Here Is My Servant

[“]Here is My Servant, whom I uphold My Chosen One, [in whom] My soul delights. I will put My Spirit on Him, [and] He will bring justice to the nations.
𐤄𐤍 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤌𐤊 𐤁𐤅 𐤁𐤇𐤉𐤓𐤉 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤉 𐤓𐤑𐤕𐤄 𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤓𐤅𐤇𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤅𐤑𐤉𐤀 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤋𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌
הֵ֤ן עַבְדִּי֙ אֶתְמָךְ־ בּ֔וֹ בְּחִירִ֖י נַפְשִׁ֑י רָצְתָ֣ה נָתַ֤תִּי רוּחִי֙ עָלָ֔יו יוֹצִֽיא׃ מִשְׁפָּ֖ט לַגּוֹיִ֥ם hên ‘aḇ·dî ’eṯ·māḵ- bōw bə·ḥî·rî nap̄·šî rā·ṣə·ṯāh nā·ṯat·tî rū·ḥî ‘ā·lāw yō·w·ṣî miš·pāṭ lag·gō·w·yim — WLC · 1

He will not cry out [or] raise [His voice], nor make His voice heard in the streets.

לֹ֥א יִצְעַ֖ק וְלֹ֣א יִשָּׂ֑א וְלֹֽא־ קוֹלֽוֹ׃ יַשְׁמִ֥יעַ בַּח֖וּץ lō yiṣ·‘aq wə·lō yiś·śā wə·lō- qō·w·lōw yaš·mî·a‘ ba·ḥūṣ — WLC · 2

A bruised reed He will not break and a smoldering wick He will not extinguish; He will faithfully bring forth justice.

רָצוּץ֙ קָנֶ֤ה לֹ֣א יִשְׁבּ֔וֹר כֵהָ֖ה וּפִשְׁתָּ֥ה לֹ֣א יְכַבֶּ֑נָּה לֶאֱמֶ֖ת יוֹצִ֥יא מִשְׁפָּֽט׃ rā·ṣūṣ qā·neh lō yiš·bō·wr ḵê·hāh ū·p̄iš·tāh lō yə·ḵab·ben·nāh le·’ĕ·meṯ yō·w·ṣî miš·pāṭ — WLC · 3

He will not grow weak… or discouraged before He has established justice on the earth. In His law the islands will put their hope.”

לֹ֤א יִכְהֶה֙ וְלֹ֣א יָר֔וּץ עַד־ יָשִׂ֥ים מִשְׁפָּ֑ט בָּאָ֖רֶץ וּלְתוֹרָת֖וֹ אִיִּ֥ים יְיַחֵֽילוּ׃פ lō yiḵ·heh wə·lō yā·rūṣ ‘aḏ- yā·śîm miš·pāṭ bā·’ā·reṣ ū·lə·ṯō·w·rā·ṯōw ’î·yîm yə·ya·ḥê·lū — WLC · 4

This is what God the LORD says— He who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and its offspring, who gives breath to the people on it and life to those who walk in it:

כֹּֽה־ הָאֵ֣ל׀ יְהוָ֗ה אָמַ֞ר בּוֹרֵ֤א הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ וְנ֣וֹטֵיהֶ֔ם רֹקַ֥ע הָאָ֖רֶץ וְצֶאֱצָאֶ֑יהָ נֹתֵ֤ן נְשָׁמָה֙ לָעָ֣ם עָלֶ֔יהָ וְר֖וּחַ לַהֹלְכִ֥ים בָּֽהּ׃ kōh- hā·’êl Yah·weh ’ā·mar bō·w·rê haš·šā·ma·yim wə·nō·w·ṭê·hem rō·qa‘ hā·’ā·reṣ wə·ṣe·’ĕ·ṣā·’e·hā nō·ṯên nə·šā·māh lā·‘ām ‘ā·le·hā wə·rū·aḥ la·hō·lə·ḵîm bāh — WLC · 5

“I, the LORD, have called you for a righteous purpose, and I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and appoint you to be a covenant for the people and a light to the nations,

אֲנִ֧י יְהוָ֛ה קְרָאתִ֥יךָֽ בְצֶ֖דֶק וְאַחְזֵ֣ק בְּיָדֶ֑ךָ וְאֶצָּרְךָ֗ וְאֶתֶּנְךָ֛ לִבְרִ֥ית עָ֖ם לְא֥וֹר גּוֹיִֽם׃ ’ă·nî Yah·weh qə·rā·ṯî·ḵā ḇə·ṣe·ḏeq wə·’aḥ·zêq bə·yā·ḏe·ḵā wə·’eṣ·ṣā·rə·ḵā wə·’et·ten·ḵā liḇ·rîṯ ‘ām lə·’ō·wr gō·w·yim — WLC · 6

to open the eyes of the blind, to bring prisoners out of the dungeon and those sitting in darkness out from the prison house.

לִפְקֹ֖חַ עֵינַ֣יִם עִוְר֑וֹת לְהוֹצִ֤יא אַסִּ֔יר מִמַּסְגֵּר֙ יֹ֥שְׁבֵי חֹֽשֶׁךְ׃ כֶּ֖לֶא מִבֵּ֥ית lip̄·qō·aḥ ‘ê·na·yim ‘iw·rō·wṯ lə·hō·w·ṣî ’as·sîr mim·mas·gêr yō·šə·ḇê ḥō·šeḵ ke·le mib·bêṯ — WLC · 7

I am the LORD; that is My name! I will not yield My glory to another or My praise to idols.

אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה ה֣וּא שְׁמִ֑י לֹֽא־ אֶתֵּ֔ן וּכְבוֹדִי֙ לְאַחֵ֣ר וּתְהִלָּתִ֖י לַפְּסִילִֽים׃ ’ă·nî Yah·weh hū šə·mî lō- ’et·tên ū·ḵə·ḇō·w·ḏî lə·’a·ḥêr ū·ṯə·hil·lā·ṯî lap·pə·sî·lîm — WLC · 8

Behold, the former things have happened, and now I declare new things. Before they spring forth I proclaim them to you.”

הִנֵּה־ הָרִֽאשֹׁנ֖וֹת בָ֑אוּ אֲנִ֣י מַגִּ֔יד וַֽחֲדָשׁוֹת֙ בְּטֶ֥רֶם תִּצְמַ֖חְנָה אַשְׁמִ֥יע אֶתְכֶֽם׃פ hin·nêh- hā·ri·šō·nō·wṯ ḇā·’ū ’ă·nî mag·gîḏ wa·ḥă·ḏā·šō·wṯ bə·ṭe·rem tiṣ·maḥ·nāh ʾaš·mīʿ ’eṯ·ḵem — WLC · 9
A New Song of Praise

Sing to the LORD a new song— His praise from the ends of the earth— you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, you islands, and all who dwell in them.

שִׁ֤ירוּ לַֽיהוָה֙ חָדָ֔שׁ שִׁ֣יר תְּהִלָּת֖וֹ מִקְצֵ֣ה הָאָ֑רֶץ יוֹרְדֵ֤י הַיָּם֙ וּמְלֹא֔וֹ אִיִּ֖ים וְיֹשְׁבֵיהֶֽם׃ šî·rū Yah·weh ḥā·ḏāš šîr tə·hil·lā·ṯōw miq·ṣêh hā·’ā·reṣ yō·wr·ḏê hay·yām ū·mə·lō·’ōw ’î·yîm wə·yō·šə·ḇê·hem — WLC · 10

Let the desert and its cities raise their voices; [let] the villages of Kedar [cry aloud]. Let the people of Sela sing for joy; let them cry out from the mountaintops…

מִדְבָּר֙ וְעָרָ֔יו יִשְׂא֤וּ חֲצֵרִ֖ים תֵּשֵׁ֣ב קֵדָ֑ר יֹ֣שְׁבֵי סֶ֔לַע יָרֹ֙נּוּ֙ יִצְוָֽחוּ׃ מֵרֹ֥אשׁ הָרִ֖ים miḏ·bār wə·‘ā·rāw yiś·’ū ḥă·ṣê·rîm tê·šêḇ qê·ḏār yō·šə·ḇê se·la‘ yā·rōn·nū yiṣ·wā·ḥū mê·rōš hā·rîm — WLC · 11

Let them give glory to the LORD and declare His praise in the islands.

יָשִׂ֥ימוּ כָּב֑וֹד לַֽיהוָ֖ה יַגִּֽידוּ׃ וּתְהִלָּת֖וֹ בָּאִיִּ֥ים yā·śî·mū kā·ḇō·wḏ Yah·weh yag·gî·ḏū ū·ṯə·hil·lā·ṯōw bā·’î·yîm — WLC · 12

The LORD goes forth like a mighty one; He stirs up His zeal like a warrior… He shouts; yes, He roars in triumph over His enemies:

יְהוָה֙ יֵצֵ֔א כַּגִּבּ֣וֹר יָעִ֣יר קִנְאָ֑ה כְּאִ֥ישׁ מִלְחָמ֖וֹת יָרִ֙יעַ֙ אַף־ יַצְרִ֔יחַ יִתְגַּבָּֽר׃ס עַל־ אֹיְבָ֖יו Yah·weh yê·ṣê kag·gib·bō·wr yā·‘îr qin·’āh kə·’îš mil·ḥā·mō·wṯ yā·rî·a‘ ’ap̄- yaṣ·rî·aḥ yiṯ·gab·bār ‘al- ’ō·yə·ḇāw — WLC · 13

“I have kept silent from ages past; I have remained quiet and restrained. But now I will groan like a woman in labor; I will at once gasp and pant.

הֶחֱשֵׁ֙יתִי֙ מֵֽעוֹלָ֔ם אַחֲרִ֖ישׁ אֶתְאַפָּ֑ק אֶפְעֶ֔ה כַּיּוֹלֵדָ֣ה יָֽחַד׃ אֶשֹּׁ֥ם וְאֶשְׁאַ֖ף he·ḥĕ·šê·ṯî mê·‘ō·w·lām ’a·ḥă·rîš ’eṯ·’ap·pāq ’ep̄·‘eh kay·yō·w·lê·ḏāh yā·ḥaḏ ’eš·šōm wə·’eš·’ap̄ — WLC · 14

I will lay waste the mountains and hills and dry up all their vegetation. I will turn the rivers into dry land and drain the marshes.

אַחֲרִ֤יב הָרִים֙ וּגְבָע֔וֹת אוֹבִ֑ישׁ וְכָל־ עֶשְׂבָּ֖ם וְשַׂמְתִּ֤י נְהָרוֹת֙ לָֽאִיִּ֔ים אוֹבִֽישׁ׃ וַאֲגַמִּ֖ים ’a·ḥă·rîḇ hā·rîm ū·ḡə·ḇā·‘ō·wṯ ’ō·w·ḇîš wə·ḵāl ‘eś·bām wə·śam·tî nə·hā·rō·wṯ lā·’î·yîm ’ō·w·ḇîš wa·’ă·ḡam·mîm — WLC · 15

I will lead the blind by a way they did not know; I will guide them on unfamiliar… paths. I will turn darkness into light before them and rough places into level ground. These things I will do for them, and I will not forsake them.

וְהוֹלַכְתִּ֣י עִוְרִ֗ים בְּדֶ֙רֶךְ֙ לֹ֣א יָדָ֔עוּ אַדְרִיכֵ֑ם לֹֽא־ יָדְע֖וּ בִּנְתִיב֥וֹת אָשִׂים֩ מַחְשָׁ֨ךְ לָא֗וֹר לִפְנֵיהֶ֜ם וּמַֽעֲקַשִּׁים֙ לְמִישׁ֔וֹר אֵ֚לֶּה הַדְּבָרִ֔ים עֲשִׂיתִ֖ם וְלֹ֥א עֲזַבְתִּֽים׃ wə·hō·w·laḵ·tî ‘iw·rîm bə·ḏe·reḵ lō yā·ḏā·‘ū ’aḏ·rî·ḵêm lō- yā·ḏə·‘ū bin·ṯî·ḇō·wṯ ’ā·śîm maḥ·šāḵ lā·’ō·wr lip̄·nê·hem ū·ma·‘ă·qaš·šîm lə·mî·šō·wr ’êl·leh had·də·ḇā·rîm ‘ă·śî·ṯim wə·lō ‘ă·zaḇ·tîm — WLC · 16

But those who trust in idols and say to molten images, ‘You are our gods!’ will be turned back in utter shame.

הַבֹּטְחִ֖ים בַּפָּ֑סֶל הָאֹמְרִ֥ים לְמַסֵּכָ֖ה אַתֶּ֥ם אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃ס נָסֹ֤גוּ אָחוֹר֙ בֹ֔שֶׁת יֵבֹ֣שׁוּ hab·bō·ṭə·ḥîm bap·pā·sel hā·’ō·mə·rîm lə·mas·sê·ḵāh ’at·tem ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū nā·sō·ḡū ’ā·ḥō·wr ḇō·šeṯ yê·ḇō·šū — WLC · 17
Israel Is Deaf and Blind

Listen, you deaf [ones]; look, you blind [ones], that you may see!

שְׁמָ֑עוּ הַחֵרְשִׁ֖ים הַבִּ֥יטוּ וְהַעִוְרִ֖ים לִרְאֽוֹת׃ šə·mā·‘ū ha·ḥê·rə·šîm hab·bî·ṭū wə·ha·‘iw·rîm lir·’ō·wṯ — WLC · 18

Who is blind but… My servant, or deaf like the messenger I am sending? Who is blind like My covenant partner, or blind like the servant of the LORD?

מִ֤י עִוֵּר֙ כִּ֣י אִם־ עַבְדִּ֔י וְחֵרֵ֖שׁ כְּמַלְאָכִ֣י אֶשְׁלָ֑ח מִ֤י עִוֵּר֙ כִּמְשֻׁלָּ֔ם וְעִוֵּ֖ר כְּעֶ֥בֶד יְהוָֽה׃ mî ‘iw·wêr kî ’im- ‘aḇ·dî wə·ḥê·rêš kə·mal·’ā·ḵî ’eš·lāḥ mî ‘iw·wêr kim·šul·lām wə·‘iw·wêr kə·‘e·ḇeḏ Yah·weh — WLC · 19

Though seeing many things, you do not keep watch. Though your ears are open, you do not hear.”

רָאִיתָ רַבּ֖וֹת וְלֹ֣א תִשְׁמֹ֑ר אָזְנַ֖יִם פָּק֥וֹחַ וְלֹ֥א יִשְׁמָֽע׃ rå̄·ʾī·ṯå̄ rab·bō·wṯ wə·lō ṯiš·mōr ’ā·zə·na·yim pā·qō·w·aḥ wə·lō yiš·mā‘ — WLC · 20

The LORD was pleased, for the sake of His righteousness, to magnify His law and make it glorious.

But this is a people plundered and looted, all trapped in caves or imprisoned in dungeons… They have become plunder with no one to rescue them, and loot with no one to say, “Send them back!”

Who gave Jacob up for spoil, and Israel to the plunderers? Was it not the LORD, against whom we have sinned vvv They were unwilling to walk in His ways, and they would not obey His law.

So He poured out on them His furious anger and the fierceness of battle. It enveloped them in flames, but they did not understand; it consumed them but they did not take it to heart.
