True Fasts and Sabbaths

“Cry aloud, do not hold back! Raise your voice like a ram’s horn. Declare to My people their transgression and to the house of Jacob their sins.
𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤁𐤂𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤇𐤔𐤊 𐤄𐤓𐤌 𐤒𐤅𐤋𐤊 𐤊𐤔𐤅𐤐𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤂𐤃 𐤋𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤐𐤔𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕𐤌
קְרָ֤א בְגָרוֹן֙ אַל־ תַּחְשֹׂ֔ךְ הָרֵ֣ם קוֹלֶ֑ךָ כַּשּׁוֹפָ֖ר וְהַגֵּ֤ד לְעַמִּי֙ פִּשְׁעָ֔ם וּלְבֵ֥ית יַעֲקֹ֖ב חַטֹּאתָֽם׃ qə·rā ḇə·ḡā·rō·wn ’al- taḥ·śōḵ hā·rêm qō·w·le·ḵā kaš·šō·w·p̄ār wə·hag·gêḏ lə·‘am·mî piš·‘ām ū·lə·ḇêṯ ya·‘ă·qōḇ ḥaṭ·ṭō·ṯām — WLC · 1

For day after day they seek Me and delight to know My ways, like a nation that does what is right and does not forsake the justice of their God. They ask Me for righteous judgments; they delight in the nearness of God.”

וְאוֹתִ֗י י֥וֹם יוֹם֙ יִדְרֹשׁ֔וּן יֶחְפָּצ֑וּן וְדַ֥עַת דְּרָכַ֖י כְּג֞וֹי אֲשֶׁר־ עָשָׂ֗ה צְדָקָ֣ה לֹ֣א עָזָ֔ב וּמִשְׁפַּ֤ט אֱלֹהָיו֙ יִשְׁאָל֙וּנִי֙ צֶ֔דֶק מִשְׁפְּטֵי־ יֶחְפָּצֽוּן׃ קִרְבַ֥ת אֱלֹהִ֖ים wə·’ō·w·ṯî yō·wm yō·wm yiḏ·rō·šūn yeḥ·pā·ṣūn wə·ḏa·‘aṯ də·rā·ḵay kə·ḡō·w ’ă·šer- ‘ā·śāh ṣə·ḏā·qāh lō ‘ā·zāḇ ū·miš·paṭ ’ĕ·lō·hāw yiš·’ā·lū·nî ṣe·ḏeq miš·pə·ṭê- yeḥ·pā·ṣūn qir·ḇaṯ ’ĕ·lō·hîm — WLC · 2

“Why have we fasted, and You have not seen? [Why] have we humbled ourselves, and You have not noticed?” “Behold, on the day of your fast, you do as you please, and you oppress all your workers.

לָ֤מָּה צַּ֙מְנוּ֙ וְלֹ֣א רָאִ֔יתָ עִנִּ֥ינוּ נַפְשֵׁ֖נוּ וְלֹ֣א תֵדָ֑ע הֵ֣ן בְּי֤וֹם צֹֽמְכֶם֙ תִּמְצְאוּ־ חֵ֔פֶץ תִּנְגֹּֽשׂוּ׃ וְכָל־ עַצְּבֵיכֶ֖ם lām·māh ṣam·nū wə·lō rā·’î·ṯā ‘in·nî·nū nap̄·šê·nū wə·lō ṯê·ḏā‘ hên bə·yō·wm ṣō·mə·ḵem tim·ṣə·’ū- ḥê·p̄eṣ tin·gō·śū wə·ḵāl ‘aṣ·ṣə·ḇê·ḵem — WLC · 3

- You fast with contention and strife to strike viciously with your fist. You cannot fast as you do today and have your voice be heard on high.

הֵ֣ן תָּצ֔וּמוּ לְרִ֤יב וּמַצָּה֙ וּלְהַכּ֖וֹת רֶ֑שַׁע בְּאֶגְרֹ֣ף לֹא־ תָצ֣וּמוּ כַיּ֔וֹם קוֹלְכֶֽם׃ לְהַשְׁמִ֥יעַ בַּמָּר֖וֹם hên tā·ṣū·mū lə·rîḇ ū·maṣ·ṣāh ū·lə·hak·kō·wṯ re·ša‘ bə·’eḡ·rōp̄ lō- ṯā·ṣū·mū ḵay·yō·wm qō·wl·ḵem lə·haš·mî·a‘ bam·mā·rō·wm — WLC · 4

Is this the fast I have chosen: a day for a man to deny himself, to bow his head like a reed, and to spread out sackcloth and ashes? Will you call this a fast and a day acceptable to the LORD?

יִֽהְיֶה֙ הֲכָזֶ֗ה צ֣וֹם אֶבְחָרֵ֔הוּ י֛וֹם אָדָ֖ם עַנּ֥וֹת נַפְשׁ֑וֹ הֲלָכֹ֨ף רֹאשׁ֗וֹ כְּאַגְמֹ֜ן יַצִּ֔יעַ וְשַׂ֤ק וָאֵ֙פֶר֙ תִּקְרָא־ הֲלָזֶה֙ צ֔וֹם וְי֥וֹם רָצ֖וֹן לַיהוָֽה׃ yih·yeh hă·ḵā·zeh ṣō·wm ’eḇ·ḥā·rê·hū yō·wm ’ā·ḏām ‘an·nō·wṯ nap̄·šōw hă·lā·ḵōp̄ rō·šōw kə·’aḡ·mōn yaṣ·ṣî·a‘ wə·śaq wā·’ê·p̄er tiq·rā- hă·lā·zeh ṣō·wm wə·yō·wm rā·ṣō·wn Yah·weh — WLC · 5

Isn’t this the fast that I have chosen: to break the chains of wickedness, to untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and tear off every yoke?

הֲל֣וֹא זֶה֮ צ֣וֹם אֶבְחָרֵהוּ֒ פַּתֵּ֙חַ֙ חַרְצֻבּ֣וֹת רֶ֔שַׁע הַתֵּ֖ר אֲגֻדּ֣וֹת מוֹטָ֑ה וְשַׁלַּ֤ח רְצוּצִים֙ חָפְשִׁ֔ים תְּנַתֵּֽקוּ׃ וְכָל־ מוֹטָ֖ה hă·lō·w zeh ṣō·wm ’eḇ·ḥā·rê·hū pat·tê·aḥ ḥar·ṣub·bō·wṯ re·ša‘ hat·têr ’ă·ḡud·dō·wṯ mō·w·ṭāh wə·šal·laḥ rə·ṣū·ṣîm ḥā·p̄ə·šîm tə·nat·tê·qū wə·ḵāl mō·w·ṭāh — WLC · 6

Isn’t [it] to share your bread with the hungry, to bring the poor and homeless into your home, to clothe the naked when you see him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

הֲל֨וֹא פָרֹ֤ס לַחְמֶ֔ךָ לָֽרָעֵב֙ וַעֲנִיִּ֥ים מְרוּדִ֖ים תָּ֣בִיא בָ֑יִת וְכִסִּית֔וֹ עָרֹם֙ כִּֽי־ תִרְאֶ֤ה לֹ֥א תִתְעַלָּֽם׃ וּמִבְּשָׂרְךָ֖ hă·lō·w p̄ā·rōs laḥ·me·ḵā lā·rā·‘êḇ wa·‘ă·nî·yîm mə·rū·ḏîm tā·ḇî ḇā·yiṯ wə·ḵis·sî·ṯōw ‘ā·rōm kî- ṯir·’eh lō ṯiṯ·‘al·lām ū·mib·bə·śā·rə·ḵā — WLC · 7

Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will come quickly. Your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.

אָ֣ז אוֹרֶ֔ךָ יִבָּקַ֤ע כַּשַּׁ֙חַר֙ וַאֲרֻכָתְךָ֖ תִצְמָ֑ח מְהֵרָ֣ה צִדְקֶ֔ךָ וְהָלַ֤ךְ לְפָנֶ֙יךָ֙ כְּב֥וֹד יְהוָ֖ה יַאַסְפֶֽךָ׃ ’āz ’ō·w·re·ḵā yib·bā·qa‘ kaš·ša·ḥar wa·’ă·ru·ḵā·ṯə·ḵā ṯiṣ·māḥ mə·hê·rāh ṣiḏ·qe·ḵā wə·hā·laḵ lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā kə·ḇō·wḏ Yah·weh ya·’as·p̄e·ḵā — WLC · 8

Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry out, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’ If you remove the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the finger and malicious talk,
𐤀𐤆 𐤕𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤏𐤍𐤄 𐤕𐤔𐤅𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤌 𐤕𐤎𐤉𐤓 𐤌𐤅𐤈𐤄 𐤌𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤊 𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤀𐤑𐤁𐤏 𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤓
אָ֤ז תִּקְרָא֙ וַיהוָ֣ה יַעֲנֶ֔ה תְּשַׁוַּ֖ע וְיֹאמַ֣ר הִנֵּ֑נִי אִם־ תָּסִ֤יר מוֹטָ֔ה מִתּֽוֹכְךָ֙ שְׁלַ֥ח אֶצְבַּ֖ע אָֽוֶן׃ וְדַבֶּר־ ’āz tiq·rā Yah·weh ya·‘ă·neh tə·šaw·wa‘ wə·yō·mar hin·nê·nî ’im- tā·sîr mō·w·ṭāh mit·tō·wḵ·ḵā šə·laḥ ’eṣ·ba‘ ’ā·wen wə·ḏab·ber- — WLC · 9

and if you give yourself to the hungry and satisfy the afflicted soul, then your light will go forth in the darkness, and your night will be like noonday.

וְתָפֵ֤ק נַפְשֶׁ֔ךָ לָֽרָעֵב֙ תַּשְׂבִּ֑יעַ נַעֲנָ֖ה וְנֶ֥פֶשׁ אוֹרֶ֔ךָ וְזָרַ֤ח בַּחֹ֙שֶׁךְ֙ וַאֲפֵלָתְךָ֖ כַּֽצָּהֳרָֽיִם׃ wə·ṯā·p̄êq nap̄·še·ḵā lā·rā·‘êḇ taś·bî·a‘ na·‘ă·nāh wə·ne·p̄eš ’ō·w·re·ḵā wə·zā·raḥ ba·ḥō·šeḵ wa·’ă·p̄ê·lā·ṯə·ḵā kaṣ·ṣā·ho·rā·yim — WLC · 10

The LORD will always guide you; He will satisfy you in a sun-scorched land and strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring… whose waters never fail.

יְהוָה֮ תָּמִיד֒ וְנָחֲךָ֣ וְהִשְׂבִּ֤יעַ נַפְשֶׁ֔ךָ בְּצַחְצָחוֹת֙ יַחֲלִ֑יץ וְעַצְמֹתֶ֖יךָ וְהָיִ֙יתָ֙ רָוֶ֔ה כְּגַ֣ן וּכְמוֹצָ֣א מַ֔יִם אֲשֶׁ֥ר מֵימָֽיו׃ לֹא־ יְכַזְּב֖וּ Yah·weh tā·mîḏ wə·nā·ḥă·ḵā wə·hiś·bî·a‘ nap̄·še·ḵā bə·ṣaḥ·ṣā·ḥō·wṯ ya·ḥă·lîṣ wə·‘aṣ·mō·ṯe·ḵā wə·hā·yî·ṯā rā·weh kə·ḡan ū·ḵə·mō·w·ṣā ma·yim ’ă·šer mê·māw lō- yə·ḵaz·zə·ḇū — WLC · 11

Your people will rebuild the ancient… ruins; you will restore the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of the Breach, Restorer of the Streets of Dwelling.

מִמְּךָ֙ וּבָנ֤וּ עוֹלָ֔ם מוֹסְדֵ֥י חָרְב֣וֹת תְּקוֹמֵ֑ם דוֹר־ וָד֖וֹר וְקֹרָ֤א לְךָ֙ גֹּדֵ֣ר פֶּ֔רֶץ מְשֹׁבֵ֥ב נְתִיב֖וֹת לָשָֽׁבֶת׃ mim·mə·ḵā ū·ḇā·nū ‘ō·w·lām mō·ws·ḏê ḥā·rə·ḇō·wṯ tə·qō·w·mêm ḏō·wr- wā·ḏō·wr wə·qō·rā lə·ḵā gō·ḏêr pe·reṣ mə·šō·ḇêḇ nə·ṯî·ḇō·wṯ lā·šā·ḇeṯ — WLC · 12

If you turn your foot from [breaking] the Sabbath, from doing as you please on My holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight, and the LORD’s holy [day] honorable, if you honor it by not going your own way or seeking your own pleasure or speaking idle words,
𐤀𐤌 𐤕𐤔𐤉𐤁 𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤔𐤁𐤕 𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤇𐤐𐤑𐤉𐤊 𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤔𐤁𐤕 𐤏𐤍𐤂 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤒𐤃𐤅𐤔 𐤌𐤊𐤁𐤃 𐤅𐤊𐤁𐤃𐤕𐤅 𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤀 𐤇𐤐𐤑𐤊 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓
אִם־ תָּשִׁ֤יב רַגְלֶ֔ךָ מִשַּׁבָּת֙ עֲשׂ֥וֹת חֲפָצֶ֖יךָ קָדְשִׁ֑י בְּי֣וֹם וְקָרָ֨אתָ לַשַּׁבָּ֜ת עֹ֗נֶג יְהוָה֙ לִקְד֤וֹשׁ מְכֻבָּ֔ד וְכִבַּדְתּוֹ֙ מֵעֲשׂ֣וֹת דְּרָכֶ֔יךָ מִמְּצ֥וֹא חֶפְצְךָ֖ וְדַבֵּ֥ר דָּבָֽר׃ ’im- tā·šîḇ raḡ·le·ḵā miš·šab·bāṯ ‘ă·śō·wṯ ḥă·p̄ā·ṣe·ḵā qāḏ·šî bə·yō·wm wə·qā·rā·ṯā laš·šab·bāṯ ‘ō·neḡ Yah·weh liq·ḏō·wōš mə·ḵub·bāḏ wə·ḵib·baḏ·tōw mê·‘ă·śō·wṯ də·rā·ḵe·ḵā mim·mə·ṣō·w ḥep̄·ṣə·ḵā wə·ḏab·bêr dā·ḇār — WLC · 13

then you will delight yourself in the LORD, and I will make you ride on the heights of the land and feed you with the heritage of your father Jacob.” For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.

אָ֗ז תִּתְעַנַּג֙ עַל־ יְהוָ֔ה וְהִרְכַּבְתִּ֖יךָ עַל־ בָּ֣מֳותֵי אָ֑רֶץ וְהַאֲכַלְתִּ֗יךָ נַחֲלַת֙ אָבִ֔יךָ יַעֲקֹ֣ב כִּ֛י פִּ֥י יְהוָ֖ה דִּבֵּֽר׃ס ’āz tiṯ·‘an·naḡ ‘al- Yah·weh wə·hir·kaḇ·tî·ḵā ‘al- bå̄·mo·w·ṯē ’ā·reṣ wə·ha·’ă·ḵal·tî·ḵā na·ḥă·laṯ ’ā·ḇî·ḵā ya·‘ă·qōḇ kî pî Yah·weh dib·bêr — WLC · 14
