The Yoke of Nebuchadnezzar

At the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah son of Josiah king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah… from the LORD…
𐤁𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤌𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤀𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
בְּרֵאשִׁ֗ית מַמְלֶ֛כֶת יְהוֹיָקִ֥ם בֶּן־ יֹאושִׁיָּ֖הוּ מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֑ה הַזֶּה֙ הַדָּבָ֤ר הָיָ֞ה אֶֽל־ יִרְמְיָ֔ה מֵאֵ֥ת יְהוָ֖ה לֵאמֹֽר׃ bə·rê·šîṯ mam·le·ḵeṯ yə·hō·w·yā·qim ben- yō·wō·šî·yā·hū me·leḵ yə·hū·ḏāh haz·zeh had·dā·ḇār hā·yāh ’el- yir·mə·yāh mê·’êṯ Yah·weh lê·mōr — WLC · 1

This is what the LORD said to me: “Make for yourself a yoke out of leather straps and put it on your neck.
𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤌𐤈𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤅𐤎𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤑𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤊
כֹּֽה־ יְהוָה֙ אָמַ֤ר אֵלַ֔י עֲשֵׂ֣ה לְךָ֔ וּמֹט֑וֹת מוֹסֵר֖וֹת וּנְתַתָּ֖ם עַל־ צַוָּארֶֽךָ׃ kōh- Yah·weh ’ā·mar ’ê·lay ‘ă·śêh lə·ḵā ū·mō·ṭō·wṯ mō·w·sê·rō·wṯ ū·nə·ṯat·tām ‘al- ṣaw·wā·re·ḵā — WLC · 2

Send word to the kings of Edom, Moab,… Ammon…,… Tyre,… and Sidon through the envoys who have come to Jerusalem to Zedekiah king of Judah.
𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤃𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤅𐤀𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤌𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤑𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤑𐤉𐤃𐤅𐤍 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄
וְשִׁלַּחְתָּם֩ אֶל־ מֶ֨לֶךְ אֱד֜וֹם וְאֶל־ מֶ֣לֶךְ מוֹאָ֗ב וְאֶל־ מֶ֙לֶךְ֙ בְּנֵ֣י עַמּ֔וֹן וְאֶל־ מֶ֥לֶךְ צֹ֖ר וְאֶל־ מֶ֣לֶךְ צִיד֑וֹן בְּיַ֤ד מַלְאָכִים֙ הַבָּאִ֣ים יְרוּשָׁלִַ֔ם אֶל־ צִדְקִיָּ֖הוּ מֶ֥לֶךְ יְהוּדָֽה׃ wə·šil·laḥ·tām ’el- me·leḵ ’ĕ·ḏō·wm wə·’el- me·leḵ mō·w·’āḇ wə·’el- me·leḵ bə·nê ‘am·mō·wn wə·’el- me·leḵ ṣōr wə·’el- me·leḵ ṣî·ḏō·wn bə·yaḏ mal·’ā·ḵîm hab·bā·’îm yə·rū·šā·lim ’el- ṣiḏ·qî·yā·hū me·leḵ yə·hū·ḏāh — WLC · 3

Give them a message from the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, to relay to their masters - - -:
𐤅𐤑𐤅𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤄 𐤊𐤄 𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉𐤊𐤌
וְצִוִּיתָ֣ אֹתָ֔ם יְהוָ֤ה צְבָאוֹת֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אָמַ֞ר אֶל־ אֲדֹֽנֵיהֶ֖ם לֵאמֹ֑ר כֹּֽה־ כֹּ֥ה תֹֽאמְר֖וּ אֶל־ אֲדֹֽנֵיכֶֽם׃ wə·ṣiw·wî·ṯā ’ō·ṯām Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl ’ā·mar ’el- ’ă·ḏō·nê·hem lê·mōr kōh- kōh ṯō·mə·rū ’el- ’ă·ḏō·nê·ḵem — WLC · 4

By My great power and outstretched arm, I made the earth and the men and beasts on the face of [it], and I give it to whom I please…

הַגָּד֔וֹל בְּכֹחִי֙ הַנְּטוּיָ֑ה וּבִזְרוֹעִ֖י אָנֹכִ֞י עָשִׂ֣יתִי אֶת־ הָאָ֗רֶץ אֶת־ הָאָדָ֤ם וְאֶת־ הַבְּהֵמָה֙ אֲשֶׁר֙ עַל־ פְּנֵ֣י הָאָ֔רֶץ וּנְתַתִּ֕יהָ לַאֲשֶׁ֖ר יָשַׁ֥ר בְּעֵינָֽי׃ hag·gā·ḏō·wl bə·ḵō·ḥî han·nə·ṭū·yāh ū·ḇiz·rō·w·‘î ’ā·nō·ḵî ‘ā·śî·ṯî ’eṯ- hā·’ā·reṣ ’eṯ- hā·’ā·ḏām wə·’eṯ- hab·bə·hê·māh ’ă·šer ‘al- pə·nê hā·’ā·reṣ ū·nə·ṯat·tî·hā la·’ă·šer yā·šar bə·‘ê·nāy — WLC · 5

So now I have placed all these lands under the authority of My servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. I have even made the beasts of the field subject to him.

וְעַתָּ֗ה אָֽנֹכִי֙ נָתַ֙תִּי֙ אֶת־ כָּל־ הָאֵ֔לֶּה הָאֲרָצ֣וֹת בְּיַ֛ד עַבְדִּ֑י נְבוּכַדְנֶאצַּ֥ר מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶ֖ל וְגַם֙ אֶת־ נָתַ֥תִּי חַיַּ֣ת הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה לְעָבְדֽוֹ׃ ל֖וֹ wə·‘at·tāh ’ā·nō·ḵî nā·ṯat·tî ’eṯ- kāl- hā·’êl·leh hā·’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ bə·yaḏ ‘aḇ·dî nə·ḇū·ḵaḏ·neṣ·ṣar me·leḵ- bā·ḇel wə·ḡam ’eṯ- nā·ṯat·tî ḥay·yaṯ haś·śā·ḏeh lə·‘ā·ḇə·ḏōw lōw — WLC · 6

All nations will serve him and his son and grandson…, until the time of his own land… comes; then many nations and great kings will enslave him.
𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤅 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤍 𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤃 𐤏𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤅 𐤂𐤌 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤀 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤅 𐤁𐤅
כָּל־ הַגּוֹיִ֔ם וְאֶת־ וְעָבְד֤וּ אֹתוֹ֙ בְּנ֖וֹ וְאֶֽת־ בֶּן־ בְּנ֑וֹ עַ֣ד עֵ֤ת אַרְצוֹ֙ גַּם־ ה֔וּא בֹּא־ רַבִּ֔ים גּוֹיִ֣ם גְּדֹלִֽים׃ וּמְלָכִ֖ים וְעָ֤בְדוּ בוֹ֙ kāl- hag·gō·w·yim wə·’eṯ- wə·‘ā·ḇə·ḏū ’ō·ṯōw bə·nōw wə·’eṯ- ben- bə·nōw ‘aḏ ‘êṯ ’ar·ṣōw gam- hū bō- rab·bîm gō·w·yim gə·ḏō·lîm ū·mə·lā·ḵîm wə·‘ā·ḇə·ḏū ḇōw — WLC · 7

- As for the nation or kingdom that does not serve - Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon - and does not place its neck under [his] yoke…, I will punish… that nation by sword and famine and plague, declares the LORD, until I have destroyed it by his hand.

וְהָיָ֨ה הַגּ֜וֹי וְהַמַּמְלָכָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר לֹֽא־ יַעַבְד֤וּ אֹתוֹ֙ אֶת־ נְבוּכַדְנֶאצַּ֣ר מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶ֔ל וְאֵ֨ת אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־ יִתֵּן֙ אֶת־ צַוָּאר֔וֹ בְּעֹ֖ל מֶ֣לֶךְ בָּבֶ֑ל אֶפְקֹ֨ד עַל־ הַהוּא֙ הַגּ֤וֹי בַּחֶרֶב֩ וּבָרָעָ֨ב וּבַדֶּ֜בֶר נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֔ה עַד־ תֻּמִּ֥י אֹתָ֖ם בְּיָדֽוֹ׃ wə·hā·yāh hag·gō·w wə·ham·mam·lā·ḵāh ’ă·šer lō- ya·‘aḇ·ḏū ’ō·ṯōw ’eṯ- nə·ḇū·ḵaḏ·neṣ·ṣar me·leḵ- bā·ḇel wə·’êṯ ’ă·šer lō- yit·tên ’eṯ- ṣaw·wā·rōw bə·‘ōl me·leḵ bā·ḇel ’ep̄·qōḏ ‘al- ha·hū hag·gō·w ba·ḥe·reḇ ū·ḇā·rā·‘āḇ ū·ḇad·de·ḇer nə·’um- Yah·weh ‘aḏ- tum·mî ’ō·ṯām bə·yā·ḏōw — WLC · 8

But as for you, do not listen to your prophets, your diviners, your interpreters of dreams, your mediums, or your sorcerers who… declare…, ‘You will not serve the king of Babylon.’

וְ֠אַתֶּם אַל־ תִּשְׁמְע֨וּ אֶל־ נְבִיאֵיכֶ֜ם וְאֶל־ קֹֽסְמֵיכֶ֗ם וְאֶל֙ חֲלֹמֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם וְאֶל־ עֹֽנְנֵיכֶ֖ם וְאֶל־ כַּשָּׁפֵיכֶ֑ם אֲשֶׁר־ הֵ֞ם אֹמְרִ֤ים אֲלֵיכֶם֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר לֹ֥א תַעַבְד֖וּ אֶת־ מֶ֥לֶךְ בָּבֶֽל׃ wə·’at·tem ’al- tiš·mə·‘ū ’el- nə·ḇî·’ê·ḵem wə·’el- qō·sə·mê·ḵem wə·’el ḥă·lō·mō·ṯê·ḵem wə·’el- ‘ō·nə·nê·ḵem wə·’el- kaš·šā·p̄ê·ḵem ’ă·šer- hêm ’ō·mə·rîm ’ă·lê·ḵem lê·mōr lō ṯa·‘aḇ·ḏū ’eṯ- me·leḵ bā·ḇel — WLC · 9

For they prophesy to you a lie that will serve to remove you from your land; I will banish you and you will perish.
𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤌 𐤍𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤔𐤒𐤓 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤄𐤓𐤇𐤉𐤒 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤃𐤇𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤃𐤕𐤌
כִּ֣י הֵ֖ם נִבְּאִ֣ים לָכֶ֑ם שֶׁ֔קֶר לְמַ֨עַן הַרְחִ֤יק אֶתְכֶם֙ מֵעַ֣ל אַדְמַתְכֶ֔ם וְהִדַּחְתִּ֥י אֶתְכֶ֖ם וַאֲבַדְתֶּֽם׃ kî hêm nib·bə·’îm lā·ḵem še·qer lə·ma·‘an har·ḥîq ’eṯ·ḵem mê·‘al ’aḏ·maṯ·ḵem wə·hid·daḥ·tî ’eṯ·ḵem wa·’ă·ḇaḏ·tem — WLC · 10

But the nation that will put its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serve him, I will leave in its own land, to cultivate it and reside in it, declares the LORD.”
𐤅𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤑𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤅 𐤁𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤁𐤋 𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤇𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤁𐤄 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
וְהַגּ֗וֹי אֲשֶׁ֨ר יָבִ֧יא אֶת־ צַוָּאר֛וֹ בְּעֹ֥ל מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶ֖ל וַֽעֲבָד֑וֹ וְהִנַּחְתִּ֤יו עַל־ אַדְמָתוֹ֙ וַֽעֲבָדָ֖הּ וְיָ֥שַׁב בָּֽהּ׃ נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֔ה wə·hag·gō·w ’ă·šer yā·ḇî ’eṯ- ṣaw·wā·rōw bə·‘ōl me·leḵ- bā·ḇel wa·‘ă·ḇā·ḏōw wə·hin·naḥ·tîw ‘al- ’aḏ·mā·ṯōw wa·‘ă·ḇā·ḏāh wə·yā·šaḇ bāh nə·’um- Yah·weh — WLC · 11

And to Zedekiah king of Judah I spoke the same message…: “Put your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon; serve him and his people, and live!
𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤑𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤁𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤁𐤋 𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤅 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤅𐤇𐤉𐤅
וְאֶל־ צִדְקִיָּ֤ה מֶֽלֶךְ־ יְהוּדָה֙ דִּבַּ֔רְתִּי כְּכָל־ הַדְּבָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה לֵאמֹ֑ר הָבִ֨יאוּ אֶת־ צַוְּארֵיכֶ֜ם בְּעֹ֣ל מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶ֗ל וְעִבְד֥וּ אֹת֛וֹ וְעַמּ֖וֹ וִֽחְיֽוּ׃ wə·’el- ṣiḏ·qî·yāh me·leḵ- yə·hū·ḏāh dib·bar·tî kə·ḵāl- had·də·ḇā·rîm hā·’êl·leh lê·mōr hā·ḇî·’ū ’eṯ- ṣaw·wə·rê·ḵem bə·‘ōl me·leḵ- bā·ḇel wə·‘iḇ·ḏū ’ō·ṯōw wə·‘am·mōw wiḥ·yū — WLC · 12

Why should you and your people die by sword and famine and plague, as the LORD has decreed against any nation that does not serve the king of Babylon?
𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤊 𐤕𐤌𐤅𐤕𐤅 𐤁𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤁𐤓𐤏𐤁 𐤅𐤁𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤏𐤁𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤁𐤋
לָ֤מָּה אַתָּ֣ה וְעַמֶּ֔ךָ תָמ֙וּתוּ֙ בַּחֶ֖רֶב בָּרָעָ֣ב וּבַדָּ֑בֶר֙ כַּֽאֲשֶׁר֙ יְהוָ֔ה דִּבֶּ֣ר אֶל־ הַגּ֕וֹי אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־ יַעֲבֹ֖ד אֶת־ מֶ֥לֶךְ בָּבֶֽל׃ lām·māh ’at·tāh wə·‘am·me·ḵā ṯā·mū·ṯū ba·ḥe·reḇ bā·rā·‘āḇ ū·ḇad·dā·ḇer ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh dib·ber ’el- hag·gō·w ’ă·šer lō- ya·‘ă·ḇōḏ ’eṯ- me·leḵ bā·ḇel — WLC · 13

Do not listen to the words of the prophets who say…, ‘You must not serve the king of Babylon,’ for they are prophesying to you a lie.

For I have not sent them, declares the LORD, and yet they are prophesying falsely in My name; therefore I will banish you, and you will perish— you and the prophets who prophesy to you.”

Then I said to the priests and to all this people -, “This is what the LORD says: Do not listen to the words of your prophets who prophesy to you, saying, ‘Look, very soon… now the articles from the house of the LORD will be brought back from Babylon.’ They are prophesying to you a lie.

Do not listen to them. Serve the king of Babylon and live! Why should this city become a ruin?

If they are indeed prophets and the word of the LORD is with them, let them now plead with the LORD of Hosts that the articles remaining in the house of the LORD, in the palace of the king of Judah, and in Jerusalem, not be taken to Babylon.

For this is what the LORD of Hosts says about the pillars,… the sea,… the bases,… and the rest of the articles that remain in this city,

which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon did not take when he carried Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim king of Judah {into exile} from Jerusalem to Babylon, along with all the nobles of Judah and Jerusalem.

‘They will be carried to Babylon and will remain there until the day I attend to them again -,’ declares the LORD. ‘Then I will bring them back and restore them to this place.’”
