Chapter 38
Hezekiah’s Illness and Recovery
1
In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came to him and said…, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Put your house in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover.’”

הָהֵ֔ם בַּיָּמִ֣ים חִזְקִיָּ֖הוּ לָמ֑וּת חָלָ֥ה הַנָּבִ֗יא יְשַׁעְיָ֨הוּ בֶן־ אָמ֜וֹץ וַיָּב֣וֹא אֵ֠לָיו וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֜יו כֹּֽה־ יְהוָה֙ אָמַ֤ר לְבֵיתֶ֔ךָ צַ֣ו כִּ֛י אַתָּ֖ה מֵ֥ת וְלֹ֥א תִֽחְיֶֽה׃ hā·hêm bay·yā·mîm ḥiz·qî·yā·hū lā·mūṯ ḥā·lāh han·nā·ḇî yə·ša‘·yā·hū ḇen- ’ā·mō·wṣ way·yā·ḇō·w ’ê·lāw way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw kōh- Yah·weh ’ā·mar lə·ḇê·ṯe·ḵā ṣaw kî ’at·tāh mêṯ wə·lō ṯiḥ·yeh — WLC · 1

Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD,
𐤇𐤆𐤒𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤁 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤒𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤐𐤋𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
חִזְקִיָּ֛הוּ וַיַּסֵּ֧ב פָּנָ֖יו אֶל־ הַקִּ֑יר וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֖ל אֶל־ יְהוָֽה׃ ḥiz·qî·yā·hū way·yas·sêḇ pā·nāw ’el- haq·qîr way·yiṯ·pal·lêl ’el- Yah·weh — WLC · 2

saying, “Please, O LORD, remember… how I have walked before You faithfully and with wholehearted devotion; I have done [what is] good in Your sight.” And Hezekiah… wept bitterly.

And the word of the LORD came to Isaiah, saying,

דְּבַר־ יְהוָ֔ה וַֽיְהִי֙ אֶֽל־ יְשַׁעְיָ֖הוּ לֵאמֹֽר׃ də·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’el- yə·ša‘·yā·hū lê·mōr — WLC · 4

“Go and tell… Hezekiah that this is what the LORD, the God of your father David, says: ‘I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Behold, I will add fifteen… years to your life.

הָל֞וֹךְ וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֶל־ חִזְקִיָּ֗הוּ כֹּֽה־ יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵי֙ אָבִ֔יךָ דָּוִ֣ד אָמַ֤ר שָׁמַ֙עְתִּי֙ אֶת־ תְּפִלָּתֶ֔ךָ רָאִ֖יתִי אֶת־ דִּמְעָתֶ֑ךָ הִנְנִי֙ יוֹסִ֣ף חֲמֵ֥שׁ עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה שָׁנָֽה׃ עַל־ יָמֶ֔יךָ hā·lō·wḵ wə·’ā·mar·tā ’el- ḥiz·qî·yā·hū kōh- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê ’ā·ḇî·ḵā dā·wiḏ ’ā·mar šā·ma‘·tî ’eṯ- tə·p̄il·lā·ṯe·ḵā rā·’î·ṯî ’eṯ- dim·‘ā·ṯe·ḵā hin·nî yō·w·sip̄ ḥă·mêš ‘eś·rêh šā·nāh ‘al- yā·me·ḵā — WLC · 5

And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend… this city.

אַצִּ֣ילְךָ֔ וְאֵ֖ת הַזֹּ֑את הָעִ֣יר וּמִכַּ֤ף מֶֽלֶךְ־ אַשּׁוּר֙ וְגַנּוֹתִ֖י עַל־ הַזֹּֽאת׃ הָעִ֥יר ’aṣ·ṣî·lə·ḵā wə·’êṯ haz·zōṯ hā·‘îr ū·mik·kap̄ me·leḵ- ’aš·šūr wə·ḡan·nō·w·ṯî ‘al- haz·zōṯ hā·‘îr — WLC · 6

This will be a sign to you from the LORD that He will do what… He has promised:
𐤅𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓
וְזֶה־ הָא֖וֹת לְּךָ֥ מֵאֵ֣ת יְהוָ֑ה אֲשֶׁר֙ יְהוָ֔ה אֶת־ יַעֲשֶׂ֣ה הַדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבֵּֽר׃ wə·zeh- hā·’ō·wṯ lə·ḵā mê·’êṯ Yah·weh ’ă·šer Yah·weh ’eṯ- ya·‘ă·śeh had·dā·ḇār haz·zeh ’ă·šer dib·bêr — WLC · 7

- I will make the sun’s shadow that falls on the stairway of Ahaz go back ten steps.’” So the sunlight went back the ten… steps it had descended.

מִכְתָּ֖ב לְחִזְקִיָּ֣הוּ מֶֽלֶךְ־ יְהוּדָ֑ה בַּחֲלֹת֕וֹ וַיְחִ֖י מֵחָלְיֽוֹ׃ miḵ·tāḇ lə·ḥiz·qî·yā·hū me·leḵ- yə·hū·ḏāh ba·ḥă·lō·ṯōw way·ḥî mê·ḥā·lə·yōw — WLC · 9

I said, “In the prime of my life I must go through the gates of Sheol [and] be deprived of the remainder of my years.”

I said, “I will never again see the LORD, [even] the LORD, in the land of the living; I will no longer look on mankind with those who dwell in this world.

My dwelling has been picked up and removed from me like a shepherd’s tent. I have rolled up my life like a weaver; He cuts me off from the loom; from day until night You make an end of me.

I composed myself until the morning. Like a lion… He breaks all my bones; from day until night You make an end of me.

שִׁוִּ֤יתִי עַד־ בֹּ֙קֶר֙ כָּֽאֲרִ֔י כֵּ֥ן יְשַׁבֵּ֖ר כָּל־ עַצְמוֹתָ֑י מִיּ֥וֹם עַד־ לַ֖יְלָה תַּשְׁלִימֵֽנִי׃ šiw·wî·ṯî ‘aḏ- bō·qer kā·’ă·rî kên yə·šab·bêr kāl- ‘aṣ·mō·w·ṯāy mî·yō·wm ‘aḏ- lay·lāh taš·lî·mê·nî — WLC · 13

I chirp like a swallow or crane…; I moan like a dove. My eyes grow weak [as I look] upward. O Lord, I am oppressed be my security.”

What can I say? He has spoken to me, and He Himself has done this. I will walk slowly all my years because of the anguish of my soul.

מָֽה־ אֲדַבֵּ֥ר וְאָֽמַר־ לִ֖י וְה֣וּא עָשָׂ֑ה אֶדַּדֶּ֥ה כָל־ שְׁנוֹתַ֖י עַל־ מַ֥ר נַפְשִֽׁי׃ māh- ’ă·ḏab·bêr wə·’ā·mar- lî wə·hū ‘ā·śāh ’ed·dad·deh ḵāl šə·nō·w·ṯay ‘al- mar nap̄·šî — WLC · 15

O Lord, by [such things] men live, and in all [of them] my spirit [finds] life. You have restored me to health and have let me live.

Surely for my own welfare I had such great anguish; but Your love has delivered me from the pit of oblivion, for You have cast all my sins behind Your back.

For Sheol cannot thank You; Death cannot praise You. Those who descend to the Pit cannot hope for Your faithfulness.

כִּ֣י שְׁא֛וֹל לֹ֥א תּוֹדֶ֖ךָּ מָ֣וֶת יְהַלְלֶ֑ךָּ יֽוֹרְדֵי־ ב֖וֹר לֹֽא־ יְשַׂבְּר֥וּ אֶל־ אֲמִתֶּֽךָ׃ kî šə·’ō·wl lō tō·w·ḏe·kā mā·weṯ yə·hal·le·kā yō·wr·ḏê- ḇō·wr lō- yə·śab·bə·rū ’el- ’ă·mit·te·ḵā — WLC · 18

The living, only the living,… can thank You, as I do today…; fathers will tell their children about Your faithfulness.
