Chapter 78

I Will Open My Mouth in Parables

1

A Maskil of Asaph. 1Give ear, O my people, to my instruction; listen… to the words of my mouth.

𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤉𐤋 𐤋𐤀𐤎𐤐 𐤄𐤀𐤆𐤉𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤕𐤅𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤄𐤈𐤅 𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉 𐤐𐤉

מַשְׂכִּ֗יל לְאָ֫סָ֥ף הַאֲזִ֣ינָה עַ֭מִּי תּוֹרָתִ֑י הַטּ֥וּ אָ֝זְנְכֶ֗ם לְאִמְרֵי־ פִֽי׃ maś·kîl lə·’ā·sāp̄ ha·’ă·zî·nāh ‘am·mî tō·w·rā·ṯî haṭ·ṭū ’ā·zə·nə·ḵem lə·’im·rê- p̄îWLC · 1

I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden from the beginning,

𐤀𐤐𐤕𐤇𐤄 𐤐𐤉 𐤁𐤌𐤔𐤋 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤏𐤄 𐤇𐤉𐤃𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤒𐤃𐤌

אֶפְתְּחָ֣ה פִּ֑י בְמָשָׁ֣ל אַבִּ֥יעָה חִ֝יד֗וֹת מִנִּי־ קֶֽדֶם׃ ’ep̄·tə·ḥāh pî ḇə·mā·šāl ’ab·bî·‘āh ḥî·ḏō·wṯ min·nî- qe·ḏemWLC · 2

that we have heard and known and our fathers have relayed to us.

𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤃𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤎𐤐𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤍𐤅

אֲשֶׁ֣ר שָׁ֭מַעְנוּ וַנֵּדָעֵ֑ם וַ֝אֲבוֹתֵ֗ינוּ סִפְּרוּ־ לָֽנוּ׃ ’ă·šer šā·maʿ·nû wan·nê·ḏā·‘êm wa·’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·nū sip·pə·rū- lā·nūWLC · 3

We will not hide [them] from their children but will declare to the next generation the praises of the LORD and His might and the wonders He has performed.

𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤊𐤇𐤃 𐤌𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤌𐤎𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤋𐤃𐤅𐤓 𐤕𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤆𐤅𐤆𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤐𐤋𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤄

לֹ֤א נְכַחֵ֨ד׀ מִבְּנֵיהֶ֗ם מְֽ֭סַפְּרִים אַחֲר֗וֹן לְד֥וֹר תְּהִלּ֣וֹת יְהוָ֑ה וֶעֱזוּז֥וֹ וְ֝נִפְלְאוֹתָ֗יו אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָֽׂה׃ lō nə·ḵa·ḥêḏ mib·bə·nê·hem mə·sap·pə·rîm ’a·ḥă·rō·wn lə·ḏō·wr tə·hil·lō·wṯ Yah·weh we·‘ĕ·zū·zōw wə·nip̄·lə·’ō·w·ṯāw ’ă·šer ‘ā·śāhWLC · 4

For He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers to teach to their children,

𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤏𐤃𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤅𐤓𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤑𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤉𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌

וַיָּ֤קֶם עֵד֨וּת׀ בְּֽיַעֲקֹ֗ב שָׂ֤ם וְתוֹרָה֮ בְּיִשְׂרָ֫אֵ֥ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר צִ֭וָּה אֶת־ אֲבוֹתֵ֑ינוּ לְ֝הוֹדִיעָ֗ם לִבְנֵיהֶֽם׃ way·yā·qem ‘ê·ḏūṯ bə·ya·‘ă·qōḇ śām wə·ṯō·w·rāh bə·yiś·rā·’êl ’ă·šer ṣiw·wāh ’eṯ- ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·nū lə·hō·w·ḏî·‘ām liḇ·nê·hemWLC · 5

that the coming generation would know them— even children yet to be born— to arise and tell their [own] children

𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤃𐤅𐤓 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤅 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤅𐤋𐤃𐤅 𐤉𐤒𐤌𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤐𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌

לְמַ֤עַן אַ֭חֲרוֹן דּ֣וֹר יֵדְע֨וּ׀ בָּנִ֣ים יִוָּלֵ֑דוּ יָ֝קֻ֗מוּ וִֽיסַפְּר֥וּ לִבְנֵיהֶֽם׃ lə·ma·‘an ’a·ḥă·rō·wn dō·wr yê·ḏə·‘ū bā·nîm yiw·wā·lê·ḏū yā·qu·mū wî·sap·pə·rū liḇ·nê·hemWLC · 6

that they should put their confidence in God, not forgetting [His] works, but keeping His commandments.

𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤌𐤅 𐤊𐤎𐤋𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤇𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤋𐤉 𐤉𐤍𐤑𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤅

וְיָשִׂ֥ימוּ כִּ֫סְלָ֥ם בֵֽאלֹהִ֗ים וְלֹ֣א יִ֭שְׁכְּחוּ אֵ֑ל מַֽעַלְלֵי־ יִנְצֹֽרוּ׃ וּמִצְוֺתָ֥יו wə·yā·śî·mū kis·lām ḇê·lō·hîm wə·lō yiš·kə·ḥū ’êl ma·‘al·lê- yin·ṣō·rū ū·miṣ·wō·ṯāwWLC · 7

Then they will not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, whose heart was not loyal, whose spirit was not faithful to God.

𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤎𐤅𐤓𐤓 𐤅𐤌𐤓𐤄 𐤃𐤅𐤓 𐤃𐤅𐤓 𐤋𐤁𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤊𐤉𐤍 𐤓𐤅𐤇𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤀𐤌𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤋

וְלֹ֤א יִהְי֨וּ׀ כַּאֲבוֹתָ֗ם סוֹרֵ֪ר וּמֹ֫רֶ֥ה דּוֹר֮ דּ֭וֹר לִבּ֑וֹ לֹא־ הֵכִ֣ין רוּחֽוֹ׃ וְלֹא־ נֶאֶמְנָ֖ה אֶת־ אֵ֣ל wə·lō yih·yū ka·’ă·ḇō·w·ṯām sō·w·rêr ū·mō·reh dō·wr dō·wr lib·bōw lō- hê·ḵîn rū·ḥōw wə·lō- ne·’em·nāh ’eṯ- ’êlWLC · 8

The archers… vvv of Ephraim turned back on the day of battle.

𐤍𐤅𐤔𐤒𐤉 𐤓𐤅𐤌𐤉 𐤒𐤔𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤐𐤊𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤒𐤓𐤁

נוֹשְׁקֵ֥י רוֹמֵי־ קָ֑שֶׁת בְּֽנֵי־ אֶפְרַ֗יִם הָ֝פְכ֗וּ בְּי֣וֹם קְרָֽב׃ nō·wō·šə·qê rō·w·mê- qā·šeṯ bə·nê- ’ep̄·ra·yim hā·p̄ə·ḵū bə·yō·wm qə·rāḇWLC · 9

They failed to keep God’s covenant and refused to live by His law.

𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤌𐤀𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤋𐤊𐤕 𐤅𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤓𐤕𐤅

לֹ֣א שָׁ֭מְרוּ אֱלֹהִ֑ים בְּרִ֣ית מֵאֲנ֥וּ לָלֶֽכֶת׃ וּ֝בְתוֹרָת֗וֹ lō šā·mə·rû ’ĕ·lō·hîm bə·rîṯ mê·’ă·nū lā·le·ḵeṯ ū·ḇə·ṯō·w·rā·ṯōwWLC · 10

They forgot what He had done, the wonders He had shown them.

𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤇𐤅 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤐𐤋𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤓𐤀𐤌

וַיִּשְׁכְּח֥וּ עֲלִילוֹתָ֑יו וְ֝נִפְלְאוֹתָ֗יו אֲשֶׁ֣ר הֶרְאָֽם׃ way·yiš·kə·ḥū ‘ă·lî·lō·w·ṯāw wə·nip̄·lə·’ō·w·ṯāw ’ă·šer her·’āmWLC · 11

He worked wonders before their fathers in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan.

𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤐𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤂𐤃 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤑𐤏𐤍

עָ֣שָׂה פֶ֑לֶא נֶ֣גֶד אֲ֭בוֹתָם בְּאֶ֖רֶץ מִצְרַ֣יִם שְׂדֵה־ צֹֽעַן׃ ‘ā·śāh p̄e·le ne·ḡeḏ ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯām bə·’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim śə·ḏêh- ṣō·‘anWLC · 12

He split the sea and brought them through; He set the waters {upright} like a wall.

𐤁𐤒𐤏 𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤁𐤉𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤁 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤌𐤅 𐤍𐤃

בָּ֣קַע יָ֭ם וַיַּֽעֲבִירֵ֑ם וַֽיַּצֶּב־ מַ֥יִם כְּמוֹ־ נֵֽד׃ bā·qa‘ yām way·ya·‘ă·ḇî·rêm way·yaṣ·ṣeḇ- ma·yim kə·mōw- nêḏWLC · 13

14

He led them with a cloud by day and with a light of fire all night.

𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤇𐤌 𐤁𐤏𐤍𐤍 𐤉𐤅𐤌𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤓 𐤀𐤔 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄

וַיַּנְחֵ֣ם בֶּעָנָ֣ן יוֹמָ֑ם בְּא֣וֹר אֵֽשׁ׃ וְכָל־ הַ֝לַּ֗יְלָה way·yan·ḥêm be·‘ā·nān yō·w·mām bə·’ō·wr ’êš wə·ḵāl hal·lay·lāhWLC · 14

15

He split the rocks in the wilderness and gave [them] drink as abundant as the seas.

𐤉𐤁𐤒𐤏 𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤒 𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤊𐤕𐤄𐤌𐤅𐤕

יְבַקַּ֣ע צֻ֭רִים בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר וַ֝יַּ֗שְׁקְ רַבָּֽה׃ כִּתְהֹמ֥וֹת yə·ḇaq·qa‘ ṣu·rîm bam·miḏ·bār way·yašq rab·bāh kiṯ·hō·mō·wṯWLC · 15

16

He brought streams from the stone and made water flow down like rivers.

𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤑𐤀 𐤍𐤅𐤆𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤎𐤋𐤏 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤓𐤃 𐤊𐤍𐤄𐤓𐤅𐤕

וַיּוֹצִ֣א נוֹזְלִ֣ים מִסָּ֑לַע מָֽיִם׃ וַיּ֖וֹרֶד כַּנְּהָר֣וֹת way·yō·w·ṣi nō·wz·lîm mis·sā·la‘ mā·yim way·yō·w·reḏ kan·nə·hā·rō·wṯWLC · 16

17

But they continued… to sin against Him, rebelling in the desert against the Most High.

𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤉𐤐𐤅 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤋𐤇𐤈𐤀 𐤋𐤅 𐤋𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤑𐤉𐤄 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤍

וַיּוֹסִ֣יפוּ ע֭וֹד לַחֲטֹא־ ל֑וֹ לַֽמְר֥וֹת בַּצִּיָּֽה׃ עֶ֝לְי֗וֹן way·yō·w·sî·p̄ū ‘ō·wḏ la·ḥă·ṭō- lōw lam·rō·wṯ baṣ·ṣî·yāh ‘el·yō·wnWLC · 17

18

They willfully tested God by demanding the food they craved.

𐤁𐤋𐤁𐤁𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤎𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤔𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤌

בִּלְבָבָ֑ם וַיְנַסּוּ־ אֵ֥ל לִֽשְׁאָל־ אֹ֥כֶל לְנַפְשָֽׁם׃ bil·ḇā·ḇām way·nas·sū- ’êl liš·’āl- ’ō·ḵel lə·nap̄·šāmWLC · 18

19

They spoke against God, saying, “Can God really prepare a table in the wilderness?

𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤁𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤏𐤓𐤊 𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤍 𐤁𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓

וַֽיְדַבְּר֗וּ בֵּֽאלֹ֫הִ֥ים אָ֭מְרוּ הֲי֣וּכַל אֵ֑ל לַעֲרֹ֥ךְ שֻׁ֝לְחָ֗ן בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ way·ḏab·bə·rū bê·lō·hîm ’ā·mə·rū hă·yū·ḵal ’êl la·‘ă·rōḵ šul·ḥān bam·miḏ·bārWLC · 19

20

When He struck the rock, water gushed out and torrents raged. But can He also give bread or supply His people with meat?”

𐤄𐤍 𐤄𐤊𐤄 𐤑𐤅𐤓 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤆𐤅𐤁𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤇𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤈𐤐𐤅 𐤉𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤌 𐤕𐤕 𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤊𐤉𐤍 𐤋𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤔𐤀𐤓

הֵ֤ן הִכָּה־ צ֨וּר׀ מַיִם֮ וַיָּז֣וּבוּ וּנְחָלִ֪ים יִ֫שְׁטֹ֥פוּ י֣וּכַל הֲגַם־ תֵּ֑ת לֶ֭חֶם אִם־ יָכִ֖ין לְעַמּֽוֹ׃ שְׁאֵ֣ר hên hik·kāh- ṣūr ma·yim way·yā·zū·ḇū ū·nə·ḥā·lîm yiš·ṭō·p̄ū yū·ḵal hă·ḡam- têṯ le·ḥem ’im- yā·ḵîn lə·‘am·mōw šə·’êrWLC · 20

Therefore the LORD heard and was filled with wrath; so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and His anger flared against Israel,

𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤔 𐤍𐤔𐤒𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤀𐤐 𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

לָכֵ֤ן׀ יְהוָ֗ה שָׁמַ֥ע וַֽיִּתְעַבָּ֥ר וְ֭אֵשׁ נִשְּׂקָ֣ה בְיַעֲקֹ֑ב וְגַם־ אַ֝֗ף עָלָ֥ה בְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ lā·ḵên Yah·weh šā·ma‘ way·yiṯ·‘ab·bār wə·’êš niś·śə·qāh ḇə·ya·‘ă·qōḇ wə·ḡam- ’ap̄ ‘ā·lāh ḇə·yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 21

because they did not believe God… or rely on His salvation.

𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤀𐤌𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤁𐤈𐤇𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤅

כִּ֤י לֹ֣א הֶ֭אֱמִינוּ בֵּאלֹהִ֑ים וְלֹ֥א בָ֝טְח֗וּ בִּֽישׁוּעָתֽוֹ׃ kî lō he·’ĕ·mî·nū bê·lō·hîm wə·lō ḇā·ṭə·ḥū bî·šū·‘ā·ṯōwWLC · 22

23

Yet He commanded the clouds above and opened the doors of the heavens.

𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤅 𐤔𐤇𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤅𐤃𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌

וַיְצַ֣ו שְׁחָקִ֣ים מִמָּ֑עַל פָּתָֽח׃ וְדַלְתֵ֖י שָׁמַ֣יִם way·ṣaw šə·ḥā·qîm mim·mā·‘al pā·ṯāḥ wə·ḏal·ṯê šā·ma·yimWLC · 23

24

He rained down manna for them to eat; He gave them grain from heaven.

𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤈𐤓 𐤌𐤍 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤌𐤅 𐤅𐤃𐤂𐤍 𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌

וַיַּמְטֵ֬ר מָ֣ן עֲלֵיהֶ֣ם לֶאֱכֹ֑ל נָ֣תַן לָֽמוֹ׃ וּדְגַן־ שָׁ֝מַ֗יִם way·yam·ṭêr mān ‘ă·lê·hem le·’ĕ·ḵōl nā·ṯan lā·mōw ū·ḏə·ḡa·nō·šā- šā·ma·yimWLC · 24

25

Man ate the bread of angels; He sent them food in abundance.

𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤑𐤉𐤃𐤄 𐤋𐤔𐤁𐤏

אִ֑ישׁ אָ֣כַל לֶ֣חֶם אַ֭בִּירִים שָׁלַ֖ח לָהֶ֣ם צֵידָ֬ה לָשֹֽׂבַע׃ ’îš ’ā·ḵal le·ḥem ’ab·bî·rîm šā·laḥ lā·hem ṣê·ḏāh lā·śō·ḇa‘WLC · 25

26

He stirred the east wind from the heavens and drove the south wind by His might.

𐤉𐤎𐤏 𐤒𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤄𐤂 𐤕𐤉𐤌𐤍 𐤁𐤏𐤆𐤅

יַסַּ֣ע קָ֭דִים בַּשָּׁמָ֑יִם וַיְנַהֵ֖ג תֵימָֽן׃ בְּעֻזּ֣וֹ yas·sa‘ qā·ḏîm baš·šā·mā·yim way·na·hêḡ ṯê·mān bə·‘uz·zōwWLC · 26

27

He rained meat on them like dust, and winged birds like the sand of the sea.

𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤈𐤓 𐤔𐤀𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤊𐤏𐤐𐤓 𐤊𐤍𐤐 𐤏𐤅𐤐 𐤅𐤊𐤇𐤅𐤋 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌

וַיַּמְטֵ֬ר שְׁאֵ֑ר עֲלֵיהֶ֣ם כֶּעָפָ֣ר כָּנָֽף׃ ע֣וֹף וּֽכְח֥וֹל יַ֝מִּ֗ים way·yam·ṭêr šə·’êr ‘ă·lê·hem ke·‘ā·p̄ār kā·nāp̄ ‘ō·wp̄ ū·ḵə·ḥō·wl yam·mîmWLC · 27

28

He felled them in the midst of their camp, all around their dwellings.

𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤋 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤁 𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄𐤅 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤋𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤍𐤕𐤉𐤅

וַ֭יַּפֵּל בְּקֶ֣רֶב מַחֲנֵ֑הוּ סָ֝בִ֗יב לְמִשְׁכְּנֹתָֽיו׃ way·yap·pêl bə·qe·reḇ ma·ḥă·nê·hū sā·ḇîḇ lə·miš·kə·nō·ṯāwWLC · 28

29

So they ate and were well filled, for He gave them what they craved.

וַיֹּאכְל֣וּ מְאֹ֑ד וַיִּשְׂבְּע֣וּ יָבִ֥א לָהֶֽם׃ וְ֝תַֽאֲוָתָ֗ם way·yō·ḵə·lū mə·’ōḏ way·yiś·bə·‘ū yā·ḇi lā·hem wə·ṯa·’ă·wā·ṯāmWLC · 29

Yet before they had filled their desire, with the food still in their mouths,

𐤋𐤀 𐤆𐤓𐤅 𐤌𐤕𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤌 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤁𐤐𐤉𐤄𐤌

לֹא־ זָר֥וּ מִתַּאֲוָתָ֑ם אָכְלָ֥ם ע֝֗וֹד בְּפִיהֶֽם׃ lō- zā·rū mit·ta·’ă·wā·ṯām ’ā·ḵə·lām ‘ō·wḏ bə·p̄î·hemWLC · 30

God’s anger flared against them, and He put to death their strongest and subdued the young men of Israel.

𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤐 𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤁𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤓𐤂 𐤁𐤌𐤔𐤌𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤉𐤏 𐤅𐤁𐤇𐤅𐤓𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

אֱלֹהִ֨ים׀ וְאַ֤ף עָ֘לָ֤ה בָהֶ֗ם וַֽ֭יַּהֲרֹג בְּמִשְׁמַנֵּיהֶ֑ם הִכְרִֽיעַ׃ וּבַחוּרֵ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל ’ĕ·lō·hîm wə·’ap̄ ‘ā·lāh ḇā·hem way·ya·hă·rōḡ bə·miš·man·nê·hem hiḵ·rî·a‘ ū·ḇa·ḥū·rê yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 31

In spite of all this, they kept on sinning; despite His wonderful works, they did not believe.

𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤅 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤁𐤍𐤐𐤋𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤀𐤌𐤉𐤍𐤅

בְּכָל־ זֹ֭את חָֽטְאוּ־ ע֑וֹד בְּנִפְלְאוֹתָֽיו׃ וְלֹֽא־ הֶ֝אֱמִ֗ינוּ bə·ḵāl zōṯ ḥā·ṭə·’ū- ‘ō·wḏ bə·nip̄·lə·’ō·w·ṯāw wə·lō- he·’ĕ·mî·nūWLC · 32

So He ended their days in futility, and their years in sudden terror.

𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤁𐤄𐤁𐤋 𐤅𐤔𐤍𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤁𐤄𐤋𐤄

וַיְכַל־ יְמֵיהֶ֑ם בַּהֶ֥בֶל וּ֝שְׁנוֹתָ֗ם בַּבֶּהָלָֽה׃ way·ḵal- yə·mê·hem ba·he·ḇel ū·šə·nō·w·ṯām bab·be·hā·lāhWLC · 33

When He slew them, they would seek Him; they repented and searched for God.

𐤀𐤌 𐤄𐤓𐤂𐤌 𐤅𐤃𐤓𐤔𐤅𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤅𐤔𐤇𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋

אִם־ הֲרָגָ֥ם וּדְרָשׁ֑וּהוּ וְ֝שָׁ֗בוּ וְשִֽׁחֲרוּ־ אֵֽל׃ ’im- hă·rā·ḡām ū·ḏə·rā·šū·hū wə·šā·ḇū wə·ši·ḥă·rū- ’êlWLC · 34

And they remembered that God was their Rock, that God Most High was their Redeemer.

𐤅𐤉𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤑𐤅𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤂𐤀𐤋𐤌

וַֽ֭יִּזְכְּרוּ כִּֽי־ אֱלֹהִ֣ים צוּרָ֑ם וְאֵ֥ל עֶ֝לְיוֹן גֹּאֲלָֽם׃ way·yiz·kə·rū kî- ’ĕ·lō·hîm ṣū·rām wə·’êl ‘el·yō·wn gō·’ă·lāmWLC · 35

But they deceived Him with their mouths, and lied to Him with their tongues.

𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤕𐤅𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤐𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤉𐤊𐤆𐤁𐤅 𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤍𐤌

וַיְפַתּ֥וּהוּ בְּפִיהֶ֑ם יְכַזְּבוּ־ לֽוֹ׃ וּ֝בִלְשׁוֹנָ֗ם way·p̄at·tū·hū bə·p̄î·hem yə·ḵaz·zə·ḇū- lōw ū·ḇil·šō·w·nāmWLC · 36

Their hearts were disloyal… to Him, and they were unfaithful… to His covenant.

𐤅𐤋𐤁𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤊𐤅𐤍 𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤀𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕𐤅

וְ֭לִבָּם לֹא־ נָכ֣וֹן עִמּ֑וֹ וְלֹ֥א נֶ֝אֶמְנ֗וּ בִּבְרִיתֽוֹ׃ wə·lib·bām lō- nā·ḵō·wn ‘im·mōw wə·lō ne·’em·nū biḇ·rî·ṯōwWLC · 37

And yet He was compassionate; He forgave [their] iniquity and did not destroy them. He often restrained His anger… and did not unleash vvv His full wrath.

וְה֤וּא רַח֨וּם׀ יְכַפֵּ֥ר עָוֺן֮ וְֽלֹא־ יַ֫שְׁחִ֥ית וְ֭הִרְבָּה אַפּ֑וֹ לְהָשִׁ֣יב וְלֹֽא־ יָ֝עִיר כָּל־ חֲמָתֽוֹ׃ wə·hū ra·ḥūm yə·ḵap·pêr ‘ā·wōn wə·lō- yaš·ḥîṯ wə·hir·bāh ’ap·pōw lə·hā·šîḇ wə·lō- yā·‘îr kāl- ḥă·mā·ṯōwWLC · 38

He remembered that they were but flesh, a passing breeze that does not return.

וַ֭יִּזְכֹּר כִּי־ הֵ֑מָּה בָשָׂ֣ר ה֝וֹלֵ֗ךְ ר֥וּחַ וְלֹ֣א יָשֽׁוּב׃ way·yiz·kōr kî- hêm·māh ḇā·śār hō·w·lêḵ rū·aḥ wə·lō yā·šūḇWLC · 39

How often they disobeyed Him in the wilderness and grieved Him in the desert!

𐤊𐤌𐤄 𐤉𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤏𐤑𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤌𐤅𐤍

כַּ֭מָּה יַמְר֣וּהוּ בַמִּדְבָּ֑ר יַ֝עֲצִיב֗וּהוּ בִּֽישִׁימֽוֹן׃ kam·māh yam·rū·hū ḇam·miḏ·bār ya·‘ă·ṣî·ḇū·hū bî·šî·mō·wnWLC · 40

Again and again they tested God and provoked the Holy One of Israel.

𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤎𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤕𐤅𐤅 𐤅𐤒𐤃𐤅𐤔 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

וַיָּשׁ֣וּבוּ וַיְנַסּ֣וּ אֵ֑ל הִתְווּ׃ וּקְד֖וֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל way·yā·šū·ḇū way·nas·sū ’êl hiṯ·wū ū·qə·ḏō·wōš yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 41

They did not remember His power the day He redeemed them from the adversary,

𐤋𐤀 𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤐𐤃𐤌 𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤑𐤓

לֹא־ זָכְר֥וּ אֶת־ יָד֑וֹ י֝֗וֹם אֲ‍ֽשֶׁר־ פָּדָ֥ם מִנִּי־ צָֽר׃ lō- zā·ḵə·rū ’eṯ- yā·ḏōw yō·wm ’ăšer- pā·ḏām min·nî- ṣārWLC · 42

when He performed His signs in Egypt and His wonders in the fields of Zoan.

𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤅𐤐𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤑𐤏𐤍

אֲשֶׁר־ שָׂ֣ם אֹֽתוֹתָ֑יו בְּ֭מִצְרַיִם וּ֝מוֹפְתָ֗יו בִּשְׂדֵה־ צֹֽעַן׃ ’ă·šer- śām ’ō·ṯō·w·ṯāw bə·miṣ·ra·yim ū·mō·wp̄·ṯāw biś·ḏêh- ṣō·‘anWLC · 43

He turned their rivers to blood, and from their streams they could not drink.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤐𐤊 𐤉𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤆𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤁𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤅𐤍

וַיַּהֲפֹ֣ךְ יְאֹרֵיהֶ֑ם לְ֭דָם וְ֝נֹזְלֵיהֶ֗ם בַּל־ יִשְׁתָּיֽוּן׃ way·ya·hă·p̄ōḵ yə·’ō·rê·hem lə·ḏām wə·nō·zə·lê·hem bal- yiš·tā·yūnWLC · 44

He sent swarms of flies that devoured them, and frogs that devastated them.

𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤁𐤄𐤌 𐤏𐤓𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤑𐤐𐤓𐤃𐤏 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤇𐤉𐤕𐤌

יְשַׁלַּ֬ח בָּהֶ֣ם עָ֭רֹב וַיֹּאכְלֵ֑ם וּ֝צְפַרְדֵּ֗עַ וַתַּשְׁחִיתֵֽם׃ yə·šal·laḥ bā·hem ‘ā·rōḇ way·yō·ḵə·lêm ū·ṣə·p̄ar·dê·a‘ wat·taš·ḥî·ṯêmWLC · 45

He gave their crops to the grasshopper, the fruit of their labor to the locust.

𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤋𐤇𐤎𐤉𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤉𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤄

וַיִּתֵּ֣ן יְבוּלָ֑ם לֶחָסִ֣יל וִֽ֝יגִיעָ֗ם לָאַרְבֶּֽה׃ way·yit·tên yə·ḇū·lām le·ḥā·sîl wî·ḡî·‘ām lā·’ar·behWLC · 46

He killed their vines with hailstones and their sycamore-figs with sleet.

𐤉𐤄𐤓𐤂 𐤂𐤐𐤍𐤌 𐤁𐤁𐤓𐤃 𐤅𐤔𐤒𐤌𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤇𐤍𐤌𐤋

יַהֲרֹ֣ג גַּפְנָ֑ם בַּבָּרָ֣ד וְ֝שִׁקְמוֹתָ֗ם בַּֽחֲנָמַֽל׃ ya·hă·rōḡ gap̄·nām bab·bā·rāḏ wə·šiq·mō·w·ṯām ba·ḥă·nā·malWLC · 47

He abandoned their cattle to the hail and their livestock to bolts of lightning.

𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤂𐤓 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤓𐤌 𐤋𐤁𐤓𐤃 𐤅𐤌𐤒𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤓𐤔𐤐𐤉𐤌

וַיַּסְגֵּ֣ר בְּעִירָ֑ם לַבָּרָ֣ד וּ֝מִקְנֵיהֶ֗ם לָרְשָׁפִֽים׃ way·yas·gêr bə·‘î·rām lab·bā·rāḏ ū·miq·nê·hem lā·rə·šā·p̄îmWLC · 48

He unleashed His fury… against them, wrath, indignation, and calamity— a band of destroying angels.

𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤇𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤐𐤅 𐤁𐤌 𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤆𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤑𐤓𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤕 𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤉

יְשַׁלַּח־ חֲר֬וֹן אַפּ֗וֹ בָּ֨ם׀ עֶבְרָ֣ה וָזַ֣עַם וְצָרָ֑ה מִ֝שְׁלַ֗חַת רָעִֽים׃ מַלְאֲכֵ֥י yə·šal·laḥ- ḥă·rō·wn ’ap·pōw bām ‘eḇ·rāh wā·za·‘am wə·ṣā·rāh miš·la·ḥaṯ rā·‘îm mal·’ă·ḵêWLC · 49

He cleared a path for His anger; He did not spare them from death but delivered their lives to the plague.

יְפַלֵּ֥ס נָתִ֗יב לְאַ֫פּ֥וֹ לֹא־ חָשַׂ֣ךְ נַפְשָׁ֑ם מִמָּ֣וֶת הִסְגִּֽיר׃ וְ֝חַיָּתָ֗ם לַדֶּ֥בֶר yə·p̄al·lês nā·ṯîḇ lə·’ap·pōw lō- ḥā·śaḵ nap̄·šām mim·mā·weṯ his·gîr wə·ḥay·yā·ṯām lad·de·ḇerWLC · 50

He struck all the firstborn of Egypt, vvv the virility in the tents of Ham.

𐤅𐤉𐤊 𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤊𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤅𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤉 𐤇𐤌

וַיַּ֣ךְ כָּל־ בְּכ֣וֹר בְּמִצְרָ֑יִם רֵאשִׁ֥ית א֝וֹנִ֗ים בְּאָהֳלֵי־ חָֽם׃ way·yaḵ kāl- bə·ḵō·wr bə·miṣ·rā·yim rê·šîṯ ’ō·w·nîm bə·’ā·ho·lê- ḥāmWLC · 51

He led out His people… like sheep and guided them like a flock in the wilderness.

𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤏 𐤊𐤑𐤀𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤄𐤂𐤌 𐤊𐤏𐤃𐤓 𐤁𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓

עַמּ֑וֹ וַיַּסַּ֣ע כַּצֹּ֣אן וַֽיְנַהֲגֵ֥ם כַּ֝עֵ֗דֶר בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ ‘am·mōw way·yas·sa‘ kaṣ·ṣōn way·na·hă·ḡêm ka·‘ê·ḏer bam·miḏ·bārWLC · 52

He led them safely, so they did not fear, but the sea engulfed their enemies.

𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤇𐤌 𐤋𐤁𐤈𐤇 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤐𐤇𐤃𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤎𐤄 𐤀𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤌

וַיַּנְחֵ֣ם לָ֭בֶטַח וְלֹ֣א פָחָ֑דוּ וְאֶת־ הַיָּֽם׃ כִּסָּ֥ה א֝וֹיְבֵיהֶ֗ם way·yan·ḥêm lā·ḇe·ṭaḥ wə·lō p̄ā·ḥā·ḏū wə·’eṯ- hay·yām kis·sāh ’ō·wy·ḇê·hemWLC · 53

He brought them to His holy land, to the mountain… His right hand had acquired.

וַ֭יְבִיאֵם אֶל־ קָדְשׁ֑וֹ גְּב֣וּל הַר־ זֶ֝֗ה יְמִינֽוֹ׃ קָנְתָ֥ה way·ḇî·’êm ’el- qā·ḏə·šōw gə·ḇūl har- zeh yə·mî·nōw qā·nə·ṯāhWLC · 54

He drove out nations before them and apportioned… their inheritance; He settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.

𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤓𐤔 𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤉𐤋𐤌 𐤁𐤇𐤁𐤋 𐤍𐤇𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤍 𐤔𐤁𐤈𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌

וַיְגָ֤רֶשׁ גּוֹיִ֗ם מִפְּנֵיהֶ֨ם׀ וַֽ֭יַּפִּילֵם בְּחֶ֣בֶל נַחֲלָ֑ה וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֥ן שִׁבְטֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ בְּ֝אָהֳלֵיהֶ֗ם way·ḡā·reš gō·w·yim mip·pə·nê·hem way·yap·pî·lêm bə·ḥe·ḇel na·ḥă·lāh way·yaš·kên šiḇ·ṭê yiś·rā·’êl bə·’ā·ho·lê·hemWLC · 55

But they tested and disobeyed God Most High, for they did not keep His decrees.

𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤎𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤃𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤅

וַיְנַסּ֣וּ וַ֭יַּמְרוּ אֶת־ אֱלֹהִ֣ים עֶלְי֑וֹן לֹ֣א שָׁמָֽרוּ׃ וְ֝עֵדוֹתָ֗יו way·nas·sū way·yam·rū ’eṯ- ’ĕ·lō·hîm ‘el·yō·wn lō šā·mā·rū wə·‘ê·ḏō·w·ṯāwWLC · 56

They turned back and were faithless like their fathers, twisted like a faulty bow.

𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤂𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤂𐤃𐤅 𐤊𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤍𐤄𐤐𐤊𐤅 𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤒𐤔𐤕

וַיִּסֹּ֣גוּ וַֽ֭יִּבְגְּדוּ כַּאֲבוֹתָ֑ם נֶ֝הְפְּכ֗וּ רְמִיָּֽה׃ כְּקֶ֣שֶׁת way·yis·sō·ḡū way·yiḇ·gə·ḏū ka·’ă·ḇō·w·ṯām neh·pə·ḵū rə·mî·yāh kə·qe·šeṯWLC · 57

They enraged Him with their high places and provoked His jealousy with their idols.

𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤏𐤉𐤎𐤅𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤁𐤌𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤉𐤒𐤍𐤉𐤀𐤅𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤐𐤎𐤉𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌

וַיַּכְעִיס֥וּהוּ בְּבָמוֹתָ֑ם יַקְנִיאֽוּהוּ׃ וּ֝בִפְסִילֵיהֶ֗ם way·yaḵ·‘î·sū·hū bə·ḇā·mō·w·ṯām yaq·nî·’ū·hū ū·ḇip̄·sî·lê·hemWLC · 58

On hearing it, God was furious and rejected Israel completely.

שָׁמַ֣ע אֱ֭לֹהִים וַֽיִּתְעַבָּ֑ר וַיִּמְאַ֥ס בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ מְ֝אֹ֗ד šā·ma‘ ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yiṯ·‘ab·bār way·yim·’as bə·yiś·rā·’êl mə·’ōḏWLC · 59

He abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent He had pitched among men.

𐤅𐤉𐤈𐤔 𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤍 𐤔𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤔𐤊𐤍 𐤁𐤀𐤃𐤌

He delivered His strength to captivity, and His splendor to the hand of the adversary.

𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤏𐤆𐤅 𐤋𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤐𐤀𐤓𐤕𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤑𐤓

וַיִּתֵּ֣ן עֻזּ֑וֹ לַשְּׁבִ֣י וְֽתִפְאַרְתּ֥וֹ בְיַד־ צָֽר׃ way·yit·tên ‘uz·zōw laš·šə·ḇî wə·ṯip̄·’ar·tōw ḇə·yaḏ- ṣārWLC · 61

He surrendered His people to the sword because He was enraged by His heritage.

𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤂𐤓 𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤋𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤄𐤕𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤇𐤋𐤕𐤅

וַיַּסְגֵּ֣ר עַמּ֑וֹ לַחֶ֣רֶב הִתְעַבָּֽר׃ וּ֝בְנַחֲלָת֗וֹ way·yas·gêr ‘am·mōw la·ḥe·reḇ hiṯ·‘ab·bār ū·ḇə·na·ḥă·lā·ṯōwWLC · 62

Fire consumed His young men, and their maidens were left without wedding songs.

𐤀𐤔 𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤄 𐤁𐤇𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤋𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤅𐤋𐤋𐤅

אֵ֑שׁ אָֽכְלָה־ בַּחוּרָ֥יו וּ֝בְתוּלֹתָ֗יו לֹ֣א הוּלָּֽלוּ׃ ’êš ’ā·ḵə·lāh- ba·ḥū·rāw ū·ḇə·ṯū·lō·ṯāw lō hūl·lā·lūWLC · 63

His priests fell by the sword, but their widows could not lament.

𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤍𐤐𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤁𐤊𐤉𐤍𐤄

כֹּ֭הֲנָיו נָפָ֑לוּ בַּחֶ֣רֶב וְ֝אַלְמְנֹתָ֗יו לֹ֣א תִבְכֶּֽינָה׃ kō·hă·nāw nā·p̄ā·lū ba·ḥe·reḇ wə·’al·mə·nō·ṯāw lō ṯiḇ·ke·nāhWLC · 64

Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, like a mighty warrior overcome by wine.

𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤑 𐤊𐤉𐤔𐤍 𐤊𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤓 𐤌𐤕𐤓𐤅𐤍𐤍 𐤌𐤉𐤉𐤍

אֲדֹנָ֑י וַיִּקַ֖ץ כְּיָשֵׁ֥ן׀ כְּ֝גִבּ֗וֹר מִתְרוֹנֵ֥ן מִיָּֽיִן׃ ’ă·ḏō·nāy way·yi·qaṣ kə·yā·šên kə·ḡib·bō·wr miṯ·rō·w·nên mî·yā·yinWLC · 65

He beat back His foes; He put them to… everlasting shame.

𐤅𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤇𐤅𐤓 𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤌𐤅 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤇𐤓𐤐𐤕

וַיַּךְ־ אָח֑וֹר צָרָ֥יו נָ֣תַן לָֽמוֹ׃ ע֝וֹלָ֗ם חֶרְפַּ֥ת way·yaḵ- ’ā·ḥō·wr ṣā·rāw nā·ṯan lā·mōw ‘ō·w·lām ḥer·paṯWLC · 66

He rejected the tent of Joseph and refused… the tribe of Ephraim.

𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤀𐤎 𐤁𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤐 𐤋𐤀 𐤁𐤇𐤓 𐤅𐤁𐤔𐤁𐤈 𐤀𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤌

וַ֭יִּמְאַס בְּאֹ֣הֶל יוֹסֵ֑ף לֹ֣א בָחָֽר׃ וּֽבְשֵׁ֥בֶט אֶ֝פְרַ֗יִם way·yim·’as bə·’ō·hel yō·w·sêp̄ lō ḇā·ḥār ū·ḇə·šê·ḇeṭ ’ep̄·ra·yimWLC · 67

But He chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which He loved.

𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤇𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤁𐤈 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤓 𐤑𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤄𐤁

וַ֭יִּבְחַר אֶת־ שֵׁ֣בֶט יְהוּדָ֑ה אֶֽת־ הַ֥ר צִ֝יּ֗וֹן אֲשֶׁ֣ר אָהֵֽב׃ way·yiḇ·ḥar ’eṯ- šê·ḇeṭ yə·hū·ḏāh ’eṯ- har ṣî·yō·wn ’ă·šer ’ā·hêḇWLC · 68

He built His sanctuary like the heights, like the earth He has established forever.

וַיִּ֣בֶן מִקְדָּשׁ֑וֹ כְּמוֹ־ רָ֭מִים כְּ֝אֶ֗רֶץ יְסָדָ֥הּ לְעוֹלָֽם׃ way·yi·ḇen miq·dā·šōw kə·mōw- rā·mîm kə·’e·reṣ yə·sā·ḏāh lə·‘ō·w·lāmWLC · 69

He chose David His servant and took him from the sheepfolds…;

וַ֭יִּבְחַר בְּדָוִ֣ד עַבְדּ֑וֹ וַ֝יִּקָּחֵ֗הוּ מִֽמִּכְלְאֹ֥ת צֹֽאן׃ way·yiḇ·ḥar bə·ḏā·wiḏ ‘aḇ·dōw way·yiq·qā·ḥê·hū mim·miḵ·lə·’ōṯ ṣōnWLC · 70

from tending the ewes He brought him to be shepherd of His people Jacob, of Israel His inheritance.

מֵאַחַ֥ר עָל֗וֹת הֱ֫בִיא֥וֹ לִ֭רְעוֹת עַמּ֑וֹ בְּיַעֲקֹ֣ב וּ֝בְיִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל נַחֲלָתֽוֹ׃ mê·’a·ḥar ‘ā·lō·wṯ hĕ·ḇî·’ōw lir·‘ō·wṯ ‘am·mōw bə·ya·‘ă·qōḇ ū·ḇə·yiś·rā·’êl na·ḥă·lā·ṯōwWLC · 71

So [David] shepherded them with integrity of heart and guided them with skillful hands.
