The Burden against Tyre
1
[This is] the burden against Tyre: Wail, O ships of Tarshish, for [Tyre] is laid waste, without house [or] harbor. Word has reached them from the land of Cyprus.

מַשָּׂ֖א צֹ֑ר הֵילִ֣ילוּ׀ אֳנִיּ֣וֹת תַּרְשִׁ֗ישׁ כִּֽי־ שֻׁדַּ֤ד מִבַּ֙יִת֙ מִבּ֔וֹא נִגְלָה־ לָֽמוֹ׃ מֵאֶ֥רֶץ כִּתִּ֖ים maś·śā ṣōr hê·lî·lū ’o·nî·yō·wṯ tar·šîš kî- šud·daḏ mib·ba·yiṯ mib·bō·w niḡ·lāh- lā·mōw mê·’e·reṣ kit·tîm — WLC · 1

Be silent, O dwellers of the coastland, you merchants of Sidon, whose traders have crossed the sea.

On the great waters came the grain of Shihor; the harvest of the Nile was the revenue of Tyre; she was the merchant of the nations.

Be ashamed, O Sidon, the stronghold of the sea, for the sea… has spoken: “I have not been in labor or given birth… I have not raised young men or brought up young women.”

When the report [reaches] Egypt, they will writhe in agony over the news of Tyre.

Cross over to Tarshish; wail, O inhabitants of the coastland!

Is this your jubilant city, whose origin is from antiquity…, whose feet have taken her to settle far away?

Who planned this against Tyre, the bestower of crowns, whose traders are princes, whose merchants are renowned on the earth?

מִ֚י יָעַ֣ץ זֹ֔את עַל־ צֹ֖ר הַמַּֽעֲטִירָ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר סֹחֲרֶ֙יה֙ שָׂרִ֔ים כִּנְעָנֶ֖יהָ נִכְבַּדֵּי־ אָֽרֶץ׃ mî yā·‘aṣ zōṯ ‘al- ṣōr ham·ma·‘ă·ṭî·rāh ’ă·šer sō·ḥă·reh śā·rîm kin·‘ā·ne·hā niḵ·bad·dê- ’ā·reṣ — WLC · 8

The LORD of Hosts planned it, to defile all its glorious beauty, to disgrace all the renowned of the earth.

Cultivate your land like the Nile, O Daughter of Tarshish; there is no longer a harbor.

[The LORD] has stretched out His hand over the sea; He has made kingdoms tremble. [He] has given a command that the strongholds of Canaan be destroyed.

נָטָ֣ה יָדוֹ֙ עַל־ הַיָּ֔ם מַמְלָכ֑וֹת הִרְגִּ֖יז יְהוָה֙ צִוָּ֣ה אֶל־ מָעֻזְנֶֽיהָ׃ כְּנַ֔עַן לַשְׁמִ֖ד nā·ṭāh yā·ḏōw ‘al- hay·yām mam·lā·ḵō·wṯ hir·gîz Yah·weh ṣiw·wāh ’el- mā·‘uz·ne·hā kə·na·‘an laš·miḏ — WLC · 11

He said, “You shall rejoice no more…, O oppressed Virgin Daughter of Sidon. Get up and cross over to Cyprus— even there you will find no rest

Look at the land of the Chaldeans a people now of no account. The Assyrians destined it for the desert creatures; they set up their siege towers and stripped its palaces. They brought it to ruin.

הֵ֣ן׀ אֶ֣רֶץ זֶ֤ה כַּשְׂדִּ֗ים הָעָם֙ לֹ֣א הָיָ֔ה אַשּׁ֖וּר יְסָדָ֣הּ לְצִיִּ֑ים הֵקִ֣ימוּ בְחִינָיו עֹרְרוּ֙ אַרְמְנוֹתֶ֔יהָ שָׂמָ֖הּ לְמַפֵּלָֽה׃ hên ’e·reṣ zeh kaś·dîm hā·‘ām lō hā·yāh ’aš·šūr yə·sā·ḏāh lə·ṣî·yîm hê·qî·mū ḇə·ḥī·nå̄w ‘ō·rə·rū ’ar·mə·nō·w·ṯe·hā śā·māh lə·map·pê·lāh — WLC · 13

Wail, O ships of Tarshish, for your harbor has been destroyed!

הֵילִ֖ילוּ אֳנִיּ֣וֹת תַּרְשִׁ֑ישׁ כִּ֥י מָעֻזְּכֶֽן׃ס שֻׁדַּ֖ד hê·lî·lū ’o·nî·yō·wṯ tar·šîš kî mā·‘uz·zə·ḵen šud·daḏ — WLC · 14

- At that time Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years— the span of a king’s life. But at the end of seventy years, it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the harlot:

וְהָיָה֙ הַה֔וּא בַּיּ֣וֹם צֹר֙ וְנִשְׁכַּ֤חַת שִׁבְעִ֣ים שָׁנָ֔ה כִּימֵ֖י אֶחָ֑ד מֶ֣לֶךְ מִקֵּ֞ץ שִׁבְעִ֤ים שָׁנָה֙ יִהְיֶ֣ה לְצֹ֔ר כְּשִׁירַ֖ת הַזּוֹנָֽה׃ wə·hā·yāh ha·hū bay·yō·wm ṣōr wə·niš·ka·ḥaṯ šiḇ·‘îm šā·nāh kî·mê ’e·ḥāḏ me·leḵ miq·qêṣ šiḇ·‘îm šā·nāh yih·yeh lə·ṣōr kə·šî·raṯ haz·zō·w·nāh — WLC · 15

“Take up your harp, stroll through the city, O forgotten harlot. Make sweet melody, sing many a song,… so you will be remembered.”

קְחִ֥י כִנּ֛וֹר סֹ֥בִּי עִ֖יר נִשְׁכָּחָ֑ה זוֹנָ֣ה הֵיטִ֤יבִי נַגֵּן֙ הַרְבִּי־ שִׁ֔יר לְמַ֖עַן תִּזָּכֵֽרִי׃ qə·ḥî ḵin·nō·wr sōb·bî ‘îr niš·kā·ḥāh zō·w·nāh hê·ṭî·ḇî nag·gên har·bî- šîr lə·ma·‘an tiz·zā·ḵê·rî — WLC · 16

And at the end of seventy years, the LORD will restore Tyre. Then she will return to hire as a prostitute and sell herself to all the kingdoms on the face of the earth.
𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤒𐤑 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤐𐤒𐤃 𐤑𐤓 𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤆𐤍𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄
וְהָיָ֞ה מִקֵּ֣ץ׀ שִׁבְעִ֣ים שָׁנָ֗ה יְהוָה֙ אֶת־ יִפְקֹ֤ד צֹ֔ר וְשָׁבָ֖ה לְאֶתְנַנָּ֑ה וְזָֽנְתָ֛ה אֶת־ כָּל־ מַמְלְכ֥וֹת הָאָ֖רֶץ עַל־ פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָֽה׃ wə·hā·yāh miq·qêṣ šiḇ·‘îm šā·nāh Yah·weh ’eṯ- yip̄·qōḏ ṣōr wə·šā·ḇāh lə·’eṯ·nan·nāh wə·zā·nə·ṯāh ’eṯ- kāl- mam·lə·ḵō·wṯ hā·’ā·reṣ ‘al- pə·nê hā·’ă·ḏā·māh — WLC · 17

Yet her profits and wages will be set apart to the LORD; they will not be stored… or saved, for her profit will go to those who live before the LORD, for abundant food and fine clothing.

סַחְרָ֜הּ וְאֶתְנַנָּ֗הּ וְהָיָ֨ה קֹ֚דֶשׁ לַֽיהוָ֔ה לֹ֥א יֵֽאָצֵ֖ר וְלֹ֣א יֵֽחָסֵ֑ן כִּ֣י יִֽהְיֶ֣ה סַחְרָ֔הּ לַיֹּשְׁבִ֞ים לִפְנֵ֤י יְהוָה֙ לְשָׂבְעָ֖ה לֶאֱכֹ֥ל עָתִֽיק׃פ וְלִמְכַסֶּ֥ה saḥ·rāh wə·’eṯ·nan·nāh wə·hā·yāh qō·ḏeš Yah·weh lō yê·’ā·ṣêr wə·lō yê·ḥā·sên kî yih·yeh saḥ·rāh lay·yō·šə·ḇîm lip̄·nê Yah·weh lə·śā·ḇə·‘āh le·’ĕ·ḵōl ‘ā·ṯîq wə·lim·ḵas·seh — WLC · 18
