Chapter 22

A Good Name

1

A good name is more desirable than great riches; favor is better than silver and gold.

𐤔𐤌 𐤍𐤁𐤇𐤓 𐤓𐤁 𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤓 𐤇𐤍 𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤌𐤊𐤎𐤐 𐤅𐤌𐤆𐤄𐤁

שֵׁ֭ם נִבְחָ֣ר רָ֑ב מֵעֹ֣שֶׁר חֵ֣ן טֽוֹב׃ מִכֶּ֥סֶף וּ֝מִזָּהָ֗ב šēm niḇ·ḥār rāḇ mê·‘ō·šer ḥên ṭō·wḇ mik·ke·sep̄ ū·miz·zā·hāḇWLC · 1

The rich and the poor have this in common: The LORD [is] Maker of them all.

𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤓𐤔 𐤍𐤐𐤂𐤔𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤊𐤋𐤌

עָשִׁ֣יר וָרָ֣שׁ נִפְגָּ֑שׁוּ יְהוָֽה׃ עֹשֵׂ֖ה כֻלָּ֣ם ‘ā·šîr wā·rāš nip̄·gā·šū Yah·weh ‘ō·śêh ḵul·lāmWLC · 2

The prudent see danger and take cover, but the simple keep going and suffer the consequences.

עָר֤וּם׀ רָאָ֣ה רָעָ֣ה וְיִסָּתֵר וּ֝פְתָיִ֗ים עָבְר֥וּ וְֽנֶעֱנָֽשׁוּ׃ ‘ā·rūm rā·’āh rā·‘āh wə·yis·så̄·ṯēr ū·p̄ə·ṯā·yîm ‘ā·ḇə·rū wə·ne·‘ĕ·nā·šūWLC · 3

The rewards of humility [and] the fear of the LORD [are] wealth and honor and life.

𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤏𐤍𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤓 𐤅𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤃 𐤅𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤌

עֵ֣קֶב עֲ֭נָוָה יִרְאַ֣ת יְהוָ֑ה עֹ֖שֶׁר וְכָב֣וֹד וְחַיִּֽים׃ ‘ê·qeḇ ‘ă·nā·wāh yir·’aṯ Yah·weh ‘ō·šer wə·ḵā·ḇō·wḏ wə·ḥay·yîmWLC · 4

Thorns and snares [lie] on the path of the perverse; he who guards his soul stays far from them.

צִנִּ֣ים פַּ֭חִים בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ עִקֵּ֑שׁ שׁוֹמֵ֥ר נַ֝פְשׁ֗וֹ יִרְחַ֥ק מֵהֶֽם׃ ṣin·nîm pa·ḥîm bə·ḏe·reḵ ‘iq·qêš šō·w·mêr nap̄·šōw yir·ḥaq mê·hemWLC · 5

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

חֲנֹ֣ךְ לַ֭נַּעַר עַל־ דַרְכּ֑וֹ פִּ֣י גַּ֥ם כִּֽי־ יַ֝זְקִ֗ין לֹֽא־ יָס֥וּר מִמֶּֽנָּה׃ ḥă·nōḵ lan·na·‘ar ‘al- ḏar·kōw pî gam kî- yaz·qîn lō- yā·sūr mim·men·nāhWLC · 6

The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower… is slave to the lender.

עָ֭שִׁיר יִמְשׁ֑וֹל בְּרָשִׁ֣ים לֹ֝וֶ֗ה לְאִ֣ישׁ וְעֶ֥בֶד מַלְוֶֽה׃ ‘ā·šîr yim·šō·wl bə·rā·šîm lō·weh lə·’îš wə·‘e·ḇeḏ mal·wehWLC · 7

He who sows injustice will reap disaster…, and the rod of his fury will be destroyed.

זוֹרֵ֣עַ עַ֭וְלָה יִקְצוֹר אָ֑וֶן וְשֵׁ֖בֶט עֶבְרָת֣וֹ יִכְלֶֽה׃ zō·w·rê·a‘ ‘aw·lāh yiq·ṣōr ’ā·wen wə·šê·ḇeṭ ‘eḇ·rā·ṯōw yiḵ·lehWLC · 8

A generous [man]… will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor.

𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤏𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤉𐤁𐤓𐤊 𐤊𐤉 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤌𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤅 𐤋𐤃𐤋

טֽוֹב־ עַ֭יִן ה֣וּא יְבֹרָ֑ךְ כִּֽי־ נָתַ֖ן מִלַּחְמ֣וֹ לַדָּֽל׃ ṭō·wḇ- ‘a·yin hū yə·ḇō·rāḵ kî- nā·ṯan mil·laḥ·mōw lad·dālWLC · 9

Drive out the mocker, and conflict will depart; even quarreling and insults will cease.

גָּ֣רֵֽשׁ לֵ֭ץ מָד֑וֹן וְיֵצֵ֣א דִּ֣ין וְקָלֽוֹן׃ וְ֝יִשְׁבֹּ֗ת gā·rêš lêṣ mā·ḏō·wn wə·yê·ṣê dîn wə·qā·lō·wn wə·yiš·bōṯWLC · 10

He who loves a pure heart… and gracious lips [will have] the king for a friend.

אֹהֵ֥ב טְהוֹר לֵ֑ב חֵ֥ן שְׂ֝פָתָ֗יו מֶֽלֶךְ׃ רֵעֵ֥הוּ ’ō·hêḇ ṭə·hōr lêḇ ḥên śə·p̲ā·t̲āyw me·leḵ rê·‘ê·hūWLC · 11

The LORD’s eyes keep watch over knowledge, but He frustrates the words of the faithless.

יְ֭הוָה עֵינֵ֣י נָ֣צְרוּ דָ֑עַת וַ֝יְסַלֵּ֗ף דִּבְרֵ֥י בֹגֵֽד׃ Yah·weh ‘ê·nê nā·ṣə·rū ḏā·‘aṯ way·sal·lêp̄ diḇ·rê ḇō·ḡêḏWLC · 12

The slacker says, “[There is] a lion outside! I will be slain in the streets!”

עָ֭צֵל אָמַ֣ר אֲרִ֣י בַח֑וּץ אֵֽרָצֵֽחַ׃ בְּת֥וֹךְ רְ֝חֹב֗וֹת ‘ā·ṣêl ’ā·mar ’ă·rî ḇa·ḥūṣ ’ê·rā·ṣê·aḥ bə·ṯō·wḵ rə·ḥō·ḇō·wṯWLC · 13

14

The mouth of an adulteress is a deep pit; he who is under the wrath of the LORD will fall into it.

Foolishness [is] bound up in the heart of a child, [but] the rod of discipline drives it far from him.

אִ֭וֶּלֶת קְשׁוּרָ֣ה בְלֶב־ נָ֑עַר שֵׁ֥בֶט מ֝וּסָ֗ר יַרְחִיקֶ֥נָּה מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ ’iw·we·leṯ qə·šū·rāh ḇə·leḇ- nā·‘ar šê·ḇeṭ mū·sār yar·ḥî·qen·nāh mim·men·nūWLC · 15

Oppressing the poor to enrich oneself or giving gifts to the rich [will] surely lead to poverty.

Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise— apply your mind to my knowledge—

הַ֥ט אָזְנְךָ֗ וּ֭שְׁמַע דִּבְרֵ֣י חֲכָמִ֑ים תָּשִׁ֥ית וְ֝לִבְּךָ֗ לְדַעְתִּֽי׃ haṭ ’ā·zə·nə·ḵā ū·šə·ma‘ diḇ·rê ḥă·ḵā·mîm tā·šîṯ wə·lib·bə·ḵā lə·ḏa‘·tîWLC · 17

for it is pleasing when you keep them within you… and they are constantly on your lips.

כִּֽי־ נָ֭עִים כִּֽי־ תִשְׁמְרֵ֣ם בְּבִטְנֶ֑ךָ יִכֹּ֥נוּ יַ֝חְדָּ֗ו עַל־ שְׂפָתֶֽיךָ׃ kî- nā·‘îm kî- ṯiš·mə·rêm bə·ḇiṭ·ne·ḵā yik·kō·nū yaḥ·dāw ‘al- śə·p̄ā·ṯe·ḵāWLC · 18

So that your trust may be in the LORD, I instruct you today— yes, you.

Have I not written for you thirty sayings about counsel and knowledge,

הֲלֹ֤א כָתַ֣בְתִּי לְ֭ךָ שִׁלְשׁוֹם בְּמ֖וֹעֵצֹ֣ת וָדָֽעַת׃ hă·lō ḵā·ṯaḇ·tî lə·ḵā šil·šōm bə·mō·w·‘ê·ṣōṯ wā·ḏā·‘aṯWLC · 20

to show you true and reliable words, that you may soundly answer those who sent you?

Saying 2

Do not rob a poor man because he is poor, and do not crush the afflicted at the gate,

for the LORD will take up their case and will plunder those who rob them…

Saying 3

Do not make friends with an angry man, and do not associate with a hot-tempered man,

or you may learn his ways and entangle yourself in a snare.

Saying 4

Do not be one who gives pledges…, who puts up security for debts.

If you have nothing with which to pay, why should your bed be taken from under you?

Saying 5

Do not move an ancient boundary stone which your fathers have placed.

Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will be stationed in the presence of kings; he will not stand before obscure men.
