Chapter 55

Cast Your Burden upon the LORD

For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments. A Maskil of David. 1Listen to my prayer, O God, and do not ignore my plea.

𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤑𐤇 𐤁𐤍𐤂𐤉𐤍𐤕 𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤉𐤋 𐤋𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤄𐤀𐤆𐤉𐤍𐤄 𐤕𐤐𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤕𐤏𐤋𐤌 𐤌𐤕𐤇𐤍𐤕𐤉

לַמְנַצֵּ֥חַ בִּנְגִינֹ֗ת מַשְׂכִּ֥יל לְדָוִֽד׃ הַאֲזִ֣ינָה תְּפִלָּתִ֑י אֱ֭לֹהִים וְאַל־ תִּ֝תְעַלַּ֗ם מִתְּחִנָּתִֽי׃ lam·naṣ·ṣê·aḥ bin·ḡî·nōṯ maś·kîl lə·ḏā·wiḏ ha·’ă·zî·nāh tə·p̄il·lā·ṯî ’ĕ·lō·hîm wə·’al- tiṯ·‘al·lam mit·tə·ḥin·nā·ṯîWLC · 1

Attend to me and answer me. I am restless in my complaint, and distraught

𐤄𐤒𐤔𐤉𐤁𐤄 𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤏𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤃 𐤁𐤔𐤉𐤇𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤄𐤉𐤌𐤄

הַקְשִׁ֣יבָה לִּ֣י וַעֲנֵ֑נִי אָרִ֖יד בְּשִׂיחִ֣י וְאָהִֽימָה׃ haq·šî·ḇāh lî wa·‘ă·nê·nî ’ā·rîḏ bə·śî·ḥî wə·’ā·hî·māhWLC · 2

at the voice of the enemy, at the pressure of the wicked. For they bring down disaster upon me and resent me in their anger.

𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤀𐤅𐤉𐤁 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤒𐤕 𐤓𐤔𐤏 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤈𐤅 𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤈𐤌𐤅𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤐

מִקּ֤וֹל אוֹיֵ֗ב מִפְּנֵ֣י עָקַ֣ת רָשָׁ֑ע כִּי־ יָמִ֥יטוּ אָ֝֗וֶן עָלַ֥י יִשְׂטְמֽוּנִי׃ וּבְאַ֥ף miq·qō·wl ’ō·w·yêḇ mip·pə·nê ‘ā·qaṯ rā·šā‘ kî- yā·mî·ṭū ’ā·wen ‘ā·lay yiś·ṭə·mū·nî ū·ḇə·’ap̄WLC · 3

My heart pounds within me, and the terrors of death assail me.

𐤋𐤁𐤉 𐤉𐤇𐤉𐤋 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤍𐤐𐤋𐤅 𐤏𐤋𐤉

לִ֭בִּי יָחִ֣יל בְּקִרְבִּ֑י וְאֵימ֥וֹת מָ֝֗וֶת נָפְל֥וּ עָלָֽי׃ lib·bî yā·ḥîl bə·qir·bî wə·’ê·mō·wṯ mā·weṯ nā·p̄ə·lū ‘ā·lāyWLC · 4

Fear and trembling grip me, and horror has overwhelmed me.

𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤓𐤏𐤃 𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤁𐤉 𐤐𐤋𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤕𐤊𐤎𐤍𐤉

יִרְאָ֣ה וָ֭רַעַד יָ֣בֹא בִ֑י פַּלָּצֽוּת׃ וַ֝תְּכַסֵּ֗נִי yir·’āh wā·ra·‘aḏ yā·ḇō ḇî pal·lā·ṣūṯ wat·tə·ḵas·sê·nîWLC · 5

I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and find rest.

𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤓 𐤊𐤉𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤏𐤅𐤐𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤊𐤍𐤄

וָאֹמַ֗ר מִֽי־ יִתֶּן־ לִּ֣י אֵ֭בֶר כַּיּוֹנָ֗ה אָע֥וּפָה וְאֶשְׁכֹּֽנָה׃ wā·’ō·mar mî- yit·ten- lî ’ê·ḇer kay·yō·w·nāh ’ā·‘ū·p̄āh wə·’eš·kō·nāhWLC · 6

How far away I would flee! In the wilderness I would remain. Selah

𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤓𐤇𐤉𐤒 𐤍𐤃𐤃 𐤁𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤍 𐤎𐤋𐤄

הִ֭נֵּה אַרְחִ֣יק נְדֹ֑ד בַּמִּדְבָּ֣ר אָלִ֖ין סֶֽלָה׃ hin·nêh ’ar·ḥîq nə·ḏōḏ bam·miḏ·bār ’ā·lîn se·lāhWLC · 7

I would hurry to my shelter, far from this raging… tempest.”

𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤔𐤄 𐤌𐤐𐤋𐤈 𐤋𐤉 𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤎𐤏𐤄 𐤌𐤎𐤏𐤓

אָחִ֣ישָׁה מִפְלָ֣ט לִ֑י מֵר֖וּחַ סֹעָ֣ה מִסָּֽעַר׃ ’ā·ḥî·šāh mip̄·lāṭ lî mê·rū·aḥ sō·‘āh mis·sā·‘arWLC · 8

O Lord, confuse and confound their speech, for I see violence and strife in the city.

𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤋𐤏 𐤐𐤋𐤂 𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤍𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤇𐤌𐤎 𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤁 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤓

אֲ֭דֹנָי בַּלַּ֣ע פַּלַּ֣ג לְשׁוֹנָ֑ם כִּֽי־ רָאִ֨יתִי חָמָ֖ס וְרִ֣יב בָּעִֽיר׃ ’ă·ḏō·nāy bal·la‘ pal·laḡ lə·šō·w·nām kî- rā·’î·ṯî ḥā·mās wə·rîḇ bā·‘îrWLC · 9

Day and night they encircle… the walls, while malice and trouble [lie] within.

𐤉𐤅𐤌𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄 𐤉𐤎𐤅𐤁𐤁𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤇𐤅𐤌𐤕𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤋 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤄

יוֹמָ֤ם וָלַ֗יְלָה יְסוֹבְבֻ֥הָ עַל־ חוֹמֹתֶ֑יהָ וְאָ֖וֶן וְעָמָ֣ל בְּקִרְבָּֽהּ׃ yō·w·mām wā·lay·lāh yə·sō·wḇ·ḇu·hā ‘al- ḥō·w·mō·ṯe·hā wə·’ā·wen wə·‘ā·māl bə·qir·bāhWLC · 10

Destruction [is] within; oppression and deceit never leave the streets.

𐤄𐤅𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤌𐤓𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤓𐤇𐤁𐤄

הַוּ֥וֹת בְּקִרְבָּ֑הּ תֹּ֣ךְ וּמִרְמָֽה׃ וְֽלֹא־ יָמִ֥ישׁ מֵ֝רְחֹבָ֗הּ haw·wō·wṯ bə·qir·bāh tōḵ ū·mir·māh wə·lō- yā·mîš mê·rə·ḥō·ḇāhWLC · 11

12

For it is not an enemy who insults me; that I could endure. It is not a foe who rises against me; from him I could hide.

𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤅𐤉𐤁 𐤉𐤇𐤓𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤀 𐤋𐤀 𐤌𐤔𐤍𐤀𐤉 𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤉𐤋 𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤎𐤕𐤓

כִּ֤י לֹֽא־ אוֹיֵ֥ב יְחָֽרְפֵ֗נִי וְאֶ֫שָּׂ֥א לֹֽא־ מְ֭שַׂנְאִי הִגְדִּ֑יל עָלַ֣י מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ וְאֶסָּתֵ֥ר kî lō- ’ō·w·yêḇ yə·ḥā·rə·p̄ê·nî wə·’eś·śā lō- mə·śan·’î hiḡ·dîl ‘ā·lay mim·men·nū wə·’es·sā·ṯêrWLC · 12

But it is you, a man like myself, my companion and close friend.

𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤍𐤅𐤔 𐤊𐤏𐤓𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤅𐤐𐤉 𐤅𐤌𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤉

וְאַתָּ֣ה אֱנ֣וֹשׁ כְּעֶרְכִּ֑י אַ֝לּוּפִ֗י וּמְיֻדָּֽעִי׃ wə·’at·tāh ’ĕ·nō·wōš kə·‘er·kî ’al·lū·p̄î ū·mə·yud·dā·‘îWLC · 13

14

We shared sweet fellowship together; we walked with the crowd into the house of God.

𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤌𐤕𐤉𐤒 𐤎𐤅𐤃 𐤉𐤇𐤃𐤅 𐤍𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤓𐤂𐤔 𐤁𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌

אֲשֶׁ֣ר נַמְתִּ֣יק ס֑וֹד יַ֭חְדָּו נְהַלֵּ֥ךְ בְּרָֽגֶשׁ׃ בְּבֵ֥ית אֱ֝לֹהִ֗ים ’ă·šer nam·tîq sō·wḏ yaḥ·dāw nə·hal·lêḵ bə·rā·ḡeš bə·ḇêṯ ’ĕ·lō·hîmWLC · 14

15

Let death seize them by surprise…; let them go down to Sheol alive, for evil is with them in their homes.

𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤌𐤅 𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤅 𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤓𐤏𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤂𐤅𐤓𐤌

יַשִּׁימָוֶת עָלֵ֗ימוֹ יֵרְד֣וּ שְׁא֣וֹל חַיִּ֑ים כִּֽי־ רָע֖וֹת בְּקִרְבָּֽם׃ בִּמְגוּרָ֣ם yaš·šī·må̄·wɛṯ ʿå̄·lē·mō yê·rə·ḏū šə·’ō·wl ḥay·yîm kî- rā·‘ō·wṯ bə·qir·bām bim·ḡū·rāmWLC · 15

But I call to God, and the LORD saves me.

𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤏𐤍𐤉

אֲ֭נִי אֶקְרָ֑א אֶל־ אֱלֹהִ֣ים וַ֝יהוָ֗ה יוֹשִׁיעֵֽנִי׃ ’ă·nî ’eq·rā ’el- ’ĕ·lō·hîm Yah·weh yō·wō·šî·‘ê·nîWLC · 16

17

Morning, noon, and night, I cry out in distress, and He hears my voice.

𐤅𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤅𐤑𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤓𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤇𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤒𐤅𐤋𐤉

וָבֹ֣קֶר וְ֭צָהֳרַיִם עֶ֤רֶב וְאֶהֱמֶ֑ה אָשִׂ֣יחָה וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע קוֹלִֽי׃ wā·ḇō·qer wə·ṣā·ho·ra·yim ‘e·reḇ wə·’e·hĕ·meh ’ā·śî·ḥāh way·yiš·ma‘ qō·w·lîWLC · 17

18

He redeems my soul in peace from the battle [waged] against me, even though many oppose me.

𐤐𐤃𐤄 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤉 𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤌𐤒𐤓𐤁 𐤋𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤉

פָּ֘דָ֤ה נַ֭פְשִׁי בְשָׁל֣וֹם מִקֲּרָב־ לִ֑י כִּֽי־ בְ֝רַבִּ֗ים הָי֥וּ עִמָּדִֽי׃ pā·ḏāh nap̄·šî ḇə·šā·lō·wm miq·qă·rāḇ- lî kî- ḇə·rab·bîm hā·yū ‘im·mā·ḏîWLC · 18

19

God will hear and humiliate them— the One enthroned for the ages— Selah because they do not change and they have no fear of God.

𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤒𐤃𐤌 𐤎𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤇𐤋𐤉𐤐𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤌𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌

אֵ֨ל׀ יִשְׁמַ֤ע׀ וְֽיַעֲנֵם֮ וְיֹ֤שֵׁ֥ב קֶ֗דֶם סֶ֥לָה אֲשֶׁ֤ר אֵ֣ין חֲלִיפ֣וֹת לָ֑מוֹ וְלֹ֖א יָרְא֣וּ אֱלֹהִֽים׃ ’êl yiš·ma‘ wə·ya·‘ă·nêm wə·yō·šêḇ qe·ḏem se·lāh ’ă·šer ’ên ḥă·lî·p̄ō·wṯ lā·mōw wə·lō yā·rə·’ū ’ĕ·lō·hîmWLC · 19

My companion attacks… his friends; he violates his covenant.

𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤉𐤅 𐤇𐤋𐤋 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕𐤅

שָׁלַ֣ח יָ֭דָיו בִּשְׁלֹמָ֗יו חִלֵּ֥ל בְּרִיתֽוֹ׃ šā·laḥ yā·ḏāw biš·lō·māw ḥil·lêl bə·rî·ṯōwWLC · 20

21

His speech is smooth as butter, but war is in his heart. His words are softer than oil, yet they are swords unsheathed.

𐤐𐤉𐤅 𐤇𐤋𐤒𐤅 𐤌𐤇𐤌𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤒𐤓𐤁 𐤋𐤁𐤅 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤓𐤊𐤅 𐤌𐤔𐤌𐤍 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤐𐤕𐤇𐤅𐤕

פִּיו֮ חָלְק֤וּ׀ מַחְמָאֹ֣ת וּֽקֲרָב־ לִ֫בּ֥וֹ דְבָרָ֥יו רַכּ֖וּ מִשֶּׁ֗מֶן וְהֵ֣מָּה פְתִחֽוֹת׃ pîw ḥā·lə·qū maḥ·mā·’ōṯ ū·qă·rāḇ- lib·bōw ḏə·ḇā·rāw rak·kū miš·še·men wə·hêm·māh p̄ə·ṯi·ḥō·wṯWLC · 21

Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never… let the righteous be shaken.

𐤄𐤔𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤁𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤉𐤊𐤋𐤊𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤀 𐤋𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤌𐤅𐤈

הַשְׁלֵ֤ךְ יְהָבְךָ֮ עַל־ יְהוָ֨ה׀ וְה֪וּא יְכַ֫לְכְּלֶ֥ךָ לֹא־ לְעוֹלָ֥ם יִתֵּ֖ן לַצַּדִּֽיק׃ מ֗וֹט haš·lêḵ yə·hā·ḇə·ḵā ‘al- Yah·weh wə·hū yə·ḵal·kə·le·ḵā lō- lə·‘ō·w·lām yit·tên laṣ·ṣad·dîq mō·wṭWLC · 22

23

But You, O God, will bring them down to the Pit of destruction; men of bloodshed and deceit will not live out half their days. But I will trust in You.

וְאַתָּ֤ה אֱלֹהִ֨ים׀ תּוֹרִדֵ֬ם׀ לִבְאֵ֬ר שַׁ֗חַת אַנְשֵׁ֤י דָמִ֣ים וּ֭מִרְמָה לֹא־ יֶחֱצ֣וּ יְמֵיהֶ֑ם וַ֝אֲנִ֗י אֶבְטַח־ בָּֽךְ׃ wə·’at·tāh ’ĕ·lō·hîm tō·w·ri·ḏêm liḇ·’êr ša·ḥaṯ ’an·šê ḏā·mîm ū·mir·māh lō- ye·ḥĕ·ṣū yə·mê·hem wa·’ă·nî ’eḇ·ṭaḥ- bāḵWLC · 23
