Chapter 3

Judgment on Jerusalem and Judah

1

For behold, the Lord GOD of Hosts is about to remove from Jerusalem and Judah both supply and support: the whole supply of food… and water,

𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤅𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤎𐤉𐤓 𐤌𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤏𐤍 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤏𐤍𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤏𐤍 𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤏𐤍 𐤌𐤉𐤌

כִּי֩ הִנֵּ֨ה הָאָד֜וֹן יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֗וֹת מֵסִ֤יר מִירוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ וּמִ֣יהוּדָ֔ה מַשְׁעֵ֖ן וּמַשְׁעֵנָ֑ה כֹּ֚ל מִשְׁעַן־ לֶ֔חֶם וְכֹ֖ל מִשְׁעַן־ מָֽיִם׃ kî hin·nêh hā·’ā·ḏō·wn Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ mê·sîr mî·rū·šā·lim ū·mî·hū·ḏāh maš·‘ên ū·maš·‘ê·nāh kōl miš·‘an- le·ḥem wə·ḵōl miš·‘an- mā·yimWLC · 1

the mighty man and the warrior…, the judge and the prophet, the soothsayer and the elder,

𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤄 𐤔𐤅𐤐𐤈 𐤅𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤅𐤒𐤎𐤌 𐤅𐤆𐤒𐤍

גִּבּ֖וֹר וְאִ֣ישׁ מִלְחָמָ֑ה שׁוֹפֵ֥ט וְנָבִ֖יא וְקֹסֵ֥ם וְזָקֵֽן׃ gib·bō·wr wə·’îš mil·ḥā·māh šō·w·p̄êṭ wə·nā·ḇî wə·qō·sêm wə·zā·qênWLC · 2

the commander of fifty and the dignitary…, the counselor, the cunning magician, and the clever enchanter.

𐤔𐤓 𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤅𐤀 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤏𐤑 𐤅𐤇𐤊𐤌 𐤇𐤓𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤁𐤅𐤍 𐤋𐤇𐤔

שַׂר־ חֲמִשִּׁ֖ים וּנְשׂ֣וּא פָנִ֑ים וְיוֹעֵ֛ץ וַחֲכַ֥ם חֲרָשִׁ֖ים וּנְב֥וֹן לָֽחַשׁ׃ śar- ḥă·miš·šîm ū·nə·śū p̄ā·nîm wə·yō·w·‘êṣ wa·ḥă·ḵam ḥă·rā·šîm ū·nə·ḇō·wn lā·ḥašWLC · 3

“I will make mere lads their leaders, and children will rule over them.”

𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤍𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤌𐤔𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤌

וְנָתַתִּ֥י נְעָרִ֖ים שָׂרֵיהֶ֑ם וְתַעֲלוּלִ֖ים יִמְשְׁלוּ־ בָֽם׃ wə·nā·ṯat·tî nə·‘ā·rîm śā·rê·hem wə·ṯa·‘ă·lū·lîm yim·šə·lū- ḇāmWLC · 4

The people will oppress one another, man against man, neighbor against neighbor; the young will rise up against the old, and the base against the honorable.

𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤂𐤔 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤁𐤓𐤏𐤄𐤅 𐤄𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤉𐤓𐤄𐤁𐤅 𐤁𐤆𐤒𐤍 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤒𐤋𐤄 𐤁𐤍𐤊𐤁𐤃

הָעָ֔ם וְנִגַּ֣שׂ אִ֥ישׁ בְּאִ֖ישׁ וְאִ֣ישׁ בְּרֵעֵ֑הוּ הַנַּ֙עַר֙ יִרְהֲב֗וּ בַּזָּקֵ֔ן וְהַנִּקְלֶ֖ה בַּנִּכְבָּֽד׃ hā·‘ām wə·nig·gaś ’îš bə·’îš wə·’îš bə·rê·‘ê·hū han·na·‘ar yir·hă·ḇū baz·zā·qên wə·han·niq·leh ban·niḵ·bāḏWLC · 5

A man will seize his brother within his father’s house: “You have a cloak—… you be our leader! vvv Take charge of this heap of rubble.”

𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤕𐤐𐤔 𐤁𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤔𐤌𐤋𐤄 𐤋𐤊𐤄 𐤕𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤒𐤑𐤉𐤍 𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤉𐤃𐤊 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤊𐤔𐤋𐤄

אִ֤ישׁ כִּֽי־ יִתְפֹּ֨שׂ בְּאָחִיו֙ אָבִ֔יו בֵּ֣ית שִׂמְלָ֣ה לְכָ֔ה תִּֽהְיֶה־ לָּ֑נוּ קָצִ֖ין תַּ֥חַת יָדֶֽךָ׃ הַזֹּ֖את וְהַמַּכְשֵׁלָ֥ה ’îš kî- yiṯ·pōś bə·’ā·ḥîw ’ā·ḇîw bêṯ śim·lāh lə·ḵāh tih·yeh- lā·nū qā·ṣîn ta·ḥaṯ yā·ḏe·ḵā haz·zōṯ wə·ham·maḵ·šê·lāhWLC · 6

On that day he will cry aloud -: “I am not a healer. I have no food… or clothing in my house. Do not make me leader of the people!”

הַה֤וּא׀ בַיּ֨וֹם יִשָּׂא֩ לֵאמֹר֙ אֶהְיֶ֣ה לֹא־ חֹבֵ֔שׁ אֵ֥ין לֶ֖חֶם וְאֵ֣ין שִׂמְלָ֑ה וּבְבֵיתִ֕י לֹ֥א תְשִׂימֻ֖נִי קְצִ֥ין עָֽם׃ ha·hū ḇay·yō·wm yiś·śā lê·mōr ’eh·yeh lō- ḥō·ḇêš ’ên le·ḥem wə·’ên śim·lāh ū·ḇə·ḇê·ṯî lō ṯə·śî·mu·nî qə·ṣîn ‘āmWLC · 7

For Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen because they spoke and acted against the LORD, defying His glorious presence.

𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤊𐤔𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤍𐤐𐤋 𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤍𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤃𐤅 𐤏𐤍𐤉

כִּ֤י יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם כָשְׁלָה֙ וִיהוּדָ֖ה נָפָ֑ל כִּֽי־ לְשׁוֹנָ֤ם וּמַֽעַלְלֵיהֶם֙ אֶל־ יְהוָ֔ה לַמְר֖וֹת כְבוֹדֽוֹ׃ עֵנֵ֥י kî yə·rū·šā·lim ḵā·šə·lāh wî·hū·ḏāh nā·p̄āl kî- lə·šō·w·nām ū·ma·‘al·lê·hem ’el- Yah·weh lam·rō·wṯ ḵə·ḇō·w·ḏōw ‘ê·nêWLC · 8

The expression on their faces testifies against them, and like Sodom they flaunt their sin; they do not conceal it. Woe to them, for they have brought disaster upon themselves.

𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤕 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤏𐤍𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤌 𐤊𐤎𐤃𐤌 𐤄𐤂𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤅𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤊𐤇𐤃𐤅 𐤀𐤅𐤉 𐤋𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤂𐤌𐤋𐤅 𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤋𐤄𐤌

הַכָּרַ֤ת פְּנֵיהֶם֙ עָ֣נְתָה בָּ֔ם כִּסְדֹ֥ם הִגִּ֖ידוּ וְחַטָּאתָ֛ם לֹ֣א כִחֵ֑דוּ א֣וֹי לְנַפְשָׁ֔ם כִּֽי־ גָמְל֥וּ רָעָֽה׃ לָהֶ֖ם hak·kā·raṯ pə·nê·hem ‘ā·nə·ṯāh bām kis·ḏōm hig·gî·ḏū wə·ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯām lō ḵi·ḥê·ḏū ’ō·w lə·nap̄·šām kî- ḡā·mə·lū rā·‘āh lā·hemWLC · 9

Tell the righteous it will be well with them, for they will enjoy the fruit of their labor.

𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤊𐤉 𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤐𐤓𐤉 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌

אִמְר֥וּ צַדִּ֖יק כִּי־ ט֑וֹב כִּֽי־ יֹאכֵֽלוּ׃ פְרִ֥י מַעַלְלֵיהֶ֖ם ’im·rū ṣad·dîq kî- ṭō·wḇ kî- yō·ḵê·lū p̄ə·rî ma·‘al·lê·hemWLC · 10

Woe to the wicked; disaster [is upon them]! For they will be repaid with what their hands have done

𐤀𐤅𐤉 𐤋𐤓𐤔𐤏 𐤓𐤏 𐤊𐤉 𐤂𐤌𐤅𐤋 𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤅

א֖וֹי לְרָשָׁ֣ע רָ֑ע כִּֽי־ גְמ֥וּל יָדָ֖יו יֵעָ֥שֶׂה לּֽוֹ׃ ’ō·w lə·rā·šā‘ rā‘ kî- ḡə·mūl yā·ḏāw yê·‘ā·śeh lōwWLC · 11

12

Youths oppress My people, and women rule over them. O My people, your guides mislead you; they turn you… from your paths.

𐤌𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤋 𐤍𐤂𐤔𐤉𐤅 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤔𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤅 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤌𐤀𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤕𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤋𐤏𐤅𐤎 𐤅𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤀𐤓𐤇𐤕𐤉𐤊

מְעוֹלֵ֔ל נֹגְשָׂ֣יו עַמִּי֙ וְנָשִׁ֖ים מָ֣שְׁלוּ ב֑וֹ עַמִּי֙ מְאַשְּׁרֶ֣יךָ מַתְעִ֔ים בִּלֵּֽעוּ׃ס וְדֶ֥רֶךְ אֹֽרְחֹתֶ֖יךָ mə·‘ō·w·lêl nō·ḡə·śāw ‘am·mî wə·nā·šîm mā·šə·lū ḇōw ‘am·mî mə·’aš·šə·re·ḵā maṯ·‘îm bil·lê·‘ū wə·ḏe·reḵ ’ō·rə·ḥō·ṯe·ḵāWLC · 12

The LORD arises to contend; He stands to judge the people.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤍𐤑𐤁 𐤋𐤓𐤉𐤁 𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤋𐤃𐤉𐤍 𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌

יְהוָ֑ה נִצָּ֥ב לָרִ֖יב וְעֹמֵ֖ד לָדִ֥ין עַמִּֽים׃ Yah·weh niṣ·ṣāḇ lā·rîḇ wə·‘ō·mêḏ lā·ḏîn ‘am·mîmWLC · 13

The LORD brings this charge against the elders and leaders of His people: “You have devoured the vineyard; the plunder of the poor is in your houses.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤏𐤌 𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤏𐤓𐤕𐤌 𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤌 𐤂𐤆𐤋𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌

יְהוָה֙ יָב֔וֹא בְּמִשְׁפָּ֣ט עִם־ זִקְנֵ֥י וְשָׂרָ֑יו עַמּ֖וֹ וְאַתֶּם֙ בִּֽעַרְתֶּ֣ם הַכֶּ֔רֶם גְּזֵלַ֥ת הֶֽעָנִ֖י בְּבָתֵּיכֶֽם׃ Yah·weh yā·ḇō·w bə·miš·pāṭ ‘im- ziq·nê wə·śā·rāw ‘am·mōw wə·’at·tem bi·‘ar·tem hak·ke·rem gə·zê·laṯ he·‘ā·nî bə·ḇāt·tê·ḵemWLC · 14

Why do you crush My people and grind the faces of the poor?” declares the Lord GOD of Hosts.

𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤕𐤃𐤊𐤀𐤅 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤕𐤈𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤍𐤉𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤎

מַלָּכֶם תְּדַכְּא֣וּ עַמִּ֔י תִּטְחָ֑נוּ וּפְנֵ֥י עֲנִיִּ֖ים נְאֻם־ אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִ֖ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃ס mal·lå̄·ḵɛm tə·ḏak·kə·’ū ‘am·mî tiṭ·ḥā·nū ū·p̄ə·nê ‘ă·nî·yîm nə·’um- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯWLC · 15

A Warning to the Daughters of Zion

The LORD also says: “Because… the daughters of Zion are haughty— walking with heads held high and wanton eyes, prancing and skipping as they go, jingling the bracelets on their ankles—

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤑𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤂𐤁𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤕𐤋𐤊𐤍𐤄 𐤂𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤍𐤈𐤅𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤒𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤊 𐤅𐤈𐤐𐤐 𐤕𐤋𐤊𐤍𐤄 𐤕𐤏𐤊𐤎𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌

יְהוָ֗ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יַ֚עַן כִּ֤י בְּנ֣וֹת צִיּ֔וֹן גָֽבְהוּ֙ וַתֵּלַ֙כְנָה֙ גָּר֔וֹן נְטוּוֹת וּֽמְשַׂקְּר֖וֹת עֵינָ֑יִם הָל֤וֹךְ וְטָפֹף֙ תֵּלַ֔כְנָה תְּעַכַּֽסְנָה׃ וּבְרַגְלֵיהֶ֖ם Yah·weh way·yō·mer ya·‘an kî bə·nō·wṯ ṣî·yō·wn ḡā·ḇə·hū wat·tê·laḵ·nāh gā·rō·wn nə·ṭūōṯ ū·mə·śaq·qə·rō·wṯ ‘ê·nā·yim hā·lō·wḵ wə·ṭā·p̄ōp̄ tê·laḵ·nāh tə·‘ak·kas·nāh ū·ḇə·raḡ·lê·hemWLC · 16

the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will make their foreheads bare.

𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤔𐤐𐤇 𐤒𐤃𐤒𐤃 𐤁𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤑𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤐𐤕𐤄𐤍 𐤉𐤏𐤓𐤄𐤎

אֲדֹנָ֔י וְשִׂפַּ֣ח קָדְקֹ֖ד בְּנ֣וֹת צִיּ֑וֹן וַיהוָ֖ה פָּתְהֵ֥ן יְעָרֶֽה׃ס ’ă·ḏō·nāy wə·śip·paḥ qā·ḏə·qōḏ bə·nō·wṯ ṣî·yō·wn Yah·weh pā·ṯə·hên yə·‘ā·rehWLC · 17

18

In that day the Lord will take away their finery: [their] anklets and headbands and crescents;

𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤎𐤉𐤓 𐤕𐤐𐤀𐤓𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤊𐤎𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤎𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤄𐤓𐤍𐤉𐤌

הַה֜וּא בַּיּ֨וֹם אֲדֹנָ֗י אֵ֣ת יָסִ֣יר תִּפְאֶ֧רֶת הָעֲכָסִ֛ים וְהַשְּׁבִיסִ֖ים וְהַשַּׂהֲרֹנִֽים׃ ha·hū bay·yō·wm ’ă·ḏō·nāy ’êṯ yā·sîr tip̄·’e·reṯ hā·‘ă·ḵā·sîm wə·haš·šə·ḇî·sîm wə·haś·śa·hă·rō·nîmWLC · 18

[their] pendants, bracelets, and veils;

𐤄𐤍𐤈𐤉𐤐𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕

הַנְּטִיפ֥וֹת וְהַשֵּׁיר֖וֹת וְהָֽרְעָלֽוֹת׃ han·nə·ṭî·p̄ō·wṯ wə·haš·šê·rō·wṯ wə·hā·rə·‘ā·lō·wṯWLC · 19

20

[their] headdresses, ankle chains, and sashes; [their] perfume bottles and charms;

𐤄𐤐𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤑𐤏𐤃𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤍𐤐𐤔 𐤅𐤁𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤋𐤇𐤔𐤉𐤌

הַפְּאֵרִ֤ים וְהַצְּעָדוֹת֙ וְהַקִּשֻּׁרִ֔ים הַנֶּ֖פֶשׁ וּבָתֵּ֥י וְהַלְּחָשִֽׁים׃ hap·pə·’ê·rîm wə·haṣ·ṣə·‘ā·ḏō·wṯ wə·haq·qiš·šu·rîm han·ne·p̄eš ū·ḇāt·tê wə·hal·lə·ḥā·šîmWLC · 20

21

[their] signet rings and nose rings;

𐤄𐤈𐤁𐤏𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤐 𐤅𐤍𐤆𐤌𐤉

הַטַּבָּע֖וֹת הָאָֽף׃ וְנִזְמֵ֥י haṭ·ṭab·bā·‘ō·wṯ hā·’āp̄ wə·niz·mêWLC · 21

22

[their] festive robes, capes, cloaks, and purses;

𐤄𐤌𐤇𐤋𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤏𐤈𐤐𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤈𐤐𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤈𐤉𐤌

הַמַּֽחֲלָצוֹת֙ וְהַמַּ֣עֲטָפ֔וֹת וְהַמִּטְפָּח֖וֹת וְהָחֲרִיטִֽים׃ ham·ma·ḥă·lā·ṣō·wṯ wə·ham·ma·‘ă·ṭā·p̄ō·wṯ wə·ham·miṭ·pā·ḥō·wṯ wə·hā·ḥă·rî·ṭîmWLC · 22

23

and [their] mirrors, linen garments, tiaras, and shawls.

𐤅𐤄𐤂𐤋𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤎𐤃𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤑𐤍𐤉𐤐𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤓𐤃𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤌

וְהַגִּלְיֹנִים֙ וְהַסְּדִינִ֔ים וְהַצְּנִיפ֖וֹת וְהָרְדִידִֽים׃ wə·hag·gil·yō·nîm wə·has·sə·ḏî·nîm wə·haṣ·ṣə·nî·p̄ō·wṯ wə·hā·rə·ḏî·ḏîmWLC · 23

Instead of fragrance there will be a stench;… instead of a belt, a rope; instead of styled hair, baldness; instead of fine clothing, sackcloth…; instead of beauty, shame.

תַ֨חַת בֹּ֜שֶׂם וְהָיָה֩ מַ֣ק יִֽהְיֶ֗ה וְתַ֨חַת חֲגוֹרָ֤ה נִקְפָּה֙ וְתַ֨חַת מַעֲשֶׂ֤ה מִקְשֶׁה֙ קָרְחָ֔ה וְתַ֥חַת פְּתִיגִ֖יל מַחֲגֹ֣רֶת שָׂ֑ק תַ֖חַת יֹֽפִי׃ כִּי־ ṯa·ḥaṯ bō·śem wə·hā·yāh maq yih·yeh wə·ṯa·ḥaṯ ḥă·ḡō·w·rāh niq·pāh wə·ṯa·ḥaṯ ma·‘ă·śeh miq·šeh qā·rə·ḥāh wə·ṯa·ḥaṯ pə·ṯî·ḡîl ma·ḥă·ḡō·reṯ śāq ṯa·ḥaṯ yō·p̄î kî-WLC · 24

Your men will fall by the sword, and your warriors in battle.

And the gates [of Zion] will lament and mourn; destitute, she will sit on the ground.
