַזּ֨וּר מִגִּבְעוֹן֙ אָמַ֣ר אֵלַ֡י בְּבֵ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה לְעֵינֵ֧י הַכֹּהֲנִ֛ים וְכָל־ הָעָ֖ם לֵאמֹֽר׃ ha·ḥă·mî·šî ba·ḥō·ḏeš way·hî ha·hî baš·šā·nāh hā·rə·ḇi·‘îṯ biš·naṯ bə·rê·šîṯ mam·le·ḵeṯ me·leḵ- ṣiḏ·qî·yāh yə·hū·ḏāh han·nā·ḇî ’ă·šer ḥă·nan·yāh ḇen- ‘az·zūr mig·giḇ·‘ō·wn ’ā·mar ’ê·lay bə·ḇêṯ Yah·weh lə·‘ê·nê hak·kō·hă·nîm wə·ḵāl hā·‘ām lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel,… says: ‘I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.
𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤔𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤁𐤋
כֹּֽה־ יְהוָ֧ה צְבָא֛וֹת אֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֵאמֹ֑ר אָמַ֞ר שָׁבַ֞רְתִּי אֶת־ עֹ֖ל מֶ֥לֶךְ בָּבֶֽל׃ kōh- Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl lê·mōr ’ā·mar šā·ḇar·tî ’eṯ- ‘ōl me·leḵ bā·ḇel — WLC · 2

- Within two years… I will restore to this place all the articles of the house of the LORD that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon removed from… here and carried to Babylon.
𐤁𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤔𐤍𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤁 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤊𐤋𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤁𐤅𐤊𐤃𐤍𐤀𐤑𐤓 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤁𐤋 𐤋𐤒𐤇 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤌 𐤁𐤁𐤋
בְּע֣וֹד׀ שְׁנָתַ֣יִם יָמִ֗ים אֲנִ֤י מֵשִׁיב֙ אֶל־ הַזֶּ֔ה אֶֽת־ הַמָּק֣וֹם כָּל־ כְּלֵ֖י בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר נְבוּכַדנֶאצַּ֤ר מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶל֙ לָקַ֜ח מִן־ הַמָּק֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה וַיְבִיאֵ֖ם בָּבֶֽל׃ bə·‘ō·wḏ šə·nā·ṯa·yim yā·mîm ’ă·nî mê·šîḇ ’el- haz·zeh ’eṯ- ham·mā·qō·wm kāl- kə·lê bêṯ Yah·weh ’ă·šer nə·ḇū·ḵa·ḏ·nɛṣ·ṣar me·leḵ- bā·ḇel lā·qaḥ min- ham·mā·qō·wm haz·zeh way·ḇî·’êm bā·ḇel — WLC · 3

And I will restore to this place Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, along with all the exiles from Judah who went to Babylon,’ declares the LORD, ‘for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.’”

וְאֶת־ אֲנִ֥י מֵשִׁ֛יב אֶל־ הַזֶּ֖ה הַמָּק֥וֹם יְכָנְיָ֣ה בֶן־ יְהוֹיָקִ֣ים מֶֽלֶךְ־ יְ֠הוּדָה וְאֶת־ כָּל־ גָּל֨וּת יְהוּדָ֜ה הַבָּאִ֣ים בָּבֶ֗לָה נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֑ה כִּ֣י אֶשְׁבֹּ֔ר אֶת־ עֹ֖ל מֶ֥לֶךְ בָּבֶֽל׃ wə·’eṯ- ’ă·nî mê·šîḇ ’el- haz·zeh ham·mā·qō·wm yə·ḵā·nə·yāh ḇen- yə·hō·w·yā·qîm me·leḵ- yə·hū·ḏāh wə·’eṯ- kāl- gā·lūṯ yə·hū·ḏāh hab·bā·’îm bā·ḇe·lāh nə·’um- Yah·weh kî ’eš·bōr ’eṯ- ‘ōl me·leḵ bā·ḇel — WLC · 4

Then the prophet Jeremiah replied to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests… and all the people who were standing in the house of the LORD.
𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤇𐤍𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤄𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
הַנָּבִ֔יא יִרְמְיָ֣ה וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אֶל־ הַנָּבִ֑יא חֲנַנְיָ֖ה לְעֵינֵ֤י הַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ וּלְעֵינֵ֣י כָל־ הָעָ֔ם הָעֹמְדִ֖ים בְּבֵ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃ han·nā·ḇî yir·mə·yāh way·yō·mer ’el- han·nā·ḇî ḥă·nan·yāh lə·‘ê·nê hak·kō·hă·nîm ū·lə·‘ê·nê ḵāl hā·‘ām hā·‘ō·mə·ḏîm bə·ḇêṯ Yah·weh — WLC · 5

“Amen!” Jeremiah said. “May the LORD do so! May the LORD fulfill the words you have prophesied, and may He restore the articles of [His] house and all the exiles back to this place from Babylon.

אָמֵ֕ן הַנָּבִ֔יא יִרְמְיָ֣ה וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ יְהוָ֑ה יַעֲשֶׂ֣ה כֵּ֖ן יְהוָה֙ אֶת־ יָקֵ֤ם דְּבָרֶ֔יךָ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נִבֵּ֗אתָ לְהָשִׁ֞יב כְּלֵ֤י יְהוָה֙ בֵית־ וְכָל־ הַגּוֹלָ֔ה אֶל־ הַזֶּֽה׃ הַמָּק֥וֹם מִבָּבֶ֖ל ’ā·mên han·nā·ḇî yir·mə·yāh way·yō·mer Yah·weh ya·‘ă·śeh kên Yah·weh ’eṯ- yā·qêm də·ḇā·re·ḵā ’ă·šer nib·bê·ṯā lə·hā·šîḇ kə·lê Yah·weh ḇêṯ- wə·ḵāl hag·gō·w·lāh ’el- haz·zeh ham·mā·qō·wm mib·bā·ḇel — WLC · 6

Nevertheless, listen now to this message I am speaking in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people.
𐤀𐤊 𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤍𐤀 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌
אַךְ־ שְׁמַֽע־ נָא֙ הַזֶּ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר הַדָּבָ֣ר אָנֹכִ֖י דֹּבֵ֣ר בְּאָזְנֶ֑יךָ וּבְאָזְנֵ֖י כָּל־ הָעָֽם׃ ’aḵ- šə·ma‘- nā haz·zeh ’ă·šer had·dā·ḇār ’ā·nō·ḵî dō·ḇêr bə·’ā·zə·ne·ḵā ū·ḇə·’ā·zə·nê kāl- hā·‘ām — WLC · 7

The prophets of old who preceded… you and me prophesied war, disaster, and plague against many… lands and great kingdoms.
𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤍 𐤅𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤓𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅𐤕
הַנְּבִיאִ֗ים הָֽעוֹלָ֑ם אֲשֶׁ֨ר הָי֧וּ לְפָנַ֛י מִן־ וּלְפָנֶ֖יךָ וַיִּנָּ֨בְא֜וּ לְמִלְחָמָ֖ה וּלְרָעָ֥ה וּלְדָֽבֶר׃ אֶל־ רַבּוֹת֙ וְעַל־ אֲרָצ֤וֹת גְּדֹל֔וֹת מַמְלָכ֣וֹת han·nə·ḇî·’îm hā·‘ō·w·lām ’ă·šer hā·yū lə·p̄ā·nay min- ū·lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā way·yin·nā·ḇə·’ū lə·mil·ḥā·māh ū·lə·rā·‘āh ū·lə·ḏā·ḇer ’el- rab·bō·wṯ wə·‘al- ’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ gə·ḏō·lō·wṯ mam·lā·ḵō·wṯ — WLC · 8

As for the prophet who prophesies peace, only if the word of the prophet comes true will the prophet be recognized as one the LORD has truly sent.”
𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤍𐤁𐤀 𐤋𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤁𐤁𐤀 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤅𐤃𐤏 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤌𐤕 𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤅
הַנָּבִ֕יא אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִנָּבֵ֖א לְשָׁל֑וֹם דְּבַ֣ר הַנָּבִ֗יא בְּבֹא֙ הַנָּבִ֔יא אֲשֶׁר־ יִוָּדַע֙ יְהוָ֖ה בֶּאֱמֶֽת׃ שְׁלָח֥וֹ han·nā·ḇî ’ă·šer yin·nā·ḇê lə·šā·lō·wm də·ḇar han·nā·ḇî bə·ḇō han·nā·ḇî ’ă·šer- yiw·wā·ḏa‘ Yah·weh be·’ĕ·meṯ šə·lā·ḥōw — WLC · 9

Then the prophet Hananiah took the yoke off the neck of Jeremiah the prophet and broke it.
𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤇𐤍𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤄𐤌𐤅𐤈𐤄 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤑𐤅𐤀𐤓 𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤅
הַנָּבִיא֙ אֶת־ חֲנַנְיָ֤ה וַיִּקַּ֞ח הַמּוֹטָ֔ה מֵעַ֕ל צַוַּ֖אר יִרְמְיָ֣ה הַנָּבִ֑יא וַֽיִּשְׁבְּרֵֽהוּ׃ han·nā·ḇî ’eṯ- ḥă·nan·yāh way·yiq·qaḥ ham·mō·w·ṭāh mê·‘al ṣaw·war yir·mə·yāh han·nā·ḇî way·yiš·bə·rê·hū — WLC · 10

And in the presence of all the people Hananiah proclaimed, “This is what the LORD says: ‘In this way, within two years… I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon off the neck of all the nations.’” At this, Jeremiah the prophet went on his way.

לְעֵינֵ֨י כָל־ הָעָ֜ם חֲנַנְיָה֩ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר כֹּה֮ אָמַ֣ר יְהוָה֒ לֵאמֹ֗ר כָּ֣כָה שְׁנָתַ֣יִם יָמִ֔ים אֶשְׁבֹּ֞ר אֶת־ עֹ֣ל׀ נְבֻֽכַדְנֶאצַּ֣ר מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶ֗ל בְּעוֹד֙ מֵעַ֕ל צַוַּ֖אר כָּל־ הַגּוֹיִ֑ם יִרְמְיָ֥ה הַנָּבִ֖יא וַיֵּ֛לֶךְ לְדַרְכּֽוֹ׃פ lə·‘ê·nê ḵāl hā·‘ām ḥă·nan·yāh way·yō·mer kōh ’ā·mar Yah·weh lê·mōr kā·ḵāh šə·nā·ṯa·yim yā·mîm ’eš·bōr ’eṯ- ‘ōl nə·ḇu·ḵaḏ·neṣ·ṣar me·leḵ- bā·ḇel bə·‘ō·wḏ mê·‘al- ṣaw·war kāl- hag·gō·w·yim yir·mə·yāh han·nā·ḇî way·yê·leḵ lə·ḏar·kōw — WLC · 11

But shortly after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke off [his] neck…, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:
𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤇𐤍𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤁𐤅𐤓 𐤄𐤌𐤅𐤈𐤄 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤑𐤅𐤀𐤓 𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤄
אַ֠חֲרֵי חֲנַנְיָ֤ה הַנָּבִיא֙ אֶת־ שְׁב֞וֹר הַמּוֹטָ֔ה מֵעַ֗ל צַוַּ֛אר יִרְמְיָ֥ה הַנָּבִ֖יא לֵאמֹֽר׃ דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֶֽל־ יִרְמְיָ֑ה ’a·ḥă·rê ḥă·nan·yāh han·nā·ḇî ’eṯ- šə·ḇō·wr ham·mō·w·ṭāh mê·‘al ṣaw·war yir·mə·yāh han·nā·ḇî lê·mōr ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’el- yir·mə·yāh — WLC · 12

“Go and tell… Hananiah that this is what… the LORD says: ‘You have broken a yoke of wood, but in its place you have fashioned a yoke of iron.’
𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤇𐤍𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤔𐤁𐤓𐤕 𐤌𐤅𐤈𐤕 𐤏𐤑 𐤕𐤇𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤌𐤈𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤓𐤆𐤋
הָלוֹךְ֩ וְאָמַרְתָּ֨ אֶל־ חֲנַנְיָ֜ה כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה לֵאמֹ֗ר שָׁבָ֑רְתָּ מוֹטֹ֥ת עֵ֖ץ תַחְתֵּיהֶ֖ן וְעָשִׂ֥יתָ מֹט֥וֹת בַּרְזֶֽל׃ hā·lō·wḵ wə·’ā·mar·tā ’el- ḥă·nan·yāh kōh ’ā·mar Yah·weh lê·mōr šā·ḇā·rə·tā mō·w·ṭōṯ ‘êṣ ṯaḥ·tê·hen wə·‘ā·śî·ṯā mō·ṭō·wṯ bar·zel — WLC · 13

For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘I have put a yoke of iron on the neck of all these nations to make them serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and they will serve him. I have even given him control of the beasts of the field.’”

Then the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah, “Listen,… Hananiah! The LORD did not send you, but you have persuaded this people to trust in a lie.

Therefore this is what the LORD… says: ‘I am about to remove you from the face of the earth. You will die this year because you have preached rebellion against the LORD.’”

And in the seventh month of that very year, the prophet Hananiah died.
