Chapter 10

Woe to Tyrants

1

Woe to those who enact unjust statutes and issue oppressive decrees,

𐤄𐤅𐤉 𐤄𐤇𐤒𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤇𐤒𐤒𐤉 𐤅𐤌𐤊𐤕𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤌𐤋 𐤊𐤕𐤁𐤅

ה֥וֹי הַחֹֽקְקִ֖ים אָ֑וֶן חִקְקֵי־ וּֽמְכַתְּבִ֥ים עָמָ֖ל כִּתֵּֽבוּ׃ hō·w ha·ḥō·qə·qîm ’ā·wen ḥiq·qê- ū·mə·ḵat·tə·ḇîm ‘ā·māl kit·tê·ḇūWLC · 1

to deprive the poor of fair treatment and withhold justice from the oppressed of My people, to make widows their prey and orphans their plunder.

𐤋𐤄𐤈𐤅𐤕 𐤃𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤃𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤋𐤂𐤆𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤏𐤍𐤉𐤉 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤔𐤋𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤕𐤅𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤁𐤆𐤅

לְהַטּ֤וֹת דַּלִּ֔ים מִדִּין֙ וְלִגְזֹ֕ל מִשְׁפַּ֖ט עֲנִיֵּ֣י עַמִּ֑י לִהְי֤וֹת אַלְמָנוֹת֙ שְׁלָלָ֔ם וְאֶת־ יְתוֹמִ֖ים יָבֹֽזּוּ׃ lə·haṭ·ṭō·wṯ dal·lîm mid·dîn wə·liḡ·zōl miš·paṭ ‘ă·nî·yê ‘am·mî lih·yō·wṯ ’al·mā·nō·wṯ šə·lā·lām wə·’eṯ- yə·ṯō·w·mîm yā·ḇōz·zūWLC · 2

What will you do on the day of reckoning when devastation comes from afar? To whom will you flee for help? Where will you leave your wealth?

𐤅𐤌𐤄 𐤕𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤐𐤒𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤀𐤄 𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤌𐤌𐤓𐤇𐤒 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤉 𐤕𐤍𐤅𐤎𐤅 𐤋𐤏𐤆𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤄 𐤕𐤏𐤆𐤁𐤅 𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤃𐤊𐤌

וּמַֽה־ תַּעֲשׂוּ֙ לְי֣וֹם פְּקֻדָּ֔ה וּלְשׁוֹאָ֖ה תָּב֑וֹא מִמֶּרְחָ֣ק עַל־ מִי֙ תָּנ֣וּסוּ לְעֶזְרָ֔ה וְאָ֥נָה תַעַזְב֖וּ כְּבוֹדְכֶֽם׃ ū·mah- ta·‘ă·śū lə·yō·wm pə·qud·dāh ū·lə·šō·w·’āh tā·ḇō·w mim·mer·ḥāq ‘al- mî tā·nū·sū lə·‘ez·rāh wə·’ā·nāh ṯa·‘az·ḇū kə·ḇō·wḏ·ḵemWLC · 3

Nothing will remain but to crouch among the captives or fall among the slain. Despite all this, His anger is not turned away; His hand is still upraised.

בִּלְתִּ֤י כָרַע֙ תַּ֣חַת אַסִּ֔יר יִפֹּ֑לוּ וְתַ֥חַת הֲרוּגִ֖ים בְּכָל־ זֹאת֙ אַפּ֔וֹ לֹא־ שָׁ֣ב יָד֥וֹ וְע֖וֹד נְטוּיָֽה׃ס bil·tî ḵā·ra‘ ta·ḥaṯ ’as·sîr yip·pō·lū wə·ṯa·ḥaṯ hă·rū·ḡîm bə·ḵāl zōṯ ’ap·pōw lō- šāḇ yā·ḏōw wə·‘ō·wḏ nə·ṭū·yāhWLC · 4

Judgment on Assyria

Woe to Assyria, the rod of My anger; the staff… in their hands is My wrath.

𐤄𐤅𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤓 𐤔𐤁𐤈 𐤀𐤐𐤉 𐤅𐤌𐤈𐤄 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤌 𐤆𐤏𐤌𐤉

ה֥וֹי אַשּׁ֖וּר שֵׁ֣בֶט אַפִּ֑י וּמַטֶּה־ ה֥וּא בְיָדָ֖ם זַעְמִֽי׃ hō·w ’aš·šūr šê·ḇeṭ ’ap·pî ū·maṭ·ṭeh- hū ḇə·yā·ḏām za‘·mîWLC · 5

I will send him against a godless nation; I will dispatch him against a people destined for My rage, to take spoils and seize plunder, and to trample them down… like clay in the streets.

𐤀𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤇𐤍𐤐 𐤁𐤂𐤅𐤉 𐤀𐤑𐤅𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤌 𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤔𐤋𐤋 𐤔𐤋𐤋 𐤅𐤋𐤁𐤆 𐤁𐤆 𐤅𐤋𐤔𐤉𐤌𐤅 𐤌𐤓𐤌𐤎 𐤊𐤇𐤌𐤓 𐤇𐤅𐤑𐤅𐤕

אֲשַׁלְּחֶ֔נּוּ חָנֵף֙ בְּג֤וֹי אֲצַוֶּ֑נּוּ וְעַל־ עַ֥ם עֶבְרָתִ֖י לִשְׁלֹ֤ל שָׁלָל֙ וְלָבֹ֣ז בַּ֔ז וּלְשִׂימוֹ מִרְמָ֖ס כְּחֹ֥מֶר חוּצֽוֹת׃ ’ă·šal·lə·ḥen·nū ḥā·nêp̄ bə·ḡō·w ’ă·ṣaw·wen·nū wə·‘al- ‘am ‘eḇ·rā·ṯî liš·lōl šā·lāl wə·lā·ḇōz baz ū·lə·śī·mō mir·mās kə·ḥō·mer ḥū·ṣō·wṯWLC · 6

But this is not vvv his intention; this is not his plan… For [it is] in his heart to destroy and cut off many… nations.

וְהוּא֙ לֹא־ כֵ֣ן יְדַמֶּ֔ה לֹא־ וּלְבָב֖וֹ כֵ֣ן יַחְשֹׁ֑ב כִּ֚י בִּלְבָב֔וֹ לְהַשְׁמִ֣יד וּלְהַכְרִ֥ית לֹ֥א מְעָֽט׃ גּוֹיִ֖ם wə·hū lō- ḵên yə·ḏam·meh lō- ū·lə·ḇā·ḇōw ḵên yaḥ·šōḇ kî bil·ḇā·ḇōw lə·haš·mîḏ ū·lə·haḵ·rîṯ lō mə·‘āṭ gō·w·yimWLC · 7

“Are not all my commanders kings?” he says.

𐤄𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤇𐤃𐤅 𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓

הֲלֹ֥א יַחְדָּ֖ו שָׂרַ֛י מְלָכִֽים׃ כִּ֖י יֹאמַ֑ר hă·lō yaḥ·dāw śā·ray mə·lā·ḵîm kî yō·marWLC · 8

“Is not Calno… like Carchemish? Is not Hamath… like Arpad? Is not Samaria like Damascus?

𐤄𐤋𐤀 𐤊𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤌 𐤊𐤊𐤓𐤊𐤌𐤉𐤔 𐤋𐤀 𐤇𐤌𐤕 𐤀𐤌 𐤊𐤀𐤓𐤐𐤃 𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤊𐤃𐤌𐤔𐤒

הֲלֹ֥א כַּלְנ֑וֹ אִם־ כְּכַרְכְּמִ֖ישׁ לֹ֤א חֲמָ֔ת אִם־ כְאַרְפַּד֙ לֹ֥א שֹׁמְרֽוֹן׃ כְדַמֶּ֖שֶׂק hă·lō kal·nōw ’im- kə·ḵar·kə·mîš lō ḥă·māṯ ’im- ḵə·’ar·paḏ lō šō·mə·rō·wn ḵə·ḏam·me·śeqWLC · 9

As my hand seized the idolatrous kingdoms whose images [surpassed] those of Jerusalem and Samaria,

𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤋 𐤋𐤌𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤕 𐤅𐤐𐤎𐤉𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤌𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤍

כַּאֲשֶׁר֙ יָדִ֔י מָצְאָ֣ה הָאֱלִ֑יל לְמַמְלְכֹ֖ת וּפְסִ֣ילֵיהֶ֔ם מִירֽוּשָׁלִַ֖ם וּמִשֹּׁמְרֽוֹן׃ ka·’ă·šer yā·ḏî mā·ṣə·’āh hā·’ĕ·lîl lə·mam·lə·ḵōṯ ū·p̄ə·sî·lê·hem mî·rū·šā·lim ū·miš·šō·mə·rō·wnWLC · 10

and as I have done to Samaria and its idols, will I not also do to Jerusalem and her idols?”

𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤋𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤋𐤀 𐤊𐤍 𐤀𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤏𐤑𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤎

כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשִׂ֛יתִי לְשֹׁמְר֖וֹן וְלֶאֱלִילֶ֑יהָ הֲלֹ֗א כֵּ֛ן אֶעֱשֶׂ֥ה לִירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם וְלַעֲצַבֶּֽיהָ׃ס ka·’ă·šer ‘ā·śî·ṯî lə·šō·mə·rō·wn wə·le·’ĕ·lî·le·hā hă·lō kên ’e·‘ĕ·śeh lî·rū·šā·lim wə·la·‘ă·ṣab·be·hāWLC · 11

  • So when the Lord has completed all His work against Mount Zion and Jerusalem, He will say, “I will punish the king of Assyria… for the fruit of his arrogant heart and the proud look in his eyes.

𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤁𐤑𐤏 𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤄𐤓 𐤑𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤀𐤐𐤒𐤃 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤕𐤐𐤀𐤓𐤕 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤓𐤉 𐤂𐤃𐤋 𐤋𐤁𐤁 𐤓𐤅𐤌 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤅

וְהָיָ֗ה כִּֽי־ אֲדֹנָי֙ אֶת־ יְבַצַּ֤ע כָּל־ מַֽעֲשֵׂ֔הוּ בְּהַ֥ר צִיּ֖וֹן וּבִירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם אֶפְקֹ֗ד מֶֽלֶךְ־ אַשּׁ֔וּר וְעַל־ תִּפְאֶ֖רֶת עַל־ פְּרִי־ גֹ֙דֶל֙ לְבַ֣ב ר֥וּם עֵינָֽיו׃ wə·hā·yāh kî- ’ă·ḏō·nāy ’eṯ- yə·ḇaṣ·ṣa‘ kāl- ma·‘ă·śê·hū bə·har ṣî·yō·wn ū·ḇî·rū·šā·lim ’ep̄·qōḏ me·leḵ- ’aš·šūr wə·‘al- tip̄·’e·reṯ ‘al- pə·rî- ḡō·ḏel lə·ḇaḇ rūm ‘ê·nāwWLC · 12

For he says: ‘By the strength of my hand I have done [this], and [by my] wisdom, for I am clever. I have removed the boundaries of nations and plundered their treasures; like a mighty one I subdued their rulers.

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤁𐤊𐤇 𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤁𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤍𐤁𐤍𐤅𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤎𐤉𐤓 𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤋𐤕 𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤅𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤉𐤃𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤊𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤃 𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤌

כִּ֣י אָמַ֗ר בְּכֹ֤חַ יָדִי֙ עָשִׂ֔יתִי וּבְחָכְמָתִ֖י כִּ֣י נְבֻנ֑וֹתִי וְאָסִ֣יר׀ גְּבוּלֹ֣ת עַמִּ֗ים שׁוֹשֵׂ֔תִי וַעֲתִידֹתֵיהֶם כַּאבִּ֖יר וְאוֹרִ֥יד יוֹשְׁבִֽים׃ kî ’ā·mar bə·ḵō·aḥ yā·ḏî ‘ā·śî·ṯî ū·ḇə·ḥā·ḵə·mā·ṯî kî nə·ḇu·nō·w·ṯî wə·’ā·sîr gə·ḇū·lōṯ ‘am·mîm šō·w·śê·ṯî wa·ʿă·ṯī·ḏō·ṯē·hɛm ka·bîr wə·’ō·w·rîḏ yō·wō·šə·ḇîmWLC · 13

My hand reached as into a nest to seize the wealth of the nations. Like one gathering abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth. No… wing fluttered, no beak opened or chirped.’”

𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤊𐤒𐤍 𐤋𐤇𐤉𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤀𐤎𐤐 𐤏𐤆𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤑𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤎𐤐𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤍𐤐 𐤍𐤃𐤃 𐤐𐤄 𐤅𐤐𐤑𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤑𐤐𐤑𐤐

יָדִי֙ וַתִּמְצָ֨א כַקֵּ֤ן׀ לְחֵ֣יל הָֽעַמִּ֔ים וְכֶאֱסֹף֙ עֲזֻב֔וֹת בֵּיצִ֣ים אֲנִ֣י אָסָ֑פְתִּי כָּל־ הָאָ֖רֶץ וְלֹ֤א הָיָה֙ כָּנָ֔ף נֹדֵ֣ד פֶ֖ה וּפֹצֶ֥ה וּמְצַפְצֵֽף׃ yā·ḏî wat·tim·ṣā ḵaq·qên lə·ḥêl hā·‘am·mîm wə·ḵe·’ĕ·sōp̄ ‘ă·zu·ḇō·wṯ bê·ṣîm ’ă·nî ’ā·sā·p̄ə·tî kāl- hā·’ā·reṣ wə·lō hā·yāh kā·nāp̄ nō·ḏêḏ p̄eh ū·p̄ō·ṣeh ū·mə·ṣap̄·ṣêp̄WLC · 14

Does an axe raise itself above the one who swings it? Does a saw boast over him who saws with it? It would be like a rod waving the one who lifts it, [or] a staff lifting him who is not wood!

𐤄𐤂𐤓𐤆𐤍 𐤄𐤉𐤕𐤐𐤀𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤇𐤑𐤁 𐤁𐤅 𐤀𐤌 𐤄𐤌𐤔𐤅𐤓 𐤉𐤕𐤂𐤃𐤋 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤍𐤉𐤐𐤅 𐤔𐤁𐤈 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤐 𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤈𐤄 𐤊𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤑

הַגַּרְזֶ֔ן הֲיִתְפָּאֵר֙ עַ֖ל הַחֹצֵ֣ב בּ֑וֹ אִם־ הַמַּשּׂוֹר֙ יִתְגַּדֵּ֤ל עַל־ מְנִיפ֔וֹ שֵׁ֙בֶט֙ וְאֶת־ כְּהָנִ֥יף מְרִימָ֔יו מַטֶּ֖ה כְּהָרִ֥ים לֹא־ עֵֽץ׃ hag·gar·zen hă·yiṯ·pā·’êr ‘al ha·ḥō·ṣêḇ bōw ’im- ham·maś·śō·wr yiṯ·gad·dêl ‘al- mə·nî·p̄ōw šê·ḇeṭ wə·’eṯ- kə·hā·nîp̄ mə·rî·māw maṭ·ṭeh kə·hā·rîm lō- ‘êṣWLC · 15

Therefore the Lord GOD of Hosts will send a wasting disease among [Assyria’s] stout warriors, and under his pomp will be kindled a fire like a burning flame.

𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤅𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤓𐤆𐤅𐤍 𐤁𐤌𐤔𐤌𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤊𐤁𐤃𐤅 𐤉𐤒𐤃 𐤉𐤒𐤃 𐤊𐤉𐤒𐤅𐤃 𐤀𐤔

לָ֠כֵן הָאָד֜וֹן יְהוָ֧ה צְבָא֛וֹת יְשַׁלַּ֨ח רָז֑וֹן בְּמִשְׁמַנָּ֖יו וְתַ֧חַת כְּבֹד֛וֹ יֵקַ֥ד יְקֹ֖ד כִּיק֥וֹד אֵֽשׁ׃ lā·ḵên hā·’ā·ḏō·wn Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ yə·šal·laḥ rā·zō·wn bə·miš·man·nāw wə·ṯa·ḥaṯ kə·ḇō·ḏōw yê·qaḏ yə·qōḏ kî·qō·wḏ ’êšWLC · 16

And the Light of Israel will become a fire, and its Holy One a flame. In a single day it will burn and devour Assyria’s thorns and thistles.

𐤀𐤅𐤓 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤔 𐤅𐤒𐤃𐤅𐤔𐤅 𐤋𐤋𐤄𐤁𐤄 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤏𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤄 𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤓𐤅

אֽוֹר־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וְהָיָ֤ה לְאֵ֔שׁ וּקְדוֹשׁ֖וֹ לְלֶהָבָ֑ה אֶחָֽד׃ בְּי֥וֹם וּבָעֲרָ֗ה וְאָֽכְלָ֛ה שִׁית֥וֹ וּשְׁמִיר֖וֹ ’ō·wr- yiś·rā·’êl wə·hā·yāh lə·’êš ū·qə·ḏō·wō·šōw lə·le·hā·ḇāh ’e·ḥāḏ bə·yō·wm ū·ḇā·‘ă·rāh wə·’ā·ḵə·lāh šî·ṯōw ū·šə·mî·rōwWLC · 17

The splendor of its forests and orchards, both soul and body, it will completely destroy,… as a sickness consumes a man…

וּכְב֤וֹד יַעְרוֹ֙ וְכַרְמִלּ֔וֹ מִנֶּ֥פֶשׁ וְעַד־ בָּשָׂ֖ר יְכַלֶּ֑ה וְהָיָ֖ה כִּמְסֹ֥ס נֹסֵֽס׃ ū·ḵə·ḇō·wḏ ya‘·rōw wə·ḵar·mil·lōw min·ne·p̄eš wə·‘aḏ- bā·śār yə·ḵal·leh wə·hā·yāh kim·sōs nō·sêsWLC · 18

The remaining trees of its forests will be so few that a child could count them.

A Remnant Shall Return

  • On that day the remnant of Israel and the survivors of the house of Jacob will no longer… depend on him who struck them, but they will truly rely on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.

וְהָיָ֣ה׀ הַה֗וּא בַּיּ֣וֹם שְׁאָ֤ר יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וּפְלֵיטַ֣ת בֵּֽית־ יַעֲקֹ֔ב לֹֽא־ יוֹסִ֨יף ע֜וֹד לְהִשָּׁעֵ֖ן עַל־ מַכֵּ֑הוּ בֶּאֱמֶֽת׃ וְנִשְׁעַ֗ן עַל־ יְהוָ֛ה קְד֥וֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל wə·hā·yāh ha·hū bay·yō·wm šə·’ār yiś·rā·’êl ū·p̄ə·lê·ṭaṯ bêṯ- ya·‘ă·qōḇ lō- yō·w·sîp̄ ‘ō·wḏ lə·hiš·šā·‘ên ‘al- mak·kê·hū be·’ĕ·meṯ wə·niš·‘an ‘al- Yah·weh qə·ḏō·wōš yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 20

A remnant will return a remnant of Jacob— to the Mighty God.

Though… your people, O Israel, be like the sand of the sea, only a remnant will return Destruction has been decreed, overflowing with righteousness.

For the Lord GOD of Hosts will carry out the destruction decreed upon the whole land.

כִּ֥י אֲדֹנָ֤י יְהוִה֙ צְבָא֔וֹת עֹשֶׂ֖ה כָלָ֖ה וְנֶחֱרָצָ֑ה בְּקֶ֥רֶב כָּל־ הָאָֽרֶץ׃ס kî ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ‘ō·śeh ḵā·lāh wə·ne·ḥĕ·rā·ṣāh bə·qe·reḇ kāl- hā·’ā·reṣWLC · 23

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD of Hosts says: “O My people who dwell in Zion, do not fear Assyria, who strikes you with a rod and lifts his staff against you as the Egyptians did.

לָכֵ֗ן כֹּֽה־ אֲדֹנָ֤י יְהוִה֙ צְבָא֔וֹת אָמַ֞ר עַמִּ֛י יֹשֵׁ֥ב צִיּ֖וֹן אַל־ תִּירָ֥א מֵֽאַשּׁ֑וּר יַכֶּ֔כָּה בַּשֵּׁ֣בֶט יִשָּֽׂא־ וּמַטֵּ֥הוּ עָלֶ֖יךָ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ בְּדֶ֥רֶךְ lā·ḵên kōh- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ā·mar ‘am·mî yō·šêḇ ṣî·yō·wn ’al- tî·rā mê·’aš·šūr yak·kek·kāh baš·šê·ḇeṭ yiś·śā- ū·maṭ·ṭê·hū ‘ā·le·ḵā miṣ·rā·yim bə·ḏe·reḵWLC · 24

For in just a little while… My fury [against you] will subside, and My anger will turn to their destruction.”

כִּי־ ע֖וֹד מְעַ֣ט מִזְעָ֑ר זַ֔עַם וְכָ֣לָה וְאַפִּ֖י עַל־ תַּבְלִיתָֽם׃ kî- ‘ō·wḏ mə·‘aṭ miz·‘ār za·‘am wə·ḵā·lāh wə·’ap·pî ‘al- taḇ·lî·ṯāmWLC · 25

And the LORD of Hosts will brandish a whip against them, as when He struck Midian at the rock of Oreb. He will raise… His staff over the sea, as He did in Egypt.

  • On that day the burden will be lifted from your shoulders, and the yoke from your neck. The yoke will be broken because your neck will be too large.

They have crossed at the ford: “We will spend the night at Geba.” Ramah trembles; Gibeah of Saul flees.

Cry aloud…, O Daughter of Gallim! Listen, O Laishah! O wretched Anathoth!

Madmenah flees; the people of Gebim take refuge.

מַדְמֵנָ֑ה נָדְדָ֖ה יֹשְׁבֵ֥י הַגֵּבִ֖ים הֵעִֽיזוּ׃ maḏ·mê·nāh nā·ḏə·ḏāh yō·šə·ḇê hag·gê·ḇîm hê·‘î·zūWLC · 31

Yet today they will halt at Nob, shaking a fist at the mount of Daughter Zion, at the hill of Jerusalem.

ע֥וֹד הַיּ֖וֹם לַֽעֲמֹ֑ד בְּנֹ֣ב יְנֹפֵ֤ף יָדוֹ֙ הַ֣ר בֵּית צִיּ֔וֹן גִּבְעַ֖ת יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ס ‘ō·wḏ hay·yō·wm la·‘ă·mōḏ bə·nōḇ yə·nō·p̄êp̄ yā·ḏōw har bēṯ ṣî·yō·wn giḇ·‘aṯ yə·rū·šā·limWLC · 32

Behold, the Lord GOD of Hosts will lop off the branches with terrifying power. The tall trees will be cut down, the lofty ones will be felled.

הִנֵּ֤ה הָאָדוֹן֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת מְסָעֵ֥ף פֻּארָ֖ה בְּמַעֲרָצָ֑ה וְרָמֵ֤י הַקּוֹמָה֙ גְּדוּעִ֔ים וְהַגְּבֹהִ֖ים יִשְׁפָּֽלוּ׃ hin·nêh hā·’ā·ḏō·wn Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ mə·sā·‘êp̄ pu·rāh bə·ma·‘ă·rā·ṣāh wə·rā·mê haq·qō·w·māh gə·ḏū·‘îm wə·hag·gə·ḇō·hîm yiš·pā·lūWLC · 33

He will clear the forest thickets with an axe, and Lebanon will fall before the Mighty One.
