Chapter 29
Woe to David’s City
1
Woe to you, O Ariel, the city [of] Ariel where David… camped! Year upon year let your festivals recur.
𐤄𐤅𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤀𐤋 𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤀𐤋 𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤎𐤐𐤅 𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤇𐤂𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤍𐤒𐤐𐤅
ה֚וֹי אֲרִיאֵ֣ל קִרְיַ֖ת אֲרִיאֵ֔ל דָוִ֑ד סְפ֥וּ חָנָ֣ה שָׁנָ֛ה עַל־ שָׁנָ֖ה חַגִּ֥ים יִנְקֹֽפוּ׃ hō·w ’ă·rî·’êl qir·yaṯ ’ă·rî·’êl ḏā·wiḏ sə·p̄ū ḥā·nāh šā·nāh ‘al- šā·nāh ḥag·gîm yin·qō·p̄ū — WLC · 1

And I will constrain Ariel, and there will be mourning and lamentation; she will be like an altar hearth before Me.

וַהֲצִיק֖וֹתִי לַֽאֲרִיאֵ֑ל וְהָיְתָ֤ה תַֽאֲנִיָּה֙ וַֽאֲנִיָּ֔ה וְהָ֥יְתָה כַּאֲרִיאֵֽל׃ לִּ֖י wa·hă·ṣî·qō·w·ṯî la·’ă·rî·’êl wə·hā·yə·ṯāh ṯa·’ă·nî·yāh wa·’ă·nî·yāh wə·hā·yə·ṯāh ka·’ă·rî·’êl lî — WLC · 2

I will camp in a circle around you; I will besiege you with towers and set up siege works against you.

וְחָנִ֥יתִי כַדּ֖וּר עָלָ֑יִךְ וְצַרְתִּ֤י עָלַ֙יִךְ֙ מֻצָּ֔ב וַהֲקִֽימֹתִ֥י מְצֻרֹֽת׃ עָלַ֖יִךְ wə·ḥā·nî·ṯî ḵad·dūr ‘ā·lā·yiḵ wə·ṣar·tî ‘ā·la·yiḵ muṣ·ṣāḇ wa·hă·qî·mō·ṯî mə·ṣu·rōṯ ‘ā·la·yiḵ — WLC · 3

You will be brought low, you will speak from the ground, and out of the dust your words will be muffled. Your voice will be like a spirit from the ground; your speech will whisper out of the dust.

וְשָׁפַלְתְּ֙ תְּדַבֵּ֔רִי מֵאֶ֣רֶץ וּמֵֽעָפָ֖ר אִמְרָתֵ֑ךְ תִּשַּׁ֣ח קוֹלֵ֔ךְ וְֽ֠הָיָה כְּא֤וֹב מֵאֶ֙רֶץ֙ אִמְרָתֵ֥ךְ תְּצַפְצֵֽף׃ וּמֵעָפָ֖ר wə·šā·p̄alt tə·ḏab·bê·rî mê·’e·reṣ ū·mê·‘ā·p̄ār ’im·rā·ṯêḵ tiš·šaḥ qō·w·lêḵ wə·hā·yāh kə·’ō·wḇ mê·’e·reṣ ’im·rā·ṯêḵ tə·ṣap̄·ṣêp̄ ū·mê·‘ā·p̄ār — WLC · 4

But your many foes will be like fine dust, the multitude of the ruthless… like blowing chaff. Then suddenly, in an instant,
𐤄𐤌𐤅𐤍 𐤆𐤓𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤃𐤒 𐤊𐤀𐤁𐤒 𐤄𐤌𐤅𐤍 𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤑𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤊𐤌𐤑 𐤐𐤕𐤀𐤌 𐤋𐤐𐤕𐤏
הֲמ֣וֹן זָרָ֑יִךְ וְהָיָ֛ה דַּ֖ק כְּאָבָ֥ק הֲמ֣וֹן עָֽרִיצִ֔ים וְהָיָ֖ה עֹבֵר֙ וּכְמֹ֤ץ פִּתְאֹֽם׃ לְפֶ֥תַע hă·mō·wn zā·rā·yiḵ wə·hā·yāh daq kə·’ā·ḇāq hă·mō·wn ‘ā·rî·ṣîm wə·hā·yāh ‘ō·ḇêr ū·ḵə·mōṣ piṯ·’ōm lə·p̄e·ṯa‘ — WLC · 5

you will be visited by the LORD of Hosts with thunder and earthquake and loud noise, with windstorm and tempest and consuming flame of fire.
𐤕𐤐𐤒𐤃 𐤌𐤏𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤓𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤓𐤏𐤔 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤎𐤅𐤐𐤄 𐤅𐤎𐤏𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤅𐤊𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤄𐤁 𐤀𐤔
תִּפָּקֵ֔ד מֵעִ֨ם יְהוָ֤ה צְבָאוֹת֙ בְּרַ֥עַם וּבְרַ֖עַשׁ גָּד֑וֹל וְק֣וֹל סוּפָה֙ וּסְעָרָ֔ה אוֹכֵלָֽה׃ וְלַ֖הַב אֵ֥שׁ tip·pā·qêḏ mê·‘im Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ bə·ra·‘am ū·ḇə·ra·‘aš gā·ḏō·wl wə·qō·wl sū·p̄āh ū·sə·‘ā·rāh ’ō·w·ḵê·lāh wə·la·haḇ ’êš — WLC · 6

All the many nations going out to battle against Ariel— even all who war against her, laying siege and attacking her— will be like a dream, like a vision in the night,
𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤑𐤁𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤑𐤃𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤑𐤉𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤇𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤇𐤆𐤅𐤍 𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄
כָּל־ הֲמוֹן֙ הַגּוֹיִ֔ם הַצֹּבְאִ֖ים עַל־ אֲרִיאֵ֑ל וְכָל־ צֹבֶ֙יהָ֙ וּמְצֹ֣דָתָ֔הּ וְהַמְּצִיקִ֖ים לָֽהּ׃ וְהָיָ֗ה כַּֽחֲלוֹם֙ חֲז֣וֹן לַ֔יְלָה kāl- hă·mō·wn hag·gō·w·yim haṣ·ṣō·ḇə·’îm ‘al- ’ă·rî·’êl wə·ḵāl ṣō·ḇe·hā ū·mə·ṣō·ḏā·ṯāh wə·ham·mə·ṣî·qîm lāh wə·hā·yāh ka·ḥă·lō·wm ḥă·zō·wn lay·lāh — WLC · 7

- as when a hungry man… dreams he is eating, then awakens still hungry…; as when a thirsty man… dreams he is drinking, then awakens… faint… and parched. So will it be for all the many nations who go to battle against Mount Zion.
𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤁 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤇𐤋𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤉𐤑 𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤒𐤄 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤅 𐤅𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤑𐤌𐤀 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤇𐤋𐤌 𐤔𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤉𐤑 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤉𐤐 𐤅𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤅 𐤔𐤅𐤒𐤒𐤄 𐤊𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤓 𐤑𐤉𐤅𐤍𐤎
וְהָיָ֡ה כַּאֲשֶׁר֩ הָרָעֵ֜ב וְהִנֵּ֣ה יַחֲלֹ֨ם אוֹכֵ֗ל וְהֵקִיץ֮ וְרֵיקָ֣ה נַפְשׁוֹ֒ וְכַאֲשֶׁ֨ר הַצָּמֵא֙ וְהִנֵּ֣ה יַחֲלֹ֤ם שֹׁתֶ֔ה וְהֵקִיץ֙ וְהִנֵּ֣ה עָיֵ֔ף וְנַפְשׁ֖וֹ שׁוֹקֵקָ֑ה כֵּ֣ן יִֽהְיֶ֗ה כָּל־ הֲמוֹן֙ הַגּוֹיִ֔ם הַצֹּבְאִ֖ים עַל־ הַ֥ר צִיּֽוֹן׃ס wə·hā·yāh ka·’ă·šer hā·rā·‘êḇ wə·hin·nêh ya·ḥă·lōm ’ō·w·ḵêl wə·hê·qîṣ wə·rê·qāh nap̄·šōw wə·ḵa·’ă·šer haṣ·ṣā·mê wə·hin·nêh ya·ḥă·lōm šō·ṯeh wə·hê·qîṣ wə·hin·nêh ‘ā·yêp̄ wə·nap̄·šōw šō·w·qê·qāh kên yih·yeh kāl- hă·mō·wn hag·gō·w·yim haṣ·ṣō·ḇə·’îm ‘al- har ṣî·yō·wn — WLC · 8

Stop and be astonished; blind yourselves and be sightless; be drunk, but not with wine; stagger, but not from strong drink.
𐤄𐤕𐤌𐤄𐤌𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤕𐤌𐤄𐤅 𐤄𐤔𐤕𐤏𐤔𐤏𐤅 𐤅𐤔𐤏𐤅 𐤔𐤊𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤉𐤍 𐤍𐤏𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤊𐤓
הִתְמַהְמְה֣וּ וּתְמָ֔הוּ הִשְׁתַּֽעַשְׁע֖וּ וָשֹׁ֑עוּ שָֽׁכְר֣וּ וְלֹא־ יַ֔יִן נָע֖וּ וְלֹ֥א שֵׁכָֽר׃ hiṯ·mah·mə·hū ū·ṯə·mā·hū hiš·ta·‘aš·‘ū wā·šō·‘ū šā·ḵə·rū wə·lō- ya·yin nā·‘ū wə·lō šê·ḵār — WLC · 9

For the LORD has poured out on you a spirit of deep sleep. He has shut your eyes, O prophets; He has covered your heads, O seers.
𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤍𐤎𐤊 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤕𐤓𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤑𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤎𐤄 𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤄𐤇𐤆𐤉𐤌
כִּֽי־ יְהוָה֙ נָסַ֨ךְ עֲלֵיכֶ֤ם ר֣וּחַ תַּרְדֵּמָ֔ה וַיְעַצֵּ֖ם אֶת־ עֵֽינֵיכֶ֑ם אֶת־ הַנְּבִיאִ֛ים וְאֶת־ כִּסָּֽה׃ רָאשֵׁיכֶ֥ם הַחֹזִ֖ים kî- Yah·weh nā·saḵ ‘ă·lê·ḵem rū·aḥ tar·dê·māh way·‘aṣ·ṣêm ’eṯ- ‘ê·nê·ḵem ’eṯ- han·nə·ḇî·’îm wə·’eṯ- kis·sāh rā·šê·ḵem ha·ḥō·zîm — WLC · 10

And the entire vision will be to you like the words sealed in a scroll. If it is handed to someone to read…, he will say, “I cannot,… because it is sealed.”
𐤄𐤊𐤋 𐤇𐤆𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤉 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤊𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤇𐤕𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤅𐤃𐤏 𐤄𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤍𐤀 𐤆𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤇𐤕𐤅𐤌
הַכֹּ֗ל חָז֣וּת וַתְּהִ֨י לָכֶ֜ם כְּדִבְרֵי֮ הֶֽחָתוּם֒ הַסֵּ֣פֶר אֲשֶֽׁר־ יִתְּנ֣וּ אֹת֗וֹ אֶל־ יוֹדֵ֥עַ הַסֵּפֶר לֵאמֹ֖ר קְרָ֣א נָא־ זֶ֑ה וְאָמַר֙ לֹ֣א אוּכַ֔ל כִּ֥י הֽוּא׃ חָת֖וּם hak·kōl ḥā·zūṯ wat·tə·hî lā·ḵem kə·ḏiḇ·rê he·ḥā·ṯūm has·sê·p̄er ’ă·šer- yit·tə·nū ’ō·ṯōw ’el- yō·w·ḏê·a‘ has·sē·p̄ɛr lê·mōr qə·rā nā- zeh wə·’ā·mar lō ’ū·ḵal kî hū ḥā·ṯūm — WLC · 11

Or if the scroll is handed to one unable to read…, he will say, “I cannot read…”
𐤄𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤍𐤀 𐤆𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤉 𐤎𐤐𐤓𐤎
הַסֵּ֗פֶר וְנִתַּ֣ן עַל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר לֹֽא־ יָדַ֥ע סֵ֛פֶר לֵאמֹ֖ר קְרָ֣א נָא־ זֶ֑ה וְאָמַ֕ר לֹ֥א יָדַ֖עְתִּי סֵֽפֶר׃ס has·sê·p̄er wə·nit·tan ‘al ’ă·šer lō- yā·ḏa‘ sê·p̄er lê·mōr qə·rā nā- zeh wə·’ā·mar lō yā·ḏa‘·tî sê·p̄er — WLC · 12

Therefore… the Lord said: “These people draw near to Me with their mouths and honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. Their worship of Me is but rules taught by men.
𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤍𐤂𐤔 𐤁𐤐𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤁𐤃𐤅𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤁𐤔𐤐𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤁𐤅 𐤓𐤇𐤒 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤉 𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤋𐤌𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌
יַ֚עַן כִּ֤י אֲדֹנָ֗י וַיֹּ֣אמֶר הַזֶּ֔ה הָעָ֣ם נִגַּשׁ֙ בְּפִ֤יו כִּבְּד֔וּנִי וּבִשְׂפָתָיו֙ וְלִבּ֖וֹ רִחַ֣ק מִמֶּ֑נִּי יִרְאָתָם֙ אֹתִ֔י וַתְּהִ֤י מִצְוַ֥ת מְלֻמָּדָֽה׃ אֲנָשִׁ֖ים ya·‘an kî ’ă·ḏō·nāy way·yō·mer haz·zeh hā·‘ām nig·gaš bə·p̄îw kib·bə·ḏū·nî ū·ḇiś·p̄ā·ṯāw wə·lib·bōw ri·ḥaq mim·men·nî yir·’ā·ṯām ’ō·ṯî wat·tə·hî miṣ·waṯ mə·lum·mā·ḏāh ’ă·nā·šîm — WLC · 13

Therefore… I will again confound these people with wonder upon wonder. The wisdom of the wise will vanish, and the intelligence of the intelligent will be hidden.

לָכֵ֗ן הִנְנִ֥י יוֹסִ֛ף לְהַפְלִ֥יא אֶת־ הַזֶּ֖ה הָֽעָם־ הַפְלֵ֣א וָפֶ֑לֶא חָכְמַ֣ת חֲכָמָ֔יו וְאָֽבְדָה֙ וּבִינַ֥ת נְבֹנָ֖יו תִּסְתַּתָּֽר׃ס lā·ḵên hin·nî yō·w·sip̄ lə·hap̄·lî ’eṯ- haz·zeh hā·‘ām- hap̄·lê wā·p̄e·le ḥā·ḵə·maṯ ḥă·ḵā·māw wə·’ā·ḇə·ḏāh ū·ḇî·naṯ nə·ḇō·nāw tis·tat·tār — WLC · 14

Woe to those who dig deep to hide their plans… from the LORD. In darkness they do their works and say, “Who sees us, and who will know?”
𐤄𐤅𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤎𐤕𐤓 𐤏𐤑𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤌𐤇𐤔𐤊 𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤌𐤉 𐤓𐤀𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤅𐤃𐤏𐤍𐤅
ה֛וֹי הַמַּעֲמִיקִ֥ים לַסְתִּ֣ר עֵצָ֑ה וְהָיָ֤ה מֵֽיהוָ֖ה בְמַחְשָׁךְ֙ מַֽעֲשֵׂיהֶ֔ם וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ מִ֥י רֹאֵ֖נוּ וּמִ֥י יוֹדְעֵֽנוּ׃ hō·w ham·ma·‘ă·mî·qîm las·tir ‘ê·ṣāh wə·hā·yāh Yah·weh ḇə·maḥ·šāḵ ma·‘ă·śê·hem way·yō·mə·rū mî rō·’ê·nū ū·mî yō·wḏ·‘ê·nū — WLC · 15

You have turned things upside down, as if the potter were regarded as clay. Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, “He did not make me”? Can the pottery say of the potter, “He has no understanding”?

הַ֨פְכְּכֶ֔ם אִם־ הַיֹּצֵ֖ר יֵֽחָשֵׁ֑ב כְּחֹ֥מֶר כִּֽי־ מַעֲשֶׂ֤ה יֹאמַ֨ר לְעֹשֵׂ֙הוּ֙ לֹ֣א עָשָׂ֔נִי וְיֵ֛צֶר אָמַ֥ר לְיוֹצְר֖וֹ לֹ֥א הֵבִֽין׃ hap̄·kə·ḵem ’im- hay·yō·ṣêr yê·ḥā·šêḇ kə·ḥō·mer kî- ma·‘ă·śeh yō·mar lə·‘ō·śê·hū lō ‘ā·śā·nî wə·yê·ṣer ’ā·mar lə·yō·wṣ·rōw lō hê·ḇîn — WLC · 16
Sanctification for the Godly

On that day the deaf will hear the words of the scroll, and out of the deep darkness the eyes of the blind will see.

The humble will increase [their] joy in the LORD, and the poor among men will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.

For the ruthless will vanish, the mockers will disappear, and all who look for evil will be cut down—

those who indict a man with a word, who ensnare the mediator at the gate, and who with false charges deprive the innocent of justice.

Therefore the LORD who redeemed Abraham says of the house of Jacob: “No longer will Jacob be ashamed and no more will his face grow pale.

For when he sees his children around him, the work of My hands, they will honor My name, they will sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and they will stand in awe of the God of Israel.

כִּ֣י בִ֠רְאֹתוֹ יְלָדָ֞יו בְּקִרְבּ֖וֹ מַעֲשֵׂ֥ה יָדַ֛י יַקְדִּ֣ישֽׁוּ שְׁמִ֑י וְהִקְדִּ֙ישׁוּ֙ אֶת־ קְד֣וֹשׁ יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב וְאֶת־ יַעֲרִֽיצוּ׃ אֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל kî ḇir·’ō·ṯōw yə·lā·ḏāw bə·qir·bōw ma·‘ă·śêh yā·ḏay yaq·dî·šū šə·mî wə·hiq·dî·šū ’eṯ- qə·ḏō·wōš ya·‘ă·qōḇ wə·’eṯ- ya·‘ă·rî·ṣū ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 23

Then the wayward in spirit will come to understanding, and those who grumble will accept instruction.”
