BOOK III Psalms 73–89 Surely God Is Good to Israel

A Psalm of Asaph. 1Surely God [is] good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.

𐤌𐤆𐤌𐤅𐤓 𐤋𐤀𐤎𐤐 𐤀𐤊 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤋𐤁𐤁

מִזְמ֗וֹר לְאָ֫סָ֥ף אַ֤ךְ אֱלֹהִ֗ים ט֭וֹב לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל לְבָרֵ֥י לֵבָֽב׃ miz·mō·wr lə·’ā·sāp̄ ’aḵ ’ĕ·lō·hîm ṭō·wḇ lə·yiś·rā·’êl lə·ḇā·rê lê·ḇāḇWLC · 1

But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled; my steps had nearly slipped.

𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤉 𐤊𐤌𐤏𐤈 𐤍𐤈𐤅𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤊𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤔𐤐𐤊𐤄

וַאֲנִ֗י רַגְלָ֑י כִּ֭מְעַט נָטוּי אֲשֻׁרָֽי׃ כְּ֝אַ֗יִן שֻׁפְּכָה wa·’ă·nî raḡ·lāy kim·‘aṭ nå̄·ṭui ’ă·šu·rāy kə·’a·yin šup·pə·ḵå̄hWLC · 2

For I envied the arrogant [when] I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

𐤊𐤉 𐤒𐤍𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤄𐤅𐤋𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌

כִּֽי־ קִ֭נֵּאתִי בַּֽהוֹלְלִ֑ים אֶרְאֶֽה׃ שְׁל֖וֹם רְשָׁעִ֣ים kî- qin·nê·ṯî ba·hō·wl·lîm ’er·’eh šə·lō·wm rə·šā·‘îmWLC · 3

  • They have no struggle in their death; their bodies are well-fed.

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤇𐤓𐤑𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤀

כִּ֤י אֵ֖ין חַרְצֻבּ֥וֹת לְמוֹתָ֗ם אוּלָֽם׃ וּבָרִ֥יא kî ’ên ḥar·ṣub·bō·wṯ lə·mō·w·ṯām ’ū·lām ū·ḇā·rîWLC · 4

They are free of the burdens others {carry}; they are not afflicted like [other] men.

𐤀𐤉𐤍𐤌𐤅 𐤁𐤏𐤌𐤋 𐤀𐤍𐤅𐤔 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤍𐤂𐤏𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤃𐤌

אֵינֵ֑מוֹ בַּעֲמַ֣ל אֱנ֣וֹשׁ לֹ֣א יְנֻגָּֽעוּ׃ וְעִם־ אָ֝דָ֗ם ’ê·nê·mōw ba·‘ă·mal ’ĕ·nō·wōš lō yə·nug·gā·‘ū wə·‘im- ’ā·ḏāmWLC · 5

Therefore pride is their necklace; a garment of violence covers them.

𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤂𐤀𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤍𐤒𐤕𐤌𐤅 𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤇𐤌𐤎 𐤉𐤏𐤈𐤐 𐤋𐤌𐤅

לָ֭כֵן גַאֲוָ֑ה עֲנָקַ֣תְמוֹ שִׁ֝֗ית חָמָ֥ס יַעֲטָף־ לָֽמוֹ׃ lā·ḵên ḡa·’ă·wāh ‘ă·nā·qaṯ·mōw šît̲ ḥā·mās ya·‘ă·ṭā·p̄ō·ši- lā·mōwWLC · 6

From their prosperity proceeds iniquity; the imaginations of their hearts run wild.

𐤌𐤇𐤋𐤁 𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤌𐤅 𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤁𐤁 𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤅

מֵחֵ֣לֶב יָ֭צָא עֵינֵ֑מוֹ מַשְׂכִּיּ֥וֹת לֵבָֽב׃ עָ֝בְר֗וּ mê·ḥê·leḇ yā·ṣā ‘ê·nê·mōw maś·kî·yō·wṯ lê·ḇāḇ ‘ā·ḇə·rūWLC · 7

8

They mock and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression.

𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤒𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤁𐤓𐤏 𐤌𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤌 𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤏𐤔𐤒

יָמִ֤יקוּ׀ וִידַבְּר֣וּ בְרָ֣ע מִמָּר֥וֹם יְדַבֵּֽרוּ׃ עֹ֑שֶׁק yā·mî·qū wî·ḏab·bə·rū ḇə·rā‘ mim·mā·rō·wm yə·ḏab·bê·rū ‘ō·šeqWLC · 8

They set their mouths against the heavens, and their tongues strut across the earth.

𐤔𐤕𐤅 𐤐𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤁𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤍𐤌 𐤕𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑

שַׁתּ֣וּ פִּיהֶ֑ם בַשָּׁמַ֣יִם וּ֝לְשׁוֹנָ֗ם תִּֽהֲלַ֥ךְ בָּאָֽרֶץ׃ šat·tū pî·hem ḇaš·šā·ma·yim ū·lə·šō·w·nām ti·hă·laḵ bā·’ā·reṣWLC · 9

So their people return to this place and drink up waters in abundance.

𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤁 𐤄𐤋𐤌 𐤉𐤌𐤑𐤅 𐤋𐤌𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤉 𐤌𐤋𐤀

לָכֵ֤ן׀ עַמּ֣וֹ יָשִׁיב הֲלֹ֑ם יִמָּ֥צוּ לָֽמוֹ׃ וּמֵ֥י מָ֝לֵ֗א lā·ḵên ‘am·mōw yå̄·šīḇ hă·lōm yim·mā·ṣū lā·mōw ū·mê mā·lêWLC · 10

The wicked say, “How can God… know? Does the Most High have knowledge?”

𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤉𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤁𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤃𐤏𐤄

וְֽאָמְר֗וּ אֵיכָ֥ה אֵ֑ל וְיֵ֖שׁ יָדַֽע־ בְעֶלְיֽוֹן׃ דֵּעָ֣ה wə·’ā·mə·rū ’ê·ḵāh ’êl wə·yêš yā·ḏa‘- ḇə·‘el·yō·wn dê·‘āhWLC · 11

12

Behold, these [are] the wicked— always carefree as they increase their wealth.

𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤉 𐤄𐤔𐤂𐤅 𐤇𐤉𐤋

הִנֵּה־ אֵ֥לֶּה רְשָׁעִ֑ים ע֝וֹלָ֗ם וְשַׁלְוֵ֥י הִשְׂגּוּ־ חָֽיִל׃ hin·nêh- ’êl·leh rə·šā·‘îm ‘ō·w·lām wə·šal·wê hiś·gū- ḥā·yilWLC · 12

13

Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure…; in innocence I have washed my hands.

𐤀𐤊 𐤓𐤉𐤒 𐤆𐤊𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤁𐤁𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤒𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤇𐤑 𐤊𐤐𐤉

אַךְ־ רִ֭יק זִכִּ֣יתִי לְבָבִ֑י בְּנִקָּי֣וֹן וָאֶרְחַ֖ץ כַּפָּֽי׃ ’aḵ- rîq zik·kî·ṯî lə·ḇā·ḇî bə·niq·qā·yō·wn wā·’er·ḥaṣ kap·pāyWLC · 13

14

For I am afflicted all day long… and punished every morning…

𐤅𐤀𐤄𐤉 𐤍𐤂𐤅𐤏 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤇𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤌

וָאֱהִ֣י נָ֭גוּעַ כָּל־ הַיּ֑וֹם וְ֝תוֹכַחְתִּ֗י לַבְּקָרִֽים׃ wā·’ĕ·hî nā·ḡū·a‘ kāl- hay·yō·wm wə·ṯō·w·ḵaḥ·tî lab·bə·qā·rîmWLC · 14

15

If I had said, “I will speak this way,” then I would have betrayed vvv Your children.

𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤎𐤐𐤓𐤄 𐤊𐤌𐤅 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤂𐤃𐤕𐤉 𐤃𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤊

אִם־ אָ֭מַרְתִּי אֲסַפְּרָ֥ה כְמ֑וֹ הִנֵּ֤ה בָגָֽדְתִּי׃ ד֭וֹר בָּנֶ֣יךָ ’im- ’ā·mar·tî ’ă·sap·pə·rāh ḵə·mōw hin·nêh ḇā·ḡā·ḏə·tî ḏō·wr bā·ne·ḵāWLC · 15

When I tried to understand all this, it was troublesome in my sight

𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤔𐤁𐤄 𐤋𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤏𐤌𐤋 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉

וָֽ֭אֲחַשְּׁבָה לָדַ֣עַת זֹ֑את הִיא עָמָ֖ל בְעֵינָֽי׃ wā·’ă·ḥaš·šə·ḇāh lā·ḏa·‘aṯ zōṯ hī ‘ā·māl ḇə·‘ê·nāyWLC · 16

17

until I entered… God’s sanctuary; then I discerned their end.

𐤏𐤃 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤕𐤌

עַד־ אָ֭בוֹא אֶל־ אֵ֑ל מִקְדְּשֵׁי־ אָ֝בִ֗ינָה לְאַחֲרִיתָֽם׃ ‘aḏ- ’ā·ḇō·w ’el- ’êl miq·də·šê- ’ā·ḇî·nāh lə·’a·ḥă·rî·ṯāmWLC · 17

18

Surely You set them on slick ground; You cast them down into ruin.

𐤀𐤊 𐤕𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤌𐤅 𐤁𐤇𐤋𐤒𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤐𐤋𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤌𐤔𐤅𐤀𐤅𐤕

אַ֣ךְ תָּשִׁ֣ית לָ֑מוֹ בַּ֭חֲלָקוֹת הִ֝פַּלְתָּ֗ם לְמַשּׁוּאֽוֹת׃ ’aḵ tā·šîṯ lā·mōw ba·ḥă·lā·qō·wṯ hip·pal·tām lə·maš·šū·’ō·wṯWLC · 18

19

How suddenly they are laid waste, completely swept away by terrors!

𐤀𐤉𐤊 𐤊𐤓𐤂𐤏 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤄 𐤕𐤌𐤅 𐤎𐤐𐤅 𐤌𐤍 𐤁𐤋𐤄𐤅𐤕

אֵ֤יךְ כְרָ֑גַע הָי֣וּ לְשַׁמָּ֣ה תַ֝֗מּוּ סָ֥פוּ מִן־ בַּלָּהֽוֹת׃ ’êḵ ḵə·rā·ḡa‘ hā·yū lə·šam·māh ṯam·mū sā·p̄ū min- bal·lā·hō·wṯWLC · 19

20

Like [one] waking from a dream, so You, O Lord, awaken [and] despise their form.

𐤌𐤄𐤒𐤉𐤑 𐤊𐤇𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤕𐤁𐤆𐤄 𐤑𐤋𐤌𐤌

מֵהָקִ֑יץ כַּחֲל֥וֹם אֲ֝דֹנָי בָּעִ֤יר׀ תִּבְזֶֽה׃ צַלְמָ֬ם mê·hā·qîṣ ka·ḥă·lō·wm ’ă·ḏō·nāy bā·‘îr tiḇ·zeh ṣal·māmWLC · 20

21

When my heart was grieved and I was pierced within,

𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤁𐤁𐤉 𐤉𐤕𐤇𐤌𐤑 𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅𐤍𐤍 𐤅𐤊𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤕𐤉

כִּ֭י לְבָבִ֑י יִתְחַמֵּ֣ץ אֶשְׁתּוֹנָֽן׃ וְ֝כִלְיוֹתַ֗י kî lə·ḇā·ḇî yiṯ·ḥam·mêṣ ’eš·tō·w·nān wə·ḵil·yō·w·ṯayWLC · 21

22

I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before You.

𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤏𐤓 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤃𐤏 𐤄𐤉𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤄𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤌𐤊

וַאֲנִי־ בַ֭עַר וְלֹ֣א אֵדָ֑ע הָיִ֥יתִי בְּ֝הֵמ֗וֹת עִמָּֽךְ׃ wa·’ă·nî- ḇa·‘ar wə·lō ’ê·ḏā‘ hā·yî·ṯî bə·hê·mō·wṯ ‘im·māḵWLC · 22

23

Yet I am always with You; You hold my right hand.

𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤏𐤌𐤊 𐤀𐤇𐤆𐤕 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤃

וַאֲנִ֣י תָמִ֣יד עִמָּ֑ךְ אָ֝חַ֗זְתָּ יְמִינִֽי׃ בְּיַד־ wa·’ă·nî ṯā·mîḏ ‘im·māḵ ’ā·ḥaz·tā yə·mî·nî bə·yaḏ-WLC · 23

24

You guide me with Your counsel, and later receive me in glory.

𐤕𐤍𐤇𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤏𐤑𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤓 𐤕𐤒𐤇𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤃

תַנְחֵ֑נִי בַּעֲצָתְךָ֥ וְ֝אַחַ֗ר תִּקָּחֵֽנִי׃ כָּב֥וֹד ṯan·ḥê·nî ba·‘ă·ṣā·ṯə·ḵā wə·’a·ḥar tiq·qā·ḥê·nî kā·ḇō·wḏWLC · 24

25

Whom have I in heaven but You? And on earth I desire no one besides You.

𐤌𐤉 𐤋𐤉 𐤁𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤇𐤐𐤑𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤊

מִי־ לִ֥י בַשָּׁמָ֑יִם בָאָֽרֶץ׃ חָפַ֥צְתִּי לֹא־ וְ֝עִמְּךָ֗ mî- lî ḇaš·šā·mā·yim ḇā·’ā·reṣ ḥā·p̄aṣ·tî lō- wə·‘im·mə·ḵāWLC · 25

26

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

𐤔𐤀𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤁𐤁𐤉 𐤊𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤑𐤅𐤓 𐤋𐤁𐤁𐤉 𐤅𐤇𐤋𐤒𐤉 𐤋𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌

שְׁאֵרִ֗י וּלְבָ֫בִ֥י כָּלָ֥ה אֱלֹהִ֥ים צוּר־ לְבָבִ֥י וְחֶלְקִ֗י לְעוֹלָֽם׃ šə·’ê·rî ū·lə·ḇā·ḇî kā·lāh ’ĕ·lō·hîm ṣūr- lə·ḇā·ḇî wə·ḥel·qî lə·‘ō·w·lāmWLC · 26

27

Those far from You will surely perish; You destroy all who are unfaithful to You.

𐤓𐤇𐤒𐤉𐤊 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤀𐤁𐤃𐤅 𐤄𐤑𐤌𐤕𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤆𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤌𐤊

רְחֵקֶ֣יךָ כִּֽי־ הִנֵּ֣ה יֹאבֵ֑דוּ הִ֝צְמַ֗תָּה כָּל־ זוֹנֶ֥ה מִמֶּֽךָּ׃ rə·ḥê·qe·ḵā kî- hin·nêh yō·ḇê·ḏū hiṣ·mat·tāh kāl- zō·w·neh mim·me·kāWLC · 27

28

But as for me, [it is] good to draw near to God. I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may proclaim all Your works.

𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤋𐤉 𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤇𐤎𐤉 𐤋𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊

וַאֲנִ֤י׀ לִ֫י־ ט֥וֹב קִֽרֲבַ֥ת אֱלֹהִ֗ים שַׁתִּ֤י׀ בַּאדֹנָ֣י יְהֹוִ֣ה מַחְסִ֑י לְ֝סַפֵּ֗ר כָּל־ מַלְאֲכוֹתֶֽיךָ׃ wa·’ă·nî lî- ṭō·wḇ qi·ră·ḇaṯ ’ĕ·lō·hîm šat·tî ba·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh maḥ·sî lə·sap·pêr kāl- mal·’ă·ḵō·w·ṯe·ḵāWLC · 28
