Chapter 59
Sin Separates Us from God
1
Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save, nor His ear… too dull to hear.

הֵ֛ן יַד־ יְהוָ֖ה לֹֽא־ קָצְרָ֥ה מֵֽהוֹשִׁ֑יעַ אָזְנ֖וֹ וְלֹא־ כָבְדָ֥ה מִשְּׁמֽוֹעַ׃ hên yaḏ- Yah·weh lō- qā·ṣə·rāh mê·hō·wō·šî·a‘ ’ā·zə·nōw wə·lō- ḵā·ḇə·ḏāh miš·šə·mō·w·a‘ — WLC · 1

But… your iniquities… have built barriers between you… and your God, and your sins have hidden [His] face from you, so that He does not hear.

כִּ֤י אִם־ עֲוֺנֹֽתֵיכֶם֙ הָי֣וּ מַבְדִּלִ֔ים בֵּינֵכֶ֕ם לְבֵ֖ין אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֑ם וְחַטֹּֽאותֵיכֶ֗ם הִסְתִּ֧ירוּ פָנִ֛ים מִכֶּ֖ם מִשְּׁמֽוֹעַ׃ kî ’im- ‘ă·wō·nō·ṯê·ḵem hā·yū maḇ·di·lîm bê·nê·ḵem lə·ḇên ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem wə·ḥaṭ·ṭō·w·ṯê·ḵem his·tî·rū p̄ā·nîm mik·kem miš·šə·mō·w·a‘ — WLC · 2

For your hands are stained with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, and your tongue mutters injustice.

כִּ֤י כַפֵּיכֶם֙ נְגֹאֲל֣וּ בַדָּ֔ם וְאֶצְבְּעוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם בֶּֽעָוֺ֑ן שִׂפְתֽוֹתֵיכֶם֙ דִּבְּרוּ־ שֶׁ֔קֶר לְשׁוֹנְכֶ֖ם תֶהְגֶּֽה׃ עַוְלָ֥ה kî ḵap·pê·ḵem nə·ḡō·’ă·lū ḇad·dām wə·’eṣ·bə·‘ō·w·ṯê·ḵem be·‘ā·wōn śip̄·ṯō·w·ṯê·ḵem dib·bə·rū- še·qer lə·šō·wn·ḵem ṯeh·geh ‘aw·lāh — WLC · 3

No one calls for justice; no one pleads his case honestly. They rely on empty [pleas]; they tell lies; they conceive mischief and give birth to iniquity.
𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤁𐤑𐤃𐤒 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤍𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤁𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤈𐤅𐤇 𐤏𐤋 𐤕𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤔𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤓𐤅 𐤏𐤌𐤋 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤃 𐤀𐤅𐤍
אֵין־ קֹרֵ֣א בְצֶ֔דֶק וְאֵ֥ין נִשְׁפָּ֖ט בֶּאֱמוּנָ֑ה בָּט֤וֹחַ עַל־ תֹּ֙הוּ֙ וְדַבֶּר־ שָׁ֔וְא הָר֥וֹ עָמָ֖ל וְהוֹלֵ֥יד אָֽוֶן׃ ’ên- qō·rê ḇə·ṣe·ḏeq wə·’ên niš·pāṭ be·’ĕ·mū·nāh bā·ṭō·w·aḥ ‘al- tō·hū wə·ḏab·ber- šāw hā·rōw ‘ā·māl wə·hō·w·lêḏ ’ā·wen — WLC · 4

They hatch the eggs of vipers and weave a spider’s web. Whoever eats their eggs will die; crack one open, and a viper is hatched.

בִּקֵּ֔עוּ בֵּיצֵ֤י צִפְעוֹנִי֙ יֶאֱרֹ֑גוּ עַכָּבִ֖ישׁ וְקוּרֵ֥י הָאֹכֵ֤ל מִבֵּֽיצֵיהֶם֙ יָמ֔וּת וְהַזּוּרֶ֖ה אֶפְעֶֽה׃ תִּבָּקַ֥ע biq·qê·‘ū bê·ṣê ṣip̄·‘ō·w·nî ye·’ĕ·rō·ḡū ‘ak·kā·ḇîš wə·qū·rê hā·’ō·ḵêl mib·bê·ṣê·hem yā·mūṯ wə·haz·zū·reh ’ep̄·‘eh tib·bā·qa‘ — WLC · 5

Their cobwebs cannot be made into clothing, and they cannot cover themselves with their works. Their deeds are sinful deeds, and acts of violence are in their hands.

קֽוּרֵיהֶם֙ לֹא־ יִהְי֣וּ לְבֶ֔גֶד וְלֹ֥א יִתְכַּסּ֖וּ בְּמַֽעֲשֵׂיהֶ֑ם מַֽעֲשֵׂיהֶם֙ אָ֔וֶן מַֽעֲשֵׂי־ וּפֹ֥עַל חָמָ֖ס בְּכַפֵּיהֶֽם׃ qū·rê·hem lō- yih·yū lə·ḇe·ḡeḏ wə·lō yiṯ·kas·sū bə·ma·‘ă·śê·hem ma·‘ă·śê·hem ’ā·wen ma·‘ă·śê- ū·p̄ō·‘al ḥā·mās bə·ḵap·pê·hem — WLC · 6

Their feet run to evil; they are swift to shed innocent blood. Their thoughts are sinful thoughts; ruin and destruction lie in their wake.

רַגְלֵיהֶם֙ יָרֻ֔צוּ לָרַ֣ע וִֽימַהֲר֔וּ לִשְׁפֹּ֖ךְ נָקִ֑י דָּ֣ם מַחְשְׁבֽוֹתֵיהֶם֙ אָ֔וֶן מַחְשְׁב֣וֹת שֹׁ֥ד וָשֶׁ֖בֶר בִּמְסִלּוֹתָֽם׃ raḡ·lê·hem yā·ru·ṣū lā·ra‘ wî·ma·hă·rū liš·pōḵ nā·qî dām maḥ·šə·ḇō·w·ṯê·hem ’ā·wen maḥ·šə·ḇō·wṯ šōḏ wā·še·ḇer bim·sil·lō·w·ṯām — WLC · 7

The way of peace they have not known, and there is no justice in their tracks. They have turned them into crooked paths; no one… who treads on them will know peace.

דֶּ֤רֶךְ שָׁלוֹם֙ לֹ֣א יָדָ֔עוּ וְאֵ֥ין מִשְׁפָּ֖ט בְּמַעְגְּלוֹתָ֑ם לָהֶ֔ם עִקְּשׁ֣וּ נְתִיבֽוֹתֵיהֶם֙ כֹּ֚ל לֹ֥א דֹּרֵ֣ךְ בָּ֔הּ יָדַ֖ע שָׁלֽוֹם׃ de·reḵ šā·lō·wm lō yā·ḏā·‘ū wə·’ên miš·pāṭ bə·ma‘·gə·lō·w·ṯām lā·hem ‘iq·qə·šū nə·ṯî·ḇō·w·ṯê·hem kōl lō dō·rêḵ bāh yā·ḏa‘ šā·lō·wm — WLC · 8

Therefore… justice is far from us, and righteousness does not reach us. We hope for light, but there is darkness; for brightness, [but] we walk in gloom.

עַל־ כֵּ֗ן מִשְׁפָּט֙ רָחַ֤ק מִמֶּ֔נּוּ צְדָקָ֑ה וְלֹ֥א תַשִּׂיגֵ֖נוּ נְקַוֶּ֤ה לָאוֹר֙ וְהִנֵּה־ חֹ֔שֶׁךְ לִנְגֹה֖וֹת נְהַלֵּֽךְ׃ בָּאֲפֵל֥וֹת ‘al- kên miš·pāṭ rā·ḥaq mim·men·nū ṣə·ḏā·qāh wə·lō ṯaś·śî·ḡê·nū nə·qaw·weh lā·’ō·wr wə·hin·nêh- ḥō·šeḵ lin·ḡō·hō·wṯ nə·hal·lêḵ bā·’ă·p̄ê·lō·wṯ — WLC · 9

Like the blind, we feel our way along the wall, groping like those without eyes. We stumble at midday as in the twilight; among the vigorous we are like the dead.

כַֽעִוְרִים֙ נְגַֽשְׁשָׁ֤ה קִ֔יר נְגַשֵּׁ֑שָׁה וּכְאֵ֥ין עֵינַ֖יִם כָּשַׁ֤לְנוּ בַֽצָּהֳרַ֙יִם֙ כַּנֶּ֔שֶׁף בָּאַשְׁמַנִּ֖ים כַּמֵּתִֽים׃ ḵa·‘iw·rîm nə·ḡaš·šāh qîr nə·ḡaš·šê·šāh ū·ḵə·’ên ‘ê·na·yim kā·šal·nū ḇaṣ·ṣā·ho·ra·yim kan·ne·šep̄ bā·’aš·man·nîm kam·mê·ṯîm — WLC · 10

We all growl like bears and moan… like doves. We hope for justice, but [find] none, for salvation, but it is far from us.

כֻּלָּ֔נוּ נֶהֱמֶ֤ה כַדֻּבִּים֙ הָגֹ֣ה נֶהְגֶּ֑ה וְכַיּוֹנִ֖ים נְקַוֶּ֤ה לַמִּשְׁפָּט֙ וָאַ֔יִן לִֽישׁוּעָ֖ה רָחֲקָ֥ה מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ kul·lā·nū ne·hĕ·meh ḵad·dub·bîm hā·ḡōh neh·geh wə·ḵay·yō·w·nîm nə·qaw·weh lam·miš·pāṭ wā·’a·yin lî·šū·‘āh rā·ḥă·qāh mim·men·nū — WLC · 11

For our transgressions are multiplied before You, and our sins testify against us. Our transgressions are indeed with us, and we know our iniquities:

כִּֽי־ פְשָׁעֵ֙ינוּ֙ רַבּ֤וּ נֶגְדֶּ֔ךָ וְחַטֹּאותֵ֖ינוּ עָ֣נְתָה בָּ֑נוּ פְשָׁעֵ֣ינוּ כִּֽי־ אִתָּ֔נוּ יְדַֽעֲנֽוּם׃ וַעֲוֺנֹתֵ֖ינוּ kî- p̄ə·šā·‘ê·nū rab·bū neḡ·de·ḵā wə·ḥaṭ·ṭō·w·ṯê·nū ‘ā·nə·ṯāh bā·nū p̄ə·šā·‘ê·nū kî- ’it·tā·nū yə·ḏa·‘ă·nūm wa·‘ă·wō·nō·ṯê·nū — WLC · 12

rebelling and denying the LORD, turning away from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering lies from the heart.
𐤐𐤔𐤏 𐤅𐤊𐤇𐤔 𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤍𐤎𐤅𐤂 𐤌𐤀𐤇𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤒 𐤅𐤎𐤓𐤄 𐤄𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤂𐤅 𐤔𐤒𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤌𐤋𐤁
פָּשֹׁ֤עַ וְכַחֵשׁ֙ בַּֽיהוָ֔ה וְנָס֖וֹג מֵאַחַ֣ר אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ דַּבֶּר־ עֹ֣שֶׁק וְסָרָ֔ה הֹר֧וֹ וְהֹג֛וֹ שָֽׁקֶר׃ דִּבְרֵי־ מִלֵּ֖ב pā·šō·a‘ wə·ḵa·ḥêš Yah·weh wə·nā·sō·wḡ mê·’a·ḥar ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū dab·ber- ‘ō·šeq wə·sā·rāh hō·rōw wə·hō·ḡōw šā·qer diḇ·rê- mil·lêḇ — WLC · 13

So justice is turned away…, and righteousness stands at a distance. For truth has stumbled in the public square, and honesty cannot… enter.

מִשְׁפָּ֔ט וְהֻסַּ֤ג אָחוֹר֙ וּצְדָקָ֖ה תַּעֲמֹ֑ד מֵרָח֣וֹק כִּֽי־ אֱמֶ֔ת כָשְׁלָ֤ה בָֽרְחוֹב֙ וּנְכֹחָ֖ה לֹא־ תוּכַ֥ל לָבֽוֹא׃ miš·pāṭ wə·hus·saḡ ’ā·ḥō·wr ū·ṣə·ḏā·qāh ta·‘ă·mōḏ mê·rā·ḥō·wq kî- ’ĕ·meṯ ḵā·šə·lāh ḇā·rə·ḥō·wḇ ū·nə·ḵō·ḥāh lō- ṯū·ḵal lā·ḇō·w — WLC · 14

Truth is missing, and whoever turns from evil becomes prey. The LORD looked and was displeased… that there was no justice.
𐤄𐤀𐤌𐤕 𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤉 𐤍𐤏𐤃𐤓𐤕 𐤅𐤎𐤓 𐤌𐤓𐤏 𐤌𐤔𐤕𐤅𐤋𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤏 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈
הָֽאֱמֶת֙ וַתְּהִ֤י נֶעְדֶּ֔רֶת וְסָ֥ר מֵרָ֖ע מִשְׁתּוֹלֵ֑ל יְהוָ֛ה וַיַּ֧רְא וַיֵּ֥רַע בְּעֵינָ֖יו כִּֽי־ אֵ֥ין מִשְׁפָּֽט׃ hā·’ĕ·meṯ wat·tə·hî ne‘·de·reṯ wə·sār mê·rā‘ miš·tō·w·lêl Yah·weh way·yar way·yê·ra‘ bə·‘ê·nāw kî- ’ên miš·pāṭ — WLC · 15

He saw that there was no man; He was amazed that there was no one to intercede. So His own arm brought salvation and His own righteousness… sustained Him.

וַיַּרְא֙ כִּֽי־ אֵ֣ין אִ֔ישׁ וַיִּשְׁתּוֹמֵ֖ם כִּ֣י אֵ֣ין מַפְגִּ֑יעַ זְרֹע֔וֹ וַתּ֤וֹשַֽׁע לוֹ֙ וְצִדְקָת֖וֹ הִ֥יא סְמָכָֽתְהוּ׃ way·yar kî- ’ên ’îš way·yiš·tō·w·mêm kî ’ên map̄·gî·a‘ zə·rō·‘ōw wat·tō·wō·ša‘ lōw wə·ṣiḏ·qā·ṯōw hî sə·mā·ḵā·ṯə·hū — WLC · 16

He put on righteousness like a breastplate, and the helmet of salvation on His head; He put on garments… of vengeance and wrapped Himself in a cloak of zeal.

וַיִּלְבַּ֤שׁ צְדָקָה֙ כַּשִּׁרְיָ֔ן וְכ֥וֹבַע יְשׁוּעָ֖ה בְּרֹאשׁ֑וֹ וַיִּלְבַּ֞שׁ בִּגְדֵ֤י תִּלְבֹּ֔שֶׁת נָקָם֙ וַיַּ֥עַט כַּמְעִ֖יל קִנְאָֽה׃ way·yil·baš ṣə·ḏā·qāh kaš·šir·yān wə·ḵō·w·ḇa‘ yə·šū·‘āh bə·rō·šōw way·yil·baš biḡ·ḏê til·bō·šeṯ nā·qām way·ya·‘aṭ kam·‘îl qin·’āh — WLC · 17
The Covenant of the Redeemer

So He will repay according to their deeds -: fury to His enemies, retribution to His foes, and recompense to the islands.

So shall they fear the name of the LORD where the sun sets… -, and His glory where [it] rises -. For He will come like a raging flood, driven by the breath of the LORD.

“As for Me, this is My covenant with them,” says the LORD. “My Spirit [will not depart] from you, and My words that I have put in your mouth will not depart from your mouth or from the mouths of your children [and] vvv grandchildren, from now on and forevermore,” says the LORD.
