Chapter 24
The Good and Bad Figs
1
After Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had carried away Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, as well as the officials of Judah and the craftsmen and metalsmiths from Jerusalem, and had brought them to Babylon, the LORD showed me two baskets of figs placed in front of the temple of the LORD.

אַחֲרֵ֣י נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֣ר מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶ֡ל אֶת־ הַגְל֣וֹת יְכָנְיָ֣הוּ בֶן־ יְהוֹיָקִ֣ים מֶֽלֶךְ־ יְהוּדָה֩ וְאֶת־ שָׂרֵ֨י יְהוּדָ֜ה וְאֶת־ הֶחָרָ֤שׁ וְאֶת־ הַמַּסְגֵּר֙ מִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם וַיְבִאֵ֖ם בָּבֶֽל׃ יְהוָה֒ וְהִנֵּ֗ה הִרְאַנִי֮ שְׁנֵי֙ דּוּדָאֵ֣י תְאֵנִ֔ים מוּעָדִ֕ים לִפְנֵ֖י הֵיכַ֣ל יְהוָ֑ה ’a·ḥă·rê nə·ḇū·ḵaḏ·reṣ·ṣar me·leḵ- bā·ḇel ’eṯ- haḡ·lō·wṯ yə·ḵā·nə·yā·hū ḇen- yə·hō·w·yā·qîm me·leḵ- yə·hū·ḏāh wə·’eṯ- śā·rê yə·hū·ḏāh wə·’eṯ- he·ḥā·rāš wə·’eṯ- ham·mas·gêr mî·rū·šā·lim way·ḇi·’êm bā·ḇel Yah·weh wə·hin·nêh hir·’a·nî šə·nê dū·ḏā·’ê ṯə·’ê·nîm mū·‘ā·ḏîm lip̄·nê hê·ḵal Yah·weh — WLC · 1

One basket [had] very good figs, like those that ripen early…, but the other basket contained very poor figs, so bad they could not be eaten.

“Jeremiah,” the LORD asked -, “what do you see?” “Figs!” I replied. “The good figs are very good, but the bad figs are very bad, so bad they cannot be eaten.”

Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 4

“This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Like these good figs, so I regard as good the exiles from Judah, whom I have sent away from this place to the land of the Chaldeans.
𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤈𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤕𐤀𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤍 𐤀𐤊𐤉𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤈𐤅𐤁𐤄 𐤂𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤕𐤉 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤊𐤔𐤃𐤉𐤌
כֹּֽה־ יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אָמַ֤ר הָאֵ֑לֶּה הַטֹּב֖וֹת כַּתְּאֵנִ֥ים כֵּֽן־ אַכִּ֞יר אֶת־ לְטוֹבָֽה׃ גָּל֣וּת יְהוּדָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר שִׁלַּ֜חְתִּי מִן־ הַזֶּ֛ה הַמָּק֥וֹם אֶ֥רֶץ כַּשְׂדִּ֖ים kōh- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl ’ā·mar hā·’êl·leh haṭ·ṭō·ḇō·wṯ kat·tə·’ê·nîm kên- ’ak·kîr ’eṯ- lə·ṭō·w·ḇāh gā·lūṯ yə·hū·ḏāh ’ă·šer šil·laḥ·tî min- haz·zeh ham·mā·qō·wm ’e·reṣ kaś·dîm — WLC · 5

I will keep My eyes on them for good and will return them to this land. I will build them up and not tear [them] down; I will plant them and not uproot them.

וְשַׂמְתִּ֨י עֵינִ֤י עֲלֵיהֶם֙ לְטוֹבָ֔ה וַהֲשִׁבֹתִ֖ים עַל־ הַזֹּ֑את הָאָ֣רֶץ וּבְנִיתִים֙ וְלֹ֣א אֶהֱרֹ֔ס וּנְטַעְתִּ֖ים וְלֹ֥א אֶתּֽוֹשׁ׃ wə·śam·tî ‘ê·nî ‘ă·lê·hem lə·ṭō·w·ḇāh wa·hă·ši·ḇō·ṯîm ‘al- haz·zōṯ hā·’ā·reṣ ū·ḇə·nî·ṯîm wə·lō ’e·hĕ·rōs ū·nə·ṭa‘·tîm wə·lō ’et·tō·wōš — WLC · 6

I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am the LORD. They will be My people, and I will be their God, for they will return to Me with all their heart.

וְנָתַתִּי֩ לָהֶ֨ם לֵ֜ב לָדַ֣עַת אֹתִ֗י כִּ֚י אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וְהָיוּ־ לִ֣י לְעָ֔ם וְאָ֣נֹכִ֔י אֶהְיֶ֥ה לָהֶ֖ם לֵאלֹהִ֑ים כִּֽי־ יָשֻׁ֥בוּ אֵלַ֖י בְּכָל־ לִבָּֽם׃ס wə·nā·ṯat·tî lā·hem lêḇ lā·ḏa·‘aṯ ’ō·ṯî kî ’ă·nî Yah·weh wə·hā·yū- lî lə·‘ām wə·’ā·nō·ḵî ’eh·yeh lā·hem lê·lō·hîm kî- yā·šu·ḇū ’ê·lay bə·ḵāl lib·bām — WLC · 7

But like the bad figs, so bad… they cannot be eaten,’ says the LORD, ‘so will I deal with Zedekiah king of Judah, his officials, and the remnant of Jerusalem— those remaining in this land and those living in the land of Egypt.

הָֽרָע֔וֹת אֲשֶׁ֥ר וְכַתְּאֵנִים֙ מֵרֹ֑עַ כִּי־ לֹא־ תֵאָכַ֖לְנָה כֹ֣ה׀ אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֗ה כֵּ֣ן אֶ֠תֵּן אֶת־ צִדְקִיָּ֨הוּ מֶֽלֶךְ־ יְהוּדָ֤ה וְאֶת־ שָׂרָיו֙ וְאֵ֣ת׀ שְׁאֵרִ֣ית יְרוּשָׁלִַ֗ם הַנִּשְׁאָרִים֙ הַזֹּ֔את בָּאָ֣רֶץ וְהַיֹּשְׁבִ֖ים בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ hā·rā·‘ō·wṯ ’ă·šer wə·ḵat·tə·’ê·nîm mê·rō·a‘ kî- lō- ṯê·’ā·ḵal·nāh ḵōh ’ā·mar Yah·weh kên ’et·tên ’eṯ- ṣiḏ·qî·yā·hū me·leḵ- yə·hū·ḏāh wə·’eṯ- śā·rāw wə·’êṯ šə·’ê·rîṯ yə·rū·šā·lim han·niš·’ā·rîm haz·zōṯ bā·’ā·reṣ wə·hay·yō·šə·ḇîm bə·’e·reṣ miṣ·rā·yim — WLC · 8

I will make them a horror and an offense to all the kingdoms of the earth, a disgrace and an object of scorn, ridicule, and cursing wherever… I have banished them…

וּנְתַתִּים֙ לִזְוָעָה לְרָעָ֔ה לְכֹ֖ל מַמְלְכ֣וֹת הָאָ֑רֶץ לְחֶרְפָּ֤ה וּלְמָשָׁל֙ לִשְׁנִינָ֣ה וְלִקְלָלָ֔ה בְּכָל־ הַמְּקֹמ֖וֹת אֲשֶֽׁר־ אַדִּיחֵ֥ם שָֽׁם׃ ū·nə·ṯat·tîm liz·wå̄·ʿå̄h lə·rā·‘āh lə·ḵōl mam·lə·ḵō·wṯ hā·’ā·reṣ lə·ḥer·pāh ū·lə·mā·šāl liš·nî·nāh wə·liq·lā·lāh bə·ḵāl ham·mə·qō·mō·wṯ ’ă·šer- ’ad·dî·ḥêm šām — WLC · 9

And I will send against them sword and famine and plague, until they have perished from the land that I gave to them and their fathers.’”

וְשִׁלַּ֣חְתִּי אֶת־ בָ֔ם הַחֶ֖רֶב אֶת־ הָרָעָ֣ב וְאֶת־ הַדָּ֑בֶר עַד־ תֻּמָּם֙ מֵעַ֣ל הָאֲדָמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־ נָתַ֥תִּי לָהֶ֖ם וְלַאֲבוֹתֵיהֶֽם׃פ wə·šil·laḥ·tî ’eṯ- ḇām ha·ḥe·reḇ ’eṯ- hā·rā·‘āḇ wə·’eṯ- had·dā·ḇer ‘aḏ- tum·mām mê·‘al hā·’ă·ḏā·māh ’ă·šer- nā·ṯat·tî lā·hem wə·la·’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·hem — WLC · 10
