Prepare the Way for the LORD
1
“Comfort, comfort My people,” says your God.
𐤍𐤇𐤌𐤅 𐤍𐤇𐤌𐤅 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊𐤌
נַחֲמ֥וּ נַחֲמ֖וּ עַמִּ֑י יֹאמַ֖ר אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ na·ḥă·mū na·ḥă·mū ‘am·mî yō·mar ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem — WLC · 1

“Speak tenderly to… Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her forced labor has been completed; her iniquity… has been pardoned. For she has received from the hand of the LORD double for all her sins.”

A voice of one calling: “Prepare the way for the LORD in the wilderness; make a straight highway for our God in the desert.

ק֣וֹל קוֹרֵ֔א פַּנּ֖וּ דֶּ֣רֶךְ יְהוָ֑ה בַּמִּדְבָּ֕ר יַשְּׁרוּ֙ מְסִלָּ֖ה לֵאלֹהֵֽינוּ׃ בָּעֲרָבָ֔ה qō·wl qō·w·rê pan·nū de·reḵ Yah·weh bam·miḏ·bār yaš·šə·rū mə·sil·lāh lê·lō·hê·nū bā·‘ă·rā·ḇāh — WLC · 3

Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill made low; the uneven [ground] will become smooth, and the rugged land a plain.

כָּל־ גֶּיא֙ יִנָּשֵׂ֔א וְכָל־ הַ֥ר וְגִבְעָ֖ה יִשְׁפָּ֑לוּ הֶֽעָקֹב֙ וְהָיָ֤ה לְמִישׁ֔וֹר וְהָרְכָסִ֖ים לְבִקְעָֽה׃ kāl- ge yin·nā·śê wə·ḵāl har wə·ḡiḇ·‘āh yiš·pā·lū he·‘ā·qōḇ wə·hā·yāh lə·mî·šō·wr wə·hā·rə·ḵā·sîm lə·ḇiq·‘āh — WLC · 4

And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all humanity together will see it.” For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.

The Enduring Word

A voice says, “Cry out!” And I asked, “What should I cry out?” “All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flowers of the field.

ק֚וֹל אֹמֵ֣ר קְרָ֔א וְאָמַ֖ר מָ֣ה אֶקְרָ֑א כָּל־ הַבָּשָׂ֣ר חָצִ֔יר וְכָל־ חַסְדּ֖וֹ כְּצִ֥יץ הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ qō·wl ’ō·mêr qə·rā wə·’ā·mar māh ’eq·rā kāl- hab·bā·śār ḥā·ṣîr wə·ḵāl ḥas·dōw kə·ṣîṣ haś·śā·ḏeh — WLC · 6

The grass withers [and] the flowers fall when the breath of the LORD blows on them; indeed, the people are grass.

חָצִיר֙ יָבֵ֤שׁ צִ֔יץ נָ֣בֵֽל כִּ֛י ר֥וּחַ יְהוָ֖ה נָ֣שְׁבָה בּ֑וֹ אָכֵ֥ן הָעָֽם׃ חָצִ֖יר ḥā·ṣîr yā·ḇêš ṣîṣ nā·ḇêl kî rū·aḥ Yah·weh nā·šə·ḇāh bōw ’ā·ḵên hā·‘ām ḥā·ṣîr — WLC · 7

Here Is Your God!

Go up on a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good news. Raise your voice loudly…, O Jerusalem, herald of good news. Lift [it] up, do not be afraid! Say to the cities of Judah, “Here is your God!”

עֲלִי־ לָךְ֙ עַ֣ל גָּבֹ֤הַ הַר־ צִיּ֔וֹן מְבַשֶּׂ֣רֶת הָרִ֤ימִי קוֹלֵ֔ךְ בַכֹּ֙חַ֙ יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם מְבַשֶּׂ֖רֶת הָרִ֙ימִי֙ אַל־ תִּירָ֔אִי אִמְרִי֙ לְעָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה הִנֵּ֖ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ ‘ă·lî- lāḵ ‘al gā·ḇō·ha har- ṣî·yō·wn mə·ḇaś·śe·reṯ hā·rî·mî qō·w·lêḵ ḇak·kō·aḥ yə·rū·šā·lim mə·ḇaś·śe·reṯ hā·rî·mî ’al- tî·rā·’î ’im·rî lə·‘ā·rê yə·hū·ḏāh hin·nêh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem — WLC · 9

Behold, the Lord GOD comes with might, and His arm establishes His rule… His reward is with Him, and His recompense accompanies Him.

הִנֵּ֨ה אֲדֹנָ֤י יְהוִה֙ יָב֔וֹא בְּחָזָ֣ק וּזְרֹע֖וֹ מֹ֣שְׁלָה ל֑וֹ הִנֵּ֤ה שְׂכָרוֹ֙ אִתּ֔וֹ וּפְעֻלָּת֖וֹ לְפָנָֽיו׃ hin·nêh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh yā·ḇō·w bə·ḥā·zāq ū·zə·rō·‘ōw mō·šə·lāh lōw hin·nêh śə·ḵā·rōw ’it·tōw ū·p̄ə·‘ul·lā·ṯōw lə·p̄ā·nāw — WLC · 10

He tends His flock like a shepherd; He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart. He gently leads the nursing [ewes].

כְּרֹעֶה֙ עֶדְר֣וֹ יִרְעֶ֔ה יְקַבֵּ֣ץ טְלָאִ֔ים בִּזְרֹעוֹ֙ יִשָּׂ֑א וּבְחֵיק֖וֹ יְנַהֵֽל׃ס עָל֖וֹת kə·rō·‘eh ‘eḏ·rōw yir·‘eh yə·qab·bêṣ ṭə·lā·’îm biz·rō·‘ōw yiś·śā ū·ḇə·ḥê·qōw yə·na·hêl ‘ā·lō·wṯ — WLC · 11

Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or marked off the heavens with the span of his hand? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on a scale and the hills with a balance?

מִֽי־ מָדַ֨ד מַ֗יִם בְּשָׁעֳל֜וֹ תִּכֵּ֔ן וְשָׁמַ֙יִם֙ בַּזֶּ֣רֶת וְכָ֥ל עֲפַ֣ר הָאָ֑רֶץ בַּשָּׁלִ֖שׁ וְשָׁקַ֤ל הָרִ֔ים בַּפֶּ֙לֶס֙ וּגְבָע֖וֹת בְּמֹאזְנָֽיִם׃ mî- mā·ḏaḏ ma·yim bə·šā·‘o·lōw tik·kên wə·šā·ma·yim baz·ze·reṯ wə·ḵāl ‘ă·p̄ar hā·’ā·reṣ baš·šā·liš wə·šā·qal hā·rîm bap·pe·les ū·ḡə·ḇā·‘ō·wṯ bə·mō·zə·nā·yim — WLC · 12

Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD,… or informed Him [as] His counselor?

מִֽי־ תִכֵּ֥ן אֶת־ ר֖וּחַ יְהוָ֑ה וְאִ֥ישׁ יוֹדִיעֶֽנּוּ׃ עֲצָת֖וֹ mî- ṯik·kên ’eṯ- rū·aḥ Yah·weh wə·’îš yō·w·ḏî·‘en·nū ‘ă·ṣā·ṯōw — WLC · 13

Whom did He consult… to enlighten Him, and who taught Him the paths of justice? Who imparted knowledge to Him and showed Him the way of understanding?

מִ֤י נוֹעָץ֙ אֶת־ וַיְבִינֵ֔הוּ וַֽיְלַמְּדֵ֖הוּ בְּאֹ֣רַח מִשְׁפָּ֑ט וַיְלַמְּדֵ֣הוּ דַ֔עַת יוֹדִיעֶֽנּוּ׃ וְדֶ֥רֶךְ תְּבוּנ֖וֹת mî nō·w·‘āṣ ’eṯ- way·ḇî·nê·hū way·lam·mə·ḏê·hū bə·’ō·raḥ miš·pāṭ way·lam·mə·ḏê·hū ḏa·‘aṯ yō·w·ḏî·‘en·nū wə·ḏe·reḵ tə·ḇū·nō·wṯ — WLC · 14

Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are considered… a speck of dust on the scales; He lifts up the islands like fine dust.

הֵ֤ן גּוֹיִם֙ כְּמַ֣ר מִדְּלִ֔י נֶחְשָׁ֑בוּ הֵ֥ן וּכְשַׁ֥חַק מֹאזְנַ֖יִם יִטּֽוֹל׃ אִיִּ֖ים כַּדַּ֥ק hên gō·w·yim kə·mar mid·də·lî neḥ·šā·ḇū hên ū·ḵə·ša·ḥaq mō·zə·na·yim yiṭ·ṭō·wl ’î·yîm kad·daq — WLC · 15

Lebanon [is] not sufficient for fuel, nor its animals… enough for a burnt offering.

וּלְבָנ֕וֹן אֵ֥ין דֵּ֖י בָּעֵ֑ר וְחַיָּת֔וֹ אֵ֥ין דֵּ֖י עוֹלָֽה׃ס ū·lə·ḇā·nō·wn ’ên dê bā·‘êr wə·ḥay·yā·ṯōw ’ên dê ‘ō·w·lāh — WLC · 16

All the nations are as nothing before Him; He regards them as nothingness and emptiness.

כָּל־ הַגּוֹיִ֖ם כְּאַ֣יִן נֶגְדּ֑וֹ נֶחְשְׁבוּ־ לֽוֹ׃ מֵאֶ֥פֶס וָתֹ֖הוּ kāl- hag·gō·w·yim kə·’a·yin neḡ·dōw neḥ·šə·ḇū- lōw mê·’e·p̄es wā·ṯō·hū — WLC · 17

To whom will you liken God -? To what image will you compare Him?

To an idol that a craftsman casts and a metalworker overlays with gold and fits with silver chains?
𐤄𐤐𐤎𐤋 𐤇𐤓𐤔 𐤍𐤎𐤊 𐤅𐤑𐤓𐤐 𐤉𐤓𐤒𐤏𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤆𐤄𐤁 𐤑𐤅𐤓𐤐 𐤊𐤎𐤐 𐤅𐤓𐤕𐤒𐤅𐤕
הַפֶּ֙סֶל֙ חָרָ֔שׁ נָסַ֣ךְ וְצֹרֵ֖ף יְרַקְּעֶ֑נּוּ בַּזָּהָ֣ב צוֹרֵֽף׃ כֶּ֖סֶף וּרְתֻק֥וֹת hap·pe·sel ḥā·rāš nā·saḵ wə·ṣō·rêp̄ yə·raq·qə·‘en·nū baz·zā·hāḇ ṣō·w·rêp̄ ke·sep̄ ū·rə·ṯu·qō·wṯ — WLC · 19

One lacking such an offering chooses wood that will not rot. He seeks a skilled craftsman to set up an idol that will not topple.

הַֽמְסֻכָּ֣ן תְּרוּמָ֔ה יִבְחָ֑ר עֵ֥ץ לֹֽא־ יִרְקַ֖ב יְבַקֶּשׁ־ ל֔וֹ חָכָם֙ חָרָ֤שׁ לְהָכִ֥ין פֶּ֖סֶל לֹ֥א יִמּֽוֹט׃ ham·suk·kān tə·rū·māh yiḇ·ḥār ‘êṣ lō- yir·qaḇ yə·ḇaq·qeš- lōw ḥā·ḵām ḥā·rāš lə·hā·ḵîn pe·sel lō yim·mō·wṭ — WLC · 20

Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been declared to you from the beginning Have you not understood since the foundation of the earth?

הֲל֤וֹא תֵֽדְעוּ֙ הֲל֣וֹא תִשְׁמָ֔עוּ הֲל֛וֹא הֻגַּ֥ד מֵרֹ֖אשׁ לָכֶ֑ם הֲלוֹא֙ הֲבִ֣ינֹתֶ֔ם מוֹסְד֖וֹת הָאָֽרֶץ׃ hă·lō·w ṯê·ḏə·‘ū hă·lō·w ṯiš·mā·‘ū hă·lō·w hug·gaḏ mê·rōš lā·ḵem hă·lō·w hă·ḇî·nō·ṯem mō·ws·ḏō·wṯ hā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 21

He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth; its dwellers are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.

No sooner… are they planted, no sooner… are they sown, no sooner… have their stems taken root in the ground, than He blows on them and they wither, and a whirlwind sweeps them away like stubble.

“To whom will you liken Me, or who is My equal?” asks the Holy One.

Lift up your eyes on high -: Who created all these? He leads forth the starry host by number; He calls each one by name. Because of His great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.

Why do you say, O Jacob, and why do you assert, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the LORD, and my claim is ignored by my God”?

Do you not know?… Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired… or weary; His understanding is beyond searching out.

Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall.

But those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.
