Chapter 51
Salvation for Zion
1
“Listen to Me, you who pursue righteousness, you who seek the LORD: Look to the rock from which you were cut, and to the quarry… from which you were hewn.
𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤓𐤃𐤐𐤉 𐤑𐤃𐤒 𐤌𐤁𐤒𐤔𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤈𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤑𐤅𐤓 𐤇𐤑𐤁𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤒𐤁𐤕 𐤁𐤅𐤓 𐤍𐤒𐤓𐤕𐤌
שִׁמְע֥וּ אֵלַ֛י רֹ֥דְפֵי צֶ֖דֶק מְבַקְשֵׁ֣י יְהוָ֑ה הַבִּ֙יטוּ֙ אֶל־ צ֣וּר חֻצַּבְתֶּ֔ם וְאֶל־ מַקֶּ֥בֶת בּ֖וֹר נֻקַּרְתֶּֽם׃ šim·‘ū ’ê·lay rō·ḏə·p̄ê ṣe·ḏeq mə·ḇaq·šê Yah·weh hab·bî·ṭū ’el- ṣūr ḥuṣ·ṣaḇ·tem wə·’el- maq·qe·ḇeṯ bō·wr nuq·qar·tem — WLC · 1

Look to Abraham your father, and to Sarah who gave you birth. When I called him, he was but one; then I blessed him and multiplied him.

הַבִּ֙יטוּ֙ אֶל־ אַבְרָהָ֣ם אֲבִיכֶ֔ם וְאֶל־ שָׂרָ֖ה תְּחוֹלֶלְכֶ֑ם כִּי־ קְרָאתִ֔יו אֶחָ֣ד וַאֲבָרְכֵ֖הוּ וְאַרְבֵּֽהוּ׃ס hab·bî·ṭū ’el- ’aḇ·rā·hām ’ă·ḇî·ḵem wə·’el- śā·rāh tə·ḥō·w·lel·ḵem kî- qə·rā·ṯîw ’e·ḥāḏ wa·’ă·ḇā·rə·ḵê·hū wə·’ar·bê·hū — WLC · 2

For the LORD will comfort Zion and will look with compassion on all her ruins; He will make her wilderness like Eden and her desert like the garden of the LORD. Joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and melodious song.

כִּֽי־ יְהוָ֜ה נִחַ֨ם צִיּ֗וֹן נִחַם֙ כָּל־ חָרְבֹתֶ֔יהָ וַיָּ֤שֶׂם מִדְבָּרָהּ֙ כְּעֵ֔דֶן וְעַרְבָתָ֖הּ כְּגַן־ יְהוָ֑ה שָׂשׂ֤וֹן וְשִׂמְחָה֙ יִמָּ֣צֵא בָ֔הּ תּוֹדָ֖ה זִמְרָֽה׃ס וְק֥וֹל kî- Yah·weh ni·ḥam ṣî·yō·wn ni·ḥam kāl- ḥā·rə·ḇō·ṯe·hā way·yā·śem miḏ·bā·rāh kə·‘ê·ḏen wə·‘ar·ḇā·ṯāh kə·ḡan- Yah·weh śā·śō·wn wə·śim·ḥāh yim·mā·ṣê ḇāh tō·w·ḏāh zim·rāh wə·qō·wl — WLC · 3

Pay attention to Me, My people, and listen to Me, My nation; for a law… will go out from Me, and My justice [will become] a light to the nations; I will bring it about quickly.

הַקְשִׁ֤יבוּ אֵלַי֙ עַמִּ֔י הַאֲזִ֑ינוּ אֵלַ֣י וּלְאוּמִּ֖י כִּ֤י תוֹרָה֙ מֵאִתִּ֣י תֵצֵ֔א וּמִשְׁפָּטִ֔י לְא֥וֹר עַמִּ֖ים אַרְגִּֽיעַ׃ haq·šî·ḇū ’ê·lay ‘am·mî ha·’ă·zî·nū ’ê·lay ū·lə·’ūm·mî kî ṯō·w·rāh mê·’it·tî ṯê·ṣê ū·miš·pā·ṭî lə·’ō·wr ‘am·mîm ’ar·gî·a‘ — WLC · 4

My righteousness draws near, My salvation is on the way, and My arms will bring justice to the nations. The islands will look for Me and wait in hope for My arm.

צִדְקִי֙ קָר֤וֹב יִשְׁעִ֔י יָצָ֣א וּזְרֹעַ֖י יִשְׁפֹּ֑טוּ עַמִּ֣ים אִיִּ֣ים יְקַוּ֔וּ אֵלַי֙ יְיַחֵלֽוּן׃ וְאֶל־ זְרֹעִ֖י ṣiḏ·qî qā·rō·wḇ yiš·‘î yā·ṣā ū·zə·rō·‘ay yiš·pō·ṭū ‘am·mîm ’î·yîm yə·qaw·wū ’ê·lay yə·ya·ḥê·lūn wə·’el- zə·rō·‘î — WLC · 5

Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth below; for the heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment, and its people will die like [gnats]… But My salvation will last forever…, and My righteousness will never fail.

שְׂאוּ֩ עֵֽינֵיכֶ֜ם לַשָּׁמַ֨יִם וְֽהַבִּ֧יטוּ אֶל־ הָאָ֣רֶץ מִתַּ֗חַת כִּֽי־ שָׁמַ֜יִם נִמְלָ֙חוּ֙ כֶּעָשָׁ֤ן וְהָאָ֙רֶץ֙ תִּבְלֶ֔ה כַּבֶּ֣גֶד וְיֹשְׁבֶ֖יהָ יְמוּת֑וּן כְּמוֹ־ כֵ֣ן וִישֽׁוּעָתִי֙ תִּֽהְיֶ֔ה לְעוֹלָ֣ם וְצִדְקָתִ֖י לֹ֥א תֵחָֽת׃ס śə·’ū ‘ê·nê·ḵem laš·šā·ma·yim wə·hab·bî·ṭū ’el- hā·’ā·reṣ mit·ta·ḥaṯ kî- šā·ma·yim nim·lā·ḥū ke·‘ā·šān wə·hā·’ā·reṣ tiḇ·leh kab·be·ḡeḏ wə·yō·šə·ḇe·hā yə·mū·ṯūn kə·mōw- ḵên wî·šū·‘ā·ṯî tih·yeh lə·‘ō·w·lām wə·ṣiḏ·qā·ṯî lō ṯê·ḥāṯ — WLC · 6

Listen to Me, you who know what is right, you people with My law in your hearts: Do not fear the scorn of men; do not be broken by their insults.

שִׁמְע֤וּ אֵלַי֙ יֹ֣דְעֵי צֶ֔דֶק עַ֖ם תּוֹרָתִ֣י בְלִבָּ֑ם אַל־ תִּֽירְאוּ֙ חֶרְפַּ֣ת אֱנ֔וֹשׁ אַל־ תֵּחָֽתּוּ׃ וּמִגִּדֻּפֹתָ֖ם šim·‘ū ’ê·lay yō·ḏə·‘ê ṣe·ḏeq ‘am tō·w·rā·ṯî ḇə·lib·bām ’al- tî·rə·’ū ḥer·paṯ ’ĕ·nō·wōš ’al- tê·ḥāt·tū ū·mig·gid·du·p̄ō·ṯām — WLC · 7

For the moth will devour them like a garment, and the worm will eat them like wool. But My righteousness will last forever…, My salvation through all generations…”

כִּ֤י עָ֔שׁ יֹאכְלֵ֣ם כַבֶּ֙גֶד֙ סָ֑ס יֹאכְלֵ֣ם וְכַצֶּ֖מֶר וְצִדְקָתִי֙ תִּֽהְיֶ֔ה לְעוֹלָ֣ם וִישׁוּעָתִ֖י לְד֥וֹר דּוֹרִֽים׃ס kî ‘āš yō·ḵə·lêm ḵab·be·ḡeḏ sās yō·ḵə·lêm wə·ḵaṣ·ṣe·mer wə·ṣiḏ·qā·ṯî tih·yeh lə·‘ō·w·lām wî·šū·‘ā·ṯî lə·ḏō·wr dō·w·rîm — WLC · 8

Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD. Wake up as in days past, as in generations of old. Was it not… You who cut Rahab to pieces, who pierced through the dragon?

עוּרִ֨י עוּרִ֤י לִבְשִׁי־ עֹז֙ זְר֣וֹעַ יְהוָ֔ה ע֚וּרִי כִּ֣ימֵי קֶ֔דֶם דֹּר֖וֹת עוֹלָמִ֑ים הֲל֥וֹא הִ֛יא אַתְּ־ רַ֖הַב הַמַּחְצֶ֥בֶת מְחוֹלֶ֥לֶת תַּנִּֽין׃ ‘ū·rî ‘ū·rî liḇ·šî- ‘ōz zə·rō·w·a‘ Yah·weh ‘ū·rî kî·mê qe·ḏem dō·rō·wṯ ‘ō·w·lā·mîm hă·lō·w hî ’at- ra·haḇ ham·maḥ·ṣe·ḇeṯ mə·ḥō·w·le·leṯ tan·nîn — WLC · 9

Was it not… You who dried up the sea, the waters of the great deep, who made a road in the depths of the sea for the redeemed to cross over?
𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤇𐤓𐤁𐤕 𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤉 𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤕𐤄𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤄 𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤌𐤏𐤌𐤒𐤉 𐤉𐤌 𐤂𐤀𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤁𐤓
הֲל֤וֹא הִיא֙ אַתְּ־ הַמַּחֲרֶ֣בֶת יָ֔ם מֵ֖י רַבָּ֑ה תְּה֣וֹם הַשָּׂ֙מָה֙ דֶּ֖רֶךְ מַֽעֲמַקֵּי־ יָ֔ם גְּאוּלִֽים׃ לַעֲבֹ֥ר hă·lō·w hî ’at- ham·ma·ḥă·re·ḇeṯ yām mê rab·bāh tə·hō·wm haś·śā·māh de·reḵ ma·‘ă·maq·qê- yām gə·’ū·lîm la·‘ă·ḇōr — WLC · 10

So the redeemed of the LORD will return and enter Zion with singing, crowned… with everlasting joy. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee.

וּפְדוּיֵ֨י יְהוָ֜ה יְשׁוּב֗וּן וּבָ֤אוּ צִיּוֹן֙ בְּרִנָּ֔ה עַל־ רֹאשָׁ֑ם עוֹלָ֖ם וְשִׂמְחַ֥ת שָׂשׂ֤וֹן וְשִׂמְחָה֙ יַשִּׂיג֔וּן יָג֥וֹן וַאֲנָחָֽה׃ס נָ֖סוּ ū·p̄ə·ḏū·yê Yah·weh yə·šū·ḇūn ū·ḇā·’ū ṣî·yō·wn bə·rin·nāh ‘al- rō·šām ‘ō·w·lām wə·śim·ḥaṯ śā·śō·wn wə·śim·ḥāh yaś·śî·ḡūn yā·ḡō·wn wa·’ă·nā·ḥāh nā·sū — WLC · 11

“I, even I, am He who comforts you. Why should you be afraid of mortal man, of a son of man who withers like grass?

אָנֹכִ֧י אָנֹכִ֛י ה֖וּא מְנַחֶמְכֶ֑ם מִֽי־ אַ֤תְּ וַתִּֽירְאִי֙ יָמ֔וּת מֵאֱנ֣וֹשׁ וּמִבֶּן־ אָדָ֖ם יִנָּתֵֽן׃ חָצִ֥יר ’ā·nō·ḵî ’ā·nō·ḵî hū mə·na·ḥem·ḵem mî- ’at wat·tî·rə·’î yā·mūṯ mê·’ĕ·nō·wōš ū·mib·ben- ’ā·ḏām yin·nā·ṯên ḥā·ṣîr — WLC · 12

But you have forgotten the LORD, your Maker, who stretched out the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth. You live in terror vvv all day long… because of the fury of the oppressor who is bent on destruction. But where is the fury of the oppressor?

וַתִּשְׁכַּ֞ח יְהוָ֣ה עֹשֶׂ֗ךָ נוֹטֶ֣ה שָׁמַיִם֮ וְיֹסֵ֣ד אָרֶץ֒ וַתְּפַחֵ֨ד תָּמִ֜יד כָּל־ הַיּ֗וֹם מִפְּנֵי֙ חֲמַ֣ת הַמֵּצִ֔יק כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר כּוֹנֵ֖ן לְהַשְׁחִ֑ית וְאַיֵּ֖ה חֲמַ֥ת הַמֵּצִֽיק׃ wat·tiš·kaḥ Yah·weh ‘ō·śe·ḵā nō·w·ṭeh šā·ma·yim wə·yō·sêḏ ’ā·reṣ wat·tə·p̄a·ḥêḏ tā·mîḏ kāl- hay·yō·wm mip·pə·nê ḥă·maṯ ham·mê·ṣîq ka·’ă·šer kō·w·nên lə·haš·ḥîṯ wə·’ay·yêh ḥă·maṯ ham·mê·ṣîq — WLC · 13

The captive will soon be freed; he will not die in the dungeon, and his bread will not be lacking.

צֹעֶ֖ה מִהַ֥ר לְהִפָּתֵ֑חַ וְלֹא־ יָמ֣וּת לַשַּׁ֔חַת לַחְמֽוֹ׃ וְלֹ֥א יֶחְסַ֖ר ṣō·‘eh mi·har lə·hip·pā·ṯê·aḥ wə·lō- yā·mūṯ laš·ša·ḥaṯ laḥ·mōw wə·lō yeḥ·sar — WLC · 14

For I am the LORD your God who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar— the LORD of Hosts [is] His name.

וְאָֽנֹכִי֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ רֹגַ֣ע הַיָּ֔ם גַּלָּ֑יו וַיֶּהֱמ֖וּ יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת שְׁמֽוֹ׃ wə·’ā·nō·ḵî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā rō·ḡa‘ hay·yām gal·lāw way·ye·hĕ·mū Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ šə·mōw — WLC · 15

I have put My words in your mouth, and covered you with the shadow of My hand, to establish the heavens, to found the earth, and to say to Zion, ‘You are My people.’”

These pairs have befallen you: devastation and destruction, famine and sword. Who will grieve for you? Who can comfort you?

Your sons have fainted; they lie at the head of every street, like an antelope in a net. They are full of the wrath of the LORD, the rebuke of your God.

Thus says your Lord, the LORD, even your God, who defends His people: “See, I have removed from your hand the cup of staggering -. From that goblet, the cup of My fury, you will never drink again…

I will place it in the hands of your tormentors, who told you: ‘Lie down, so we can walk over you,’ so that you made your back like the ground, like a street to be traversed.”
