Chapter 90

BOOK IV Psalms 90–106 From Everlasting to Everlasting

A prayer of Moses the man of God. 1Lord, You have been our dwelling place through all generations.

𐤕𐤐𐤋𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤁𐤃𐤓 𐤅𐤃𐤓

תְּפִלָּה֮ לְמֹשֶׁ֪ה אִֽישׁ־ הָאֱלֹ֫הִ֥ים אֲ‍ֽדֹנָ֗י אַ֭תָּה הָיִ֥יתָ לָּ֗נוּ מָע֣וֹן בְּדֹ֣ר וָדֹֽר׃ tə·p̄il·lāh lə·mō·šeh ’îš- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ’ăḏō·nāy ’at·tāh hā·yî·ṯā lā·nū mā·‘ō·wn bə·ḏōr wā·ḏōrWLC · 1

Before the mountains were born or You brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting You are God.

𐤁𐤈𐤓𐤌 𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤅 𐤅𐤕𐤇𐤅𐤋𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤕𐤁𐤋 𐤅𐤌𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤏𐤃 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤋

בְּטֶ֤רֶם׀ הָ֘רִ֤ים יֻלָּ֗דוּ וַתְּח֣וֹלֵֽל אֶ֣רֶץ וְתֵבֵ֑ל וּֽמֵעוֹלָ֥ם עַד־ ע֝וֹלָ֗ם אַתָּ֥ה אֵֽל׃ bə·ṭe·rem hā·rîm yul·lā·ḏū wat·tə·ḥō·w·lêl ’e·reṣ wə·ṯê·ḇêl ū·mê·‘ō·w·lām ‘aḏ- ‘ō·w·lām ’at·tāh ’êlWLC · 2

You return man to dust, saying, “Return, O sons of mortals.”

𐤕𐤔𐤁 𐤀𐤍𐤅𐤔 𐤏𐤃 𐤃𐤊𐤀 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤅 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤌

תָּשֵׁ֣ב אֱ֭נוֹשׁ עַד־ דַּכָּ֑א וַ֝תֹּ֗אמֶר שׁ֣וּבוּ בְנֵי־ אָדָֽם׃ tā·šêḇ ’ĕ·nō·wōš ‘aḏ- dak·kā wat·tō·mer šū·ḇū ḇə·nê- ’ā·ḏāmWLC · 3

For in Your sight a thousand years are but a day that passes, or a watch of the night.

𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤋𐤐 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤌𐤅𐤋 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤓𐤄 𐤁𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄

כִּ֤י בְּֽעֵינֶ֗יךָ אֶ֪לֶף שָׁנִ֡ים כְּי֣וֹם אֶ֭תְמוֹל כִּ֣י יַעֲבֹ֑ר וְאַשְׁמוּרָ֥ה בַלָּֽיְלָה׃ kî bə·‘ê·ne·ḵā ’e·lep̄ šā·nîm kə·yō·wm ’eṯ·mō·wl kî ya·‘ă·ḇōr wə·’aš·mū·rāh ḇal·lā·yə·lāhWLC · 4

You sweep them away in their sleep; they are like the new grass… of the morning—

𐤆𐤓𐤌𐤕𐤌 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤇𐤑𐤉𐤓 𐤉𐤇𐤋𐤐 𐤁𐤁𐤒𐤓

זְ֭רַמְתָּם שֵׁנָ֣ה יִהְי֑וּ כֶּחָצִ֥יר יַחֲלֹֽף׃ בַּ֝בֹּ֗קֶר zə·ram·tām šê·nāh yih·yū ke·ḥā·ṣîr ya·ḥă·lōp̄ bab·bō·qerWLC · 5

in the morning it springs up new, [but] by evening it fades and withers.

𐤁𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤉𐤑𐤉𐤑 𐤅𐤇𐤋𐤐 𐤋𐤏𐤓𐤁 𐤉𐤌𐤅𐤋𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤔

בַּ֭בֹּקֶר יָצִ֣יץ וְחָלָ֑ף לָ֝עֶ֗רֶב יְמוֹלֵ֥ל וְיָבֵֽשׁ׃ bab·bō·qer yā·ṣîṣ wə·ḥā·lāp̄ lā·‘e·reḇ yə·mō·w·lêl wə·yā·ḇêšWLC · 6

For we are consumed by Your anger and terrified by Your wrath.

𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤋𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤀𐤐𐤊 𐤍𐤁𐤄𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤇𐤌𐤕𐤊

כִּֽי־ כָלִ֥ינוּ בְאַפֶּ֑ךָ נִבְהָֽלְנוּ׃ וּֽבַחֲמָתְךָ֥ kî- ḵā·lî·nū ḇə·’ap·pe·ḵā niḇ·hā·lə·nū ū·ḇa·ḥă·mā·ṯə·ḵāWLC · 7

You have set our iniquities before You, our secret [sins] in the light of Your presence.

𐤔𐤕 𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤍𐤂𐤃𐤊 𐤏𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤓 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊

שַׁתָּ עֲוֺנֹתֵ֣ינוּ לְנֶגְדֶּ֑ךָ עֲ֝לֻמֵ֗נוּ לִמְא֥וֹר פָּנֶֽיךָ׃ ša·tå̄ ‘ă·wō·nō·ṯê·nū lə·neḡ·de·ḵā ‘ă·lu·mê·nū lim·’ō·wr pā·ne·ḵāWLC · 8

For all our days decline in Your fury; we finish our years with a sigh.

𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤐𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤊 𐤊𐤋𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤊𐤌𐤅 𐤄𐤂𐤄

כִּ֣י כָל־ יָ֭מֵינוּ פָּנ֣וּ בְעֶבְרָתֶ֑ךָ כִּלִּ֖ינוּ שָׁנֵ֣ינוּ כְמוֹ־ הֶֽגֶה׃ kî ḵāl yā·mê·nū pā·nū ḇə·‘eḇ·rā·ṯe·ḵā kil·lî·nū šā·nê·nū ḵə·mōw- he·ḡehWLC · 9

The length of our days… is seventy years— or eighty if we are strong…— yet their pride is but labor and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.

יְמֵֽי־ שְׁנוֹתֵ֨ינוּ בָהֶ֥ם שִׁבְעִ֪ים שָׁנָ֡ה שְׁמ֘וֹנִ֤ים שָׁנָ֗ה וְאִ֤ם בִּגְבוּרֹ֨ת׀ וְ֭רָהְבָּם עָמָ֣ל וָאָ֑וֶן כִּי־ חִ֝֗ישׁ גָ֥ז וַנָּעֻֽפָה׃ yə·mê- šə·nō·w·ṯê·nū ḇā·hem šiḇ·‘îm šā·nāh šə·mō·w·nîm šā·nāh wə·’im biḡ·ḇū·rōṯ wə·rā·hə·bām ‘ā·māl wā·’ā·wen kî- ḥîš ḡāz wan·nā·‘u·p̄āhWLC · 10

Who knows the power of Your anger? Your wrath matches the fear You are due.

𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤅𐤃𐤏 𐤏𐤆 𐤀𐤐𐤊 𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤊𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤊

מִֽי־ י֭וֹדֵעַ עֹ֣ז אַפֶּ֑ךָ עֶבְרָתֶֽךָ׃ וּ֝כְיִרְאָתְךָ֗ mî- yō·w·ḏê·a‘ ‘ōz ’ap·pe·ḵā ‘eḇ·rā·ṯe·ḵā ū·ḵə·yir·’ā·ṯə·ḵāWLC · 11

So teach us to number our days, that we may present a heart of wisdom.

𐤊𐤍 𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤏 𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤁𐤀 𐤋𐤁𐤁 𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤄

כֵּ֣ן הוֹדַ֑ע לִמְנ֣וֹת יָ֭מֵינוּ וְ֝נָבִ֗א לְבַ֣ב חָכְמָֽה׃ kên hō·w·ḏa‘ lim·nō·wṯ yā·mê·nū wə·nā·ḇi lə·ḇaḇ ḥāḵ·māhWLC · 12

Return, O LORD! How long will it be…? Have compassion on Your servants.

𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤃 𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤇𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤊

שׁוּבָ֣ה יְ֭הוָה עַד־ מָתָ֑י וְ֝הִנָּחֵ֗ם עַל־ עֲבָדֶֽיךָ׃ šū·ḇāh Yah·weh ‘aḏ- mā·ṯāy wə·hin·nā·ḥêm ‘al- ‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵāWLC · 13

14

Satisfy us in the morning with Your loving devotion, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.

𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤇𐤎𐤃𐤊 𐤅𐤍𐤓𐤍𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤌𐤇𐤄 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤍𐤅

שַׂבְּעֵ֣נוּ בַבֹּ֣קֶר חַסְדֶּ֑ךָ וּֽנְרַנְּנָ֥ה וְ֝נִשְׂמְחָ֗ה בְּכָל־ יָמֵֽינוּ׃ śab·bə·‘ê·nū ḇab·bō·qer ḥas·de·ḵā ū·nə·ran·nə·nāh wə·niś·mə·ḥāh bə·ḵāl yā·mê·nūWLC · 14

15

Make us glad for as many days as You have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen evil.

𐤔𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤊𐤉𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤍𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤔𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤓𐤏𐤄

שַׂ֭מְּחֵנוּ כִּימ֣וֹת עִנִּיתָ֑נוּ שְׁ֝נ֗וֹת רָאִ֥ינוּ רָעָֽה׃ śam·mə·ḥē·nû kî·mō·wṯ ‘in·nî·ṯā·nū šə·nôt̲ rā·’î·nū rā·‘āhWLC · 15

May Your work be shown to Your servants, and Your splendor to their children.

𐤐𐤏𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤄𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌

פָעֳלֶ֑ךָ יֵרָאֶ֣ה אֶל־ עֲבָדֶ֣יךָ וַ֝הֲדָרְךָ֗ עַל־ בְּנֵיהֶֽם׃ p̄ā·‘o·le·ḵā yê·rā·’eh ’el- ‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵā wa·hă·ḏā·rə·ḵā ‘al- bə·nê·hemWLC · 16

May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish for us the work of our hands— yes, establish the work of our hands!

נֹ֤עַם אֲדֹנָ֥י אֱלֹהֵ֗ינוּ וִיהִ֤י׀ עָ֫לֵ֥ינוּ כּוֹנְנָ֥ה עָלֵ֑ינוּ וּמַעֲשֵׂ֣ה יָ֭דֵינוּ כּוֹנְנֵֽהוּ׃ וּֽמַעֲשֵׂ֥ה יָ֝דֵ֗ינוּ nō·‘am ’ă·ḏō·nāy ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū wî·hî ‘ā·lê·nū kō·wn·nāh ‘ā·lê·nū ū·ma·‘ă·śêh yā·ḏê·nū kō·wn·nê·hū ū·ma·‘ă·śêh yā·ḏê·nūWLC · 17
