A Gentle Answer Turns Away Wrath

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouth of the fool spouts folly.

The eyes of the LORD are in every place, observing the evil and the good.

𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤑𐤐𐤅𐤕 𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤈𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤌

עֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה בְּֽכָל־ מָ֭קוֹם צֹ֝פ֗וֹת רָעִ֥ים וטוֹבִֽים׃ ‘ê·nê Yah·weh bə·ḵāl mā·qō·wm ṣō·p̄ō·wṯ rā·‘îm w·ṭō·ḇīmWLC · 3

A soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse [tongue] crushes the spirit.

מַרְפֵּ֣א לָ֭שׁוֹן עֵ֣ץ חַיִּ֑ים וְסֶ֥לֶף בָּ֝֗הּ שֶׁ֣בֶר בְּרֽוּחַ׃ mar·pê lā·šō·wn ‘êṣ ḥay·yîm wə·se·lep̄ bāh še·ḇer bə·rū·aḥWLC · 4

A fool rejects his father’s discipline, but whoever heeds correction is prudent.

The house of the righteous has great treasure, but the income of the wicked is trouble.

The lips of the wise spread knowledge, but not so the hearts of fools.

שִׂפְתֵ֣י חֲ֭כָמִים יְזָ֣רוּ דָ֑עַת לֹא־ כֵֽן׃ וְלֵ֖ב כְּסִילִ֣ים śip̄·ṯê ḥă·ḵā·mîm yə·zā·rū ḏā·‘aṯ lō- ḵên wə·lêḇ kə·sî·lîmWLC · 7

The sacrifice of the wicked is detestable to the LORD, but the prayer of the upright is His delight.

The LORD detests the way of the wicked, but He loves those who pursue righteousness.

Discipline is harsh for him who leaves the path; he who hates correction will die.

Sheol and Abaddon lie open before the LORD— how much more… the hearts vvv of men!

שְׁא֣וֹל וַ֭אֲבַדּוֹן נֶ֣גֶד יְהוָ֑ה אַ֝֗ף כִּֽי־ לִבּ֥וֹת בְּֽנֵי־ אָדָֽם׃ šə·’ō·wl wa·’ă·ḇad·dō·wn ne·ḡeḏ Yah·weh ’ap̄ kî- lib·bō·wṯ bə·nê- ’ā·ḏāmWLC · 11

A mocker does not love to be reproved, nor will he vvv consult… the wise.

A joyful heart makes a cheerful countenance, but sorrow of the heart crushes the spirit.

שָׂ֭מֵחַ לֵ֣ב יֵיטִ֣ב פָּנִ֑ים וּבְעַצְּבַת־ לֵ֝ב נְכֵאָֽה׃ ר֣וּחַ śā·mē·aḥ lêḇ yê·ṭiḇ pā·nîm ū·ḇə·‘aṣ·ṣə·ḇaṯ- lêḇ nə·ḵê·’āh rū·aḥWLC · 13

A discerning heart seeks knowledge, but the mouth of a fool feeds on folly.

נָ֭בוֹן לֵ֣ב יְבַקֶּשׁ־ דָּ֑עַת וּפְנֵי כְ֝סִילִ֗ים יִרְעֶ֥ה אִוֶּֽלֶת׃ nā·ḇō·wn lêḇ yə·ḇaq·qeš- dā·‘aṯ ū·p̄ə·nē ḵə·sî·lîm yir·‘eh ’iw·we·leṯWLC · 14

All the days of the oppressed are bad, but a cheerful heart has a continual feast.

Better a little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure with turmoil

טוֹב־ מְ֭עַט בְּיִרְאַ֣ת יְהוָ֑ה רָ֝֗ב מֵאוֹצָ֥ר וּמְה֥וּמָה בֽוֹ׃ ṭō·wḇ- mə·‘aṭ bə·yir·’aṯ Yah·weh rāḇ mê·’ō·w·ṣār ū·mə·hū·māh ḇōwWLC · 16

Better a dish of vegetables where there is love than a fattened ox with hatred

ט֤וֹב אֲרֻחַ֣ת יָ֭רָק שָׁ֑ם וְאַהֲבָה־ אָ֝ב֗וּס מִשּׁ֥וֹר וְשִׂנְאָה־ בֽוֹ׃ ṭō·wḇ ’ă·ru·ḥaṯ yā·rāq šām wə·’a·hă·ḇāh- ’ā·ḇūs miš·šō·wr wə·śin·’āh- ḇōwWLC · 17

A hot-tempered man stirs up strife, but he who is slow to anger calms dispute.

The way of the slacker is like a hedge of thorns, but the path of the upright is a highway.

A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish man despises his mother.

Folly is joy to one who lacks judgment, but a man of understanding walks a straight path.

Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.

A man takes joy in a fitting reply…— and how good is a timely word!

לָ֭אִישׁ שִׂמְחָ֣ה בְּמַעֲנֵה־ פִ֑יו מַה־ טּֽוֹב׃ בְּעִתּ֣וֹ וְדָבָ֖ר lā·’îš śim·ḥāh bə·ma·‘ă·nêh- p̄îw mah- ṭō·wḇ bə·‘it·tōw wə·ḏā·ḇārWLC · 23

The path of life [leads] upward for the wise, that he may avoid going down to Sheol.

אֹ֣רַח חַ֭יִּים לְמַ֣עְלָה לְמַשְׂכִּ֑יל לְמַ֥עַן ס֝֗וּר מָֽטָּה׃ מִשְּׁא֥וֹל ’ō·raḥ ḥay·yîm lə·ma‘·lāh lə·maś·kîl lə·ma·‘an sūr māṭ·ṭāh miš·šə·’ō·wlWLC · 24

The LORD tears down the house of the proud, but He protects the boundaries of the widow.

יְהוָ֑ה יִסַּ֥ח׀ בֵּ֣ית גֵּ֭אִים וְ֝יַצֵּ֗ב גְּב֣וּל אַלְמָנָֽה׃ Yah·weh yis·saḥ bêṯ gê·’îm wə·yaṣ·ṣêḇ gə·ḇūl ’al·mā·nāhWLC · 25

The LORD detests the thoughts of the wicked, but the words of the pure are pleasant [to Him].

יְ֭הוָה תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת מַחְשְׁב֣וֹת רָ֑ע אִמְרֵי־ וּ֝טְהֹרִ֗ים נֹֽעַם׃ Yah·weh tō·w·‘ă·ḇaṯ maḥ·šə·ḇō·wṯ rā‘ ’im·rê- ū·ṭə·hō·rîm nō·‘amWLC · 26

He who is greedy for unjust gain brings trouble on his household, but he who hates bribes will live.

בּוֹצֵ֣עַ בָּ֑צַע עֹכֵ֣ר בֵּ֭יתוֹ וְשׂוֹנֵ֖א מַתָּנֹ֣ת יִחְיֶֽה׃ bō·w·ṣê·a‘ bā·ṣa‘ ‘ō·ḵêr bê·ṯōw wə·śō·w·nê mat·tā·nōṯ yiḥ·yehWLC · 27

The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked blurts out evil.

The LORD is far from the wicked, but He hears the prayer of the righteous.

יְ֭הוָה רָח֣וֹק מֵרְשָׁעִ֑ים יִשְׁמָֽע׃ וּתְפִלַּ֖ת צַדִּיקִ֣ים Yah·weh rā·ḥō·wq mê·rə·šā·‘îm yiš·mā‘ ū·ṯə·p̄il·laṯ ṣad·dî·qîmWLC · 29

30

The light of the eyes cheers the heart, [and] good news nourishes the bones.

מְֽאוֹר־ עֵ֭ינַיִם יְשַׂמַּֽח־ לֵ֑ב ט֝וֹבָ֗ה שְׁמוּעָ֥ה תְּדַשֶּׁן־ עָֽצֶם׃ mə·’ō·wr- ‘ê·na·yim yə·śam·maḥ- lêḇ ṭō·w·ḇāh šə·mū·‘āh tə·ḏaš·šen- ‘ā·ṣemWLC · 30

vvv He who listens to life-giving reproof will dwell among the wise.

He who ignores discipline despises himself, but whoever heeds correction gains understanding.

The fear of the LORD [is] the instruction of wisdom, and humility comes before honor.
