The Call of Jeremiah
1
[These are] the words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, one of the priests in Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin.

דִּבְרֵ֥י יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ בֶּן־ חִלְקִיָּ֑הוּ מִן־ הַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּעֲנָת֔וֹת בְּאֶ֖רֶץ בִּנְיָמִֽן׃ diḇ·rê yir·mə·yā·hū ben- ḥil·qî·yā·hū min- hak·kō·hă·nîm ’ă·šer ba·‘ă·nā·ṯō·wṯ bə·’e·reṣ bin·yā·min — WLC · 1

- The word of the LORD came to [Jeremiah]… in the thirteenth… year of the reign of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah,

אֲשֶׁ֨ר דְבַר־ יְהוָה֙ הָיָ֤ה אֵלָ֔יו בִּימֵ֛י בִּשְׁלֹשׁ־ עֶשְׂרֵ֥ה שָׁנָ֖ה לְמָלְכֽוֹ׃ יֹאשִׁיָּ֥הוּ בֶן־ אָמ֖וֹן מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֑ה ’ă·šer ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh hā·yāh ’ê·lāw bî·mê biš·lōš- ‘eś·rêh šā·nāh lə·mā·lə·ḵōw yō·šî·yā·hū ḇen- ’ā·mō·wn me·leḵ yə·hū·ḏāh — WLC · 2

and through the days of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, until… the fifth month of the eleventh… year of Zedekiah son of Josiah king of Judah, when the people of Jerusalem went into exile.

The word of the LORD came to me, saying:

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born… I set you apart [and] appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

בְּטֶ֨רֶם אֶצּוֹרְךָ בַבֶּ֙טֶן֙ יְדַעְתִּ֔יךָ וּבְטֶ֛רֶם תֵּצֵ֥א מֵרֶ֖חֶם הִקְדַּשְׁתִּ֑יךָ נְתַתִּֽיךָ׃ נָבִ֥יא לַגּוֹיִ֖ם bə·ṭe·rem ʾɛṣ·ṣō·rə·ḵå̄ ḇab·be·ṭen yə·ḏa‘·tî·ḵā ū·ḇə·ṭe·rem tê·ṣê mê·re·ḥem hiq·daš·tî·ḵā nə·ṯat·tî·ḵā nā·ḇî lag·gō·w·yim — WLC · 5

“Ah, Lord GOD,” I said, “I surely do not know how to speak, for I [am] only a child!”

אֲהָהּ֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהֹוִ֔ה וָאֹמַ֗ר הִנֵּ֥ה לֹא־ יָדַ֖עְתִּי דַּבֵּ֑ר כִּי־ אָנֹֽכִי׃פ נַ֖עַר ’ă·hāh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh wā·’ō·mar hin·nêh lō- yā·ḏa‘·tî dab·bēr kî- ’ā·nō·ḵî na·‘ar — WLC · 6

But the LORD told me: “Do not say, ‘I [am] only a child.’ For to everyone I send you, you must go -, and all that I command you, you must speak.

יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלַ֔י אַל־ תֹּאמַ֖ר אָנֹ֑כִי נַ֣עַר כִּ֠י עַֽל־ כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֤ר אֶֽשְׁלָחֲךָ֙ תֵּלֵ֔ךְ וְאֵ֛ת כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲצַוְּךָ֖ תְּדַבֵּֽר׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’ê·lay ’al- tō·mar ’ā·nō·ḵî na·‘ar kî ‘al- kāl- ’ă·šer ’eš·lā·ḥă·ḵā tê·lêḵ wə·’êṯ kāl- ’ă·šer ’ă·ṣaw·wə·ḵā tə·ḏab·bêr — WLC · 7

Do not be afraid of them, for I [am] with you to deliver you,” declares the LORD.

אַל־ תִּירָ֖א מִפְּנֵיהֶ֑ם כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֛י אִתְּךָ֥ לְהַצִּלֶ֖ךָ נְאֻם־ יְהוָֽה׃ ’al- tî·rā mip·pə·nê·hem kî- ’ă·nî ’it·tə·ḵā lə·haṣ·ṣi·le·ḵā nə·’um- Yah·weh — WLC · 8

Then the LORD reached out His hand, touched… my mouth, and said… to me: “Behold, I have put My words in your mouth.
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤏 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤁𐤐𐤉𐤊
יְהוָה֙ אֶת־ וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח יָד֔וֹ וַיַּגַּ֖ע עַל־ פִּ֑י וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֵלַ֔י הִנֵּ֛ה נָתַ֥תִּי דְבָרַ֖י בְּפִֽיךָ׃ Yah·weh ’eṯ- way·yiš·laḥ yā·ḏōw way·yag·ga‘ ‘al- pî way·yō·mer Yah·weh ’ê·lay hin·nêh nā·ṯat·tî ḏə·ḇā·ray bə·p̄î·ḵā — WLC · 9

See, I have appointed you today… over nations… and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and plant.”

רְאֵ֞ה הִפְקַדְתִּ֣יךָ׀ הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֗ה עַל־ הַגּוֹיִם֙ וְעַל־ הַמַּמְלָכ֔וֹת לִנְת֥וֹשׁ וְלִנְת֖וֹץ וּלְהַאֲבִ֣יד וְלַהֲר֑וֹס לִבְנ֖וֹת וְלִנְטֽוֹעַ׃פ rə·’êh hip̄·qaḏ·tî·ḵā hay·yō·wm haz·zeh ‘al- hag·gō·w·yim wə·‘al- ham·mam·lā·ḵō·wṯ lin·ṯō·wōš wə·lin·ṯō·wṣ ū·lə·ha·’ă·ḇîḏ wə·la·hă·rō·ws liḇ·nō·wṯ wə·lin·ṭō·w·a‘ — WLC · 10

And the word of the LORD came to me, asking, “Jeremiah, what do you see?” “I see a branch of an almond tree,” I replied.

דְבַר־ יְהוָה֙ וַיְהִ֤י אֵלַ֣י לֵאמֹ֔ר יִרְמְיָ֑הוּ מָה־ אַתָּ֥ה רֹאֶ֖ה אֲנִ֥י רֹאֶֽה׃ מַקֵּ֥ל שָׁקֵ֖ד וָאֹמַ֕ר ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr yir·mə·yā·hū māh- ’at·tāh rō·’eh ’ă·nî rō·’eh maq·qêl šā·qêḏ wā·’ō·mar — WLC · 11

“You have observed correctly,” said the LORD -, “for I am watching over My word to accomplish it.”

לִרְא֑וֹת הֵיטַ֣בְתָּ וַיֹּ֧אמֶר יְהוָ֛ה אֵלַ֖י כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֛י שֹׁקֵ֥ד עַל־ דְּבָרִ֖י לַעֲשֹׂתֽוֹ׃פ lir·’ō·wṯ hê·ṭaḇ·tā way·yō·mer Yah·weh ’ê·lay kî- ’ă·nî šō·qêḏ ‘al- də·ḇā·rî la·‘ă·śō·ṯōw — WLC · 12

Again the word of the LORD came to me, asking, “What do you see?” “I see a boiling pot,” I replied, “and it is tilting toward us from the north.”

שֵׁנִ֣ית דְבַר־ יְהוָ֤ה׀ וַיְהִ֨י אֵלַי֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר מָ֥ה אַתָּ֖ה רֹאֶ֑ה אֲנִ֣י רֹאֶ֔ה נָפ֙וּחַ֙ סִ֤יר וָאֹמַ֗ר וּפָנָ֖יו מִפְּנֵ֥י צָפֽוֹנָה׃ šê·nîṯ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr māh ’at·tāh rō·’eh ’ă·nî rō·’eh nā·p̄ū·aḥ sîr wā·’ō·mar ū·p̄ā·nāw mip·pə·nê ṣā·p̄ō·w·nāh — WLC · 13

Then the LORD said to me, “Disaster from the north will be poured out on all who live in the land.
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤌𐤑𐤐𐤅𐤍 𐤕𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑
יְהוָ֖ה וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֵלָ֑י הָרָעָ֔ה מִצָּפוֹן֙ תִּפָּתַ֣ח עַ֥ל כָּל־ יֹשְׁבֵ֖י הָאָֽרֶץ׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’ê·lāy hā·rā·‘āh miṣ·ṣā·p̄ō·wn tip·pā·ṯaḥ ‘al kāl- yō·šə·ḇê hā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 14

For… I am about to summon all the clans and kingdoms of the north,” declares the LORD. “[Their kings] will come… and set up their thrones at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem. They will attack all her surrounding… walls and all the other cities of Judah.

כִּ֣י׀ הִנְנִ֣י קֹרֵ֗א לְכָֽל־ מִשְׁפְּח֛וֹת מַמְלְכ֥וֹת צָפ֖וֹנָה נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֑ה וּבָ֡אוּ אִ֨ישׁ וְֽנָתְנוּ֩ כִּסְא֜וֹ פֶּ֣תַח׀ שַׁעֲרֵ֣י יְרוּשָׁלִַ֗ם וְעַ֤ל כָּל־ סָבִ֔יב וְעַ֖ל חוֹמֹתֶ֙יהָ֙ כָּל־ עָרֵ֥י יְהוּדָֽה׃ kî hin·nî qō·rê lə·ḵāl miš·pə·ḥō·wṯ mam·lə·ḵō·wṯ ṣā·p̄ō·w·nāh nə·’um- Yah·weh ū·ḇā·’ū ’îš wə·nā·ṯə·nū kis·’ōw pe·ṯaḥ ša·‘ă·rê yə·rū·šā·lim wə·‘al kāl- sā·ḇîḇ wə·‘al ḥō·w·mō·ṯe·hā kāl- ‘ā·rê yə·hū·ḏāh — WLC · 15

I will pronounce My judgments against them for all their wickedness, because they have forsaken Me, and they have burned incense to other gods and worshiped the works of their own hands.

וְדִבַּרְתִּ֤י מִשְׁפָּטַי֙ אוֹתָ֔ם עַ֖ל כָּל־ רָעָתָ֑ם אֲשֶׁ֣ר עֲזָב֗וּנִי וַֽיְקַטְּרוּ֙ אֲחֵרִ֔ים לֵאלֹהִ֣ים וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲו֖וּ לְמַעֲשֵׂ֥י יְדֵיהֶֽם׃ wə·ḏib·bar·tî miš·pā·ṭay ’ō·w·ṯām ‘al kāl- rā·‘ā·ṯām ’ă·šer ‘ă·zā·ḇū·nî way·qaṭ·ṭə·rū ’ă·ḥê·rîm lê·lō·hîm way·yiš·ta·ḥă·wū lə·ma·‘ă·śê yə·ḏê·hem — WLC · 16

Get yourself ready… Stand up and tell… them everything that I command you. Do not be intimidated by them, or I will terrify you before them.

וְאַתָּה֙ תֶּאְזֹ֣ר מָתְנֶ֔יךָ וְקַמְתָּ֙ וְדִבַּרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם אֵ֛ת כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָנֹכִ֖י אֲצַוֶּ֑ךָּ אַל־ תֵּחַת֙ מִפְּנֵיהֶ֔ם פֶּֽן־ אֲחִתְּךָ֖ לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃ wə·’at·tāh te’·zōr mā·ṯə·ne·ḵā wə·qam·tā wə·ḏib·bar·tā ’ă·lê·hem ’êṯ kāl- ’ă·šer ’ā·nō·ḵî ’ă·ṣaw·we·kā ’al- tê·ḥaṯ mip·pə·nê·hem pen- ’ă·ḥit·tə·ḵā lip̄·nê·hem — WLC · 17

Now behold, this day I have made you like a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls against the whole land— against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the people of the land.
