The Hurtful Tongue

For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. 1Hear, O God, my voice of complaint; preserve my life from dread of the enemy.

לַמְנַצֵּ֗חַ מִזְמ֥וֹר לְדָוִֽד׃ שְׁמַע־ אֱלֹהִ֣ים קוֹלִ֣י בְשִׂיחִ֑י תִּצֹּ֥ר חַיָּֽי׃ מִפַּ֥חַד א֝וֹיֵ֗ב lam·naṣ·ṣê·aḥ miz·mō·wr lə·ḏā·wiḏ šə·ma‘- ’ĕ·lō·hîm qō·w·lî ḇə·śî·ḥî tiṣ·ṣōr ḥay·yāy mip·pa·ḥaḏ ’ō·w·yêḇ — WLC · 1

Hide me from the scheming of the wicked, from the mob of workers of iniquity,

תַּ֭סְתִּירֵנִי מִסּ֣וֹד מְרֵעִ֑ים מֵ֝רִגְשַׁ֗ת פֹּ֣עֲלֵי אָֽוֶן׃ tas·tî·rê·nî mis·sō·wḏ mə·rê·‘îm mê·riḡ·šaṯ pō·‘ă·lê ’ā·wen — WLC · 2

who sharpen their tongues like swords and aim their bitter words like arrows,
𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤍𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤍𐤌 𐤊𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤅 𐤌𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤇𐤑𐤌
אֲשֶׁ֤ר שָׁנְנ֣וּ לְשׁוֹנָ֑ם כַחֶ֣רֶב דָּרְכ֥וּ מָֽר׃ דָּבָ֥ר חִ֝צָּ֗ם ’ă·šer šā·nə·nū lə·šō·w·nām ḵa·ḥe·reḇ dā·rə·ḵū mār dā·ḇār ḥiṣ·ṣām — WLC · 3

ambushing the innocent in seclusion, shooting suddenly, without fear.

לִיר֣וֹת תָּ֑ם בַּמִּסְתָּרִ֣ים יֹ֝רֻ֗הוּ פִּתְאֹ֥ם וְלֹ֣א יִירָֽאוּ׃ lî·rō·wṯ tām bam·mis·tā·rîm yō·ru·hū piṯ·’ōm wə·lō yî·rā·’ū — WLC · 4

They hold fast to their evil purpose; they speak of hiding their snares. “Who will see them?” they say.

יְחַזְּקוּ־ לָ֨מוֹ׀ רָ֗ע דָּ֘בָ֤ר יְֽ֭סַפְּרוּ לִטְמ֣וֹן מוֹקְשִׁ֑ים מִ֣י יִרְאֶה־ לָּֽמוֹ׃ אָ֝מְר֗וּ yə·ḥaz·zə·qū- lā·mōw rā‘ dā·ḇār yə·sap·pə·rū liṭ·mō·wn mō·wq·šîm mî yir·’eh- lā·mōw ’ā·mə·rū — WLC · 5

They devise injustice [and say], “We have perfected a secret plan.” For the inner man and the heart are mysterious.

יַֽחְפְּֽשׂוּ־ עוֹלֹ֗ת תַּ֭מְנוּ חֵ֣פֶשׂ מְחֻפָּ֑שׂ וְקֶ֥רֶב אִ֝֗ישׁ וְלֵ֣ב עָמֹֽק׃ yaḥ·pə·śū- ‘ō·w·lōṯ tam·nū ḥê·p̄eś mə·ḥup·pāś wə·qe·reḇ ’îš wə·lêḇ ‘ā·mōq — WLC · 6

But God will shoot them with arrows; suddenly they will be wounded.
𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤌 𐤇𐤑 𐤐𐤕𐤀𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤊𐤅𐤕𐤌
אֱלֹ֫הִ֥ים וַיֹּרֵ֗ם חֵ֥ץ פִּתְא֑וֹם הָ֝י֗וּ מַכּוֹתָֽם׃ ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yō·rêm ḥêṣ piṯ·’ō·wm hā·yū mak·kō·w·ṯām — WLC · 7

They will be made to stumble, their own tongues turned against them. All who see will shake their heads.
𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤔𐤉𐤋𐤅𐤄𐤅 𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤍𐤌 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤌𐤅 𐤊𐤋 𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤁𐤌 𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤃𐤃𐤅
וַיַּכְשִׁיל֣וּהוּ לְשׁוֹנָ֑ם עָלֵ֣ימוֹ כָּל־ רֹ֥אֵה בָֽם׃ יִ֝תְנֹדֲד֗וּ way·yaḵ·šî·lū·hū lə·šō·w·nām ‘ā·lê·mōw kāl- rō·’êh ḇām yiṯ·nō·ḏă·ḏū — WLC · 8

Then all mankind will fear and proclaim the work of God; so they will ponder what He has done.

כָּל־ אָ֫דָ֥ם וַיִּֽירְא֗וּ וַ֭יַּגִּידוּ פֹּ֥עַל אֱלֹהִ֗ים הִשְׂכִּֽילוּ׃ וּֽמַעֲשֵׂ֥הוּ kāl- ’ā·ḏām way·yî·rə·’ū way·yag·gî·ḏū pō·‘al ’ĕ·lō·hîm hiś·kî·lū ū·ma·‘ă·śê·hū — WLC · 9

Let the righteous rejoice in the LORD and take refuge in Him; let all the upright in heart exult.

צַדִּ֣יק יִשְׂמַ֬ח בַּ֭יהוָה וְחָ֣סָה ב֑וֹ כָּל־ יִשְׁרֵי־ לֵֽב׃ וְ֝יִתְהַֽלְל֗וּ ṣad·dîq yiś·maḥ Yah·weh wə·ḥā·sāh ḇōw kāl- yiš·rê- lêḇ wə·yiṯ·hal·lū — WLC · 10
