Chapter 11

The Broken Covenant

1

[This is] the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD…:

𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤌𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

הַדָּבָר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָיָ֣ה אֶֽל־ יִרְמְיָ֔הוּ מֵאֵ֥ת יְהוָ֖ה לֵאמֹֽר׃ had·dā·ḇār ’ă·šer hā·yāh ’el- yir·mə·yā·hū mê·’êṯ Yah·weh lê·mōrWLC · 1

“Listen to the words of this covenant and tell them to the men of Judah… and the residents of Jerusalem.

𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌

שִׁמְע֕וּ אֶת־ דִּבְרֵ֖י הַזֹּ֑את הַבְּרִ֣ית וְדִבַּרְתָּם֙ אֶל־ אִ֣ישׁ יְהוּדָ֔ה וְעַל־ יֹשְׁבֵ֖י יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ šim·‘ū ’eṯ- diḇ·rê haz·zōṯ hab·bə·rîṯ wə·ḏib·bar·tām ’el- ’îš yə·hū·ḏāh wə·‘al- yō·šə·ḇê yə·rū·šā·limWLC · 2

You must tell them that… this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Cursed is the man who does not obey the words of this covenant,

𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤀𐤕 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕

וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם כֹּֽה־ יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אָמַ֥ר אָר֣וּר הָאִ֔ישׁ אֲשֶׁר֙ לֹ֣א יִשְׁמַ֔ע אֶת־ דִּבְרֵ֖י הַזֹּֽאת׃ הַבְּרִ֥ית wə·’ā·mar·tā ’ă·lê·hem kōh- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl ’ā·mar ’ā·rūr hā·’îš ’ă·šer lō yiš·ma‘ ’eṯ- diḇ·rê haz·zōṯ hab·bə·rîṯWLC · 3

which I commanded your forefathers when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the iron furnace, saying, ‘Obey Me,… and do everything I command you, and you will be My people, and I will be your God.’

𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤑𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤅𐤑𐤉𐤀𐤉 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤁𐤓𐤆𐤋 𐤌𐤊𐤅𐤓 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤁𐤒𐤅𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤊𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤑𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤉𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌

אֲשֶׁ֣ר צִוִּ֣יתִי אֶת־ אֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֡ם בְּי֣וֹם הוֹצִיאִֽי־ אוֹתָ֣ם מֵאֶֽרֶץ־ מִצְרַיִם֩ הַבַּרְזֶ֜ל מִכּ֨וּר לֵאמֹ֗ר שִׁמְע֤וּ בְקוֹלִי֙ וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֣ם אוֹתָ֔ם כְּכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־ אֲצַוֶּ֖ה אֶתְכֶ֑ם וִהְיִ֤יתֶם לִי֙ לְעָ֔ם וְאָ֣נֹכִ֔י אֶהְיֶ֥ה לָכֶ֖ם לֵאלֹהִֽים׃ ’ă·šer ṣiw·wî·ṯî ’eṯ- ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·ḵem bə·yō·wm hō·w·ṣî·’î- ’ō·w·ṯām mê·’e·reṣ- miṣ·ra·yim hab·bar·zel mik·kūr lê·mōr šim·‘ū ḇə·qō·w·lî wa·‘ă·śî·ṯem ’ō·w·ṯām kə·ḵōl ’ă·šer- ’ă·ṣaw·weh ’eṯ·ḵem wih·yî·ṯem lî lə·‘ām wə·’ā·nō·ḵî ’eh·yeh lā·ḵem lê·lō·hîmWLC · 4

[This was] in order to establish the oath I swore to your forefathers, to give them… a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is to this day…” “Amen, LORD,” I answered…

𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤄𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤅𐤏𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤕𐤕 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤆𐤁𐤕 𐤇𐤋𐤁 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤔 𐤊𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄𐤎 𐤅𐤀𐤏𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓

לְמַעַן֩ הָקִ֨ים אֶת־ הַשְּׁבוּעָ֜ה אֲשֶׁר־ נִשְׁבַּ֣עְתִּי לַאֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֗ם לָתֵ֤ת לָהֶם֙ אֶ֣רֶץ זָבַ֥ת חָלָ֛ב וּדְבַ֖שׁ כַּיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה אָמֵ֥ן׀ יְהוָֽה׃ס וָאַ֥עַן וָאֹמַ֖ר lə·ma·‘an hā·qîm ’eṯ- haš·šə·ḇū·‘āh ’ă·šer- niš·ba‘·tî la·’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·ḵem lā·ṯêṯ lā·hem ’e·reṣ zā·ḇaṯ ḥā·lāḇ ū·ḏə·ḇaš kay·yō·wm haz·zeh ’ā·mên Yah·weh wā·’a·‘an wā·’ō·marWLC · 5

Then the LORD said to me, “Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, saying: Hear the words of this covenant and carry them out. -

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤏𐤓𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤇𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌

יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלַ֔י קְרָ֨א אֶת־ כָּל־ הָאֵ֙לֶּה֙ הַדְּבָרִ֤ים בְּעָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה וּבְחֻצ֥וֹת יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם לֵאמֹ֑ר שִׁמְע֗וּ אֶת־ דִּבְרֵי֙ הַזֹּ֔את הַבְּרִ֣ית וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֖ם אוֹתָֽם׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’ê·lay qə·rā ’eṯ- kāl- hā·’êl·leh had·də·ḇā·rîm bə·‘ā·rê yə·hū·ḏāh ū·ḇə·ḥu·ṣō·wṯ yə·rū·šā·lim lê·mōr šim·‘ū ’eṯ- diḇ·rê haz·zōṯ hab·bə·rîṯ wa·‘ă·śî·ṯem ’ō·w·ṯāmWLC · 6

For from the time I brought your fathers out of the land of Egypt until today…, I strongly warned them… again and again…, saying, ‘Obey My voice.’

𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤃 𐤄𐤏𐤃𐤕𐤉 𐤄𐤔𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤃 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤁𐤒𐤅𐤋𐤉

כִּי֩ בְּיוֹם֩ הַעֲלוֹתִ֨י בַּאֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֗ם אוֹתָ֜ם מֵאֶ֤רֶץ מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ וְעַד־ הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה הָעֵ֨ד הַעִדֹ֜תִי הַשְׁכֵּ֥ם וְהָעֵ֖ד לֵאמֹ֑ר שִׁמְע֖וּ בְּקוֹלִֽי׃ kî bə·yō·wm ha·‘ă·lō·w·ṯî ba·’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·ḵem ’ō·w·ṯām mê·’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim wə·‘aḏ- hay·yō·wm haz·zeh hā·‘êḏ ha·‘i·ḏō·ṯî haš·kêm wə·hā·‘êḏ lê·mōr šim·‘ū bə·qō·w·lîWLC · 7

Yet they would not obey or incline their ears, but each one followed the stubbornness of his evil heart. So I brought on them all the curses of this covenant I had commanded them to follow but they did not keep…”

𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤄𐤈𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤁𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤓𐤏 𐤋𐤁𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤑𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤎 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤋𐤀

וְלֹ֤א וְלֹֽא־ שָֽׁמְעוּ֙ הִטּ֣וּ אֶת־ אָזְנָ֔ם אִ֕ישׁ וַיֵּ֣לְכ֔וּ בִּשְׁרִיר֖וּת הָרָ֑ע לִבָּ֣ם וָאָבִ֨יא עֲלֵיהֶ֜ם אֶֽת־ כָּל־ דִּבְרֵ֧י הַזֹּ֛את הַבְּרִית־ אֲשֶׁר־ צִוִּ֥יתִי עָשֽׂוּ׃ס לַעֲשׂ֖וֹת וְלֹ֥א wə·lō wə·lō- šā·mə·‘ū hiṭ·ṭū ’eṯ- ’ā·zə·nām ’îš way·yê·lə·ḵū biš·rî·rūṯ hā·rā‘ lib·bām wā·’ā·ḇî ‘ă·lê·hem ’eṯ- kāl- diḇ·rê haz·zōṯ hab·bə·rîṯ- ’ă·šer- ṣiw·wî·ṯî ‘ā·śū la·‘ă·śō·wṯ wə·lōWLC · 8

And the LORD told me, “There is a conspiracy among the men of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤍𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤒𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌

יְהוָ֖ה וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֵלָ֑י נִֽמְצָא־ קֶ֙שֶׁר֙ בְּאִ֣ישׁ יְהוּדָ֔ה וּבְיֹשְׁבֵ֖י יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’ê·lāy nim·ṣā- qe·šer bə·’îš yə·hū·ḏāh ū·ḇə·yō·šə·ḇê yə·rū·šā·limWLC · 9

They have returned to the sins of their forefathers… who refused to obey My words. They have followed… other gods to serve them. The house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken the covenant I made with their fathers.

𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤄𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤀𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤏 𐤀𐤕 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤐𐤓𐤅 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤌𐤎

שָׁ֩בוּ֩ עַל־ עֲוֺנֹ֨ת אֲבוֹתָ֜ם הָרִֽאשֹׁנִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֤ר מֵֽאֲנוּ֙ לִשְׁמ֣וֹעַ אֶת־ דְּבָרַ֔י וְהֵ֣מָּה הָלְכ֗וּ אַחֲרֵ֛י אֲחֵרִ֖ים אֱלֹהִ֥ים לְעָבְדָ֑ם בֵֽית־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וּבֵ֣ית יְהוּדָ֔ה אֶת־ הֵפֵ֤רוּ בְּרִיתִ֕י אֲשֶׁ֥ר כָּרַ֖תִּי אֶת־ אֲבוֹתָֽם׃ס šā·ḇū ‘al- ‘ă·wō·nōṯ ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯām hā·ri·šō·nîm ’ă·šer mê·’ă·nū liš·mō·w·a‘ ’eṯ- də·ḇā·ray wə·hêm·māh hā·lə·ḵū ’a·ḥă·rê ’ă·ḥê·rîm ’ĕ·lō·hîm lə·‘ā·ḇə·ḏām ḇêṯ- yiś·rā·’êl ū·ḇêṯ yə·hū·ḏāh ’eṯ- hê·p̄ê·rū bə·rî·ṯî ’ă·šer kā·rat·tî ’eṯ- ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯāmWLC · 10

Therefore this is what the LORD… says: ‘I am about to bring upon them a disaster that they cannot… escape… They will cry out to Me, but I will not listen to them.

𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤅𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤋𐤑𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤆𐤏𐤒𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌

לָכֵ֗ן כֹּ֚ה יְהוָ֔ה הִנְנִ֨י אָמַ֣ר מֵבִ֤יא אֲלֵיהֶם֙ רָעָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־ יוּכְל֖וּ לָצֵ֣את מִמֶּ֑נָּה וְזָעֲק֣וּ אֵלַ֔י וְלֹ֥א אֶשְׁמַ֖ע אֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ lā·ḵên kōh Yah·weh hin·nî ’ā·mar mê·ḇî ’ă·lê·hem rā·‘āh ’ă·šer lō- yū·ḵə·lū lā·ṣêṯ mim·men·nāh wə·zā·‘ă·qū ’ê·lay wə·lō ’eš·ma‘ ’ă·lê·hemWLC · 11

Then the cities of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem will go and cry out to the gods to which they have been burning incense but [these gods] certainly will not save… them in their time of disaster.

𐤏𐤓𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤅𐤆𐤏𐤒𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤌 𐤌𐤒𐤈𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤏𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤓𐤏𐤕𐤌

עָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֗ה וְיֹשְׁבֵי֙ יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם וְהָֽלְכ֞וּ וְזָֽעֲקוּ֙ אֶל־ הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֛ר הֵ֥ם מְקַטְּרִ֖ים לָהֶ֑ם לֹֽא־ וְהוֹשֵׁ֛עַ יוֹשִׁ֥יעוּ לָהֶ֖ם בְּעֵ֥ת רָעָתָֽם׃ ‘ā·rê yə·hū·ḏāh wə·yō·šə·ḇê yə·rū·šā·lim wə·hā·lə·ḵū wə·zā·‘ă·qū ’el- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ’ă·šer hêm mə·qaṭ·ṭə·rîm lā·hem lō- wə·hō·wō·šê·a‘ yō·wō·šî·‘ū lā·hem bə·‘êṯ rā·‘ā·ṯāmWLC · 12

Your gods are indeed as numerous as your cities, O Judah; the altars of shame you have set up— the altars to burn incense to Baal— are as many as the streets of Jerusalem.’

𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤁𐤔𐤕 𐤔𐤌𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤒𐤈𐤓 𐤋𐤁𐤏𐤋𐤎 𐤅𐤌𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤇𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌

אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ הָי֥וּ כִּ֚י מִסְפַּ֣ר עָרֶ֔יךָ יְהוּדָ֑ה מִזְבְּחוֹת֙ לַבֹּ֔שֶׁת שַׂמְתֶּ֤ם מִזְבְּח֖וֹת לְקַטֵּ֥ר לַבָּֽעַל׃ס וּמִסְפַּ֞ר חֻצ֣וֹת יְרוּשָׁלִַ֗ם ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā hā·yū kî mis·par ‘ā·re·ḵā yə·hū·ḏāh miz·bə·ḥō·wṯ lab·bō·šeṯ śam·tem miz·bə·ḥō·wṯ lə·qaṭ·ṭêr lab·bā·‘al ū·mis·par ḥu·ṣō·wṯ yə·rū·šā·limWLC · 13

As for you, do not pray for these people. Do not raise up a cry or a prayer on their behalf, for I will not be listening when they call out to Me… in their time of disaster.

What right has My beloved in My house, having carried out so many evil schemes? Can consecrated meat avert [your doom]? When you are wicked, then you rejoice.

The LORD once called you a flourishing olive tree, beautiful with well-formed fruit. But with a mighty roar… He will set it on fire…, and its branches will be consumed.

The LORD of Hosts, who planted you, has decreed disaster against you on account of the evil that the house of Israel and the house of Judah have brought upon themselves,… provoking Me to anger by burning incense to Baal.”

And the LORD informed me, so I knew. Then You showed me their deeds.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤉𐤏𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤃𐤏𐤄 𐤀𐤆 𐤄𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌

וַֽיהוָ֥ה הֽוֹדִיעַ֖נִי וָֽאֵדָ֑עָה אָ֖ז הִרְאִיתַ֥נִי מַעַלְלֵיהֶֽם׃ Yah·weh hō·w·ḏî·‘a·nî wā·’ê·ḏā·‘āh ’āz hir·’î·ṯa·nî ma·‘al·lê·hemWLC · 18

For I was like a gentle lamb led to slaughter; I did not know that they had plotted… against me: “Let us destroy the tree with its fruit; let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be remembered no more.”

O LORD of Hosts, who judges righteously, who examines the heart and mind, let me see Your vengeance upon them, for to You I have committed my cause.

Therefore this is what the LORD says concerning the people of Anathoth who are seeking your life and saying, “You must not prophesy in the name of the LORD,… or you will die by our hand.”

לָכֵ֗ן כֹּֽה־ יְהוָה֙ אָמַ֤ר עַל־ אַנְשֵׁ֣י עֲנָת֔וֹת הַֽמְבַקְשִׁ֥ים אֶֽת־ נַפְשְׁךָ֖ לֵאמֹ֑ר לֹ֤א תִנָּבֵא֙ בְּשֵׁ֣ם יְהוָ֔ה וְלֹ֥א תָמ֖וּת בְּיָדֵֽנוּ׃ס lā·ḵên kōh- Yah·weh ’ā·mar ‘al- ’an·šê ‘ă·nā·ṯō·wṯ ham·ḇaq·šîm ’eṯ- nap̄·šə·ḵā lê·mōr lō ṯin·nā·ḇê bə·šêm Yah·weh wə·lō ṯā·mūṯ bə·yā·ḏê·nūWLC · 21

So this is what the LORD of Hosts… says: “I will punish them… Their young men will die by the sword, their sons and daughters by famine.

There will be no remnant, for I will bring disaster on the people of Anathoth in the year of their punishment.”
