Chapter 27

The LORD’s Vineyard

1

In that day the LORD [will take] His sharp, great, and mighty sword, and bring judgment on Leviathan the fleeing… serpent Leviathan the coiling serpent— and He will slay the dragon of the sea.

הַה֡וּא בַּיּ֣וֹם יְהוָה֩ הַקָּשָׁ֜ה וְהַגְּדוֹלָ֣ה וְהַֽחֲזָקָ֗ה בְּחַרְב֨וֹ יִפְקֹ֣ד עַ֤ל לִוְיָתָן֙ בָּרִ֔חַ וְעַל֙ נָחָ֣שׁ לִוְיָתָ֔ן עֲקַלָּת֑וֹן נָחָ֖שׁ וְהָרַ֥ג אֶת־ הַתַּנִּ֖ין אֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּיָּֽם׃ס ha·hū bay·yō·wm Yah·weh haq·qā·šāh wə·hag·gə·ḏō·w·lāh wə·ha·ḥă·zā·qāh bə·ḥar·ḇō yip̄·qōḏ ‘al liw·yā·ṯān bā·ri·aḥ wə·‘al nā·ḥāš liw·yā·ṯān ‘ă·qal·lā·ṯō·wn nā·ḥāš wə·hā·raḡ ’eṯ- hat·tan·nîn ’ă·šer bay·yāmWLC · 1

In that day: “Sing about a fruitful vineyard.

𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤏𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤄 𐤇𐤌𐤃 𐤊𐤓𐤌

הַה֑וּא בַּיּ֖וֹם עַנּוּ־ לָֽהּ׃ חֶ֖מֶד כֶּ֥רֶם ha·hū bay·yō·wm ‘an·nū- lāh ḥɛ·mɛḏ ke·remWLC · 2

I, the LORD, am its keeper; I water it continually… I guard it night and day so no one can disturb it;

𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤍𐤑𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤓𐤂𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤑𐤓𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤐𐤍 𐤉𐤐𐤒𐤃 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄

אֲנִ֤י יְהוָה֙ נֹֽצְרָ֔הּ אַשְׁקֶ֑נָּה לִרְגָעִ֖ים אֶצֳּרֶֽנָּה׃ לַ֥יְלָה וָי֖וֹם פֶּ֚ן יִפְקֹ֣ד עָלֶ֔יהָ ’ă·nî Yah·weh nō·ṣə·rāh ’aš·qen·nāh lir·ḡā·‘îm ’eṣ·ṣo·ren·nāh lay·lāh wā·yō·wm pen yip̄·qōḏ ‘ā·le·hāWLC · 3

I am not angry. If only thorns and briers confronted Me, I would march and trample them I would burn them to the ground.

𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤋𐤉 𐤌𐤉 𐤇𐤌𐤄 𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤓 𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤌𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤐𐤔𐤏𐤄 𐤁𐤄 𐤀𐤑𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤇𐤃

אֵ֣ין לִ֑י מִֽי־ חֵמָ֖ה שַׁ֙יִת֙ שָׁמִ֥יר יִתְּנֵ֜נִי בַּמִּלְחָמָ֔ה אֶפְשְׂעָ֥ה בָ֖הּ אֲצִיתֶ֥נָּה יָּֽחַד׃ ’ên lî mî- ḥê·māh ša·yiṯ šā·mîr yit·tə·nê·nî bam·mil·ḥā·māh ’ep̄·śə·‘āh ḇāh ’ă·ṣî·ṯen·nāh yā·ḥaḏWLC · 4

Or let them lay claim to My protection; let them make peace with Me— [yes,] let them make peace with Me.”

𐤀𐤅 𐤉𐤇𐤆𐤒 𐤁𐤌𐤏𐤅𐤆𐤉 𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤋𐤉 𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤋𐤉

א֚וֹ יַחֲזֵ֣ק בְּמָעוּזִּ֔י יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה שָׁל֖וֹם לִ֑י יַֽעֲשֶׂה־ שָׁל֖וֹם לִּֽי׃ ’ōw ya·ḥă·zêq bə·mā·‘ūz·zî ya·‘ă·śeh šā·lō·wm lî ya·‘ă·śeh- šā·lō·wm lîWLC · 5

In the days to come, Jacob will take root. Israel will bud and blossom and fill the whole world… with fruit.

𐤄𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤔 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤐𐤓𐤇 𐤉𐤑𐤉𐤑 𐤅𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤅 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤕𐤁𐤋 𐤕𐤍𐤅𐤁𐤄𐤎

הַבָּאִים֙ יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב יַשְׁרֵ֣שׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וּפָרַ֖ח יָצִ֥יץ וּמָלְא֥וּ פְנֵי־ תֵבֵ֖ל תְּנוּבָֽה׃ס hab·bā·’îm ya·‘ă·qōḇ yaš·rêš yiś·rā·’êl ū·p̄ā·raḥ yā·ṣîṣ ū·mā·lə·’ū p̄ə·nê- ṯê·ḇêl tə·nū·ḇāhWLC · 6

Has the LORD struck Israel as He struck her oppressors…? Was she killed like those who slayed her…?

𐤌𐤊𐤄𐤅 𐤄𐤊𐤌𐤊𐤕 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤅 𐤀𐤌 𐤄𐤓𐤂𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤄𐤓𐤂 𐤄𐤓𐤂

מַכֵּ֖הוּ הַכְּמַכַּ֥ת הִכָּ֑הוּ אִם־ הֲרֻגָ֖יו כְּהֶ֥רֶג הֹרָֽג׃ mak·kê·hū hak·kə·mak·kaṯ hik·kā·hū ’im- hă·ru·ḡāw kə·he·reḡ hō·rāḡWLC · 7

By warfare and exile You contended with her and removed her with a fierce wind, as on the day the east wind [blows].

𐤁𐤎𐤀𐤎𐤀𐤄 𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤄 𐤕𐤓𐤉𐤁𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤂𐤄 𐤄𐤒𐤔𐤄 𐤁𐤓𐤅𐤇𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤒𐤃𐤉𐤌

בְּסַּאסְּאָ֖ה בְּשַׁלְחָ֣הּ תְּרִיבֶ֑נָּה הָגָ֛ה הַקָּשָׁ֖ה בְּרוּח֥וֹ בְּי֥וֹם קָדִֽים׃ bə·sas·sə·’āh bə·šal·ḥāh tə·rî·ḇen·nāh hā·ḡāh haq·qā·šāh bə·rū·ḥōw bə·yō·wm qā·ḏîmWLC · 8

Therefore… Jacob’s guilt will be atoned for, and the full fruit of the removal of his sin will be this: When he makes all the altar… stones like crushed bits of chalk, no Asherah poles or incense altars will remain standing.

𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤁𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤉𐤊𐤐𐤓 𐤊𐤋 𐤐𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤎𐤓 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤆𐤄 𐤁𐤔𐤅𐤌𐤅 𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤊𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤍𐤐𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤂𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤇𐤌𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤒𐤌𐤅

לָכֵ֗ן בְּזֹאת֙ יַעֲקֹ֔ב עֲוֺֽן־ יְכֻפַּ֣ר כָּל־ פְּרִ֖י הָסִ֣ר חַטָּאת֑וֹ וְזֶ֕ה בְּשׂוּמ֣וֹ׀ כָּל־ מִזְבֵּ֗חַ כְּאַבְנֵי־ אַבְנֵ֣י מְנֻפָּצ֔וֹת גִר֙ לֹֽא־ אֲשֵׁרִ֖ים וְחַמָּנִֽים׃ יָקֻ֥מוּ lā·ḵên bə·zōṯ ya·‘ă·qōḇ ‘ă·wōn- yə·ḵup·par kāl- pə·rî hā·sir ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯōw wə·zeh bə·śū·mōw kāl- miz·bê·aḥ kə·’aḇ·nê- ’aḇ·nê mə·nup·pā·ṣō·wṯ ḡir lō- ’ă·šê·rîm wə·ḥam·mā·nîm yā·qu·mūWLC · 9

For the fortified city lies deserted— a homestead abandoned, a wilderness forsaken. There the calves graze, and there they lie down; they strip its branches {bare}.

𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤑𐤅𐤓𐤄 𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤁𐤃𐤃 𐤍𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤊𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤍𐤏𐤆𐤁 𐤔𐤌 𐤏𐤂𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤔𐤌 𐤉𐤓𐤁𐤑 𐤅𐤊𐤋𐤄 𐤎𐤏𐤐𐤉𐤄

כִּ֣י בְּצוּרָה֙ עִ֤יר בָּדָ֔ד נָוֶ֕ה מְשֻׁלָּ֥ח כַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר וְנֶעֱזָ֖ב שָׁ֣ם עֵ֛גֶל יִרְעֶ֥ה וְשָׁ֥ם יִרְבָּ֖ץ וְכִלָּ֥ה סְעִפֶֽיהָ׃ kî bə·ṣū·rāh ‘îr bā·ḏāḏ nā·weh mə·šul·lāḥ kam·miḏ·bār wə·ne·‘ĕ·zāḇ šām ‘ê·ḡel yir·‘eh wə·šām yir·bāṣ wə·ḵil·lāh sə·‘i·p̄e·hāWLC · 10

When its limbs are dry, they are broken off. Women come and use them for kindling -; for this [is] a people without understanding. Therefore… their Maker has no compassion on them, and their Creator shows them no favor.

𐤒𐤑𐤉𐤓𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤁𐤔 𐤕𐤔𐤁𐤓𐤍𐤄 𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤀𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤍 𐤏𐤔𐤄𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤓𐤇𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤇𐤍𐤍𐤅𐤎

קְצִירָהּ֙ בִּיבֹ֤שׁ תִּשָּׁבַ֔רְנָה נָשִׁ֕ים בָּא֖וֹת מְאִיר֣וֹת אוֹתָ֑הּ כִּ֣י ה֔וּא עַם־ לֹ֤א בִּינוֹת֙ עַל־ כֵּן֙ עֹשֵׂ֔הוּ לֹֽא־ יְרַחֲמֶ֣נּוּ וְיֹצְר֖וֹ לֹ֥א יְחֻנֶּֽנּוּ׃ס qə·ṣî·rāh bî·ḇōš tiš·šā·ḇar·nāh nā·šîm bā·’ō·wṯ mə·’î·rō·wṯ ’ō·w·ṯāh kî hū ‘am- lō bî·nō·wṯ ‘al- kên ‘ō·śê·hū lō- yə·ra·ḥă·men·nū wə·yō·ṣə·rōw lō yə·ḥun·nen·nūWLC · 11

  • In that day the LORD will thresh from the flowing Euphrates to the Wadi of Egypt, and you, O Israelites…, will be gathered one by one.

𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤇𐤁𐤈 𐤌𐤔𐤁𐤋𐤕 𐤄𐤍𐤄𐤓 𐤏𐤃 𐤍𐤇𐤋 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋𐤎 𐤕𐤋𐤒𐤈𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤀𐤇𐤃

וְהָיָה֙ הַה֔וּא בַּיּ֣וֹם יְהוָ֛ה יַחְבֹּ֧ט מִשִּׁבֹּ֥לֶת הַנָּהָ֖ר עַד־ נַ֣חַל מִצְרָ֑יִם וְאַתֶּ֧ם בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס תְּלֻקְּט֛וּ לְאַחַ֥ד אֶחָ֖ד wə·hā·yāh ha·hū bay·yō·wm Yah·weh yaḥ·bōṭ miš·šib·bō·leṯ han·nā·hār ‘aḏ- na·ḥal miṣ·rā·yim wə·’at·tem bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl tə·luq·qə·ṭū lə·’a·ḥaḏ ’e·ḥāḏWLC · 12

And in that day a great ram’s horn will sound, and those who were perishing vvv in Assyria will come forth with those who were exiles vvv in Egypt. And they will worship the LORD on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.

וְהָיָ֣ה׀ הַה֗וּא בַּיּ֣וֹם גָּדוֹל֒ בְּשׁוֹפָ֣ר יִתָּקַע֮ הָאֹֽבְדִים֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ אַשּׁ֔וּר וּבָ֗אוּ וְהַנִּדָּחִ֖ים בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם וְהִשְׁתַּחֲו֧וּ לַיהוָ֛ה הַקֹּ֖דֶשׁ בְּהַ֥ר בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ wə·hā·yāh ha·hū bay·yō·wm gā·ḏō·wl bə·šō·w·p̄ār yit·tā·qa‘ hā·’ō·ḇə·ḏîm bə·’e·reṣ ’aš·šūr ū·ḇā·’ū wə·han·nid·dā·ḥîm bə·’e·reṣ miṣ·rā·yim wə·hiš·ta·ḥă·wū Yah·weh haq·qō·ḏeš bə·har bî·rū·šā·limWLC · 13
