Chapter 6
Isaiah’s Commission
1
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted; and the train of His robe filled the temple.
𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤆𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤎𐤀 𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤀 𐤅𐤔𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤄𐤉𐤊𐤋
בִּשְׁנַת־ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ עֻזִּיָּ֔הוּ מוֹת֙ וָאֶרְאֶ֧ה אֶת־ אֲדֹנָ֛י יֹשֵׁ֥ב עַל־ כִּסֵּ֖א רָ֣ם וְנִשָּׂ֑א וְשׁוּלָ֖יו מְלֵאִ֥ים אֶת־ הַהֵיכָֽל׃ biš·naṯ- ham·me·leḵ ‘uz·zî·yā·hū mō·wṯ wā·’er·’eh ’eṯ- ’ă·ḏō·nāy yō·šêḇ ‘al- kis·sê rām wə·niś·śā wə·šū·lāw mə·lê·’îm ’eṯ- ha·hê·ḵāl — WLC · 1

Above Him stood seraphim, each having six wings With two [wings] they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.

מִמַּ֙עַל֙ ל֔וֹ עֹמְדִ֤ים׀ שְׂרָפִ֨ים לְאֶחָ֑ד שֵׁ֧שׁ כְּנָפַ֛יִם שֵׁ֥שׁ כְּנָפַ֖יִם בִּשְׁתַּ֣יִם׀ יְכַסֶּ֣ה פָנָ֗יו וּבִשְׁתַּ֛יִם יְכַסֶּ֥ה רַגְלָ֖יו וּבִשְׁתַּ֥יִם יְעוֹפֵֽף׃ mim·ma·‘al lōw ‘ō·mə·ḏîm śə·rā·p̄îm lə·’e·ḥāḏ šêš kə·nā·p̄a·yim šêš kə·nā·p̄a·yim biš·ta·yim yə·ḵas·seh p̄ā·nāw ū·ḇiš·ta·yim yə·ḵas·seh raḡ·lāw ū·ḇiš·ta·yim yə·‘ō·w·p̄êp̄ — WLC · 2

And they were calling out to one another…: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts; all the earth is full of His glory.”
𐤆𐤄 𐤅𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤆𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤒𐤃𐤅𐤔 𐤒𐤃𐤅𐤔 𐤒𐤃𐤅𐤔 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤋𐤀 𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤃𐤅
זֶ֤ה וְקָרָ֨א אֶל־ זֶה֙ וְאָמַ֔ר קָד֧וֹשׁ׀ קָד֛וֹשׁ קָד֖וֹשׁ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת כָל־ הָאָ֖רֶץ מְלֹ֥א כְּבוֹדֽוֹ׃ zeh wə·qā·rā ’el- zeh wə·’ā·mar qā·ḏō·wōš qā·ḏō·wōš qā·ḏō·wōš Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ḵāl hā·’ā·reṣ mə·lō kə·ḇō·w·ḏōw — WLC · 3

At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook, and the temple was filled with smoke.

מִקּ֖וֹל הַקּוֹרֵ֑א אַמּ֣וֹת הַסִּפִּ֔ים וַיָּנֻ֙עוּ֙ וְהַבַּ֖יִת יִמָּלֵ֥א עָשָֽׁן׃ miq·qō·wl haq·qō·w·rê ’am·mō·wṯ has·sip·pîm way·yā·nu·‘ū wə·hab·ba·yiṯ yim·mā·lê ‘ā·šān — WLC · 4

Then I said: “Woe is me, for I am ruined, because I am a man of unclean lips dwelling among a people of unclean lips…; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of Hosts.”

וָאֹמַ֞ר אֽוֹי־ לִ֣י כִֽי־ נִדְמֵ֗יתִי כִּ֣י אָנֹ֔כִי אִ֤ישׁ טְמֵֽא־ שְׂפָתַ֙יִם֙ יוֹשֵׁ֑ב וּבְתוֹךְ֙ עַם־ טְמֵ֣א שְׂפָתַ֔יִם אָנֹכִ֖י כִּ֗י אֶת־ עֵינָֽי׃ רָא֥וּ הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת wā·’ō·mar ’ō·w- lî ḵî- niḏ·mê·ṯî kî ’ā·nō·ḵî ’îš ṭə·mê- śə·p̄ā·ṯa·yim yō·wō·šêḇ ū·ḇə·ṯō·wḵ ‘am- ṭə·mê śə·p̄ā·ṯa·yim ’ā·nō·ḵî kî ’eṯ- ‘ê·nāy rā·’ū ham·me·leḵ Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ — WLC · 5

Then one of the seraphim flew to me, and in his hand was a glowing coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar.

אֶחָד֙ מִן־ הַשְּׂרָפִ֔ים וַיָּ֣עָף אֵלַ֗י וּבְיָד֖וֹ רִצְפָּ֑ה לָקַ֖ח בְּמֶ֨לְקַחַ֔יִם מֵעַ֥ל הַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃ ’e·ḥāḏ min- haś·śə·rā·p̄îm way·yā·‘āp̄ ’ê·lay ū·ḇə·yā·ḏōw riṣ·pāh lā·qaḥ bə·mel·qa·ḥa·yim mê·‘al ham·miz·bê·aḥ — WLC · 6

And with it he touched… my mouth and said: “Now that this… has touched your lips, your iniquity is removed and your sin is atoned for.”

וַיַּגַּ֣ע עַל־ פִּ֔י וַיֹּ֕אמֶר הִנֵּ֛ה זֶ֖ה עַל־ נָגַ֥ע שְׂפָתֶ֑יךָ עֲוֺנֶ֔ךָ וְסָ֣ר וְחַטָּאתְךָ֖ תְּכֻפָּֽר׃ way·yag·ga‘ ‘al- pî way·yō·mer hin·nêh zeh ‘al- nā·ḡa‘ śə·p̄ā·ṯe·ḵā ‘ă·wō·ne·ḵā wə·sār wə·ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯə·ḵā tə·ḵup·pār — WLC · 7

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying -: “Whom shall I send? Who will go for Us?” And I said: “Here am I. Send me!”

וָאֶשְׁמַ֞ע אֶת־ ק֤וֹל אֲדֹנָי֙ אֹמֵ֔ר אֶת־ מִ֥י אֶשְׁלַ֖ח וּמִ֣י יֵֽלֶךְ־ לָ֑נוּ וָאֹמַ֖ר הִנְנִ֥י שְׁלָחֵֽנִי׃ wā·’eš·ma‘ ’eṯ- qō·wl ’ă·ḏō·nāy ’ō·mêr ’eṯ- mî ’eš·laḥ ū·mî yê·leḵ- lā·nū wā·’ō·mar hin·nî šə·lā·ḥê·nî — WLC · 8

And He replied: “Go and tell this people, ‘Be ever hearing…, but never understanding; be ever seeing…, but never perceiving.’
𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤋𐤏𐤌 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤏 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤃𐤏𐤅
וַיֹּ֕אמֶר לֵ֥ךְ וְאָמַרְתָּ֖ הַזֶּ֑ה לָעָ֣ם שִׁמְע֤וּ שָׁמ֙וֹעַ֙ וְאַל־ תָּבִ֔ינוּ וּרְא֥וּ רָא֖וֹ וְאַל־ תֵּדָֽעוּ׃ way·yō·mer lêḵ wə·’ā·mar·tā haz·zeh lā·‘ām šim·‘ū šā·mō·w·a‘ wə·’al- tā·ḇî·nū ū·rə·’ū rā·’ōw wə·’al- tê·ḏā·‘ū — WLC · 9

{Make} the hearts of this people calloused; deafen their ears and close their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.
𐤋𐤁 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤊𐤁𐤃 𐤅𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤄𐤔𐤏 𐤅𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤐𐤍 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤋𐤁𐤁𐤅 𐤅𐤔𐤁 𐤅𐤓𐤐𐤀 𐤋𐤅
לֵב־ הַזֶּ֔ה הָעָ֣ם הַשְׁמֵן֙ הַכְבֵּ֖ד וְאָזְנָ֥יו הָשַׁ֑ע וְעֵינָ֣יו פֶּן־ יִרְאֶ֨ה בְעֵינָ֜יו יִשְׁמָ֗ע וּבְאָזְנָ֣יו יָבִ֛ין וּלְבָב֥וֹ וָשָׁ֖ב וְרָ֥פָא לֽוֹ׃ lêḇ- haz·zeh hā·‘ām haš·mên haḵ·bêḏ wə·’ā·zə·nāw hā·ša‘ wə·‘ê·nāw pen- yir·’eh ḇə·‘ê·nāw yiš·mā‘ ū·ḇə·’ā·zə·nāw yā·ḇîn ū·lə·ḇā·ḇōw wā·šāḇ wə·rā·p̄ā lōw — WLC · 10

Then I asked: “How long…, O Lord?” And He replied: “Until - the cities lie ruined and without inhabitant, until the houses are left unoccupied… and the land is desolate and ravaged,
𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤏𐤃 𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤏𐤃 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤌 𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤀𐤅 𐤌𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤁 𐤅𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤕𐤔𐤀𐤄 𐤔𐤌𐤌𐤄
וָאֹמַ֕ר עַד־ מָתַ֖י אֲדֹנָ֑י וַיֹּ֡אמֶר עַ֣ד אֲשֶׁר֩ אִם־ עָרִ֜ים שָׁא֨וּ מֵאֵ֣ין יוֹשֵׁ֗ב וּבָתִּים֙ מֵאֵ֣ין אָדָ֔ם וְהָאֲדָמָ֖ה תִּשָּׁאֶ֥ה שְׁמָמָֽה׃ wā·’ō·mar ‘aḏ- mā·ṯay ’ă·ḏō·nāy way·yō·mer ‘aḏ ’ă·šer ’im- ‘ā·rîm šā·’ū mê·’ên yō·wō·šêḇ ū·ḇāt·tîm mê·’ên ’ā·ḏām wə·hā·’ă·ḏā·māh tiš·šā·’eh šə·mā·māh — WLC · 11

until the LORD has driven men far away and the land is utterly forsaken…
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤓𐤇𐤒 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤆𐤅𐤁𐤄 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤁
יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־ הָאָדָ֑ם וְרִחַ֥ק הָאָֽרֶץ׃ וְרַבָּ֥ה הָעֲזוּבָ֖ה בְּקֶ֥רֶב Yah·weh ’eṯ- hā·’ā·ḏām wə·ri·ḥaq hā·’ā·reṣ wə·rab·bāh hā·‘ă·zū·ḇāh bə·qe·reḇ — WLC · 12

And though a tenth [remains] in [the land], it will be burned again. As the terebinth and oak leave stumps when felled, so the holy seed will be a stump [in the land].”

וְע֥וֹד עֲשִׂ֣רִיָּ֔ה בָּהּ֙ וְהָיְתָ֣ה לְבָעֵ֑ר וְשָׁ֖בָה כָּאֵלָ֣ה וְכָאַלּ֗וֹן אֲשֶׁ֤ר מַצֶּ֣בֶת בָּ֔ם בְּשַׁלֶּ֙כֶת֙ קֹ֖דֶשׁ זֶ֥רַע מַצַּבְתָּֽהּ׃פ wə·‘ō·wḏ ‘ă·śi·rî·yāh bāh wə·hā·yə·ṯāh lə·ḇā·‘êr wə·šā·ḇāh kā·’ê·lāh wə·ḵā·’al·lō·wn ’ă·šer maṣ·ṣe·ḇeṯ bām bə·šal·le·ḵeṯ qō·ḏeš ze·ra‘ maṣ·ṣaḇ·tāh — WLC · 13
