Chapter 1

The Beginning of Knowledge

1

[These are] the proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel,

𐤌𐤔𐤋𐤉 𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

מִ֭שְׁלֵי שְׁלֹמֹ֣ה בֶן־ דָּוִ֑ד מֶ֝֗לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ miš·lê šə·lō·mōh ḇen- dā·wiḏ me·leḵ yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 1

for gaining wisdom and discipline, for comprehending words of insight,

𐤋𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤅𐤎𐤓 𐤋𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤄

לָדַ֣עַת חָכְמָ֣ה וּמוּסָ֑ר לְ֝הָבִ֗ין אִמְרֵ֥י בִינָֽה׃ lā·ḏa·‘aṯ ḥāḵ·māh ū·mū·sār lə·hā·ḇîn ’im·rê ḇî·nāhWLC · 2

[and] for receiving instruction in wise living and in righteousness, justice, and equity.

𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤕 𐤌𐤅𐤎𐤓 𐤄𐤔𐤊𐤋 𐤑𐤃𐤒 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤅𐤌𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌

לָ֭קַחַת מוּסַ֣ר הַשְׂכֵּ֑ל צֶ֥דֶק וּ֝מִשְׁפָּ֗ט וּמֵישָׁרִֽים׃ lā·qa·ḥaṯ mū·sar haś·kêl ṣe·ḏeq ū·miš·pāṭ ū·mê·šā·rîmWLC · 3

To impart prudence to the simple [and] knowledge and discretion to the young,

𐤋𐤕𐤕 𐤏𐤓𐤌𐤄 𐤋𐤐𐤕𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤅𐤌𐤆𐤌𐤄 𐤋𐤍𐤏𐤓

לָתֵ֣ת עָרְמָ֑ה לִפְתָאיִ֣ם דַּ֣עַת וּמְזִמָּֽה׃ לְ֝נַ֗עַר lā·ṯêṯ ‘ā·rə·māh lip̄·ṯā·yim da·‘aṯ ū·mə·zim·māh lə·na·‘arWLC · 4

{let} the wise listen and gain instruction, and the discerning acquire wise counsel

𐤇𐤊𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤐 𐤋𐤒𐤇 𐤅𐤍𐤁𐤅𐤍 𐤉𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤕𐤇𐤁𐤋𐤅𐤕

חָ֭כָם יִשְׁמַ֣ע וְי֣וֹסֶף לֶ֑קַח וְ֝נָב֗וֹן יִקְנֶֽה׃ תַּחְבֻּל֥וֹת ḥā·ḵām yiš·ma‘ wə·yō·w·sep̄ le·qaḥ wə·nā·ḇō·wn yiq·neh taḥ·bu·lō·wṯWLC · 5

by understanding the proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.

𐤋𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤌𐤔𐤋 𐤅𐤌𐤋𐤉𐤑𐤄 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤇𐤉𐤃𐤕𐤌 𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤉𐤌

לְהָבִ֣ין מָ֭שָׁל וּמְלִיצָ֑ה דִּבְרֵ֥י וְחִידֹתָֽם׃ חֲ֝כָמִ֗ים lə·hā·ḇîn mā·šāl ū·mə·lî·ṣāh diḇ·rê wə·ḥî·ḏō·ṯām ḥă·ḵā·mîmWLC · 6

The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of knowledge, [but] fools despise wisdom and discipline.

𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤀𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤆𐤅𐤐 𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤅𐤎𐤓

יִרְאַ֣ת יְ֭הוָה רֵאשִׁ֣ית דָּ֑עַת אֱוִילִ֥ים בָּֽזוּ׃פ חָכְמָ֥ה וּ֝מוּסָ֗ר yir·’aṯ Yah·weh rê·šîṯ dā·‘aṯ ’ĕ·wî·lîm bā·zū ḥāḵ·māh ū·mū·sārWLC · 7

The Enticement of Sin

Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction, and do not forsake… the teaching of your mother.

𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤅𐤎𐤓 𐤕𐤈𐤔 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤅𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤌𐤊

שְׁמַ֣ע בְּ֭נִי אָבִ֑יךָ מוּסַ֣ר תִּ֝טֹּ֗שׁ וְאַל־ תּוֹרַ֥ת אִמֶּֽךָ׃ šə·ma‘ bə·nî ’ā·ḇî·ḵā mū·sar tiṭ·ṭōš wə·’al- tō·w·raṯ ’im·me·ḵāWLC · 8

For they [are] a garland of grace on your head and a pendant around your neck.

𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤕 𐤇𐤍 𐤋𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤊 𐤅𐤏𐤍𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤂𐤓𐤂𐤓𐤕𐤉𐤊

כִּ֤י׀ הֵ֬ם לִוְיַ֤ת חֵ֓ן לְרֹאשֶׁ֑ךָ וַ֝עֲנָקִ֗ים לְגַרְגְּרֹתֶֽיךָ׃ kî hêm liw·yaṯ ḥên lə·rō·še·ḵā wa·‘ă·nā·qîm lə·ḡar·gə·rō·ṯe·ḵāWLC · 9

My son, if sinners entice you, do not yield [to them].

𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤌 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤐𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤁𐤀

בְּנִ֡י אִם־ חַ֝טָּאִ֗ים יְפַתּ֥וּךָ אַל־ תֹּבֵֽא׃ bə·nî ’im- ḥaṭ·ṭā·’îm yə·p̄at·tū·ḵā ’al- tō·ḇêWLC · 10

If they say, “Come along, let us lie in wait for blood, let us ambush the innocent without cause,

𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤍𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤋𐤃𐤌 𐤍𐤑𐤐𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤍𐤒𐤉 𐤇𐤍𐤌

אִם־ יֹאמְרוּ֮ לְכָ֪ה אִ֫תָּ֥נוּ נֶאֶרְבָ֥ה לְדָ֑ם נִצְפְּנָ֖ה לְנָקִ֣י חִנָּֽם׃ ’im- yō·mə·rū lə·ḵāh ’it·tā·nū ne·’er·ḇāh lə·ḏām niṣ·pə·nāh lə·nā·qî ḥin·nāmWLC · 11

let us swallow them alive like Sheol, and whole like those descending into the Pit.

𐤍𐤁𐤋𐤏𐤌 𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤉𐤅𐤓𐤃𐤉 𐤁𐤅𐤓

נִ֭בְלָעֵם חַיִּ֑ים כִּשְׁא֣וֹל וּ֝תְמִימִ֗ים כְּי֣וֹרְדֵי בֽוֹר׃ niḇ·lā·‘êm ḥay·yîm kiš·’ō·wl ū·ṯə·mî·mîm kə·yō·wr·ḏê ḇō·wrWLC · 12

13

We {will} find all manner of precious goods; we {will} fill our houses with plunder.

𐤍𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤒𐤓 𐤄𐤅𐤍 𐤍𐤌𐤋𐤀 𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤔𐤋𐤋

נִמְצָ֑א כָּל־ יָקָ֣ר ה֣וֹן נְמַלֵּ֖א בָתֵּ֣ינוּ שָׁלָֽל׃ nim·ṣā kāl- yā·qār hō·wn nə·mal·lê ḇāt·tê·nū šā·lālWLC · 13

14

Throw in your lot with us; let us all share one purse” —

𐤕𐤐𐤉𐤋 𐤂𐤅𐤓𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤊𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤊𐤉𐤎

תַּפִּ֣יל גּ֭וֹרָ֣לְךָ בְּתוֹכֵ֑נוּ לְכֻלָּֽנוּ׃ יִהְיֶ֥ה אֶ֝חָ֗ד כִּ֥יס tap·pîl gō·w·rā·lə·ḵā bə·ṯō·w·ḵê·nū lə·ḵul·lā·nū yih·yeh ’e·ḥāḏ kîsWLC · 14

15

my son, do not walk the road with them or set foot upon their path.

𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤍𐤏 𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤍𐤕𐤉𐤁𐤕𐤌

בְּנִ֗י אַל־ תֵּלֵ֣ךְ בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ אִתָּ֑ם מְנַ֥ע רַ֝גְלְךָ֗ מִנְּתִיבָתָֽם׃ bə·nî ’al- tê·lêḵ bə·ḏe·reḵ ’it·tām mə·na‘ raḡ·lə·ḵā min·nə·ṯî·ḇā·ṯāmWLC · 15

16

For their feet run to evil, and they are swift to shed blood.

𐤊𐤉 𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤑𐤅 𐤋𐤓𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤄𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤔𐤐𐤊 𐤃𐤌

כִּ֣י רַ֭גְלֵיהֶם יָר֑וּצוּ לָרַ֣ע וִֽ֝ימַהֲר֗וּ לִשְׁפָּךְ־ דָּֽם׃ kî raḡ·lê·hem yā·rū·ṣū lā·ra‘ wî·ma·hă·rū liš·pāḵ- dāmWLC · 16

17

How futile [it is] to spread the net where any bird… can see it!

𐤊𐤉 𐤇𐤍𐤌 𐤌𐤆𐤓𐤄 𐤄𐤓𐤔𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤍𐤐 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉

כִּֽי־ חִ֭נָּם מְזֹרָ֣ה הָרָ֑שֶׁת כָל־ בַּ֥עַל כָּנָֽף׃ בְּ֝עֵינֵ֗י kî- ḥin·nām mə·zō·rāh hā·rā·šeṯ ḵāl ba·ʿal kā·nāp̄ bə·‘ê·nêWLC · 17

18

But they lie in wait for their [own] blood; they ambush their [own] lives.

𐤅𐤄𐤌 𐤉𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤅 𐤋𐤃𐤌𐤌 𐤉𐤑𐤐𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤕𐤌

וְ֭הֵם יֶאֱרֹ֑בוּ לְדָמָ֣ם יִ֝צְפְּנ֗וּ לְנַפְשֹׁתָֽם׃ wə·hêm ye·’ĕ·rō·ḇū lə·ḏā·mām yiṣ·pə·nū lə·nap̄·šō·ṯāmWLC · 18

19

Such [is] the fate of all who are greedy, whose unjust gain takes the lives of its possessors.

𐤊𐤍 𐤀𐤓𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤑𐤏 𐤁𐤑𐤏 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤒𐤇𐤐 𐤍𐤐𐤔 𐤁𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅

כֵּ֗ן אָ֭רְחוֹת כָּל־ בֹּ֣צֵֽעַ בָּ֑צַע אֶת־ יִקָּֽח׃פ נֶ֖פֶשׁ בְּעָלָ֣יו kên ’ā·rə·ḥō·wṯ kāl- bō·ṣê·a‘ bā·ṣa‘ ’eṯ- yiq·qāḥ ne·p̄eš bə·‘ā·lāwWLC · 19

Wisdom Calls Aloud

20

Wisdom calls out in the street, she lifts her voice in the square;

𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤕𐤓𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤇𐤅𐤑 𐤕𐤕𐤍 𐤒𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤁𐤓𐤇𐤁𐤅𐤕

חָ֭כְמוֹת תָּרֹ֑נָּה בַּח֣וּץ תִּתֵּ֥ן קוֹלָֽהּ׃ בָּ֝רְחֹב֗וֹת ḥā·ḵə·mō·wṯ tā·rōn·nāh ba·ḥūṣ tit·tên qō·w·lāh bā·rə·ḥō·ḇō·wṯWLC · 20

21

in the main concourse she cries aloud, at the city vvv gates she makes her speech:

𐤁𐤓𐤀𐤔 𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤕𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤁𐤐𐤕𐤇𐤉 𐤔𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤄

בְּרֹ֥אשׁ הֹמִיּ֗וֹת תִּ֫קְרָ֥א בָּעִ֗יר בְּפִתְחֵ֖י שְׁעָרִ֥ים תֹאמֵֽר׃ אֲמָרֶ֥יהָ bə·rōš hō·mî·yō·wṯ tiq·rā bā·‘îr bə·p̄iṯ·ḥê šə·‘ā·rîm ṯō·mêr ’ă·mā·re·hāWLC · 21

22

“How long, O simple ones, will you love your simple [ways]? How long will scoffers delight… in their scorn and fools hate knowledge?

𐤏𐤃 𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤐𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤀𐤄𐤁𐤅 𐤐𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤑𐤉𐤌 𐤇𐤌𐤃𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤑𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤊𐤎𐤉𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤍𐤀𐤅 𐤃𐤏𐤕

עַד־ מָתַ֣י׀ פְּתָיִם֮ תְּֽאֵהֲב֫וּ פֶ֥תִי וְלֵצִ֗ים חָמְד֣וּ לָהֶ֑ם לָ֭צוֹן וּ֝כְסִילִ֗ים יִשְׂנְאוּ־ דָֽעַת׃ ‘aḏ- mā·ṯay pə·ṯā·yim tə·’ê·hă·ḇū p̄e·ṯî wə·lê·ṣîm ḥā·mə·ḏū lā·hem lā·ṣō·wn ū·ḵə·sî·lîm yiś·nə·’ū- ḏā·‘aṯWLC · 22

23

If you had repented at my rebuke, then surely I would have poured out my spirit on you; I would have made my words known to you.

𐤕𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤅 𐤋𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤇𐤕𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤏𐤄 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤓𐤅𐤇𐤉 𐤀𐤅𐤃𐤉𐤏𐤄 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌

תָּשׁ֗וּבוּ לְֽת֫וֹכַחְתִּ֥י הִנֵּ֤ה אַבִּ֣יעָה לָכֶ֣ם רוּחִ֑י אוֹדִ֖יעָה דְבָרַ֣י אֶתְכֶֽם׃ tā·šū·ḇū lə·ṯō·w·ḵaḥ·tî hin·nêh ’ab·bî·‘āh lā·ḵem rū·ḥî ’ō·w·ḏî·‘āh ḏə·ḇā·ray ’eṯ·ḵemWLC · 23

Because you refused my call, and no one took my outstretched hand,

𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤅𐤕𐤌𐤀𐤍𐤅 𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤌𐤒𐤔𐤉𐤁 𐤍𐤈𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤉𐤃𐤉

יַ֣עַן וַתְּמָאֵ֑נוּ קָ֭רָאתִי וְאֵ֣ין מַקְשִֽׁיב׃ נָטִ֥יתִי יָ֝דִ֗י ya·‘an wat·tə·mā·’ê·nū qā·rā·ṯî wə·’ên maq·šîḇ nā·ṭî·ṯî yā·ḏîWLC · 24

25

because you neglected all my counsel, and wanted none of my correction,

𐤅𐤕𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤅 𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤑𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤅𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤇𐤕𐤉

וַתִּפְרְע֥וּ כָל־ עֲצָתִ֑י אֲבִיתֶֽם׃ לֹ֣א וְ֝תוֹכַחְתִּ֗י wat·tip̄·rə·‘ū ḵāl ‘ă·ṣā·ṯî ’ă·ḇî·ṯem lō wə·ṯō·w·ḵaḥ·tîWLC · 25

26

in turn I will mock your calamity; I will sneer when terror strikes you,

𐤂𐤌 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤇𐤒 𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤃𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤏𐤂 𐤐𐤇𐤃𐤊𐤌 𐤁𐤁𐤀

גַּם־ אֲ֭נִי אֶשְׂחָ֑ק בְּאֵידְכֶ֣ם אֶ֝לְעַ֗ג פַחְדְּכֶֽם׃ בְּבֹ֣א gam- ’ă·nî ’eś·ḥāq bə·’ê·ḏə·ḵem ’el·‘aḡ p̄aḥ·də·ḵem bə·ḇōWLC · 26

27

when your dread comes like a storm, and your destruction like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish overwhelm you…

𐤐𐤇𐤃𐤊𐤌 𐤁𐤁𐤀 𐤊𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤃𐤊𐤌 𐤉𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤊𐤎𐤅𐤐𐤄 𐤑𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤑𐤅𐤒𐤄 𐤁𐤁𐤀 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤌

פַּחְדְּכֶ֗ם בְּבֹ֤א כְשַׁאֲוָה וְֽ֭אֵידְכֶם יֶאֱתֶ֑ה כְּסוּפָ֣ה צָרָ֥ה וְצוּקָֽה׃ בְּבֹ֥א עֲ֝לֵיכֶ֗ם paḥ·də·ḵem bə·ḇō ḵə·ša·ʾă·wå̄h wə·’ê·ḏə·ḵem ye·’ĕ·ṯeh kə·sū·p̄āh ṣā·rāh wə·ṣū·qāh bə·ḇō ‘ă·lê·ḵemWLC · 27

28

Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; they {will} earnestly seek me, but {will} not find me.

𐤀𐤆 𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤏𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤔𐤇𐤓𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤍𐤍𐤉

אָ֣ז יִ֭קְרָאֻנְנִי וְלֹ֣א אֶֽעֱנֶ֑ה יְ֝שַׁחֲרֻ֗נְנִי וְלֹ֣א יִמְצָאֻֽנְנִי׃ ’āz yiq·rā·’un·nî wə·lō ’e·‘ĕ·neh yə·ša·ḥă·run·nî wə·lō yim·ṣā·’un·nîWLC · 28

vvv For they hated knowledge and chose not to fear the LORD.

𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤊𐤉 𐤔𐤍𐤀𐤅 𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤁𐤇𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

תַּ֭חַת כִּי־ שָׂ֣נְאוּ דָ֑עַת בָחָֽרוּ׃ לֹ֣א וְיִרְאַ֥ת יְ֝הֹוָ֗ה ta·ḥaṯ kî- śā·nə·’ū ḏā·‘aṯ ḇā·ḥā·rū lō wə·yir·’aṯ Yah·wehWLC · 29

30

They accepted none of my counsel; they despised all my reproof.

𐤀𐤁𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤋𐤏𐤑𐤕𐤉 𐤍𐤀𐤑𐤅 𐤊𐤋 𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤇𐤕𐤉

אָב֥וּ לֹא־ לַעֲצָתִ֑י נָ֝אֲצ֗וּ כָּל־ תּוֹכַחְתִּֽי׃ ’ā·ḇū lō- la·‘ă·ṣā·ṯî nā·’ă·ṣū kāl- tō·w·ḵaḥ·tîWLC · 30

31

So they {will} eat the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤐𐤓𐤉 𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤌𐤏𐤑𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤌

וְֽ֭יֹאכְלוּ מִפְּרִ֣י דַרְכָּ֑ם יִשְׂבָּֽעוּ׃ וּֽמִמֹּעֲצֹ֖תֵיהֶ֣ם wə·yō·ḵə·lū mip·pə·rî ḏar·kām yiś·bā·‘ū ū·mim·mō·‘ă·ṣō·ṯê·hemWLC · 31

32

For the waywardness of the simple will slay them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them.

𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤕 𐤐𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤄𐤓𐤂𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤎𐤉𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤀𐤁𐤃𐤌
