Chapter 19
The Broken Jar

This is what the LORD says: “Go and buy a clay jar from a potter. Take some of the elders of the people and leaders of the priests,
𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤊 𐤅𐤒𐤍𐤉𐤕 𐤇𐤓𐤔 𐤁𐤒𐤁𐤒 𐤉𐤅𐤑𐤓 𐤅𐤌𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌
כֹּ֚ה יְהוָ֔ה אָמַ֣ר הָל֛וֹךְ וְקָנִ֥יתָ חָ֑רֶשׂ בַקְבֻּ֖ק יוֹצֵ֣ר וּמִזִּקְנֵ֣י הָעָ֔ם וּמִזִּקְנֵ֖י הַכֹּהֲנִֽים׃ kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar hā·lō·wḵ wə·qā·nî·ṯā ḥā·reś ḇaq·buq yō·w·ṣêr ū·miz·ziq·nê hā·‘ām ū·miz·ziq·nê hak·kō·hă·nîm — WLC · 1

and go out to the Valley of Ben-hinnom… near the entrance of the Potsherd Gate. Proclaim there the words I speak to you,

וְיָצָ֙אתָ֙ אֶל־ גֵּ֣יא בֶן־ הִנֹּ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֕ר פֶּ֖תַח הַחֲרָסוּת שַׁ֣עַר וְקָרָ֣אתָ שָּׁ֔ם אֶת־ הַדְּבָרִ֖ים אֲשֶׁר־ אֲדַבֵּ֥ר אֵלֶֽיךָ׃ wə·yā·ṣā·ṯā ’el- gê ḇen- hin·nōm ’ă·šer pe·ṯaḥ ha·ḥă·rå̄·sūṯ ša·‘ar wə·qā·rā·ṯā šām ’eṯ- had·də·ḇā·rîm ’ă·šer- ’ă·ḏab·bêr ’ê·le·ḵā — WLC · 2

saying, ‘Hear the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah and residents of Jerusalem. This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel,… says: I am going to bring such disaster on this place that the ears of all who hear of it will ring,

וְאָֽמַרְתָּ֙ שִׁמְע֣וּ דְבַר־ יְהוָ֔ה מַלְכֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה וְיֹשְׁבֵ֖י יְרֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם כֹּֽה־ יְהוָ֨ה צְבָא֜וֹת אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל הִנְנִ֨י אָמַר֩ מֵבִ֤יא רָעָה֙ עַל־ הַזֶּ֔ה הַמָּק֣וֹם אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָזְנָֽיו׃ כָּל־ שֹׁמְעָ֖הּ תִּצַּ֥לְנָה wə·’ā·mar·tā šim·‘ū ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh mal·ḵê yə·hū·ḏāh wə·yō·šə·ḇê yə·rū·šā·lim kōh- Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl hin·nî ’ā·mar mê·ḇî rā·‘āh ‘al- haz·zeh ham·mā·qō·wm ’ă·šer ’ā·zə·nāw kāl- šō·mə·‘āh tiṣ·ṣal·nāh — WLC · 3

because they have abandoned Me and made this a foreign place. They have burned incense in [this place] to other gods that [neither] they nor their fathers nor the kings of Judah have [ever] known. They have filled this place with the blood of the innocent.

יַ֣עַן׀ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עֲזָבֻ֗נִי הַזֶּה֙ וַֽיְנַכְּר֞וּ אֶת־ הַמָּק֤וֹם וַיְקַטְּרוּ־ בוֹ֙ אֲחֵרִ֔ים לֵאלֹהִ֣ים אֲשֶׁ֧ר הֵ֥מָּה וַאֲבֽוֹתֵיהֶ֖ם וּמַלְכֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה לֹֽא־ יְדָע֛וּם וּמָֽלְא֛וּ אֶת־ הַזֶּ֖ה הַמָּק֥וֹם דַּ֥ם נְקִיִּֽם׃ ya·‘an ’ă·šer ‘ă·zā·ḇu·nî haz·zeh way·nak·kə·rū ’eṯ- ham·mā·qō·wm way·qaṭ·ṭə·rū- ḇōw ’ă·ḥê·rîm lê·lō·hîm ’ă·šer hêm·māh wa·’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·hem ū·mal·ḵê yə·hū·ḏāh lō- yə·ḏā·‘ūm ū·mā·lə·’ū ’eṯ- haz·zeh ham·mā·qō·wm dam nə·qî·yim — WLC · 4

They have built high places to Baal on which to burn their children in the fire as offerings to Baal— something I never commanded or mentioned,… nor did it [even] enter… My mind.

וּבָנ֞וּ אֶת־ בָּמ֣וֹת הַבַּ֗עַל לִשְׂרֹ֧ף אֶת־ בְּנֵיהֶ֛ם בָּאֵ֖שׁ עֹל֣וֹת לַבָּ֑עַל אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־ צִוִּ֙יתִי֙ דִבַּ֔רְתִּי וְלֹ֥א וְלֹ֣א עָלְתָ֖ה עַל־ לִבִּֽי׃פ ū·ḇā·nū ’eṯ- bā·mō·wṯ hab·ba·‘al liś·rōp̄ ’eṯ- bə·nê·hem bā·’êš ‘ō·lō·wṯ lab·bā·‘al ’ă·šer lō- ṣiw·wî·ṯî ḏib·bar·tî wə·lō wə·lō ‘ā·lə·ṯāh ‘al- lib·bî — WLC · 5

So behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when this place will no longer be called Topheth or the Valley of Ben-hinnom…, but… the Valley of Slaughter.

לָכֵ֞ן הִנֵּֽה־ יָמִ֤ים בָּאִים֙ נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֔ה הַזֶּ֥ה לַמָּק֨וֹם וְלֹא־ ע֛וֹד יִקָּרֵא֩ הַתֹּ֖פֶת וְגֵ֣יא בֶן־ הִנֹּ֑ם כִּ֖י אִם־ גֵּ֥יא הַהֲרֵגָֽה׃ lā·ḵên hin·nêh- yā·mîm bā·’îm nə·’um- Yah·weh haz·zeh lam·mā·qō·wm wə·lō- ‘ō·wḏ yiq·qā·rê hat·tō·p̄eṯ wə·ḡê ḇen- hin·nōm kî ’im- gê ha·hă·rê·ḡāh — WLC · 6

And in this place I will ruin the plans of Judah and Jerusalem. I will make them fall by the sword before their enemies, by the hands of those who seek their lives, and I will give their carcasses as food to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth.

הַזֶּ֔ה בַּמָּק֣וֹם וּ֠בַקֹּתִי אֶת־ עֲצַ֨ת יְהוּדָ֤ה וִירוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ וְהִפַּלְתִּ֤ים בַּחֶ֙רֶב֙ לִפְנֵ֣י אֹֽיְבֵיהֶ֔ם וּבְיַ֖ד מְבַקְשֵׁ֣י נַפְשָׁ֑ם וְנָתַתִּ֤י אֶת־ נִבְלָתָם֙ לְמַֽאֲכָ֔ל לְע֥וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וּלְבֶהֱמַ֥ת הָאָֽרֶץ׃ haz·zeh bam·mā·qō·wm ū·ḇaq·qō·ṯî ’eṯ- ‘ă·ṣaṯ yə·hū·ḏāh wî·rū·šā·lim wə·hip·pal·tîm ba·ḥe·reḇ lip̄·nê ’ō·yə·ḇê·hem ū·ḇə·yaḏ mə·ḇaq·šê nap̄·šām wə·nā·ṯat·tî ’eṯ- niḇ·lā·ṯām lə·ma·’ă·ḵāl lə·‘ō·wp̄ haš·šā·ma·yim ū·lə·ḇe·hĕ·maṯ hā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 7

I will make this city a desolation and an [object of] scorn. All who pass by will be appalled and will scoff at all her wounds.

וְשַׂמְתִּי֙ אֶת־ הַזֹּ֔את הָעִ֣יר לְשַׁמָּ֖ה וְלִשְׁרֵקָ֑ה כֹּ֚ל עֹבֵ֣ר עָלֶ֔יהָ יִשֹּׁ֥ם וְיִשְׁרֹ֖ק עַל־ כָּל־ מַכֹּתֶֽהָ׃ wə·śam·tî ’eṯ- haz·zōṯ hā·‘îr lə·šam·māh wə·liš·rê·qāh kōl ‘ō·ḇêr ‘ā·le·hā yiš·šōm wə·yiš·rōq ‘al- kāl- mak·kō·ṯe·hā — WLC · 8

I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and daughters, and they will eat one another’s flesh in the siege and distress inflicted on them by their enemies who seek their lives.’

וְהַֽאֲכַלְתִּ֞ים אֶת־ בְּשַׂ֣ר בְּנֵיהֶ֗ם וְאֵת֙ בְּשַׂ֣ר בְּנֹתֵיהֶ֔ם יֹאכֵ֑לוּ וְאִ֥ישׁ רֵעֵ֖הוּ בְּשַׂר־ בְּמָצוֹר֙ וּבְמָצ֔וֹק אֲשֶׁ֨ר יָצִ֧יקוּ לָהֶ֛ם אֹיְבֵיהֶ֖ם וּמְבַקְשֵׁ֥י נַפְשָֽׁם׃ wə·ha·’ă·ḵal·tîm ’eṯ- bə·śar bə·nê·hem wə·’êṯ bə·śar bə·nō·ṯê·hem yō·ḵê·lū wə·’îš rê·‘ê·hū bə·śar- bə·mā·ṣō·wr ū·ḇə·mā·ṣō·wq ’ă·šer yā·ṣî·qū lā·hem ’ō·yə·ḇê·hem ū·mə·ḇaq·šê nap̄·šām — WLC · 9

Then you are to shatter the jar in the presence of the men who accompany you,
𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤓𐤕 𐤄𐤁𐤒𐤁𐤒 𐤋𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤊
וְשָׁבַרְתָּ֖ הַבַּקְבֻּ֑ק לְעֵינֵי֙ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֔ים הַהֹלְכִ֖ים אוֹתָֽךְ׃ wə·šā·ḇar·tā hab·baq·buq lə·‘ê·nê hā·’ă·nā·šîm ha·hō·lə·ḵîm ’ō·w·ṯāḵ — WLC · 10

and you are to proclaim to them that this is what the LORD of Hosts… says: I will shatter this nation and this city, like one shatters a potter’s jar that can never again be repaired. They will bury the dead in Topheth until there is no more room to bury [them].

וְאָמַרְתָּ֨ אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם כֹּה־ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֗וֹת כָּ֣כָה אָמַ֣ר׀ אֶשְׁבֹּ֞ר אֶת־ הַזֶּה֙ וְאֶת־ הָעָ֤ם הַזֹּ֔את הָעִ֣יר כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר יִשְׁבֹּר֙ אֶת־ הַיּוֹצֵ֔ר כְּלִ֣י אֲשֶׁ֛ר יוּכַ֥ל לֹֽא־ ע֑וֹד לְהֵרָפֵ֖ה יִקְבְּר֔וּ וּבְתֹ֣פֶת מֵאֵ֥ין מָק֖וֹם לִקְבּֽוֹר׃ wə·’ā·mar·tā ’ă·lê·hem kōh- Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ kā·ḵāh ’ā·mar ’eš·bōr ’eṯ- haz·zeh wə·’eṯ- hā·‘ām haz·zōṯ hā·‘îr ka·’ă·šer yiš·bōr ’eṯ- hay·yō·w·ṣêr kə·lî ’ă·šer yū·ḵal lō- ‘ō·wḏ lə·hê·rā·p̄êh yiq·bə·rū ū·ḇə·ṯō·p̄eṯ mê·’ên mā·qō·wm liq·bō·wr — WLC · 11

This is what I will do to this place and to its residents, declares the LORD. I will make this city like Topheth.

כֵּֽן־ אֶעֱשֶׂ֞ה הַזֶּ֛ה לַמָּק֥וֹם וּלְיֽוֹשְׁבָ֑יו נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֖ה וְלָתֵ֛ת אֶת־ הַזֹּ֖את הָעִ֥יר כְּתֹֽפֶת׃ kên- ’e·‘ĕ·śeh haz·zeh lam·mā·qō·wm ū·lə·yō·wō·šə·ḇāw nə·’um- Yah·weh wə·lā·ṯêṯ ’eṯ- haz·zōṯ hā·‘îr kə·ṯō·p̄eṯ — WLC · 12

The houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be defiled like that place, Topheth— all the houses on whose rooftops they burned incense to all the host of heaven and poured out drink offerings to other gods.”

בָּתֵּ֣י יְרוּשָׁלִַ֗ם וּבָתֵּי֙ מַלְכֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה וְהָי֞וּ הַטְּמֵאִ֑ים כִּמְק֥וֹם הַתֹּ֖פֶת לְכֹ֣ל הַבָּתִּ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר עַל־ גַּגֹּֽתֵיהֶם֙ קִטְּר֜וּ לְכֹל֙ צְבָ֣א הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וְהַסֵּ֥ךְ נְסָכִ֖ים אֲחֵרִֽים׃פ לֵאלֹהִ֥ים bāt·tê yə·rū·šā·lim ū·ḇāt·tê mal·ḵê yə·hū·ḏāh wə·hā·yū haṭ·ṭə·mê·’îm kim·qō·wm hat·tō·p̄eṯ lə·ḵōl hab·bāt·tîm ’ă·šer ‘al- gag·gō·ṯê·hem qiṭ·ṭə·rū lə·ḵōl ṣə·ḇā haš·šā·ma·yim wə·has·sêḵ nə·sā·ḵîm ’ă·ḥê·rîm lê·lō·hîm — WLC · 13

Then Jeremiah returned from Topheth, where the LORD… had sent him to prophesy, and he stood in the courtyard of the house of the LORD and proclaimed to all the people,

“This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I am about to bring on this city and on all the villages around it every disaster I have pronounced against them, because they have stiffened their necks so as not to heed My words.’”
