Chapter 26
A Song of Salvation
1
In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah: We have a strong city; salvation is established as its walls and ramparts.

Open the gates so a righteous nation may enter— one that remains faithful.

You will keep in perfect peace… the steadfast of mind, because he trusts in You.

Trust in the LORD forever…, because GOD the LORD [is] the Rock eternal.

בִּטְח֥וּ בַֽיהוָ֖ה עֲדֵי־ עַ֑ד כִּ֚י בְּיָ֣הּ יְהוָ֔ה צ֖וּר עוֹלָמִֽים׃ biṭ·ḥū Yah·weh ‘ă·ḏê- ‘aḏ kî bə·yāh Yah·weh ṣūr ‘ō·w·lā·mîm — WLC · 4

For He has humbled those who dwell on high; He lays the lofty city {low}. He brings it down to the ground; He casts it into the dust.

כִּ֤י הֵשַׁח֙ יֹשְׁבֵ֣י מָר֔וֹם יַשְׁפִּילֶ֤נָּה נִשְׂגָּבָ֑ה קִרְיָ֖ה יַשְׁפִּילָהּ֙ עַד־ אֶ֔רֶץ יַגִּיעֶ֖נָּה עַד־ עָפָֽר׃ kî hê·šaḥ yō·šə·ḇê mā·rō·wm yaš·pî·len·nāh niś·gā·ḇāh qir·yāh yaš·pî·lāh ‘aḏ- ’e·reṣ yag·gî·‘en·nāh ‘aḏ- ‘ā·p̄ār — WLC · 5

Feet trample it down— the feet of the oppressed, the steps of the poor.

The path of the righteous is level; You clear a straight path for the upright.

אֹ֥רַח לַצַּדִּ֖יק מֵֽישָׁרִ֑ים תְּפַלֵּֽס׃ צַדִּ֖יק מַעְגַּ֥ל יָשָׁ֕ר ’ō·raḥ laṣ·ṣad·dîq mê·šā·rîm tə·p̄al·lês ṣad·dîq ma‘·gal yā·šār — WLC · 7

Yes, we wait for You, O LORD; [we walk] in the path of Your judgments. Your name and renown are the desire of [our] souls.

אַ֣ף קִוִּינ֑וּךָ יְהוָ֖ה אֹ֧רַח מִשְׁפָּטֶ֛יךָ לְשִׁמְךָ֥ וּֽלְזִכְרְךָ֖ תַּאֲוַת־ נָֽפֶשׁ׃ ’ap̄ qiw·wî·nū·ḵā Yah·weh ’ō·raḥ miš·pā·ṭe·ḵā lə·šim·ḵā ū·lə·ziḵ·rə·ḵā ta·’ă·waṯ- nā·p̄eš — WLC · 8

My soul longs [for You] in the night; indeed, my spirit seeks You at dawn. For when Your judgments [come] upon the earth, the people of the world learn righteousness.

נַפְשִׁ֤י אִוִּיתִ֙יךָ֙ בַּלַּ֔יְלָה אַף־ רוּחִ֥י אֲשַֽׁחֲרֶ֑ךָּ בְקִרְבִּ֖י כִּ֞י כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר מִשְׁפָּטֶ֙יךָ֙ לָאָ֔רֶץ יֹשְׁבֵ֥י תֵבֵֽל׃ לָמְד֖וּ צֶ֥דֶק nap̄·šî ’iw·wî·ṯî·ḵā bal·lay·lāh ’ap̄- rū·ḥî ’ă·ša·ḥă·re·kā ḇə·qir·bî kî ka·’ă·šer miš·pā·ṭe·ḵā lā·’ā·reṣ yō·šə·ḇê ṯê·ḇêl lā·mə·ḏū ṣe·ḏeq — WLC · 9

Though grace is shown to the wicked man, he does not learn righteousness. In the land of righteousness he acts unjustly and fails to see the majesty of the LORD.

יֻחַ֤ן רָשָׁע֙ בַּל־ לָמַ֣ד צֶ֔דֶק בְּאֶ֥רֶץ נְכֹח֖וֹת יְעַוֵּ֑ל וּבַל־ יִרְאֶ֖ה גֵּא֥וּת יְהוָֽה׃ס yu·ḥan rā·šā‘ bal- lā·maḏ ṣe·ḏeq bə·’e·reṣ nə·ḵō·ḥō·wṯ yə·‘aw·wêl ū·ḇal- yir·’eh gê·’ūṯ Yah·weh — WLC · 10

O LORD, Your hand is upraised, but they do not see it. They will see Your zeal for Your people… and be put to shame. The fire [set] for Your enemies will consume them!

יְהוָ֛ה יָדְךָ֖ רָ֥מָה בַּל־ יֶחֱזָי֑וּן יֶחֱז֤וּ קִנְאַת־ עָ֔ם אַף־ וְיֵבֹ֙שׁוּ֙ אֵ֖שׁ צָרֶ֥יךָ תֹאכְלֵֽם׃ס Yah·weh yā·ḏə·ḵā rā·māh bal- ye·ḥĕ·zā·yūn ye·ḥĕ·zū qin·’aṯ- ‘ām ’ap̄- wə·yê·ḇō·šū ’êš ṣā·re·ḵā ṯō·ḵə·lêm — WLC · 11

O LORD, You will establish peace for us. For… all that we have accomplished, You have done for us.

O LORD our God, [other] lords besides You have ruled over us, but Your name alone do we confess

יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ אֲדֹנִ֖ים זֽוּלָתֶ֑ךָ בְּעָל֥וּנוּ שְׁמֶֽךָ׃ לְבַד־ נַזְכִּ֥יר בְּךָ֖ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū ’ă·ḏō·nîm zū·lā·ṯe·ḵā bə·‘ā·lū·nū šə·me·ḵā lə·ḇaḏ- naz·kîr bə·ḵā — WLC · 13

The dead will not live; the departed spirits will not rise. Therefore You have punished and destroyed them; You have wiped out all memory of them.

מֵתִים֙ בַּל־ יִחְי֔וּ רְפָאִ֖ים בַּל־ יָקֻ֑מוּ לָכֵ֤ן פָּקַ֙דְתָּ֙ וַתַּשְׁמִידֵ֔ם וַתְּאַבֵּ֥ד כָּל־ זֵ֖כֶר לָֽמוֹ׃ mê·ṯîm bal- yiḥ·yū rə·p̄ā·’îm bal- yā·qu·mū lā·ḵên pā·qaḏ·tā wat·taš·mî·ḏêm wat·tə·’ab·bêḏ kāl- zê·ḵer lā·mōw — WLC · 14

You have enlarged the nation, O LORD; You have enlarged the nation. You have gained glory for Yourself; You have extended all the borders of the land.

יָסַ֤פְתָּ לַגּוֹי֙ יְהוָ֔ה יָסַ֥פְתָּ לַגּ֖וֹי נִכְבָּ֑דְתָּ רִחַ֖קְתָּ כָּל־ קַצְוֵי־ אָֽרֶץ׃ yā·sap̄·tā lag·gō·w Yah·weh yā·sap̄·tā lag·gō·w niḵ·bā·ḏə·tā ri·ḥaq·tā kāl- qaṣ·wê- ’ā·reṣ — WLC · 15

O LORD, they sought You in their distress; when You disciplined them, they poured out a quiet prayer.

יְהוָ֖ה פְּקָד֑וּךָ בַּצַּ֣ר מוּסָרְךָ֖ צָק֣וּן לַ֔חַשׁ לָֽמוֹ׃ Yah·weh pə·qā·ḏū·ḵā baṣ·ṣar mū·sā·rə·ḵā ṣā·qūn la·ḥaš lā·mōw — WLC · 16

As a woman with child about to give birth writhes and cries out in pain, so were we in Your presence, O LORD.

כְּמ֤וֹ הָרָה֙ תַּקְרִ֣יב לָלֶ֔דֶת תָּחִ֥יל תִּזְעַ֖ק בַּחֲבָלֶ֑יהָ כֵּ֛ן הָיִ֥ינוּ מִפָּנֶ֖יךָ יְהוָֽה׃ kə·mōw hā·rāh taq·rîḇ lā·le·ḏeṯ tā·ḥîl tiz·‘aq ba·ḥă·ḇā·le·hā kên hā·yî·nū mip·pā·ne·ḵā Yah·weh — WLC · 17

We were with child; we writhed in pain; but we gave birth to wind. We have given no salvation to the earth, nor brought any life into the world.

הָרִ֣ינוּ חַ֔לְנוּ כְּמ֖וֹ יָלַ֣דְנוּ ר֑וּחַ נַ֣עֲשֶׂה בַּל־ יְשׁוּעֹת֙ אֶ֔רֶץ וּבַֽל־ יִפְּל֖וּ יֹשְׁבֵ֥י תֵבֵֽל׃ hā·rî·nū ḥal·nū kə·mōw yā·laḏ·nū rū·aḥ na·‘ă·śeh bal- yə·šū·‘ōṯ ’e·reṣ ū·ḇal- yip·pə·lū yō·šə·ḇê ṯê·ḇêl — WLC · 18

Your dead will live; their bodies will rise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust! For your dew is like the dew of the morning, and the earth will bring forth her dead.

מֵתֶ֔יךָ יִֽחְי֣וּ נְבֵלָתִ֖י יְקוּמ֑וּן הָקִ֨יצוּ וְרַנְּנ֜וּ שֹׁכְנֵ֣י עָפָ֗ר כִּ֣י טַ֤ל טַלֶּ֔ךָ אוֹרֹת֙ וָאָ֖רֶץ תַּפִּֽיל׃ס רְפָאִ֥ים mê·ṯe·ḵā yiḥ·yū nə·ḇê·lā·ṯî yə·qū·mūn hā·qî·ṣū wə·ran·nə·nū šō·ḵə·nê ‘ā·p̄ār kî ṭal ṭal·le·ḵā ’ō·w·rōṯ wā·’ā·reṣ tap·pîl rə·p̄ā·’îm — WLC · 19

Go, my people, enter your rooms and shut your doors behind you. Hide yourselves a little while until the wrath has passed.

לֵ֤ךְ עַמִּי֙ בֹּ֣א בַחֲדָרֶ֔יךָ וּֽסְגֹ֥ר דְּלָתֶיךָ בַּעֲדֶ֑ךָ חֲבִ֥י כִמְעַט־ רֶ֖גַע עַד־ זָֽעַם׃ יַעֲבוֹר lêḵ ‘am·mî bō ḇa·ḥă·ḏā·re·ḵā ū·sə·ḡōr də·lå̄·ṯɛ·ḵå̄ ba·‘ă·ḏe·ḵā ḥă·ḇî ḵim·‘aṭ- re·ḡa‘ ‘aḏ- zā·‘am ya·ʿă·ḇōr — WLC · 20

For behold, the LORD is coming out of His dwelling to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity… The earth will reveal her bloodshed and will no longer… conceal her slain.

כִּֽי־ הִנֵּ֤ה יְהוָה֙ יֹצֵ֣א מִמְּקוֹמ֔וֹ לִפְקֹ֛ד יֹֽשֵׁב־ הָאָ֖רֶץ עֲוֺ֥ן עָלָ֑יו הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ אֶת־ וְגִלְּתָ֤ה דָּמֶ֔יהָ וְלֹֽא־ ע֖וֹד עַל־ תְכַסֶּ֥ה הֲרוּגֶֽיהָ׃ס kî- hin·nêh Yah·weh yō·ṣê mim·mə·qō·w·mōw lip̄·qōḏ yō·šêḇ- hā·’ā·reṣ ‘ă·wōn ‘ā·lāw hā·’ā·reṣ ’eṯ- wə·ḡil·lə·ṯāh dā·me·hā wə·lō- ‘ō·wḏ ‘al- ṯə·ḵas·seh hă·rū·ḡe·hā — WLC · 21
