Israel’s Stubbornness

[“]Listen to this, O house of Jacob, you who are called by the name of Israel, who have descended from the line of Judah, who swear by the name of the LORD, who invoke the God of Israel— but not in truth [or] righteousness—
𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤄𐤍𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤔𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤑𐤀𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤄𐤍𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤔𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤆𐤊𐤉𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤀 𐤁𐤀𐤌𐤕 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤁𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤄
שִׁמְעוּ־ זֹ֣את בֵּֽית־ יַעֲקֹ֗ב הַנִּקְרָאִים֙ בְּשֵׁ֣ם יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל יָצָ֑אוּ וּמִמֵּ֥י יְהוּדָ֖ה הַֽנִּשְׁבָּעִ֣ים׀ בְּשֵׁ֣ם יְהוָ֗ה יַזְכִּ֔ירוּ וּבֵאלֹהֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ לֹ֥א בֶאֱמֶ֖ת וְלֹ֥א בִצְדָקָֽה׃ šim·‘ū- zōṯ bêṯ- ya·‘ă·qōḇ han·niq·rā·’îm bə·šêm yiś·rā·’êl yā·ṣā·’ū ū·mim·mê yə·hū·ḏāh han·niš·bā·‘îm bə·šêm Yah·weh yaz·kî·rū ū·ḇê·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl lō ḇe·’ĕ·meṯ wə·lō ḇiṣ·ḏā·qāh — WLC · 1

who indeed call yourselves after the holy city and lean on the God of Israel; the LORD of Hosts [is] His name.
𐤊𐤉 𐤍𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤄𐤒𐤃𐤔 𐤌𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤍𐤎𐤌𐤊𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤎
כִּֽי־ נִקְרָ֔אוּ הַקֹּ֙דֶשׁ֙ מֵעִ֤יר נִסְמָ֑כוּ וְעַל־ אֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת שְׁמֽוֹ׃ס kî- niq·rā·’ū haq·qō·ḏeš mê·‘îr nis·mā·ḵū wə·‘al- ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ šə·mōw — WLC · 2

I foretold the former things long ago; they came out of My mouth and I proclaimed them. Suddenly I acted, and they came to pass.

הִגַּ֔דְתִּי הָרִֽאשֹׁנוֹת֙ מֵאָ֣ז יָצְא֖וּ וּמִפִּ֥י וְאַשְׁמִיעֵ֑ם פִּתְאֹ֥ם עָשִׂ֖יתִי וַתָּבֹֽאנָה׃ hig·gaḏ·tî hā·ri·šō·nō·wṯ mê·’āz yā·ṣə·’ū ū·mip·pî wə·’aš·mî·‘êm piṯ·’ōm ‘ā·śî·ṯî wat·tā·ḇō·nāh — WLC · 3

For I knew that you… are stubborn; your neck is iron and your forehead [is] bronze.

מִדַּעְתִּ֕י כִּ֥י אָ֑תָּה וְגִ֤יד קָשֶׁ֖ה עָרְפֶּ֔ךָ בַּרְזֶל֙ וּמִצְחֲךָ֖ נְחוּשָֽׁה׃ mid·da‘·tî kî ’āt·tāh wə·ḡîḏ qā·šeh ‘ā·rə·pe·ḵā bar·zel ū·miṣ·ḥă·ḵā nə·ḥū·šāh — WLC · 4

Therefore I declared it to you long ago; I announced it before it came to pass, so that you could not claim, ‘My idol has done this; my carved image and molten god has ordained it.’

וָאַגִּ֤יד לְךָ֙ מֵאָ֔ז הִשְׁמַעְתִּ֑יךָ בְּטֶ֥רֶם תָּב֖וֹא פֶּן־ תֹּאמַר֙ עָצְבִּ֣י עָשָׂ֔ם וּפִסְלִ֥י וְנִסְכִּ֖י צִוָּֽם׃ wā·’ag·gîḏ lə·ḵā mê·’āz hiš·ma‘·tî·ḵā bə·ṭe·rem tā·ḇō·w pen- tō·mar ‘ā·ṣə·bî ‘ā·śām ū·p̄is·lî wə·nis·kî ṣiw·wām — WLC · 5

You have heard [these things]; look at them all. Will you not acknowledge [them]? From now on I will tell you of new things, hidden things unknown to you…

שָׁמַ֤עְתָּֽ חֲזֵה֙ כֻּלָּ֔הּ וְאַתֶּ֖ם הֲל֣וֹא תַגִּ֑ידוּ מֵעַ֔תָּה הִשְׁמַעְתִּ֤יךָ חֲדָשׁוֹת֙ וּנְצֻר֖וֹת וְלֹ֥א יְדַעְתָּֽם׃ šā·ma‘·tā ḥă·zêh kul·lāh wə·’at·tem hă·lō·w ṯag·gî·ḏū mê·‘at·tāh hiš·ma‘·tî·ḵā ḥă·ḏā·šō·wṯ ū·nə·ṣu·rō·wṯ wə·lō yə·ḏa‘·tām — WLC · 6

They are created now, and not long ago; you have not heard of them before today. So you cannot claim, ‘I already knew them!’

נִבְרְאוּ֙ עַתָּ֤ה וְלֹ֣א מֵאָ֔ז וְלֹ֣א שְׁמַעְתָּ֑ם וְלִפְנֵי־ י֖וֹם פֶּן־ תֹּאמַ֖ר הִנֵּ֥ה יְדַעְתִּֽין׃ niḇ·rə·’ū ‘at·tāh wə·lō mê·’āz wə·lō šə·ma‘·tām wə·lip̄·nê- yō·wm pen- tō·mar hin·nêh yə·ḏa‘·tîn — WLC · 7

- You have never heard;… you have never understood;… for a long time your ears have not been open. For I knew how deceitful you are…; you have been called a rebel from birth.

גַּ֣ם לֹֽא־ שָׁמַ֗עְתָּ גַּ֚ם לֹ֣א יָדַ֔עְתָּ גַּ֕ם מֵאָ֖ז אָזְנֶ֑ךָ לֹא־ פִתְּחָ֣ה כִּ֤י יָדַ֙עְתִּי֙ בָּג֣וֹד תִּבְגּ֔וֹד קֹ֥רָא לָֽךְ׃ וּפֹשֵׁ֥עַ מִבֶּ֖טֶן gam lō- šā·ma‘·tā gam lō yā·ḏa‘·tā gam mê·’āz ’ā·zə·ne·ḵā lō- p̄it·tə·ḥāh kî yā·ḏa‘·tî bā·ḡō·wḏ tiḇ·gō·wḏ qō·rā lāḵ ū·p̄ō·šê·a‘ mib·be·ṭen — WLC · 8

For the sake of My name I will delay My wrath; for the sake of My praise I will restrain it so that you will not be cut off.

לְמַ֤עַן שְׁמִי֙ אַאֲרִ֣יךְ אַפִּ֔י וּתְהִלָּתִ֖י אֶחֱטָם־ לָ֑ךְ לְבִלְתִּ֖י הַכְרִיתֶֽךָ׃ lə·ma·‘an šə·mî ’a·’ă·rîḵ ’ap·pî ū·ṯə·hil·lā·ṯî ’e·ḥĕ·ṭām- lāḵ lə·ḇil·tî haḵ·rî·ṯe·ḵā — WLC · 9

See, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.

הִנֵּ֥ה צְרַפְתִּ֖יךָ וְלֹ֣א בְכָ֑סֶף בְּחַרְתִּ֖יךָ בְּכ֥וּר עֹֽנִי׃ hin·nêh ṣə·rap̄·tî·ḵā wə·lō ḇə·ḵā·sep̄ bə·ḥar·tî·ḵā bə·ḵūr ‘ō·nî — WLC · 10

For My own sake, My very own sake, I will act; for how can I let Myself be defamed? I will not yield My glory to another.

לְמַעֲנִ֧י לְמַעֲנִ֛י אֶעֱשֶׂ֖ה כִּ֣י אֵ֣יךְ יֵחָ֑ל לֹֽא־ אֶתֵּֽן׃ס וּכְבוֹדִ֖י לְאַחֵ֥ר lə·ma·‘ă·nî lə·ma·‘ă·nî ’e·‘ĕ·śeh kî ’êḵ yê·ḥāl lō- ’et·tên ū·ḵə·ḇō·w·ḏî lə·’a·ḥêr — WLC · 11
Deliverance Promised to Israel

Listen to Me, O Jacob, and Israel, whom I have called: I am He; I am the first, and I am… the last.
𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤐 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤅𐤍
שְׁמַ֤ע אֵלַי֙ יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מְקֹרָאִ֑י אֲנִי־ הוּא֙ אֲנִ֣י רִאשׁ֔וֹן אֲנִ֥י אַ֖ף אַחֲרֽוֹן׃ šə·ma‘ ’ê·lay ya·‘ă·qōḇ wə·yiś·rā·’êl mə·qō·rā·’î ’ă·nî- hū ’ă·nî ri·šō·wn ’ă·nî ’ap̄ ’a·ḥă·rō·wn — WLC · 12

Surely My own hand founded the earth, and My right hand spread out the heavens; when I… summon them, they stand up together.

אַף־ יָדִי֙ יָ֣סְדָה אֶ֔רֶץ וִֽימִינִ֖י טִפְּחָ֣ה שָׁמָ֑יִם אֲנִ֛י אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם קֹרֵ֥א יַעַמְד֥וּ יַחְדָּֽו׃ ’ap̄- yā·ḏî yā·sə·ḏāh ’e·reṣ wî·mî·nî ṭip·pə·ḥāh šā·mā·yim ’ă·nî ’ă·lê·hem qō·rê ya·‘am·ḏū yaḥ·dāw — WLC · 13

Come together, all of you, and listen: Which [of the idols] has foretold these things? The LORD’s chosen ally will carry out His desire against Babylon, and His arm will be against the Chaldeans.

הִקָּבְצ֤וּ כֻלְּכֶם֙ וּֽשֲׁמָ֔עוּ מִ֥י בָהֶ֖ם הִגִּ֣יד אֶת־ אֵ֑לֶּה יְהוָ֣ה אֲהֵב֔וֹ יַעֲשֶׂ֤ה חֶפְצוֹ֙ בְּבָבֶ֔ל וּזְרֹע֖וֹ כַּשְׂדִּֽים׃ hiq·qā·ḇə·ṣū ḵul·lə·ḵem ū·šă·mā·‘ū mî ḇā·hem hig·gîḏ ’eṯ- ’êl·leh Yah·weh ’ă·hê·ḇōw ya·‘ă·śeh ḥep̄·ṣōw bə·ḇā·ḇel ū·zə·rō·‘ōw kaś·dîm — WLC · 14

I, even I, have spoken; yes, I have called him. I have brought him, and he will succeed in his mission.

אֲנִ֥י אֲנִ֛י דִּבַּ֖רְתִּי אַף־ קְרָאתִ֑יו הֲבִיאֹתִ֖יו וְהִצְלִ֥יחַ דַּרְכּֽוֹ׃ ’ă·nî ’ă·nî dib·bar·tî ’ap̄- qə·rā·ṯîw hă·ḇî·’ō·ṯîw wə·hiṣ·lî·aḥ dar·kōw — WLC · 15

Come near to Me and listen to this: From the beginning I have not spoken in secret; from the time it happened, I was there.” And now the Lord GOD has sent me, accompanied by His Spirit.

קִרְב֧וּ אֵלַ֣י שִׁמְעוּ־ זֹ֗את מֵרֹאשׁ֙ לֹ֤א דִּבַּ֔רְתִּי בַּסֵּ֣תֶר מֵעֵ֥ת הֱיוֹתָ֖הּ אָ֑נִי שָׁ֣ם וְעַתָּ֗ה אֲדֹנָ֧י יְהוִ֛ה שְׁלָחַ֖נִי וְרוּחֽוֹ׃פ qir·ḇū ’ê·lay šim·‘ū- zōṯ mê·rōš lō dib·bar·tî bas·sê·ṯer mê·‘êṯ hĕ·yō·w·ṯāh ’ā·nî šām wə·‘at·tāh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh šə·lā·ḥa·nî wə·rū·ḥōw — WLC · 16

Thus says the LORD your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the LORD your God, who teaches you for your benefit, who directs you in the way you should go.
𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤂𐤀𐤋𐤊 𐤒𐤃𐤅𐤔 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤋𐤌𐤃𐤊 𐤋𐤄𐤅𐤏𐤉𐤋 𐤌𐤃𐤓𐤉𐤊𐤊 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤕𐤋𐤊
כֹּֽה־ אָמַ֧ר יְהוָ֛ה גֹּאַלְךָ֖ קְד֣וֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֲנִ֨י יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ מְלַמֶּדְךָ֣ לְהוֹעִ֔יל מַדְרִֽיכֲךָ֖ בְּדֶ֥רֶךְ תֵּלֵֽךְ׃ kōh- ’ā·mar Yah·weh gō·’al·ḵā qə·ḏō·wōš yiś·rā·’êl ’ă·nî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā mə·lam·meḏ·ḵā lə·hō·w·‘îl maḏ·rî·ḵă·ḵā bə·ḏe·reḵ tê·lêḵ — WLC · 17

If only you had paid attention to My commandments, your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like waves of the sea.
𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤒𐤔𐤁𐤕 𐤋𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤕𐤉 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤍𐤄𐤓 𐤅𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤕𐤊 𐤊𐤂𐤋𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤌
ל֥וּא הִקְשַׁ֖בְתָּ לְמִצְוֺתָ֑י שְׁלוֹמֶ֔ךָ וַיְהִ֤י כַנָּהָר֙ וְצִדְקָתְךָ֖ כְּגַלֵּ֥י הַיָּֽם׃ lū hiq·šaḇ·tā lə·miṣ·wō·ṯāy šə·lō·w·me·ḵā way·hî ḵan·nā·hār wə·ṣiḏ·qā·ṯə·ḵā kə·ḡal·lê hay·yām — WLC · 18

Your descendants would have been as [countless as] the sand, and your offspring… as [numerous as] its grains; their name would never be cut off… or eliminated from My presence.”

זַרְעֶ֔ךָ וַיְהִ֤י כַחוֹל֙ וְצֶאֱצָאֵ֥י מֵעֶ֖יךָ כִּמְעֹתָ֑יו שְׁמ֖וֹ לֹֽא־ יִכָּרֵ֧ת וְֽלֹא־ יִשָּׁמֵ֛ד מִלְּפָנָֽי׃ zar·‘e·ḵā way·hî ḵa·ḥō·wl wə·ṣe·’ĕ·ṣā·’ê mê·‘e·ḵā kim·‘ō·ṯāw šə·mōw lō- yik·kā·rêṯ wə·lō- yiš·šā·mêḏ mil·lə·p̄ā·nāy — WLC · 19

Leave Babylon! Flee from the Chaldeans! Declare it with a shout of joy, proclaim it, let it go out to the ends of the earth, saying, “The LORD has redeemed His servant Jacob!”
