To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven:

a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot…,

a time to cast away stones and a time to gather stones {together}, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,

a time to search and a time to count as lost, a time to keep and a time to discard,

What does the worker gain from his toil?

I have seen the burden that God has laid upon the sons of men to occupy them.

רָאִ֣יתִי אֶת־ הָֽעִנְיָ֗ן אֲשֶׁ֨ר אֱלֹהִ֛ים נָתַ֧ן לִבְנֵ֥י הָאָדָ֖ם לַעֲנ֥וֹת בּֽוֹ׃ rā·’î·ṯî ’eṯ- hā·‘in·yān ’ă·šer ’ĕ·lō·hîm nā·ṯan liḇ·nê hā·’ā·ḏām la·‘ă·nō·wṯ bōw — WLC · 10

- He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts [of men], yet [they] cannot fathom the work that God has done from beginning to end.

I know that there is nothing better for them than… to rejoice and do good while they live,

יָדַ֕עְתִּי כִּ֛י אֵ֥ין ט֖וֹב בָּ֑ם כִּ֣י אִם־ לִשְׂמ֔וֹחַ וְלַעֲשׂ֥וֹת ט֖וֹב בְּחַיָּֽיו׃ yā·ḏa‘·tî kî ’ên ṭō·wḇ bām kî ’im- liś·mō·w·aḥ wə·la·‘ă·śō·wṯ ṭō·wḇ bə·ḥay·yāw — WLC · 12

and also that every man should eat and drink and find satisfaction in all his labor— this is the gift of God.

וְגַ֤ם כָּל־ הָאָדָם֙ שֶׁיֹּאכַ֣ל וְשָׁתָ֔ה וְרָאָ֥ה ט֖וֹב בְּכָל־ עֲמָל֑וֹ הִֽיא׃ מַתַּ֥ת אֱלֹהִ֖ים wə·ḡam kāl- hā·’ā·ḏām še·yō·ḵal wə·šā·ṯāh wə·rā·’āh ṭō·wḇ bə·ḵāl ‘ă·mā·lōw hî mat·taṯ ’ĕ·lō·hîm — WLC · 13

I know that everything God… does endures forever…; nothing can be added to it or taken from it… God does [it] so that they should fear Him.

What exists has already… been, and what will be has already been, for God will call to account what has passed.

Furthermore, I saw under the sun that in the place of judgment there is wickedness, and in the place of righteousness there is wickedness.

I said in my heart, “God will judge the righteous and the wicked, since there is a time for every activity… and every deed…”

I said to myself, “As for… the sons of men, God tests them so that they may see for themselves that they… are but beasts.”

אֲנִי֙ אָמַ֤רְתִּֽי בְּלִבִּ֔י עַל־ דִּבְרַת֙ בְּנֵ֣י הָאָדָ֔ם הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים לְבָרָ֖ם וְלִרְא֕וֹת שְׁהֶם־ הֵ֖מָּה לָהֶֽם׃ בְּהֵמָ֥ה ’ă·nî ’ā·mar·tî bə·lib·bî ‘al- diḇ·raṯ bə·nê hā·’ā·ḏām hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm lə·ḇā·rām wə·lir·’ō·wṯ šə·hem- hêm·māh lā·hem bə·hê·māh — WLC · 18

For the fates vvv of [both] men [and] beasts… are the same As one dies, so dies the other— they all have the same breath. Man has no advantage over the animals, since everything is futile.

כִּי֩ מִקְרֶ֨ה בְֽנֵי־ הָאָדָ֜ם וּמִקְרֶ֣ה הַבְּהֵמָ֗ה וּמִקְרֶ֤ה אֶחָד֙ לָהֶ֔ם זֶה֙ כְּמ֥וֹת כֵּ֣ן מ֣וֹת זֶ֔ה לַכֹּ֑ל אֶחָ֖ד וְר֥וּחַ הָאָדָ֤ם אָ֔יִן וּמוֹתַ֨ר מִן־ הַבְּהֵמָה֙ כִּ֥י הַכֹּ֖ל הָֽבֶל׃ kî miq·reh ḇə·nê- hā·’ā·ḏām ū·miq·reh hab·bə·hê·māh ū·miq·reh ’e·ḥāḏ lā·hem zeh kə·mō·wṯ kên mō·wṯ zeh lak·kōl ’e·ḥāḏ wə·rū·aḥ hā·’ā·ḏām ’ā·yin ū·mō·w·ṯar min- hab·bə·hê·māh kî hak·kōl hā·ḇel — WLC · 19

All go to one place; all come from dust, and all return to dust.

הַכֹּ֥ל הוֹלֵ֖ךְ אֶל־ אֶחָ֑ד מָק֣וֹם הַכֹּל֙ הָיָ֣ה מִן־ הֶֽעָפָ֔ר וְהַכֹּ֖ל שָׁ֥ב אֶל־ הֶעָפָֽר׃ hak·kōl hō·w·lêḵ ’el- ’e·ḥāḏ mā·qō·wm hak·kōl hā·yāh min- he·‘ā·p̄ār wə·hak·kōl šāḇ ’el- he·‘ā·p̄ār — WLC · 20

Who knows if the spirit of man… rises… upward and the spirit of the animal descends… into the earth?

I have seen that there is nothing better for a man than to enjoy his work, because that is his lot. For who can bring him to see what will come after him?
