Chapter 13

The Burden against Babylon

1

[This is] the burden against Babylon that Isaiah son of Amoz received:

𐤌𐤔𐤀 𐤁𐤁𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤑 𐤇𐤆𐤄

מַשָּׂ֖א בָּבֶ֑ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר יְשַׁעְיָ֖הוּ בֶּן־ אָמֽוֹץ׃ חָזָ֔ה maś·śā bā·ḇel ’ă·šer yə·ša‘·yā·hū ben- ’ā·mō·wṣ ḥā·zāhWLC · 1

Raise a banner on a barren hilltop; call aloud to them. Wave your hand, that they may enter the gates of the nobles.

𐤔𐤀𐤅 𐤍𐤎 𐤏𐤋 𐤍𐤔𐤐𐤄 𐤄𐤓 𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌𐤅 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤐𐤅 𐤉𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤐𐤕𐤇𐤉 𐤍𐤃𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤌

שְֽׂאוּ־ נֵ֔ס עַ֤ל נִשְׁפֶּה֙ הַר־ הָרִ֥ימוּ ק֖וֹל לָהֶ֑ם הָנִ֣יפוּ יָ֔ד וְיָבֹ֖אוּ פִּתְחֵ֥י נְדִיבִֽים׃ śə·’ū- nês ‘al niš·peh har- hā·rî·mū qō·wl lā·hem hā·nî·p̄ū yāḏ wə·yā·ḇō·’ū piṯ·ḥê nə·ḏî·ḇîmWLC · 2

I have commanded My sanctified ones; I have even summoned My warriors to execute My wrath [and] exult in My triumph.

𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤑𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤌𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤉 𐤂𐤌 𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤓𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤐𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤆𐤉 𐤂𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤉

אֲנִ֥י צִוֵּ֖יתִי לִמְקֻדָּשָׁ֑י גַּ֣ם קָרָ֤אתִי גִבּוֹרַי֙ לְאַפִּ֔י עַלִּיזֵ֖י גַּאֲוָתִֽי׃ ’ă·nî ṣiw·wê·ṯî lim·qud·dā·šāy gam qā·rā·ṯî ḡib·bō·w·ray lə·’ap·pî ‘al·lî·zê ga·’ă·wā·ṯîWLC · 3

Listen, a tumult on the mountains, like that of a great multitude! Listen, an uproar among the kingdoms, like nations gathered together! The LORD of Hosts is mobilizing an army for war.

𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤅𐤍 𐤁𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤃𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤓𐤁 𐤏𐤌 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤌𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅𐤕 𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤀𐤎𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤐𐤒𐤃 𐤑𐤁𐤀 𐤌𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤄

ק֥וֹל הָמ֛וֹן בֶּֽהָרִ֖ים דְּמ֣וּת רָ֑ב עַם־ ק֠וֹל שְׁא֞וֹן מַמְלְכ֤וֹת גּוֹיִם֙ נֶֽאֱסָפִ֔ים יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת מְפַקֵּ֖ד צְבָ֥א מִלְחָמָֽה׃ qō·wl hā·mō·wn be·hā·rîm də·mūṯ rāḇ ‘am- qō·wl šə·’ō·wn mam·lə·ḵō·wṯ gō·w·yim ne·’ĕ·sā·p̄îm Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ mə·p̄aq·qêḏ ṣə·ḇā mil·ḥā·māhWLC · 4

They are coming from faraway lands, from the ends of the heavens— the LORD and the weapons of His wrath— to destroy the whole country.

𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤓𐤇𐤒 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤒𐤑𐤄 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤋𐤉 𐤆𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤋𐤇𐤁𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑

בָּאִ֛ים מֶרְחָ֖ק מֵאֶ֥רֶץ מִקְצֵ֣ה הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם יְהוָה֙ וּכְלֵ֣י זַעְמ֔וֹ לְחַבֵּ֖ל כָּל־ הָאָֽרֶץ׃ bā·’îm mer·ḥāq mê·’e·reṣ miq·ṣêh haš·šā·mā·yim Yah·weh ū·ḵə·lê za‘·mōw lə·ḥab·bêl kāl- hā·’ā·reṣWLC · 5

Wail, for the Day of the LORD is near; it will come as destruction from the Almighty.

𐤄𐤉𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤒𐤓𐤅𐤁 𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤊𐤔𐤃 𐤌𐤔𐤃𐤉

הֵילִ֕ילוּ כִּ֥י י֣וֹם יְהוָ֑ה קָר֖וֹב יָבֽוֹא׃ כְּשֹׁ֖ד מִשַּׁדַּ֥י hê·lî·lū kî yō·wm Yah·weh qā·rō·wḇ yā·ḇō·w kə·šōḏ miš·šad·dayWLC · 6

Therefore… all hands will fall limp, and every man’s heart will melt.

עַל־ כֵּ֖ן כָּל־ יָדַ֣יִם תִּרְפֶּ֑ינָה וְכָל־ אֱנ֖וֹשׁ לְבַ֥ב יִמָּס׃ ‘al- kên kāl- yā·ḏa·yim tir·pe·nāh wə·ḵāl ’ĕ·nō·wōš lə·ḇaḇ yim·må̄sWLC · 7

Terror, pain, and anguish will seize them; they will writhe like a woman in labor. They will look at one another, their faces flushed… with fear.

𐤅𐤍𐤁𐤄𐤋𐤅 𐤑𐤉𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤇𐤁𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤀𐤇𐤆𐤅𐤍 𐤉𐤇𐤉𐤋𐤅𐤍 𐤊𐤉𐤅𐤋𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤓𐤏𐤄𐤅 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤋𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤉𐤕𐤌𐤄𐤅

וְֽנִבְהָ֓לוּ׀ צִירִ֤ים וַֽחֲבָלִים֙ יֹֽאחֵז֔וּן יְחִיל֑וּן כַּיּוֹלֵדָ֖ה אֶל־ אִ֤ישׁ רֵעֵ֙הוּ֙ פְּנֵ֥י לְהָבִ֖ים פְּנֵיהֶֽם׃ יִתְמָ֔הוּ wə·niḇ·hā·lū ṣî·rîm wa·ḥă·ḇā·lîm yō·ḥê·zūn yə·ḥî·lūn kay·yō·w·lê·ḏāh ’el- ’îš rê·‘ê·hū pə·nê lə·hā·ḇîm pə·nê·hem yiṯ·mā·hūWLC · 8

Behold, the Day of the LORD is coming— cruel, with fury and burning anger…— to make the earth a desolation and to destroy the sinners within it.

𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤊𐤆𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤇𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤐 𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤄 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤅𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤄

הִנֵּ֤ה יוֹם־ יְהוָה֙ בָּ֔א אַכְזָרִ֥י וְעֶבְרָ֖ה וַחֲר֣וֹן אָ֑ף לָשׂ֤וּם הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ לְשַׁמָּ֔ה יַשְׁמִ֥יד וְחַטָּאֶ֖יהָ מִמֶּֽנָּה׃ hin·nêh yō·wm- Yah·weh bā ’aḵ·zā·rî wə·‘eḇ·rāh wa·ḥă·rō·wn ’āp̄ lā·śūm hā·’ā·reṣ lə·šam·māh yaš·mîḏ wə·ḥaṭ·ṭā·’e·hā mim·men·nāhWLC · 9

For the stars of heaven and their constellations will not give their light. The rising sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light.

𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤅𐤊𐤁𐤉 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤎𐤉𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤄𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤅𐤓𐤌 𐤁𐤑𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤔 𐤇𐤔𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤇 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤂𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤅𐤓𐤅

כִּֽי־ כוֹכְבֵ֤י הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ וּכְסִ֣ילֵיהֶ֔ם לֹ֥א יָהֵ֖לּוּ אוֹרָ֑ם בְּצֵאת֔וֹ הַשֶּׁ֙מֶשׁ֙ חָשַׁ֤ךְ וְיָרֵ֖חַ לֹֽא־ יַגִּ֥יהַ אוֹרֽוֹ׃ kî- ḵō·wḵ·ḇê haš·šā·ma·yim ū·ḵə·sî·lê·hem lō yā·hêl·lū ’ō·w·rām bə·ṣê·ṯōw haš·še·meš ḥā·šaḵ wə·yā·rê·aḥ lō- yag·gî·ha ’ō·w·rōwWLC · 10

I will punish the world [for its] evil and the wicked for their iniquity. I will end the haughtiness of the arrogant and lay low the pride of the ruthless.

𐤅𐤐𐤒𐤃𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤕𐤁𐤋 𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤕𐤉 𐤂𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤆𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤐𐤉𐤋 𐤅𐤂𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤑𐤉𐤌

וּפָקַדְתִּ֤י עַל־ תֵּבֵל֙ רָעָ֔ה וְעַל־ רְשָׁעִ֖ים עֲוֺנָ֑ם וְהִשְׁבַּתִּי֙ גְּא֣וֹן זֵדִ֔ים אַשְׁפִּֽיל׃ וְגַאֲוַ֥ת עָרִיצִ֖ים ū·p̄ā·qaḏ·tî ‘al- tê·ḇêl rā·‘āh wə·‘al- rə·šā·‘îm ‘ă·wō·nām wə·hiš·bat·tî gə·’ō·wn zê·ḏîm ’aš·pîl wə·ḡa·’ă·waṯ ‘ā·rî·ṣîmWLC · 11

{I will make} man scarcer than pure gold, and mankind rarer than the gold of Ophir.

𐤀𐤍𐤅𐤔 𐤀𐤅𐤒𐤉𐤓 𐤌𐤐𐤆 𐤅𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤌𐤊𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤐𐤉𐤓

אֱנ֖וֹשׁ אוֹקִ֥יר מִפָּ֑ז וְאָדָ֖ם מִכֶּ֥תֶם אוֹפִֽיר׃ ’ĕ·nō·wōš ’ō·w·qîr mip·pāz wə·’ā·ḏām mik·ke·ṯem ’ō·w·p̄îrWLC · 12

Therefore… I will make the heavens tremble, and the earth will be shaken from its place at the wrath of the LORD of Hosts on the day of His burning anger…

𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤍 𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤓𐤂𐤉𐤆 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤕𐤓𐤏𐤔 𐤌𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤇𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤐𐤅

עַל־ כֵּן֙ שָׁמַ֣יִם אַרְגִּ֔יז הָאָ֖רֶץ וְתִרְעַ֥שׁ מִמְּקוֹמָ֑הּ בְּעֶבְרַת֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת וּבְי֖וֹם חֲר֥וֹן אַפּֽוֹ׃ ‘al- kên šā·ma·yim ’ar·gîz hā·’ā·reṣ wə·ṯir·‘aš mim·mə·qō·w·māh bə·‘eḇ·raṯ Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ū·ḇə·yō·wm ḥă·rō·wn ’ap·pōwWLC · 13

  • Like a hunted gazelle, like a sheep without a shepherd, each will return to his own people, each will flee to his native land.

𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤃𐤇 𐤊𐤑𐤁𐤉 𐤅𐤊𐤑𐤀𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤌𐤒𐤁𐤑 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤐𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤍𐤅𐤎𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤅

וְהָיָה֙ מֻדָּ֔ח כִּצְבִ֣י וּכְצֹ֖אן וְאֵ֣ין מְקַבֵּ֑ץ אִ֤ישׁ יִפְנ֔וּ אֶל־ עַמּוֹ֙ וְאִ֥ישׁ יָנֽוּסוּ׃ אֶל־ אַרְצ֖וֹ wə·hā·yāh mud·dāḥ kiṣ·ḇî ū·ḵə·ṣōn wə·’ên mə·qab·bêṣ ’îš yip̄·nū ’el- ‘am·mōw wə·’îš yā·nū·sū ’el- ’ar·ṣōwWLC · 14

Whoever is caught will be stabbed, and whoever is captured will die by the sword.

𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤉𐤃𐤒𐤓 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤎𐤐𐤄 𐤉𐤐𐤅𐤋 𐤁𐤇𐤓𐤁

כָּל־ הַנִּמְצָ֖א יִדָּקֵ֑ר וְכָל־ הַנִּסְפֶּ֖ה יִפּ֥וֹל בֶּחָֽרֶב׃ kāl- han·nim·ṣā yid·dā·qêr wə·ḵāl han·nis·peh yip·pō·wl be·ḥā·reḇWLC · 15

Their infants will be dashed to pieces before their eyes, their houses will be looted, and their wives will be ravished.

𐤅𐤏𐤋𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤉𐤓𐤈𐤔𐤅 𐤋𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤎𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤕𐤔𐤂𐤋𐤍𐤄

וְעֹלְלֵיהֶ֥ם יְרֻטְּשׁ֖וּ לְעֵֽינֵיהֶ֑ם בָּֽתֵּיהֶ֔ם יִשַּׁ֙סּוּ֙ וּנְשֵׁיהֶ֖ם תִּשָּׁגַלְנָה׃ wə·‘ō·lə·lê·hem yə·ruṭ·ṭə·šū lə·‘ê·nê·hem bāt·tê·hem yiš·šas·sū ū·nə·šê·hem tiš·šå̄·ḡal·nå̄hWLC · 16

Behold, I will stir up against them the Medes -, who have no regard for silver and no desire for gold.

𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤌𐤃𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤇𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤊𐤎𐤐 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤇𐤐𐤑𐤅 𐤁𐤅 𐤅𐤆𐤄𐤁

הִנְנִ֛י מֵעִ֥יר עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם מָדָ֑י אֶת־ אֲשֶׁר־ לֹ֣א יַחְשֹׁ֔בוּ כֶּ֙סֶף֙ לֹ֥א יַחְפְּצוּ־ בֽוֹ׃ וְזָהָ֖ב hin·nî mê·‘îr ‘ă·lê·hem mā·ḏāy ’eṯ- ’ă·šer- lō yaḥ·šō·ḇū ke·sep̄ lō yaḥ·pə·ṣū- ḇōw wə·zā·hāḇWLC · 17

Their bows {will dash} young men to pieces; they will have no mercy on the fruit of the womb; they will not look with pity… on the children.

𐤅𐤒𐤔𐤕𐤅𐤕 𐤍𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤓𐤈𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤓𐤇𐤌𐤅 𐤅𐤐𐤓𐤉 𐤁𐤈𐤍 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤇𐤅𐤎 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌

וּקְשָׁת֖וֹת נְעָרִ֣ים תְּרַטַּ֑שְׁנָה לֹ֣א יְרַחֵ֔מוּ וּפְרִי־ בֶ֙טֶן֙ לֹֽא־ תָח֥וּס עֵינָֽם׃ עַל־ בָּנִ֖ים ū·qə·šā·ṯō·wṯ nə·‘ā·rîm tə·raṭ·ṭaš·nāh lō yə·ra·ḥê·mū ū·p̄ə·rî- ḇe·ṭen lō- ṯā·ḥūs ‘ê·nām ‘al- bā·nîmWLC · 18

And Babylon, the jewel of the kingdoms, the glory of the pride of the Chaldeans, will be overthrown by God like Sodom and Gomorrah.

𐤁𐤁𐤋 𐤑𐤁𐤉 𐤌𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅𐤕 𐤕𐤐𐤀𐤓𐤕 𐤂𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤊𐤔𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤊𐤌𐤄𐤐𐤊𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤎𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤌𐤓𐤄

בָבֶל֙ צְבִ֣י מַמְלָכ֔וֹת תִּפְאֶ֖רֶת גְּא֣וֹן כַּשְׂדִּ֑ים וְהָיְתָ֤ה כְּמַהְפֵּכַ֣ת אֱלֹהִ֔ים אֶת־ סְדֹ֖ם וְאֶת־ עֲמֹרָֽה׃ ḇā·ḇel ṣə·ḇî mam·lā·ḵō·wṯ tip̄·’e·reṯ gə·’ō·wn kaś·dîm wə·hā·yə·ṯāh kə·mah·pê·ḵaṯ ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’eṯ- sə·ḏōm wə·’eṯ- ‘ă·mō·rāhWLC · 19

She will never… be inhabited or settled from generation to generation; no nomad will pitch his tent there, no shepherd will rest his flock there.

𐤋𐤀 𐤋𐤍𐤑𐤇 𐤕𐤔𐤁 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤔𐤊𐤍 𐤏𐤃 𐤃𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤃𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤓𐤁𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤋 𐤔𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤅𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤓𐤁𐤑𐤅 𐤔𐤌

לֹֽא־ לָנֶ֔צַח תֵשֵׁ֣ב וְלֹ֥א תִשְׁכֹּ֖ן עַד־ דּ֣וֹר וָד֑וֹר וְלֹֽא־ עֲרָבִ֔י יַהֵ֥ל שָׁם֙ לֹא־ וְרֹעִ֖ים יַרְבִּ֥צוּ שָֽׁם׃ lō- lā·ne·ṣaḥ ṯê·šêḇ wə·lō ṯiš·kōn ‘aḏ- dō·wr wā·ḏō·wr wə·lō- ‘ă·rā·ḇî ya·hêl šām lō- wə·rō·‘îm yar·bi·ṣū šāmWLC · 20

But desert creatures will lie down there, and howling creatures will fill her houses. vvv Ostriches will dwell there, and wild goats will leap about…

𐤑𐤉𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤓𐤁𐤑𐤅 𐤔𐤌 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤅 𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤏𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤔𐤊𐤍𐤅 𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤓𐤒𐤃𐤅 𐤔𐤌

צִיִּ֔ים וְרָבְצוּ־ שָׁ֣ם אֹחִ֑ים וּמָלְא֥וּ בָתֵּיהֶ֖ם בְּנ֣וֹת יַֽעֲנָ֔ה וְשָׁ֤כְנוּ שָׁם֙ וּשְׂעִירִ֖ים יְרַקְּדוּ־ שָֽׁם׃ ṣî·yîm wə·rā·ḇə·ṣū- šām ’ō·ḥîm ū·mā·lə·’ū ḇāt·tê·hem bə·nō·wṯ ya·‘ă·nāh wə·šā·ḵə·nū šām ū·śə·‘î·rîm yə·raq·qə·ḏū- šāmWLC · 21

Hyenas will howl in her fortresses and jackals in her luxurious palaces. [Babylon’s] time is at hand…, and her days will not be prolonged.
