Chapter 10

The Sovereignty of God

1

Hear the word that the LORD speaks to you, O house of Israel.

𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

שִׁמְע֣וּ אֶת־ הַדָּבָ֗ר אֲשֶׁ֨ר יְהוָ֛ה דִּבֶּ֧ר עֲלֵיכֶ֖ם בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ šim·‘ū ’eṯ- had·dā·ḇār ’ă·šer Yah·weh dib·ber ‘ă·lê·ḵem bêṯ yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 1

This is what the LORD… says: “Do not learn the ways of the nations or be terrified by the signs in the heavens…, though the nations [themselves] are terrified by them.

𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤋𐤌𐤃𐤅 𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤇𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤀𐤕𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤇𐤕𐤅 𐤌𐤄𐤌𐤄

כֹּ֣ה׀ יְהוָ֗ה אֶל־ אָמַ֣ר אַל־ תִּלְמָ֔דוּ דֶּ֤רֶךְ הַגּוֹיִם֙ תֵּחָ֑תּוּ וּמֵאֹת֥וֹת הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם אַל־ כִּֽי־ הַגּוֹיִ֖ם יֵחַ֥תּוּ מֵהֵֽמָּה׃ kōh Yah·weh ’el- ’ā·mar ’al- til·mā·ḏū de·reḵ hag·gō·w·yim tê·ḥāt·tū ū·mê·’ō·ṯō·wṯ haš·šā·ma·yim ’al- kî- hag·gō·w·yim yê·ḥat·tū mê·hêm·māhWLC · 2

For the customs of the peoples are worthless;… they cut down a tree from the forest; it is shaped with a chisel by the hands of a craftsman.

𐤊𐤉 𐤇𐤒𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤁𐤋 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤅 𐤏𐤑 𐤌𐤉𐤏𐤓 𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤁𐤌𐤏𐤑𐤃 𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤇𐤓𐤔

כִּֽי־ חֻקּ֥וֹת הָֽעַמִּ֖ים הֶ֣בֶל ה֑וּא כִּֽי־ כְּרָת֔וֹ עֵץ֙ מִיַּ֣עַר מַעֲשֵׂ֥ה בַּֽמַּעֲצָֽד׃ יְדֵ֥י־ חָרָ֖שׁ kî- ḥuq·qō·wṯ hā·‘am·mîm he·ḇel hū kî- kə·rā·ṯōw ‘êṣ mî·ya·‘ar ma·‘ă·śêh bam·ma·‘ă·ṣāḏ yə·ḏê- ḥā·rāšWLC · 3

They adorn it with silver and gold and fasten it with hammer and nails, so that it will not totter.

יְיַפֵּ֑הוּ בְּכֶ֥סֶף וּבְזָהָ֖ב יְחַזְּק֖וּם וּבְמַקָּב֛וֹת בְּמַסְמְר֧וֹת וְל֥וֹא יָפִֽיק׃ yə·yap·pê·hū bə·ḵe·sep̄ ū·ḇə·zā·hāḇ yə·ḥaz·zə·qūm ū·ḇə·maq·qā·ḇō·wṯ bə·mas·mə·rō·wṯ wə·lō·w yā·p̄îqWLC · 4

Like scarecrows in a cucumber patch, their idols cannot speak. They must be carried… because they cannot walk. Do not fear them, for they can do no harm, and neither can they… do any good.”

כְּתֹ֨מֶר מִקְשָׁ֥ה הֵ֙מָּה֙ וְלֹ֣א יְדַבֵּ֔רוּ נָשׂ֥וֹא יִנָּשׂ֖וּא כִּ֣י לֹ֣א יִצְעָ֑דוּ אַל־ תִּֽירְא֤וּ מֵהֶם֙ כִּי־ לֹ֣א יָרֵ֔עוּ וְגַם־ אֵ֥ין אוֹתָֽם׃ס הֵיטֵ֖יב kə·ṯō·mer miq·šāh hêm·māh wə·lō yə·ḏab·bê·rū nā·śō·w yin·nā·śū kî lō yiṣ·‘ā·ḏū ’al- tî·rə·’ū mê·hem kî- lō yā·rê·‘ū wə·ḡam- ’ên ’ō·w·ṯām hê·ṭêḇWLC · 5

There is none like You, O LORD. You are great, and Your name is mighty in power.

𐤌𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤊𐤌𐤅𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤔𐤌𐤊 𐤅𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤁𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤓𐤄

מֵאֵ֥ין כָּמ֖וֹךָ יְהוָ֑ה אַתָּ֛ה גָּד֥וֹל שִׁמְךָ֖ וְגָד֥וֹל בִּגְבוּרָֽה׃ mê·’ên kā·mō·w·ḵā Yah·weh ’at·tāh gā·ḏō·wl šim·ḵā wə·ḡā·ḏō·wl biḡ·ḇū·rāhWLC · 6

Who would not fear You, O King of nations? This is Your due For among all the wise [men] of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like You.

𐤌𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤊 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤉 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤊𐤌𐤅𐤊

מִ֣י לֹ֤א יִֽרָאֲךָ֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ הַגּוֹיִ֔ם כִּ֥י יָאָ֑תָה לְךָ֖ כִּ֣י בְכָל־ חַכְמֵ֧י הַגּוֹיִ֛ם וּבְכָל־ מַלְכוּתָ֖ם מֵאֵ֥ין כָּמֽוֹךָ׃ mî lō yi·rā·’ă·ḵā me·leḵ hag·gō·w·yim kî yā·’ā·ṯāh lə·ḵā kî ḇə·ḵāl- ḥaḵ·mê hag·gō·w·yim ū·ḇə·ḵāl mal·ḵū·ṯām mê·’ên kā·mō·w·ḵāWLC · 7

But they are altogether senseless and foolish, instructed by worthless idols made of wood!…

𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤉𐤁𐤏𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤎𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤅𐤎𐤓 𐤄𐤁𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤑 𐤄𐤅𐤀

וּבְאַחַ֖ת יִבְעֲר֣וּ וְיִכְסָ֑לוּ מוּסַ֥ר הֲבָלִ֖ים עֵ֥ץ הֽוּא׃ ū·ḇə·’a·ḥaṯ yiḇ·‘ă·rū wə·yiḵ·sā·lū mū·sar hă·ḇā·lîm ‘êṣ hūWLC · 8

Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz— the work of a craftsman from the hands of a goldsmith. Their clothes are blue and purple, all fashioned by skilled workers.

𐤌𐤓𐤒𐤏 𐤊𐤎𐤐 𐤉𐤅𐤁𐤀 𐤌𐤕𐤓𐤔𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤆𐤄𐤁 𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤐𐤆 𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤇𐤓𐤔 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤑𐤅𐤓𐤐 𐤋𐤁𐤅𐤔𐤌 𐤕𐤊𐤋𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤂𐤌𐤍 𐤊𐤋𐤌 𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤉𐤌

מְרֻקָּ֞ע כֶּ֣סֶף יוּבָ֗א מִתַּרְשִׁ֣ישׁ וְזָהָב֙ מֵֽאוּפָ֔ז מַעֲשֵׂ֥ה חָרָ֖שׁ וִידֵ֣י צוֹרֵ֑ף לְבוּשָׁ֔ם תְּכֵ֤לֶת וְאַרְגָּמָן֙ כֻּלָּֽם׃ מַעֲשֵׂ֥ה חֲכָמִ֖ים mə·ruq·qā‘ ke·sep̄ yū·ḇā mit·tar·šîš wə·zā·hāḇ mê·’ū·p̄āz ma·‘ă·śêh ḥā·rāš wî·ḏê ṣō·w·rêp̄ lə·ḇū·šām tə·ḵê·leṯ wə·’ar·gā·mān kul·lām ma·‘ă·śêh ḥă·ḵā·mîmWLC · 9

But the LORD is the true God; He is the living God and eternal King. The earth quakes at His wrath, and the nations cannot endure His indignation.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤕𐤓𐤏𐤔 𐤌𐤒𐤑𐤐𐤅 𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤆𐤏𐤌𐤅𐤎

וַֽיהוָ֤ה אֱמֶ֔ת אֱלֹהִים֙ הֽוּא־ חַיִּ֖ים אֱלֹהִ֥ים עוֹלָ֑ם וּמֶ֣לֶךְ הָאָ֔רֶץ תִּרְעַ֣שׁ מִקִּצְפּוֹ֙ גוֹיִ֖ם וְלֹֽא־ יָכִ֥לוּ זַעְמֽוֹ׃ס Yah·weh ’ĕ·meṯ ’ĕ·lō·hîm hū- ḥay·yîm ’ĕ·lō·hîm ‘ō·w·lām ū·me·leḵ hā·’ā·reṣ tir·‘aš miq·qiṣ·pōw ḡō·w·yim wə·lō- yā·ḵi·lū za‘·mōwWLC · 10

Thus you are to tell them: “[These] gods, who have made neither the heavens [nor] the earth, will perish from this earth and from under these heavens.”

𐤊𐤃𐤍𐤄 𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤋𐤄𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤃𐤉 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤀 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤒𐤀 𐤉𐤀𐤁𐤃𐤅 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤏𐤀 𐤅𐤌𐤍 𐤕𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤎 𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤀

כִּדְנָה֙ תֵּאמְר֣וּן לְה֔וֹם אֱלָ֣הַיָּ֔א דִּֽי־ עֲבַ֑דוּ לָ֣א שְׁמַיָּ֥א וְאַרְקָ֖א יֵאבַ֧דוּ מֵֽאַרְעָ֛א וּמִן־ תְּח֥וֹת אֵֽלֶּה׃ס שְׁמַיָּ֖א kiḏ·nāh tê·mə·rūn lə·hō·wm ’ĕ·lā·hay·yā dî- ‘ă·ḇa·ḏū lā šə·may·yā wə·’ar·qā yê·ḇa·ḏū mê·’ar·‘ā ū·min- tə·ḥō·wṯ ’êl·leh šə·may·yāWLC · 11

[The LORD] made the earth by His power; He established the world by His wisdom and stretched out the heavens by His understanding.

𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤁𐤊𐤇𐤅 𐤌𐤊𐤉𐤍 𐤕𐤁𐤋 𐤁𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤕𐤅 𐤍𐤈𐤄 𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤅

עֹשֵׂ֥ה אֶ֙רֶץ֙ בְּכֹח֔וֹ מֵכִ֥ין תֵּבֵ֖ל בְּחָכְמָת֑וֹ נָטָ֥ה שָׁמָֽיִם׃ וּבִתְבוּנָת֖וֹ ‘ō·śêh ’e·reṣ bə·ḵō·ḥōw mê·ḵîn tê·ḇêl bə·ḥā·ḵə·mā·ṯōw nā·ṭāh šā·mā·yim ū·ḇiṯ·ḇū·nā·ṯōwWLC · 12

When He thunders…, the waters in the heavens roar; He causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth. He generates the lightning with the rain and brings forth the wind from His storehouses.

𐤋𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤕𐤕𐤅 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤌𐤅𐤍 𐤍𐤔𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤒𐤑𐤄 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤁𐤓𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤌𐤈𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤑𐤀 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤌𐤀𐤑𐤓𐤕𐤉𐤅

לְק֨וֹל תִּתּ֜וֹ מַ֙יִם֙ בַּשָּׁמַ֔יִם הֲמ֥וֹן נְשִׂאִ֖ים וַיַּעֲלֶ֥ה מִקְצֵ֣ה אֶרֶץ עָשָׂ֔ה בְּרָקִ֤ים לַמָּטָר֙ וַיּ֥וֹצֵא ר֖וּחַ מֵאֹצְרֹתָֽיו׃ lə·qō·wl tit·tōw ma·yim baš·šā·ma·yim hă·mō·wn nə·śi·’îm way·ya·‘ă·leh miq·ṣêh ʾɛ·rɛṣ ‘ā·śāh bə·rā·qîm lam·mā·ṭār way·yō·w·ṣê rū·aḥ mê·’ō·ṣə·rō·ṯāwWLC · 13

Every man is senseless and devoid of knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols. For his molten images are a fraud, and [there is] no breath in them.

𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤍𐤁𐤏𐤓 𐤌𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤑𐤅𐤓𐤐 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤐𐤎𐤋 𐤊𐤉 𐤍𐤎𐤊𐤅 𐤔𐤒𐤓 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤁𐤌

כָּל־ אָדָם֙ נִבְעַ֤ר מִדַּ֔עַת כָּל־ צוֹרֵ֖ף הֹבִ֥ישׁ מִפָּ֑סֶל כִּ֛י נִסְכּ֖וֹ שֶׁ֥קֶר וְלֹא־ ר֥וּחַ בָּֽם׃ kāl- ’ā·ḏām niḇ·‘ar mid·da·‘aṯ kāl- ṣō·w·rêp̄ hō·ḇîš mip·pā·sel kî nis·kōw še·qer wə·lō- rū·aḥ bāmWLC · 14

They are worthless, a work to be mocked. In the time of their punishment they will perish.

𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤁𐤋 𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤕𐤏𐤕𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤐𐤒𐤃𐤕𐤌 𐤉𐤀𐤁𐤃𐤅

הֵ֔מָּה הֶ֣בֶל מַעֲשֵׂ֖ה תַּעְתֻּעִ֑ים בְּעֵ֥ת פְּקֻדָּתָ֖ם יֹאבֵֽדוּ׃ hêm·māh he·ḇel ma·‘ă·śêh ta‘·tu·‘îm bə·‘êṯ pə·qud·dā·ṯām yō·ḇê·ḏūWLC · 15

The Portion of Jacob is not like these, for He is the Maker of all things, and Israel [is] the tribe of His inheritance— the LORD of Hosts is His name.

𐤇𐤋𐤒 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤋𐤀 𐤊𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤉𐤅𐤑𐤓 𐤄𐤊𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤁𐤈 𐤍𐤇𐤋𐤕𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤎

חֵ֣לֶק יַעֲקֹ֗ב לֹֽא־ כְאֵ֜לֶּה כִּֽי־ ה֔וּא יוֹצֵ֤ר הַכֹּל֙ וְיִ֨שְׂרָאֵ֔ל שֵׁ֖בֶט נַֽחֲלָת֑וֹ יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת שְׁמֽוֹ׃ס ḥê·leq ya·‘ă·qōḇ lō- ḵə·’êl·leh kî- hū yō·w·ṣêr hak·kōl wə·yiś·rā·’êl šê·ḇeṭ na·ḥă·lā·ṯōw Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ šə·mōwWLC · 16

The Coming Captivity of Judah

Gather up your belongings from this land, you who live under siege.

𐤀𐤎𐤐𐤉 𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤕𐤊 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤓𐤎

אִסְפִּ֥י כִּנְעָתֵ֑ךְ מֵאֶ֖רֶץ יֹשַׁבְתִּי בַּמָּצֽוֹר׃ס ’is·pî kin·‘ā·ṯêḵ mê·’e·reṣ yō·šaḇ·tī bam·mā·ṣō·wrWLC · 17

For this is what the LORD says: “Behold, at this time I will sling out the inhabitants of the land and bring distress upon them so that they may be captured.”

𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤐𐤏𐤌 𐤒𐤅𐤋𐤏 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤄𐤑𐤓𐤅𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤉𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤅𐤎

כִּֽי־ כֹה֙ יְהוָ֔ה אָמַ֣ר הִנְנִ֥י הַזֹּ֑את בַּפַּ֣עַם קוֹלֵ֛עַ אֶת־ יוֹשְׁבֵ֥י הָאָ֖רֶץ וַהֲצֵר֥וֹתִי לָהֶ֖ם לְמַ֥עַן יִמְצָֽאוּ׃ס kî- ḵōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar hin·nî haz·zōṯ bap·pa·‘am qō·w·lê·a‘ ’eṯ- yō·wō·šə·ḇê hā·’ā·reṣ wa·hă·ṣê·rō·w·ṯî lā·hem lə·ma·‘an yim·ṣā·’ūWLC · 18

Woe to me because of my brokenness; my wound is grievous! But I said,… “This is truly my sickness, and I must bear it.”

א֥וֹי לִי֙ עַל־ שִׁבְרִ֔י מַכָּתִ֑י נַחְלָ֖ה וַאֲנִ֣י אָמַ֔רְתִּי אַ֛ךְ זֶ֥ה חֳלִ֖י וְאֶשָּׂאֶֽנּוּ׃ ’ō·w lî ‘al- šiḇ·rî mak·kā·ṯî naḥ·lāh wa·’ă·nî ’ā·mar·tî ’aḵ zeh ḥo·lî wə·’eś·śā·’en·nūWLC · 19

My tent is destroyed, and all its ropes are snapped. My sons have departed from me and are no more. I have no one left to pitch my tent or set up my curtains.

For the shepherds have become senseless; they do not seek the LORD. Therefore… they have not prospered, and all their flock is scattered.

Listen! The sound of a report is coming— a great commotion from the land to the north. It will make the cities of Judah a desolation, a haunt for jackals.

I know, O LORD, that a man’s way is not his own; no one who walks directs his own steps.

Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge You, and on the families that do not call on Your name. For they have devoured Jacob; they have consumed him and finished him off -; they have devastated his homeland.
