Chapter 26
A Warning to the Cities of Judah
1
At the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, this… word came from the LORD -:
𐤁𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤌𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤌𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
בְּרֵאשִׁ֗ית מַמְלְכ֛וּת יְהוֹיָקִ֥ים בֶּן־ יֹאשִׁיָּ֖הוּ מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֑ה הַזֶּ֔ה מֵאֵ֥ת הַדָּבָ֣ר הָיָה֙ יְהוָ֖ה לֵאמֹֽר׃ bə·rê·šîṯ mam·lə·ḵūṯ yə·hō·w·yā·qîm ben- yō·šî·yā·hū me·leḵ yə·hū·ḏāh haz·zeh mê·’êṯ had·dā·ḇār hā·yāh Yah·weh lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“This is what the LORD says: Stand in the courtyard of the house of the LORD and speak… all the words I have commanded you to speak to all the cities of Judah who come to worship there… Do not omit a word.
𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤁𐤇𐤑𐤓 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤕 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤑𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤋𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤓𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤄𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤔𐤕𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤂𐤓𐤏 𐤃𐤁𐤓
כֹּ֣ה׀ יְהוָ֗ה אָמַ֣ר עֲמֹד֮ בַּחֲצַ֣ר בֵּית־ יְהוָה֒ וְדִבַּרְתָּ֞ עַל־ כָּל־ הַדְּבָרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר צִוִּיתִ֖יךָ לְדַבֵּ֣ר אֲלֵיהֶ֑ם כָּל־ עָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֗ה הַבָּאִים֙ לְהִשְׁתַּחֲוֺ֣ת בֵּית־ יְהוָ֔ה אֵ֚ת אַל־ תִּגְרַ֖ע דָּבָֽר׃ kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar ‘ă·mōḏ ba·ḥă·ṣar bêṯ- Yah·weh wə·ḏib·bar·tā ‘al- kāl- had·də·ḇā·rîm ’ă·šer ṣiw·wî·ṯî·ḵā lə·ḏab·bêr ’ă·lê·hem kāl- ‘ā·rê yə·hū·ḏāh hab·bā·’îm lə·hiš·ta·ḥă·wōṯ bêṯ- Yah·weh ’êṯ ’al- tiḡ·ra‘ dā·ḇār — WLC · 2

Perhaps they will listen and turn— each from his evil way of life— so that I may relent of the disaster I am planning to bring upon them because of the evil of their deeds.

אוּלַ֣י יִשְׁמְע֔וּ וְיָשֻׁ֕בוּ אִ֖ישׁ הָרָעָ֑ה מִדַּרְכּ֣וֹ וְנִחַמְתִּ֣י אֶל־ הָרָעָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר אָנֹכִ֤י חֹשֵׁב֙ לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת לָהֶ֔ם מִפְּנֵ֖י רֹ֥עַ מַעַלְלֵיהֶֽם׃ ’ū·lay yiš·mə·‘ū wə·yā·šu·ḇū ’îš hā·rā·‘āh mid·dar·kōw wə·ni·ḥam·tî ’el- hā·rā·‘āh ’ă·šer ’ā·nō·ḵî ḥō·šêḇ la·‘ă·śō·wṯ lā·hem mip·pə·nê rō·a‘ ma·‘al·lê·hem — WLC · 3

And you are to tell them that this is what the LORD says: ‘If you do not listen to Me and walk in My law, which I have set before you,
𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤋𐤊𐤕 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊𐤌
וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם כֹּ֖ה יְהוָ֑ה אָמַ֣ר אִם־ לֹ֤א תִשְׁמְעוּ֙ אֵלַ֔י לָלֶ֙כֶת֙ בְּת֣וֹרָתִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָתַ֖תִּי לִפְנֵיכֶֽם׃ wə·’ā·mar·tā ’ă·lê·hem kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar ’im- lō ṯiš·mə·‘ū ’ê·lay lā·le·ḵeṯ bə·ṯō·w·rā·ṯî ’ă·šer nā·ṯat·tî lip̄·nê·ḵem — WLC · 4

and [if you do not] listen to the words of My servants the prophets, whom I have sent you again and again even though you did not listen,
𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤏𐤋 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤕𐤌
לִשְׁמֹ֗עַ עַל־ דִּבְרֵ֨י עֲבָדַ֣י הַנְּבִאִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָנֹכִ֖י שֹׁלֵ֣חַ אֲלֵיכֶ֑ם וְהַשְׁכֵּ֥ם וְשָׁלֹ֖חַ וְלֹ֥א שְׁמַעְתֶּֽם׃ liš·mō·a‘ ‘al- diḇ·rê ‘ă·ḇā·ḏay han·nə·ḇi·’îm ’ă·šer ’ā·nō·ḵî šō·lê·aḥ ’ă·lê·ḵem wə·haš·kêm wə·šā·lō·aḥ wə·lō šə·ma‘·tem — WLC · 5

then I will make this house like Shiloh, and I will make this city an object of cursing among all the nations of the earth.’”

וְנָתַתִּ֛י אֶת־ הַזֶּ֖ה הַבַּ֥יִת כְּשִׁלֹ֑ה וְאֶת־ אֶתֵּ֣ן הַזֹּאתָה הָעִ֤יר לִקְלָלָ֔ה לְכֹ֖ל גּוֹיֵ֥י הָאָֽרֶץ׃ס wə·nā·ṯat·tî ’eṯ- haz·zeh hab·ba·yiṯ kə·ši·lōh wə·’eṯ- ’et·tên haz·zō·ṯå̄h hā·‘îr liq·lā·lāh lə·ḵōl gō·w·yê hā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 6
Jeremiah Threatened with Death

Now the priests and prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the LORD,
𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
הַכֹּהֲנִ֥ים וְהַנְּבִאִ֖ים וְכָל־ הָעָ֑ם אֶֽת־ וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֛וּ יִרְמְיָ֔הוּ מְדַבֵּ֛ר אֶת־ הָאֵ֖לֶּה הַדְּבָרִ֥ים בְּבֵ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃ hak·kō·hă·nîm wə·han·nə·ḇi·’îm wə·ḵāl hā·‘ām ’eṯ- way·yiš·mə·‘ū yir·mə·yā·hū mə·ḏab·bêr ’eṯ- hā·’êl·leh had·də·ḇā·rîm bə·ḇêṯ Yah·weh — WLC · 7

and as soon as [he] had finished telling all the people everything the LORD had commanded him to say the priests and prophets and all the people seized him, shouting, “You must surely die…!
𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤊𐤊𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤐𐤔𐤅 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤕𐤌𐤅𐤕
וַיְהִ֣י׀ יִרְמְיָ֗הוּ כְּכַלּ֣וֹת לְדַבֵּר֙ אֵ֣ת כָּל־ הָעָ֑ם כָּל־ אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֔ה צִוָּ֣ה לְדַבֵּ֖ר אֶל־ הַכֹּהֲנִ֧ים וְהַנְּבִאִ֛ים וְכָל־ הָעָ֥ם וַיִּתְפְּשׂ֨וּ אֹת֜וֹ לֵאמֹ֖ר מ֥וֹת תָּמֽוּת׃ way·hî yir·mə·yā·hū kə·ḵal·lō·wṯ lə·ḏab·bêr ’êṯ kāl- hā·‘ām kāl- ’ă·šer- Yah·weh ṣiw·wāh lə·ḏab·bêr ’el- hak·kō·hă·nîm wə·han·nə·ḇi·’îm wə·ḵāl hā·‘ām way·yiṯ·pə·śū ’ō·ṯōw lê·mōr mō·wṯ tā·mūṯ — WLC · 8

How dare you prophesy in the name of the LORD that this house will become like Shiloh and this city vvv will be desolate and deserted!” And all the people assembled against Jeremiah in the house of the LORD.
𐤌𐤃𐤅𐤏 𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤁𐤔𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤔𐤋𐤅 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤌𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤁 𐤕𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤄𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
מַדּוּעַ֩ נִבֵּ֨יתָ בְשֵׁם־ יְהוָ֜ה לֵאמֹ֗ר הַזֶּ֔ה הַבַּ֣יִת יִֽהְיֶה֙ כְּשִׁלוֹ֙ הַזֹּ֛את וְהָעִ֥יר מֵאֵ֣ין יוֹשֵׁ֑ב תֶּחֱרַ֖ב כָּל־ הָעָ֛ם וַיִּקָּהֵ֧ל אֶֽל־ יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ בְּבֵ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃ mad·dū·a‘ nib·bê·ṯā ḇə·šêm- Yah·weh lê·mōr haz·zeh hab·ba·yiṯ yih·yeh kə·ši·lōw haz·zōṯ wə·hā·‘îr mê·’ên yō·wō·šêḇ te·ḥĕ·raḇ kāl- hā·‘ām way·yiq·qā·hêl ’el- yir·mə·yā·hū bə·ḇêṯ Yah·weh — WLC · 9

When the officials of Judah heard these things, they went up from the king’s palace to the house of the LORD and sat [there] at the entrance of the New Gate.

שָׂרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֗ה אֵ֚ת וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֣וּ׀ הָאֵ֔לֶּה הַדְּבָרִ֣ים וַיַּעֲל֥וּ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ מִבֵּית־ בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה וַיֵּֽשְׁב֛וּ יְהוָ֖ה בְּפֶ֥תַח הֶחָדָֽשׁ׃ס שַֽׁעַר־ śā·rê yə·hū·ḏāh ’êṯ way·yiš·mə·‘ū hā·’êl·leh had·də·ḇā·rîm way·ya·‘ă·lū ham·me·leḵ mib·bêṯ- bêṯ Yah·weh way·yê·šə·ḇū Yah·weh bə·p̄e·ṯaḥ he·ḥā·ḏāš ša·‘ar- — WLC · 10

Then the priests and prophets said to the officials and all the people…, “This man [is] worthy of death, for he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears!”

הַכֹּהֲנִ֤ים וְהַנְּבִאִים֙ וַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּ אֶל־ הַשָּׂרִ֔ים וְאֶל־ כָּל־ הָעָ֖ם לֵאמֹ֑ר הַזֶּ֔ה לָאִ֣ישׁ מִשְׁפַּט־ מָ֙וֶת֙ כִּ֤י נִבָּא֙ אֶל־ הַזֹּ֔את הָעִ֣יר כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר שְׁמַעְתֶּ֖ם בְּאָזְנֵיכֶֽם׃ hak·kō·hă·nîm wə·han·nə·ḇi·’îm way·yō·mə·rū ’el- haś·śā·rîm wə·’el- kāl- hā·‘ām lê·mōr haz·zeh lā·’îš miš·paṭ- mā·weṯ kî nib·bā ’el- haz·zōṯ hā·‘îr ka·’ă·šer šə·ma‘·tem bə·’ā·zə·nê·ḵem — WLC · 11

But Jeremiah said to all the officials and all the people…, “The LORD sent me to prophesy against this house and against this city all the words that you have heard.
𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤍𐤉 𐤋𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤕𐤌
יִרְמְיָ֙הוּ֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ כָּל־ הַשָּׂרִ֔ים וְאֶל־ כָּל־ הָעָ֖ם לֵאמֹ֑ר יְהוָ֣ה שְׁלָחַ֗נִי לְהִנָּבֵ֞א אֶל־ הַזֶּה֙ הַבַּ֤יִת וְאֶל־ הַזֹּ֔את הָעִ֣יר אֵ֥ת כָּל־ הַדְּבָרִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר שְׁמַעְתֶּֽם׃ yir·mə·yā·hū way·yō·mer ’el- kāl- haś·śā·rîm wə·’el- kāl- hā·‘ām lê·mōr Yah·weh šə·lā·ḥa·nî lə·hin·nā·ḇê ’el- haz·zeh hab·ba·yiṯ wə·’el- haz·zōṯ hā·‘îr ’êṯ kāl- had·də·ḇā·rîm ’ă·šer šə·ma‘·tem — WLC · 12

So now, correct your ways and deeds, and obey the voice of the LORD your God, so that He might relent of the disaster He has pronounced against you.

וְעַתָּ֗ה הֵיטִ֤יבוּ דַרְכֵיכֶם֙ וּמַ֣עַלְלֵיכֶ֔ם וְשִׁמְע֕וּ בְּק֖וֹל יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֑ם יְהוָ֔ה וְיִנָּחֵ֣ם אֶל־ הָ֣רָעָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבֶּ֖ר עֲלֵיכֶֽם׃ wə·‘at·tāh hê·ṭî·ḇū ḏar·ḵê·ḵem ū·ma·‘al·lê·ḵem wə·šim·‘ū bə·qō·wl Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem Yah·weh wə·yin·nā·ḥêm ’el- hā·rā·‘āh ’ă·šer dib·ber ‘ă·lê·ḵem — WLC · 13

As for me, here I am in your hands; do to me what you think is good and right.

וַאֲנִ֖י הִנְנִ֣י בְיֶדְכֶ֑ם עֲשׂוּ־ לִ֛י בְּעֵינֵיכֶֽם׃ כַּטּ֥וֹב וְכַיָּשָׁ֖ר wa·’ă·nî hin·nî ḇə·yeḏ·ḵem ‘ă·śū- lî bə·‘ê·nê·ḵem kaṭ·ṭō·wḇ wə·ḵay·yā·šār — WLC · 14

But know for certain… that if you put me to death you will bring innocent blood upon yourselves, upon this city, and upon its residents; for truly the LORD has sent me to speak all these words in your hearing -.”

Jeremiah Spared from Death

Then the officials and all the people told the priests… and prophets, “This man [is] not worthy of death, for he has spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God!”

“Micah the Moreshite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah and told… all the people of Judah that this is what… the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a heap of rubble, and the temple mount a wooded ridge.’

Did Hezekiah king of Judah [or] anyone else in Judah put him to death…? Did [Hezekiah] not fear the LORD and seek [His] favor, and did not the LORD relent of the disaster He had pronounced against them? But we are about to bring great harm on ourselves!”

The Prophet Uriah

Now there was another man… prophesying in the name of the LORD, Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath-jearim. He prophesied against this city and against this land the same things… that Jeremiah [did].

King Jehoiakim and all his mighty men and officials heard his words, and the king sought to put him to death. But when Uriah found out about it, he fled in fear and went to Egypt.

They brought Uriah out of Egypt and took him to King Jehoiakim, who had him put to the sword and his body thrown into the burial place of the common people.
