Chapter 65
Judgments and Promises
1
“I revealed Myself to those who did not ask for Me; I was found by those who did not seek Me. To a nation that did not call My name, I said, ‘Here I am! Here I am!’
𐤍𐤃𐤓𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤔𐤀𐤋𐤅 𐤍𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤋𐤀 𐤁𐤒𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤂𐤅𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤁𐤔𐤌𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉
נִדְרַ֙שְׁתִּי֙ לְל֣וֹא שָׁאָ֔לוּ נִמְצֵ֖אתִי לְלֹ֣א בִקְשֻׁ֑נִי אֶל־ גּ֖וֹי לֹֽא־ קֹרָ֥א בִשְׁמִֽי׃ אָמַ֙רְתִּי֙ הִנֵּ֣נִי הִנֵּ֔נִי niḏ·raš·tî lə·lō·w šā·’ā·lū nim·ṣê·ṯî lə·lō ḇiq·šu·nî ’el- gō·w lō- qō·rā ḇiš·mî ’ā·mar·tî hin·nê·nî hin·nê·nî — WLC · 1

All day long… I have held out My hands to an obstinate people who walk in the wrong… path, who follow their own imaginations,

כָּל־ הַיּ֖וֹם פֵּרַ֧שְׂתִּי יָדַ֛י אֶל־ סוֹרֵ֑ר עַ֣ם הַהֹלְכִים֙ לֹא־ ט֔וֹב הַדֶּ֣רֶךְ אַחַ֖ר מַחְשְׁבֹתֵיהֶֽם׃ kāl- hay·yō·wm pê·raś·tî yā·ḏay ’el- sō·w·rêr ‘am ha·hō·lə·ḵîm lō- ṭō·wḇ had·de·reḵ ’a·ḥar maḥ·šə·ḇō·ṯê·hem — WLC · 2

to a people who continually provoke Me to My face, sacrificing in the gardens and burning incense on altars of brick,
𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤄𐤌𐤊𐤏𐤉𐤎𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤆𐤁𐤇𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤂𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤌𐤒𐤈𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌
הָעָ֗ם תָּמִ֑יד הַמַּכְעִיסִ֥ים אוֹתִ֛י עַל־ פָּנַ֖י זֹֽבְחִים֙ בַּגַּנּ֔וֹת וּֽמְקַטְּרִ֖ים עַל־ הַלְּבֵנִֽים׃ hā·‘ām tā·mîḏ ham·maḵ·‘î·sîm ’ō·w·ṯî ‘al- pā·nay zō·ḇə·ḥîm bag·gan·nō·wṯ ū·mə·qaṭ·ṭə·rîm ‘al- hal·lə·ḇê·nîm — WLC · 3

sitting among the graves, spending nights in secret places, eating the meat of pigs… and polluted broth from their bowls.
𐤄𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤒𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤋𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤑𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤇𐤆𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤐𐤓𐤒 𐤐𐤂𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌
הַיֹּֽשְׁבִים֙ בַּקְּבָרִ֔ים יָלִ֑ינוּ וּבַנְּצוּרִ֖ים הָאֹֽכְלִים֙ בְּשַׂ֣ר הַחֲזִ֔יר וּפְרַק פִּגֻּלִ֖ים כְּלֵיהֶֽם׃ hay·yō·šə·ḇîm baq·qə·ḇā·rîm yā·lî·nū ū·ḇan·nə·ṣū·rîm hā·’ō·ḵə·lîm bə·śar ha·ḥă·zîr ū·p̄ə·raq pig·gu·lîm kə·lê·hem — WLC · 4

They say, ‘Keep to yourself; do not come near me, for I am holier than you!’ Such people are smoke in My nostrils, a fire that burns all day long…

הָאֹֽמְרִים֙ קְרַ֣ב אֵלֶ֔יךָ אַל־ תִּגַּשׁ־ בִּ֖י כִּ֣י קְדַשְׁתִּ֑יךָ אֵ֚לֶּה עָשָׁ֣ן בְּאַפִּ֔י אֵ֥שׁ יֹקֶ֖דֶת כָּל־ הַיּֽוֹם׃ hā·’ō·mə·rîm qə·raḇ ’ê·le·ḵā ’al- tig·gaš- bî kî qə·ḏaš·tî·ḵā ’êl·leh ‘ā·šān bə·’ap·pî ’êš yō·qe·ḏeṯ kāl- hay·yō·wm — WLC · 5

Behold, it is written before Me: I will not keep silent, but… I will repay; I will pay it back into their laps,

הִנֵּ֥ה כְתוּבָ֖ה לְפָנָ֑י לֹ֤א אֶחֱשֶׂה֙ כִּ֣י אִם־ שִׁלַּ֔מְתִּי וְשִׁלַּמְתִּ֖י עַל־ חֵיקָֽם׃ hin·nêh ḵə·ṯū·ḇāh lə·p̄ā·nāy lō ’e·ḥĕ·śeh kî ’im- šil·lam·tî wə·šil·lam·tî ‘al- ḥê·qām — WLC · 6

both for your iniquities and [for those] of your fathers,” says the LORD. “Because they burned incense on the mountains and scorned Me on the hills, I will measure into their laps full payment for their former… deeds.”

יַחְדָּו֙ עֲ֠וֺנֹתֵיכֶם וַעֲוֺנֹ֨ת אֲבוֹתֵיכֶ֤ם אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר קִטְּרוּ֙ עַל־ הֶ֣הָרִ֔ים חֵרְפ֑וּנִי וְעַל־ הַגְּבָע֖וֹת וּמַדֹּתִ֧י חֵיקָֽם׃ס רִֽאשֹׁנָ֖ה עַל פְעֻלָּתָ֛ם yaḥ·dāw ‘ă·wō·nō·ṯê·ḵem wa·‘ă·wō·nōṯ ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·ḵem ’ā·mar Yah·weh ’ă·šer qiṭ·ṭə·rū ‘al- he·hā·rîm ḥê·rə·p̄ū·nî wə·‘al- hag·gə·ḇā·‘ō·wṯ ū·mad·dō·ṯî ḥê·qām ri·šō·nāh ʿal p̄ə·‘ul·lā·ṯām — WLC · 7

This is what the LORD says: “As the new wine is found in a cluster of grapes, and men say, ‘Do not destroy it, for it contains a blessing,’ so I will act on behalf of My servants; I will not destroy them all.
𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤕𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔 𐤉𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤁𐤀𐤔𐤊𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤔𐤇𐤉𐤕𐤄𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤅 𐤁𐤓𐤊𐤄 𐤊𐤍 𐤀𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉 𐤋𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤄𐤔𐤇𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤊𐤋
כֹּ֣ה׀ יְהוָ֗ה אָמַ֣ר כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר הַתִּירוֹשׁ֙ יִמָּצֵ֤א בָּֽאֶשְׁכּ֔וֹל וְאָמַר֙ אַל־ תַּשְׁחִיתֵ֔הוּ כִּ֥י בּ֑וֹ בְרָכָ֖ה כֵּ֤ן אֶֽעֱשֶׂה֙ לְמַ֣עַן עֲבָדַ֔י לְבִלְתִּ֖י הַֽשְׁחִ֥ית הַכֹּֽל׃ kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar ka·’ă·šer hat·tî·rō·wōš yim·mā·ṣê bā·’eš·kō·wl wə·’ā·mar ’al- taš·ḥî·ṯê·hū kî bōw ḇə·rā·ḵāh kên ’e·‘ĕ·śeh lə·ma·‘an ‘ă·ḇā·ḏay lə·ḇil·tî haš·ḥîṯ hak·kōl — WLC · 8

And I will bring forth descendants from Jacob, and heirs from Judah; My elect will possess My mountains, and My servants will dwell there.
𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤑𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤆𐤓𐤏 𐤌𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤉𐤅𐤓𐤔 𐤅𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤁𐤇𐤉𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤔𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤍𐤅 𐤔𐤌𐤄
וְהוֹצֵאתִ֤י זֶ֔רַע מִֽיַּעֲקֹב֙ יוֹרֵ֣שׁ וּמִיהוּדָ֖ה בְחִירַ֔י וִירֵשׁ֣וּהָ הָרָ֑י וַעֲבָדַ֖י יִשְׁכְּנוּ־ שָֽׁמָּה׃ wə·hō·w·ṣê·ṯî ze·ra‘ mî·ya·‘ă·qōḇ yō·w·rêš ū·mî·hū·ḏāh ḇə·ḥî·ray wî·rê·šū·hā hā·rāy wa·‘ă·ḇā·ḏay yiš·kə·nū- šām·māh — WLC · 9

Sharon will become a pasture for flocks, and the Valley of Achor a resting place for herds, for My people who seek Me.
𐤄𐤔𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤍𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤀𐤍 𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤒 𐤏𐤊𐤅𐤓 𐤋𐤓𐤁𐤑 𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤋𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤃𐤓𐤔𐤅𐤍𐤉
הַשָּׁרוֹן֙ וְהָיָ֤ה לִנְוֵה־ צֹ֔אן וְעֵ֥מֶק עָכ֖וֹר לְרֵ֣בֶץ בָּקָ֑ר לְעַמִּ֖י אֲשֶׁ֥ר דְּרָשֽׁוּנִי׃ haš·šā·rō·wn wə·hā·yāh lin·wêh- ṣōn wə·‘ê·meq ‘ā·ḵō·wr lə·rê·ḇeṣ bā·qār lə·‘am·mî ’ă·šer də·rā·šū·nî — WLC · 10

But you who forsake the LORD, who forget My holy mountain, who set a table for Fortune and fill bowls of mixed wine for Destiny,
𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤏𐤆𐤁𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤔𐤊𐤇𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤉 𐤄𐤓 𐤄𐤏𐤓𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤍 𐤋𐤂𐤃 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤌𐤎𐤊 𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤉
וְאַתֶּם֙ עֹזְבֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה הַשְּׁכֵחִ֖ים אֶת־ קָדְשִׁ֑י הַ֣ר הַֽעֹרְכִ֤ים שֻׁלְחָ֔ן לַגַּד֙ וְהַֽמְמַלְאִ֖ים מִמְסָֽךְ׃ לַמְנִ֥י wə·’at·tem ‘ō·zə·ḇê Yah·weh haš·šə·ḵê·ḥîm ’eṯ- qāḏ·šî har ha·‘ō·rə·ḵîm šul·ḥān lag·gaḏ wə·ham·mal·’îm mim·sāḵ lam·nî — WLC · 11

I will destine you for the sword, and you will all kneel down to be slaughtered, because I called and you did not answer, I spoke and you did not listen; you did evil in My sight and chose that in which I did not delight.”
𐤅𐤌𐤍𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤅𐤊𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤕𐤊𐤓𐤏𐤅 𐤋𐤈𐤁𐤇 𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤍𐤉𐤕𐤌 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤄𐤓𐤏 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤇𐤓𐤕𐤌𐤐 𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤇𐤐𐤑𐤕𐤉
וּמָנִ֨יתִי אֶתְכֶ֜ם לַחֶ֗רֶב וְכֻלְּכֶם֙ תִּכְרָ֔עוּ לַטֶּ֣בַח יַ֤עַן קָרָ֙אתִי֙ וְלֹ֣א עֲנִיתֶ֔ם דִּבַּ֖רְתִּי וְלֹ֣א שְׁמַעְתֶּ֑ם וַתַּעֲשׂ֤וּ הָרַע֙ בְּעֵינַ֔י בְּחַרְתֶּֽם׃פ וּבַאֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־ חָפַ֖צְתִּי ū·mā·nî·ṯî ’eṯ·ḵem la·ḥe·reḇ wə·ḵul·lə·ḵem tiḵ·rā·‘ū laṭ·ṭe·ḇaḥ ya·‘an qā·rā·ṯî wə·lō ‘ă·nî·ṯem dib·bar·tî wə·lō šə·ma‘·tem wat·ta·‘ă·śū hā·ra‘ bə·‘ê·nay bə·ḥar·tem ū·ḇa·’ă·šer lō- ḥā·p̄aṣ·tî — WLC · 12

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD… says: “My servants will eat, but you will go hungry;… My servants will drink, but you will go thirsty;… My servants will rejoice, but you will be put to shame.

לָכֵ֞ן כֹּה־ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֗ה הִנֵּ֨ה אָמַ֣ר׀ עֲבָדַ֤י׀ יֹאכֵ֙לוּ֙ וְאַתֶּ֣ם תִּרְעָ֔בוּ הִנֵּ֧ה עֲבָדַ֛י יִשְׁתּ֖וּ וְאַתֶּ֣ם תִּצְמָ֑אוּ הִנֵּ֧ה עֲבָדַ֛י יִשְׂמָ֖חוּ וְאַתֶּ֥ם תֵּבֹֽשׁוּ׃ lā·ḵên kōh- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh hin·nêh ’ā·mar ‘ă·ḇā·ḏay yō·ḵê·lū wə·’at·tem tir·‘ā·ḇū hin·nêh ‘ă·ḇā·ḏay yiš·tū wə·’at·tem tiṣ·mā·’ū hin·nêh ‘ă·ḇā·ḏay yiś·mā·ḥū wə·’at·tem tê·ḇō·šū — WLC · 13

- My servants will shout for joy with a glad heart, but you will cry out with a heavy heart and wail with a broken spirit.

הִנֵּ֧ה עֲבָדַ֛י יָרֹ֖נּוּ מִטּ֣וּב לֵ֑ב וְאַתֶּ֤ם תִּצְעֲקוּ֙ מִכְּאֵ֣ב לֵ֔ב תְּיֵלִֽילוּ׃ וּמִשֵּׁ֥בֶר ר֖וּחַ hin·nêh ‘ă·ḇā·ḏay yā·rōn·nū miṭ·ṭūḇ lêḇ wə·’at·tem tiṣ·‘ă·qū mik·kə·’êḇ lêḇ tə·yê·lî·lū ū·miš·šê·ḇer rū·aḥ — WLC · 14

You will leave behind your name as a curse for My chosen ones, and the Lord GOD will slay you; but to His servants He will give another name.
𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤇𐤕𐤌 𐤔𐤌𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤔𐤁𐤅𐤏𐤄 𐤋𐤁𐤇𐤉𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤋𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤇𐤓 𐤔𐤌
וְהִנַּחְתֶּ֨ם שִׁמְכֶ֤ם לִשְׁבוּעָה֙ לִבְחִירַ֔י אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה וֶהֱמִיתְךָ֖ וְלַעֲבָדָ֥יו יִקְרָ֖א אַחֵֽר׃ שֵׁ֥ם wə·hin·naḥ·tem šim·ḵem liš·ḇū·‘āh liḇ·ḥî·ray ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh we·hĕ·mî·ṯə·ḵā wə·la·‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw yiq·rā ’a·ḥêr šêm — WLC · 15

Whoever invokes a blessing in the land will [do so] by the God of truth, and whoever takes an oath in the land will swear by the God of truth. For the former… troubles will be forgotten and hidden from My sight.

אֲשֶׁ֨ר הַמִּתְבָּרֵ֜ךְ בָּאָ֗רֶץ יִתְבָּרֵךְ֙ בֵּאלֹהֵ֣י אָמֵ֔ן וְהַנִּשְׁבָּ֣ע בָּאָ֔רֶץ יִשָּׁבַ֖ע בֵּאלֹהֵ֣י אָמֵ֑ן כִּ֣י הָרִ֣אשֹׁנ֔וֹת וְכִ֥י הַצָּרוֹת֙ נִשְׁכְּח֗וּ נִסְתְּר֖וּ מֵעֵינָֽי׃ ’ă·šer ham·miṯ·bā·rêḵ bā·’ā·reṣ yiṯ·bā·rêḵ bê·lō·hê ’ā·mên wə·han·niš·bā‘ bā·’ā·reṣ yiš·šā·ḇa‘ bê·lō·hê ’ā·mên kî hā·ri·šō·nō·wṯ wə·ḵî haṣ·ṣā·rō·wṯ niš·kə·ḥū nis·tə·rū mê·‘ê·nāy — WLC · 16
A New Heaven and a New Earth
17
For behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind.

I will rejoice in Jerusalem and take delight in My people. The sounds of weeping… and crying will no longer be heard in her.

No longer will a nursing infant live… but a few days, or an old man fail to live out his years. For the youth will die at a hundred years…, and he who fails [to reach] a hundred… will be considered accursed.

They will build houses and dwell in them; they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.

No longer will they build houses for others to inhabit, nor plant for others to eat. For [as is] the lifetime of a tree, so will be the days of My people, and My chosen ones will fully enjoy the work of their hands.

They will not labor in vain [or] bear children doomed to disaster; for they will be a people blessed by the LORD— [they] and their descendants with them.

The wolf and the lamb will feed together…, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, but the food of the serpent will be dust. They will neither harm nor destroy on all My holy mountain,” says the LORD.
