Why Have You Rejected Us Forever?

A Maskil of Asaph. 1Why have You rejected us forever…, O God? Why does Your anger smolder against the sheep of Your pasture?

Remember Your congregation, which You purchased long ago and redeemed as the tribe of Your inheritance— Mount Zion,… where You dwell

Turn Your steps to the everlasting ruins, to everything in the sanctuary the enemy has destroyed.

Your foes have roared within Your meeting place; they have unfurled their banners as signs,

like men wielding axes in a thicket of trees
𐤉𐤅𐤃𐤏 𐤊𐤌𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤒𐤓𐤃𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤎𐤁𐤊 𐤏𐤑 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤄
יִ֭וָּדַע כְּמֵבִ֣יא קַרְדֻּמּֽוֹת׃ בִּֽסֲבָךְ־ עֵ֝֗ץ לְמָ֑עְלָה yiw·wā·ḏa‘ kə·mê·ḇî qar·dum·mō·wṯ bi·să·ḇāḵ- ‘êṣ lə·mā·‘ə·lāh — WLC · 5

and smashing all the carvings with hatchets and picks.
𐤅𐤏𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤍 𐤉𐤇𐤃 𐤐𐤕𐤅𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤊𐤔𐤉𐤋 𐤅𐤊𐤉𐤋𐤐𐤕
וְעֵת יַהֲלֹמֽוּן׃ יָּ֑חַד פִּתּוּחֶ֣יהָ בְּכַשִּׁ֥יל וְ֝כֵֽילַפֹּ֗ת wə·ʿēṯ ya·hă·lō·mūn yā·ḥaḏ pit·tū·ḥe·hā bə·ḵaš·šîl wə·ḵê·lap·pōṯ — WLC · 6

They have burned… Your sanctuary to the ground; they have defiled the dwelling place of Your Name.
𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤅 𐤁𐤀𐤔 𐤌𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤊 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤇𐤋𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤍 𐤔𐤌𐤊
שִׁלְח֣וּ בָ֭אֵשׁ מִקְדָּשֶׁ֑ךָ לָ֝אָ֗רֶץ חִלְּל֥וּ מִֽשְׁכַּן־ שְׁמֶֽךָ׃ šil·ḥū ḇā·’êš miq·dā·še·ḵā lā·’ā·reṣ ḥil·lə·lū miš·kan- šə·me·ḵā — WLC · 7

They said in their hearts, “We will crush them completely.” They burned down every place where God met us in the land.

אָמְר֣וּ בְ֭לִבָּם נִינָ֣ם יָ֑חַד שָׂרְפ֖וּ כָל־ מוֹעֲדֵי־ אֵ֣ל בָּאָֽרֶץ׃ ’ā·mə·rū ḇə·lib·bām nî·nām yā·ḥaḏ śā·rə·p̄ū ḵāl mō·w·‘ă·ḏê- ’êl bā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 8

There are no signs for us to see. There is no longer any prophet. And none of us knows how long this will last.

לֹ֥א אֽוֹתֹתֵ֗ינוּ רָ֫אִ֥ינוּ אֵֽין־ ע֥וֹד נָבִ֑יא וְלֹֽא־ אִ֝תָּ֗נוּ יֹדֵ֥עַ עַד־ מָֽה׃ lō ’ō·w·ṯō·ṯê·nū rā·’î·nū ’ên- ‘ō·wḏ nā·ḇî wə·lō- ’it·tā·nū yō·ḏê·a‘ ‘aḏ- māh — WLC · 9

How long…, O God, will the enemy taunt You? Will the foe revile Your name forever?

עַד־ מָתַ֣י אֱ֭לֹהִים צָ֑ר יְחָ֣רֶף אוֹיֵ֖ב יְנָ֘אֵ֤ץ שִׁמְךָ֣ לָנֶֽצַח׃ ‘aḏ- mā·ṯay ’ĕ·lō·hîm ṣār yə·ḥā·rep̄ ’ō·w·yêḇ yə·nā·’êṣ šim·ḵā lā·ne·ṣaḥ — WLC · 10

Why do You withdraw Your strong right hand? Stretch it out… to destroy them!

לָ֤מָּה תָשִׁ֣יב יָ֭דְךָ וִֽימִינֶ֑ךָ מִקֶּ֖רֶב חוֹקְךָ כַלֵּֽה׃ lām·māh ṯā·šîḇ yā·ḏə·ḵā wî·mî·ne·ḵā miq·qe·reḇ ḥō·qə·ḵå̄ ḵal·lêh — WLC · 11

Yet God [is] my King from ancient times, working salvation on the earth.

וֵ֭אלֹהִים מַלְכִּ֣י מִקֶּ֑דֶם פֹּעֵ֥ל יְ֝שׁוּע֗וֹת בְּקֶ֣רֶב הָאָֽרֶץ׃ wê·lō·hîm mal·kî miq·qe·ḏem pō·‘êl yə·šū·‘ō·wṯ bə·qe·reḇ hā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 12

You divided the sea by Your strength; You smashed the heads of the dragons of the sea;

אַתָּ֤ה פוֹרַ֣רְתָּ יָ֑ם בְעָזְּךָ֣ שִׁבַּ֖רְתָּ רָאשֵׁ֥י תַ֝נִּינִ֗ים עַל־ הַמָּֽיִם׃ ’at·tāh p̄ō·w·rar·tā yām ḇə·‘āz·zə·ḵā šib·bar·tā rā·šê ṯan·nî·nîm ‘al- ham·mā·yim — WLC · 13

You crushed the heads of Leviathan; You fed him… to the creatures of the desert.

אַתָּ֣ה רִ֭צַּצְתָּ רָאשֵׁ֣י לִוְיָתָ֑ן תִּתְּנֶ֥נּוּ מַ֝אֲכָ֗ל לְעָ֣ם לְצִיִּֽים׃ ’at·tāh riṣ·ṣaṣ·tā rā·šê liw·yā·ṯān tit·tə·nen·nū ma·’ă·ḵāl lə·‘ām lə·ṣî·yîm — WLC · 14

You broke open the fountain and the flood; You dried up the ever-flowing rivers.

אַתָּ֣ה בָ֭קַעְתָּ מַעְיָ֣ן וָנָ֑חַל אַתָּ֥ה ה֝וֹבַ֗שְׁתָּ אֵיתָֽן׃ נַהֲר֥וֹת ’at·tāh ḇā·qa‘·tā ma‘·yān wā·nā·ḥal ’at·tāh hō·w·ḇaš·tā ’ê·ṯān na·hă·rō·wṯ — WLC · 15

The day is Yours, and also the night; You established the moon and the sun.

י֭וֹם לְךָ֣ אַף־ לְךָ֥ לָ֑יְלָה אַתָּ֥ה הֲ֝כִינ֗וֹתָ מָא֥וֹר וָשָֽׁמֶשׁ׃ yō·wm lə·ḵā ’ap̄- lə·ḵā lā·yə·lāh ’at·tāh hă·ḵî·nō·w·ṯā mā·’ō·wr wā·šā·meš — WLC · 16

You set all the boundaries of the earth; You made the summer and winter.

אַתָּ֣ה הִ֭צַּבְתָּ כָּל־ גְּבוּל֣וֹת אָ֑רֶץ אַתָּ֥ה יְצַרְתָּם׃ קַ֥יִץ וָ֝חֹ֗רֶף ’at·tāh hiṣ·ṣaḇ·tā kāl- gə·ḇū·lō·wṯ ’ā·reṣ ’at·tāh yə·ṣar·tå̄m qa·yiṣ wā·ḥō·rep̄ — WLC · 17

Remember how the enemy has mocked You, O LORD, how a foolish people has spurned Your name.

זְכָר־ זֹ֗את א֭וֹיֵב חֵרֵ֣ף׀ יְהוָ֑ה נָ֝בָ֗ל וְעַ֥ם נִֽאֲצ֥וּ שְׁמֶֽךָ׃ zə·ḵār- zōṯ ’ō·w·yêḇ ḥê·rêp̄ Yah·weh nā·ḇāl wə·‘am ni·’ă·ṣū šə·me·ḵā — WLC · 18

Do not deliver the soul of Your dove to beasts; do not forget the lives of Your afflicted forever.

אַל־ תִּתֵּ֣ן נֶ֣פֶשׁ תּוֹרֶ֑ךָ לְ֭חַיַּת אַל־ תִּשְׁכַּ֥ח חַיַּ֥ת עֲ֝נִיֶּ֗יךָ לָנֶֽצַח׃ ’al- tit·tên ne·p̄eš tō·w·re·ḵā lə·ḥay·yaṯ ’al- tiš·kaḥ ḥay·yaṯ ‘ă·nî·ye·ḵā lā·ne·ṣaḥ — WLC · 19

Consider Your covenant, for haunts of violence fill the dark places of the land.

הַבֵּ֥ט לַבְּרִ֑ית כִּ֥י נְא֣וֹת חָמָֽס׃ מָלְא֥וּ מַחֲשַׁכֵּי־ אֶ֝֗רֶץ hab·bêṭ lab·bə·rîṯ kî nə·’ō·wṯ ḥā·mās mā·lə·’ū ma·ḥă·šak·kê- ’e·reṣ — WLC · 20

Do not let the oppressed retreat in shame; may the poor and needy praise Your name.

אַל־ דַּ֣ךְ יָשֹׁ֣ב נִכְלָ֑ם עָנִ֥י וְ֝אֶבְי֗וֹן יְֽהַלְל֥וּ שְׁמֶֽךָ׃ ’al- daḵ yā·šōḇ niḵ·lām ‘ā·nî wə·’eḇ·yō·wn yə·hal·lū šə·me·ḵā — WLC · 21

Rise up, O God; defend Your cause! Remember how the fool mocks You all day long.

קוּמָ֣ה אֱ֭לֹהִים רִיבָ֣ה רִיבֶ֑ךָ זְכֹ֥ר מִנִּי־ נָ֝בָ֗ל חֶרְפָּתְךָ֥ כָּל־ הַיּֽוֹם׃ qū·māh ’ĕ·lō·hîm rî·ḇāh rî·ḇe·ḵā zə·ḵōr min·nî- nā·ḇāl ḥer·pā·ṯə·ḵā kāl- hay·yō·wm — WLC · 22

Do not disregard the clamor of Your adversaries, the uproar of Your enemies that ascends continually.
